Guest Speaker: Dr. John C. Maxwell

[Applause] thank you may be seated good morning it's so good to be here with you great to be at celebration wasn't worship wonderful now do you get that kind of worship every weekend when you go to heaven you're going to want to come home on the weekends aren't you say wow I'll come back Sunday night but can I go back down the celebration so great to be with Joe and and Laurie and and then these oh these how these kids are great aren't a holiday you you do know this I and I have the opportunity to be in a lot of large churches I I know all the major leaders probably in the Christian world would be honest with you and you do know I think if you don't know you're going to know now that in in Joe and Laura you have two of the finest pastored leaders in America right here in your church you know that huh and that here and then we have a special surprise for you next week oh this is amazing new kids Mother's Day I was out to eat with him last night and and so we're talking about who's going to be the speaker next week and and Jos said Sean I want you to tell him who's gonna speak next week and I agreed but Lori didn't agree she's now I don't think you should tell them and and but you know she got outvoted two to one and besides when you're 72 you really don't care what other people say anyway I tell if they don't like it's okay I'm gonna die so relax they could bill but but with this thing could be so much for next week Lori is going to be the speaker here at celebrate I mean this is gonna be so good first of all she's a terrific leader you know that G she has she has one of the top women's ministry in America 5,000 women come to that and so she knows how to lead but she's a terrific communicator she has a great heart for people and for God and and when you hear her speak next week you're going to understand where Jo gets all his material and so you know the secret is gonna be out they're gonna say oh that's why Jo is so good Lori is feeding him all that stuff and so won't that that'll be just that'll be wonderful Mother's Day that they have such a terrific lady kind of speak and into your life it'll be it'll be really great so thanks for letting me be here I'm excited I have a lesson that's going to just apply to your life in fact as I get ready to teach this lesson look at your neighbor and and and and tell them safe to say take good notes you're going to need this okay you just help take good notes all right in fact look at them and say you're gonna learn something tell me you're gonna learn something you're gonna learn something that's me in fact look right back up say wait why do you think I brought you here today I brought you here to do something I'm going to take you into into the into the book of Ephesians chapter 3 and this is Paul's prayer for us it's an incredible prayer it's a beautiful prayer and and I want to share it with you and I'm gonna but instead of calling it Paul's prayer for you I'm gonna call it my prayer for you because I've read it so many times I it's mine now okay I mean I tell people when I'm in leadership conferences all the time and I say well you know when you go out you take these principles I teach if you really you know if you think you've got to give somebody credit the first time you can say John said and the next time you get up you say it's been said and the third time just gonna say you know what I've been thinking and so this is a I've been thinking teaching okay I mean I I look at this this is so good and I prayed this so many times for people like you that that it's my prayer now and so let's get going let's dive into because it's just it's just some good stuff here okay and and there are three things that I pray for you and I pray this prayer every day I pray this for myself I pray this for you and the first thing that I pray is that that you will know God and that is only first in this teaching but it's first in my life for just the most important thing that you or I can can know in life is to know God in fact let's look at the the verses in verses 14 through 17 here's what Paul says he sits my responses to get down on my knees before the Father this magnificent father who parcels out all heaven and earth and I ask him to strengthen you by his spirit not a brute strength but a glorious inner strength and here it is right here that Christ will live in you as you open the door and invite him in in other words Paul said the thing that I pray for more than open your heart store and you'll invite Christ in twenty-five years ago my life was incredibly changed I had been writing some books but I had been a pastor for 25 years in the church and I was sitting down with my publishers and the books were starting to sell quite well and the publishers had done some research and they said John this may surprise you but two-thirds of your books are being bought not by the Christian audience but by the business audience and it surprised me I had no idea but it was literally at that moment when they told me that my audience had had gone to the secular business sector that I felt called to spend the rest of my life over on that side and so I resigned my church and and and I began to prepare to go in to help you know education government business and I began to give my life to help them and my hope priority was was to add value to them to come in and speak for them and and and do something say something that would add value to them because I realized that if I ever had an opportunity to share my faith with them it would be because they respected me and I helped them first and so though the way that you let your light shine as a Christian is you don't go and witness immediately you go and and get respect from people first are you with me treat them well value them add value to them and all of a sudden as you begin to do this for them do you get that respect and what I learned is you get the respect then then you get the relationship but my whole life now is helping people in that world to a time and a place where I get to where I get to just share my faith and it's the most wonderful life I I love this and and it's just so it's so great when I get that opportunity there was a lady a very successful executive who who I had been adding value to her organization for some time and so we got you know one night she started talking to me about her life and and and she was searching for God like all people are and so I had an opportunity to introduce her to God and so the next day I I called her and I asked her I said well how's it going and she said oh she said and I gave her a couple things you wanted to do is it to build her faith up and and she said well and I loved her she said well she said you know okay I've already known Jesus for about 24 hours and she said it's kind of like a first date it's a little awkward but she said I think I'm going to enjoy getting to know him better and I said oh I love this I love this world and and my first prayer for you is that you really that you know God that you just know him and I have the opportunity every year to present faith God to tens of thousands of people in my organized five companies but in my in my company's last year over a hundred and forty eight thousand people came to Christ and and by the way thank you because you helped us you helped us financially with my nonprofit organization equip you invest in that and and and so thank you thank you for that very much I'm very appreciative and I thought this morning in this session I didn't even do this in the other two but but you know that as joe said save the best to last and i can't help them if they don't know which service to attend I mean is that my fault what am I supposed to do wait for them to catch on I don't know but but I thought of I I think I'd like to take out five minutes and I would like to share you very simply how you can know God okay because what I do in a lot of situations is we're in places where I've been many times I'll teach the leadership stuff that they want do my best to serve them and then I'll let them go and I'll just say look you know if you want to come back in 15 minutes I'll be here and I'll take ten minutes and I'll share with you how you can know God in a personal way and we find that about 90% of the people come back and if the 90% of people that come back after I finished sharing about 50 percent of them receive Christ and so I'm just gonna I thought I'd just do this I again I did do it the other other services but I would just like to I would like to share with you what is a true picture of who God is and and here's the issue here's the issue people do not have a relationship with God because they have a wrong picture of who he is and if your picture is wrong the relationship will never get right when people ask me about how to develop leaders the first thing they do is not develop leaders the first thing they have to do is they have to have a picture what a leader looks like they got it they've got to recruit somebody that can lead so they can develop them are you with me and so I tell them they have to have a picture they have to they have to know what they're looking for if you know what you're looking for you couldn't find it it's kind of when people pick me up at the airport and they don't know who I am they've never seen me and and so the people they pick me up at the airport you know that they said some driver to pick me up and so he's down there by the baggage claim you've seen he's got his hand up in here and he's got my name he's got my name on the end of it so I get off the plane come through security go to baggage look at the guys got his arm in the air follow us her arm corrupt to his hand I see my name and I go up and say hey I'm John Maxwell and every time they tell me the same thing oh I found you they didn't find me I found them in fact because I'm wandering sometimes I've just for fun I just walked right by them I mean I just write this I was as close as this water they didn't even have a clue it was me because you see they didn't know what I look like and if you don't know what God looks like you'll never find and what happens is we have false pictures of God we have pictures that aren't who God is and it's those pictures and by the way because I live in the secular world all the time as I as I would talk with people get into great discussions I would ask him all the time and you know I'd say well what do you think about God and so you know I don't believe in God or and they would give me all these things that they thought about God I started filing it and and pretty soon basically the wrong pictures of God were given me to me by people who gave me what they thought God looked like it so I want to give you three they'll give you three wrong pictures of God and then I'll give you a fourth one that is the right one okay the first wrong picture of God is in your mind picture in your mind picture a huge wall okay a big fence huge wall okay it's tall it's long it's it's wide it's it's foreboding I mean let's put it this way if you're on the outside of this wall you basically know you're never going to get on the inside and when people see God a lot of times they see a wall and they believe there's a god but they believe that he is distant and they'll never be able to see him or know him that they're they're never going to quite get in so they're kind of on the outside he's kind of on the inside and they just say well you know it was sure be nice to know him but I just don't I've got a wall here that it's just not gonna be possible for me to get to him now if that's if that's is your picture of God it's it's a wrong picture of God because the God that I'm talking about my father is incredibly accessible to you oh my gosh I mean off-the-charts accessable now that wall is sin and that keeps us at distance from God but when he sent his son Christ into this world he closed the gap he let me explain it this way Jesus jumped the wall he jumped the wall to get to you to get to me because more than anything else more than thing else he wants to be accessible within the beginning Anatomy when they sin against God they were the ones that ran and hid from God God didn't write that God came and looked for them gut said where are you so if you have a picture that God is distant and there's a wall and there's a barrier and you're never gonna get to him he's not accessible it's it's just not the right picture of God I would know God either if I thought that was the way God was the second picture picture in your mind okay a staircase that goes all the way up to heaven this is a huge staircase this I mean you start climbing this staircase and you spend your whole life climbing it and it's the it's the staircase of good works and you just you just do good things and you're a good neighbor and you're a good person and you and you just everyday you're you're saying I think I did something today I think I got a step closer I got a step closer and there are people who think that they can earn their way or walk their way or prove their way into a relationship with God and so that's what they tried and it never works and it never works it never works because it can't work you see even Jesus when he came to earth right before he went and through the trial under the cross he had one last conversation with the father in the garden he said let me talk to your father is there another way that people can receive is there another way that this relationship can be reconciled between you and mankind without me going to the cross and basically the father said son you have to die you have to die you have to resurrect the only way that this reconciliation could ever happen is you have to do it for them and so you see my relationship with God nothing to wat do with what has nothing to do with what I do that's nothing you may look at me they said well you must you must really God must really love you Maxwell look at you up here teaching the world today and and us just you're just no no I can do this every day mine has nothing to do with all my relationship with God I can't work my way into the kingdom you see it's not what I do it's what he's done and when he did it I don't have to do anything it's it's now a gift it's it's now grace it's it's now something that I receive that it's something that I can take credit for by the way if this stairway to heaven thing really worked would wouldn't we we would be miserable we'd we'd be all the time trying to outwork each other wouldn't we hi and I would say today I'd say God I got a lot closer to you than the rest of those people I talked to because I was doing all the work they just sitting out there taking notes I'm just getting closer and then the next thing I'd be do does I'd be looking where you are and I'd say I'm ahead of you I'm gonna go higher than you you could never do this work stuff because it doesn't work so if you somehow think that your relationship with God depends on how wonderful you are your computer on picture of God picture number three though this is a little gross but it works just picture your mind a big garbage dump just a copy of stuff okay now there's nothing attractive about a garbage dump nobody ever says you know what let's take a walk by the garbage dump today oh my gosh and when you hit by the garbage W so let's get some pictures here come on come on nobody takes pictures make garbage dumps because they don't want to be associated the garbage dump nobody walks my garbage company cuz nobody wants to be around the garbage dump garbage dumps nobody likes garbage dump and and when people see God sometimes they look at the garbage in their life the junk and they say I don't think God would like to have a relationship with me I've just screwed my life up so bad and if that's your picture of God it couldn't be further from the truth in fact let me just say something if you've got a bunch of junk in your life this is amazing God is attracted to you oh yeah in fact he's looking for you and when you got out ruin your life was a mess it's kinda like Oh God says you made my day because when Jesus was on earth he was continually hanging around with sinners and the only people that didn't like him hanging around with sinners were religious people religious people said well why don't you spend more time with us they said what you don't understand you see I'm a doctor and I came for sick people I didn't come for well people I came for people who have garbage in their life or you have to get understand I'm a shepherd and and I know that I've got 99 people it might even my fault but there's one that's not in there and I I'm so passionate about that one I'll leave those nine nights and I'll go out and I'll look and I'll seek and I'll find it now this is incredible this is amazing I want you to get the picture there the right picture of God and and so if you if you say there's a wall there and God's not accessible oh my gosh or there's a stairway to heaven and I can get you know in it funny when you have the wall picture you say it can't get to God when you got the stairwell you say I can get to God both of my wrong pictures and then you got the garbage thing well God wouldn't be interested in me let me taste that about God's unconditional love he loves you you say I don't know I don't believe in God I don't have a relationship I don't want relation I kind of tear something you can go out in the parking lot and raise your fist toward heaven and cuss it God kind of tell you something God will love you as much while you're doing that as he loves me right now while I'm teaching this P G God God God has no limits God Hey don't dump God down to your level of love well there is a right picture it's the door it's your door it's my door it's our hearts door and Jesus said I stand at your heart's door and I knock and if any person hears my voice and opens the door I will come in not maybe not probably not usually I will come in if you're a thousand steps from God he'll take 999 of those steps to your door and then he'll stand and he'll knock and he'll just basically say could I come in and the moment that you open your heart and ask him to come in that's when he comes in and that's when the relationship begins that's why Paul to top this prayer says that that you were to know God is that you would open your door open your heart and let him come in it's just that similar you say John it seems too simple it's that's what makes salvation beautiful it has to be simple folks if it costs you something only wealthy people could have it if it was difficult to understand only smart people could have that relationship if you if you could somehow earn it only healthy people could get there hello if it took a lot of time only people who lived awhile could get there none of that all wrong pictures of God he just basically says I'm just at your heart store and I want to come in and pulse it that's what I pray for I just pray I just pray for that you'll know God when I teach leadership networking I teach them to ask 7 questions and one of the questions I teach them to ask is who do you know that I should know oh it's a great question I've asked that hundreds of times and I've had people say well I'll tell you who you need to know and they've introduced and they said and it's opened up doors for me I could spend the next two hours just telling you all the people I know because I asked somebody who do you know that I should know and if you will ask me today John who do you know that I should know I'd say yeah God God this is huge I was at a speaking for the largest lumber broker company in the world and at the end of the day one of the executive VP's looked at me and said John got to ask you a question he said that your leadership stuff it's just it's so insightful but it's a little different he said wait where do you get your material and I smiled and I said you don't want to know they looked at me said what do you mean I don't want it I said you don't want to know where I get my material they looked at a couple of the other guys I could watch them look at each other another Gary said don't know he said we want to know where do you get and I said I know you want to know but you've got to trust me you don't want to know now there's nothing more beautiful than telling people they don't want to know drives them crazy well come on you got to tell us come on you have to tell us I said and if I told you it would disappoint you oh come on try it just try where do you get your leadership potential well I I get it all from the Bible anyway oh I said I told you you didn't want to know I said cocktails hours of 6:30 I'll be down there in the corner you have any question about God just come on down we'll have a private conversation I went down got the corner for the next hour the line never stopped see people they're so hungry to know God did you they they just haven't had anybody give them the right picture listen to me my friend everybody here's what I believe everybody would have a relationship with God if they had the right picture we have a picture problem if picture bro and sometimes in the church we send the wrong picture we've got to make it we got to make a determination we got to decide whether we're going to correct people or connect with people can't do both can't do both I'm a connector man I just sit down with him and we start right where they are we get on their ground nothing makes me nervous oh I'm say old John you don't want to know about my life hold my guys this'll be fun tell me now you can't make me nervous because God wants a relationship with you now the second thing I pray for you is that you will experience God's love and this is this is this is huge it's one thing to know him buts another thing to just absolutely be immersed in the love of God verses 18 and 19 and I ask him that with both feet planted firmly on love you'll be able to take in with all the followers of Jesus look at this the extravagant I love this extravagant dimensions of Christ's love his dimensions are extravagant reach out experience the breath test its length plumb the depths rise to its height live full lives full in the fullness of God there's a relationship between experiencing God's extravagant love and enjoying life to its fullest and basically Paul says that we can have as much of God's love as we want to that's why he tells us reach out to experience the breath test its length plumb the depths rise to the heights no she said take action on this this it's all out there this amazing extravagant love is for every one of you in this auditorium and here's the great news you can have as much of it as you want but your goal what a little bit of that love you have a little bit of that love a little bit more you have it this is incredible and so in this in this extravagant love of God there are four things that I pray for you number one is you'll experience the breath of God's love now what is the breath of God's loving well the breath of God's love means that God loves everyone it's so broad it's inclusive of every person for God so loved the what world that's pretty inclusive that's pretty broad here's a little exercise let's do together this morning look at your neighbor and say God loves you go ahead and tell them that God loves you that's good okay look at your neighbor and say God loves me now let me just say this you got a little happier when you said God loves me I just you just kind of lit up like a Christmas bulb I mean you know it's kind like God loves you yeah God loves you Carlos God loves me what color you got yeah Carlos we got loves me yeah and look look at the person beside and say God loves people I don't know go ahead and tell them that God loves people I don't know that's good because he he does he does it's broad it one more thing look at your neighborhood say God loves people I don't like mmm oh yeah that got exciting didn't it yeah godless people I don't like when people tell me they want to be Jesus like Christ's light I tell them I know exactly how to be Christ's light I know how to help you to be Jesus like if you mean if you really want to be like Jesus this is where you start this is where you end this is where you start when you look at the Gospels and you look at the life of Jesus the one thing that you'll come when you're done the one thing the one thing you can say for certain about Jesus is that he valued people everyone he valued everyone and what people say John I want to be like Jesus I say it's very simple start here value everyone and you're saying okay Oh John I love the value part that's good but the everyone it seems a little tight what do you mean by every one it's good question what I mean by everyone is every one what part of everyone don't you catch on but you say Jonah I know some people and they live some pretty awful lives yeah I know them too and I love them Jesus loves them and you'll never be like Jesus until you love them well John Peter understatement I know someone of course you do we all know someone how many of you know someone they just bug you come on let's just let's have some honest confession let's go get this ha come on that's good that's good yeah you know what you know what I'm talking about you know yeah [Music] honestly do you think they're gonna go to heaven you think we could be on the option [Music] how many have you ever been in a grocery store and you're pushing the cart and you look over a couple hours and you see someone you don't want to see that's the bad news the good news is they didn't see you come on how many of you ever done this number how many of every how many of you ever hid from somebody come on let's talk about it huh yeah how many of you are hiding from somebody right now yeah you see this this is incredible this this valuing people you see we we wait what I found about Christians is we value people who think like us hello that's a pretty narrow value you got on people if you want to be like Jesus you just value people that's the breadth of God's love it just reaches to everybody I would pray secondly that you would experience the length of God's love in fact Paul said test its length in other words God's love lasts forever the breadth of his glove is that it includes everyone the length of his love is it it lasts forever it never runs out it never gives up it never it never quits this is huge I mean we all every wants to all kind of lose patience don't we but but God's eye he just he just never loses patience that's he said it there's just a link to his love that no matter what you've done and no matter where you've gone it's you know he's just he's just ready to love you unconditionally unconditionally now the the problem is that when we test his love a lot of times in our life we go mess up it and we just we can't imagine God loving us after we mess up and what I want you to understand is God loved you before you messed up God loved you when you're messed up God loves you when you don't mess up and God loves you when you mess up again what part if God loves you don't you but the problem is we let our sin dumb God down until we see from our perspective how God looks at us instead of his perspective it's the prodigal son who would he messed up his life he said okay I'll go home back to Dad's house but I will no longer be called his son I'm no longer worried that I'll become a servant now what did the boy do the boy said I'll tell you what I've messed up so bad I know the father's gonna be so disappointed in me that when I come home I won't ask to be a son because I don't qualify for that anymore I'll ask to be a servant and have a bunk in the barn now who's saying that the boys saying that God's not saying that in fact when he comes to the Father he's shocked because he starts saying I'm not worthy to be your son he goes into his servant speech and his father shuts him right up said my boys it's a miracle my boys come home go kill the cow get the robe get the ring drive a party get the dance man hello we're gonna have a big time my boy has returned that you see it here's what I want you understand when you mess up your view of God messes up this is huge oh I wish I had 30 minutes right now on this subject right now I don't so I'm just gonna stir your mind I don't think that we can ever disappoint God we can disappoint ourselves we could be disappointed in others but I don't think we disappoint God who I wish I had time to work with this one on you because disappointment is the gap between expectation and reality that gap between what I expected and what was real that's where disappointment comes in and God knows everything he knows at all so his expectations of you are not based upon hope his expectations of you are based upon his sovereignty he already knows when you're not going to mess up he already knows that we're goofballs who really knows this and I love it when we kind of come to him and we say okay god I hate to break this to you it's like God's in heaven and said oh my gosh [Music] I had no idea I'm gonna have to pull away a little bit and think about by the way when the Sun came to the father the father never asked him where he spent his money they never asked him where I messed up his life he never I'm asked to ask him where he lost his health only legalistic Christians ask those questions the father just said welcome home I want you to experience the depth of God's love plumb its deaths now the depth of God's love is that God's love is forgiving when you think of depth do you ask well how low can you go well I don't know how low you have gone in your sin and in your mess-ups but God's capacity to forgive is greater than our capacity to sin now Kent don't miss this don't miss this cuz I review attention well John I won't tell you I just really messed my life up and you in fact John if you knew you'd be really disappointed in me that that's the the problem with sin is it becomes a self separator because all of a sudden again we get we mess up our perspective and put it on God as if it's his God's perspective and God's just he's just unconditionally wanting to love you back into the kingdom and and this is huge and I love the Renaissance if I said well I'm a big sinner well hope to do let me taste something God's a bigger Savior than you are a big sinner so I I don't know how low you've gone but let me tell you something when you go as low as you can go underneath your lowness is god's forgiveness you can't outrun god's love you can't go too low for god's love doesn't I mean God doesn't look and say man I that's a tough one there what do you think Jesus relax take a pill this is to me the length of God's love is farther than you can go the breadth of God's love includes everyone the depth of God's love reaches below your worst day and picks you up which brings me to the last thing I wish you could experience I wish that you could experience the height of God's love in fact Paul says rise to its heights Wow just just you see there's something about God's love that lifts people when I receive Christ at the age of 17 three days later I was riding I was reading in Paul's letter to the Church of Corinth and I read that passage said therefore if any person is in Christ that person becomes a new creation old things are passed away behold all things become new and I could remember it's a three day believer Christ follower all of us I realized I just got a clean sheet of paper all things have become you see when we engage in self talk and we look at our sin in humanity we get discouraging I'm telling you you need to get off of self talk and get on to God talk God talks talk is different than self talk in fact I don't want you to miss it so I put it on the screen I could read this to you but I'll read it to you why you visually look at it because you say I'm too tired and God says I will give you rest you say it's impossible God says all things are possible you say nobody really loves me and God says I love you you say I can't go on and God says my grace is sufficient you say I'm not able and God says I am able you say I can't forgive myself gods as I forgive you when you say I can't manage God said I'll supply all your needs you say I'm afraid God say well I've not given you the spirit of fear if you say I'm not smart enough Gus says I'll give you wisdom you say I feel alone he said well I'll never leave you or forsake you you say I can't figure things out Gus's I'll direct your steps you say well I'm always worried and frustrated God says we'll cast all your cares on me in other words let me tell you something God's crazy about you if God had a refrigerator he'd have your picture on [Music] yeah so I pray three things I pray that you'll know God to do that all you have to do is open your heart storm let him in I pray that you'll experience the extravagant love of God because that will totally change and transform your life once you experience the love of God you will be so loving you'll become attractive to people you'll people will want to know your faith people want to know your God because they look at you say you've got something I don't have and then finally that you will allow God to do great things in your life I pray for that and the reason I pray that you will allow God to do great things in your life is because hang on God plans on doing great things in your life and the only person that can keep God from doing great things in your life is you that's why Paul closes this prayer out by what was my dad's favorite verse I've heard my dad quote this verse ten thousand times by the way my dad's 97 and a half and he I was with him the other day for lunch and he said John he said I've been in priority said I think my best days are still ahead of me it's 97 and a half yeah best days are ahead of him my father's gonna live till he dies and not get the two confused you know there's a bunch of people they're alive they're already dead but they just haven't made it official yet yeah yeah so here's what my dad would quote to me all the time look at it God can do anything you know oh I underlined this verse far more far more than you could ever imagine far more than you could ever guess far more than you could ever request in your wildest dreams far more hey not a little bit more far more the best dream that you have the best hope that you have the best prayer request that you have the greatest thought that you have God is far more than that and look what he says he does this he does this far more in your life in my life not by pushing us around but by working within us the far more that God has for you is on the inside of you you've got it already you don't need to go get it you already got it as God's child he now wants you to work it out it's what I call God's room God room is the space between all that I can do and all that God can do and Paul said I want you to know that when you have exhausted your 100% you've given it your very best when you make every day your masterpiece when you could look at life and say I gave it a hundred percent today he said when you at Maxwell when you hey max well when you have maxed out and got to the ceiling of your potential gods room is the floor of that ceiling and when I begin this relationship with him and I began to let him work all of a sudden God begins to work within me he begins to work within you and it becomes absolutely huge okay you're beautiful people now I see why Jordan Lowry love this place so much shoot you guys ought to go over to your other Church in Italy and let me take over for about a month here and just hang with the people you go to Italy and I'll come to heaven house then bow your heads with me close your eyes one question the first prayer requests that you would know God there are many in you that
