My friend is an engineer for a large international construction company that builds SEWERS. He is often greeted as a HERO when he arrives in a developing country to begin constructing the sewers. You can't fully appreciate the importance and value of sewers until you live in a city without them.
The Stuff you should know podcast also did a great episode on this worth looking at
The Joseph Bazalgette Victorian-era sewers that ended up being built after this are now reaching their limits, with London's old sewer systems struggling to cope with its massively increased population. Large amounts of sewage is discharged to rivers and waterways when stormy weather happens, causing pollution.
Another documentary which may interest you if you liked this documentary is called "The Five Billion Pound Super Sewer". It's about the construction of London's new £5 billion ($6.5bn) super-sewer due to start being used in 2022. It's going to stop 95% of all pollution into London's rivers and waterways, so should be a big environmental step.
i like how this has 90's british commercials in it, thats the guy from house at 8 mins in
The first scene irked me so much in this video, dude threw dipers in a trash can with no trash bag.
It still blows my mind how thousands of years of sanitation practices were left forgotten.
Fun fact: Sir John Harrison is the ancestor of none other than Kit Harington.
Not kidding.
I'm not sure what year this was produced, so I used a news article about the documentary as reference.
Perfect.
