I really like Michael Wood documentaries. It really struck me in this one when they said the black plague hit England, it started all around the coast and worked its way to the center of England. They could see it coming but no place to run....

thank you to OP for this video, and for turning me on to Mr. Wood.

This happens to be my main focus for Ancient and Medieval studies which is how the non-famous, everyday Joe and Janes lived.

Cheers OP! I have just finished watching the Terry Jones (of monty python) series on medieval lives which is on youtube too. Highly recommended.

RE: Seemingly incongruent portrayal of such white fabric and clothing, yet one cannot imagine being able to manage such bright and clean garments without a decent LG or Samsung washer/dryer combo. No to mention Clorox be bleach.

It turns out, after much research prompted by very similar curiosity myself some time ago, I learned that mostly HUMAN URINE was regularly used to brighten fabric as well as for bath, body and beauty care. Frightening I think.

I find white clothes are always too clean and bright in movies or documentaries like this, considering they had no good chemical witheners, used the same clothes for many days, weeks or months, had maybe a couple of those and laudry was made not much often. Consider that white collar and cuffs separate from the shirt were still a thing on the verge of XX century.
