hey this is Karen from curl house and today we are going to talk about gray hair so before we get started make sure you turn on your notifications and subscribe to the channel if you haven't done so already okay so how many of you are actually wearing your hair the color that comes out of your scalp gray if it's great I have tons of clients who are all gray but you can't tell cuz guess what I color it every month and that's okay but more and more clients and more and more women rather are deciding to stop coloring their hair and just let me be great including me I haven't call it my hair in four years you may not be able to see it with the way I'm styling my hair now but I have a ton of gray in the top of my hair and actually I like it I think it looks cute I think it looks cute and I do get compliments on it as well but the reason I stopped wearing the reason I stopped coloring my hair wasn't necessarily for style because at some point gray was trending people were actually coming to get their hair colored gray but I stopped coloring it simply because I just didn't feel like coloring it anymore that was just the truth I just did not feel like staying in the hair salon and additional one or two hours just to color my hair so I just stopped coloring it so now I'm just wearing it the way it is so that's just me that's my story but I just have a lot of clients now who are deciding to color it gray and I think as a stylist I think it's okay years ago maybe 15 20 years ago I may have discouraged someone a woman from not covering up their gray but now I think it's gorgeous I think it's fashionable and I think it's it's acceptable to have to not color your hair and just let it be great I do find the interesting though that in the natural hair community in general natural hair is acceptable we see it we celebrate women who decide to go natural it's a good thing however if someone decides to wear their hair great I don't think that celebrate it as much and I wonder why but anyway I'm not gonna get on my soapbox about that I want to talk to you about how you can transition your colored hair to gray hair if that's what you choose to do now this is my client miss Mildred I have been coloring her hair black for at least five years but earlier last year she decided that she was ready to embrace her gray so I am her number one cheerleader and I encouraged her let's do it she started asking me questions about well how do I transition my hair how do I color my black hair gray how do I get all of this color out of my hair and I talked to her about the process because it is a process to transition from previously colored hair or her case black hair to her gray hair she wanted to know did we do we dye her hair grey or do we strip the the black out of her hair and I told her no the best way to do it is to simply stop dyeing the new growth which is great that's the best way and that is the healthiest way to do it now there are different processes that you can do that to strip the the previously colored hair out of your hair but a lot of times particularly from women who have long hair and want to transition for grave to gray that process of removing the color can be very harsh on the hair which is why I don't recommend it my number one recommendation is just to stop coloring the hair so you will go through a process when you decide to stop coloring your hair you're going to have gray your new growth can be will be great and that can you know be a few inches to several inches and the tips are black and that is a process when you look at your hair I think that's when a lot of women start to struggle with continuing the process of going gray when the hair is two-tone but again I'm your number one cheerleader and I am your number one advocate to go gray so I'm going to help you so when that happens the best thing to do is to gradually trim a little bit of that black hair off the end so what we're doing with Miss Mildred we have been growing it out an inch or two here so about every month she comes in and I trim my itch or half an inch off of the end so this process has been taken place for about a year so this is what her hair looks like now I thought today would be the day that she cut off the rest of her black hair but she said no she's not ready yet so we will just continue in the process of growing a little at the root and trimming a little at the ends I'm thinking within the next two to three months she will be completely gray so this is a picture of her hair right now you can tell she has more gray hair than black hair so hurt her black hair actually I think it looks kind of don't like the black hairs on the tips it looks like it's supposed to be like that but what you do when you are transitioning again don't color it and then secondly it's very important to use a purple shampoo so here's a purple shampoo this one is by shimmering lights it's just been on the market for years you can get it from local Beauty Supply stores so you can get it from Sally's but there are numerous purple shampoos out on the market and a purple shampoo really works to neutralize the brassiness or yellow undertones sometimes that's in gray hair like grey hair just attracts just a lot of dirt and debris and just stuff from the elements the environment pollutants in the air stuff that you wouldn't normally see on your hand when your hair is dark gray hair picks up every if you use heat appliances Flatiron blow-dryer sometimes that can discolor your hair and make it a little Brasier the hair product you use may have dyes in them to change the color of your hair so purple shampoo really works to neutralize the yellow tints or brassy tints in your hair so when you are transitioning or if you are already gray I recommend that you use a purple shampoo when you're cleansing your hair to help keep your hair vibrant and that's what purple shampoo does so here's a picture again of Miss Mildred this is just of the purple shampoo just sitting in her hair the best way to use it is to wet your hair saturate your hair and use a little bit of purple shampoo you do not need a lot of course that term is relative it's really contingent upon how much hair you have but you need just enough to color to cover your hair typically what we do when we cleanse our hair we'll just put a pound of shampoo you don't need that because with the purple shampoo you can put too much if you've ever seen people just walking around with purple tinted hair and not supposed to be like that then more than likely normally I can tell they're using a little too much of that purple shampoo you can get it out it's just leaving a pigment on your hair so if you have tinted purple hair and it's not supposed to be like that now sometimes you can have purple hair like me I had purple hair and I colored it purple well supposed to be like that but if your purple hair is unintentional from using too much purple shampoo just continue to rinse your hair with a warm water and eventually the purple will come out but anyway when you're using a purple shampoo let it sit on your on your hair for about five minutes rinse it out and then just follow up with your regular shampoo and this will keep your gray hair looking vibrant and fabulous even when you have only an inch or two of gray hair coming in you can actually start using your purple shampoo then you do not have to wait until you have seven or eight inches of gray hair like Miss Mildred you can start using it when you have an inch of gray hair so this is another client of mine she is transitioning from her color black hair to gray hair and she decided that she was just ready to let it go she's been saying this for the last ten years so this time I think it's gonna stick I think we're gonna fully transition her she has a ton of hair a lot of hair so at this point because she only has a few inches of new growth we are pretty much doing her hair and updos twisted up twos protective styles so that she doesn't have like the two tones of the black in the gray doesn't stand out as much i think this style looks great I think it's fabulous I think it actually kind of blends to two textures it does draw attention to the to the to the gray right around the hairline but I think this looks great too so this is an option for a style or a look that you can do while you are transitioning to gray hair I think these protective styles really work early in the process when you have more black or colored hair than you do gray hair now it flip-flops like with miss Mildred my first client I showed you when you have more gray hair than black then the darker color is at the root but when you have more black hair than gray I think sometimes tucking away all of that dark hair doesn't draw as much attention to the gray hair so here's a style that you can do if you are transitioning and another thing that you may notice with gray hair gray hair tends to be wiry or coarse so during your transition or when you are all gray you may notice that your hair doesn't feel the same way felt before the gray it can't feel a little wiry I always say that gray hair kind of has a mind of its own because it does the texture changes because the pigment or melanin is no longer in the gray hair it changes to the texture so that's just something that you may need to know regardless you can still rock your gray so here are a few pictures of my clients who are all gray so you can see some have short cuts and look fabulous some have long hair here's a blowout with gray hair regardless of what your texture or what's your style you can still be a Silver Fox with your gray hair so until we talk again stay back
