the world's first ever case has been reported in china who is this man what is he suffering how serious is his condition and what does china say about this latest outbreak the information is patchy but we we are going to get to whatever we could find today we also want to discuss the larger question of why these virus jumps happen so often in china it bristles every time someone labels the country as a disease incubator but let's face it china reports too many disease outbreaks there were four in the last one year apart from the wuhan virus what does china have to say about all of this how should the world see this latest case on gravitas tonight we'll discuss also on the show good news from india new cases are steadily falling bad news children are still vulnerable almost 10 000 were infected last month in one district of maharashtra saudi arabia sets an example with a new rule on loudspeakers and mosques it also reignites an old debate we'll discuss why is football crazy week acl injuries typically require around six months to heal meaning one of the favorites for the gold will miss the olympics all together first the good news from india new infections are falling today india's daily count dropped to its lowest in 54 days the lowest in almost two months less than 150 000 new cases were reported on monday india's positivity rate has dropped below seven percent now active cases remain below 2 million the recovery rate has improved more than 92 percent of the patients have recovered in india in the last 24 hours more than 250 000 people have recovered in the last year and a half almost 26 million indians have recovered from the wuhan virus fatalities have fallen below 3000 in the last 24 hours around 2 800 people died in india this fall gives india time to prepare for a third wave a wave that we are told is inevitable a wave that is also expected to hit children hard in fact it has already begun in the second wave children are being infected in larger numbers and once again the state of maharashtra was the first and the biggest hotspot in one district alone more than 9 900 children tested positive for the wuhan virus we are talking about the district of ahmednagar where almost 12 percent of the cases were kids from newborns to 18 year olds children were infected in every age group here more than 3 000 children between 1 to 10 years of age were infected there were also cases of babies below 1 year of age more than 6 000 cases were of adolescents 11 to 18 year olds and around 95 percent of all of these cases were asymptomatic as the virus mutates and adults get vaccinated it is the children who remain exposed to whatever form this pandemic takes next the world is beginning to address this gap countries have started vaccinating children at least six of them have approved shots for 12 to 15 year olds india needs to catch up fast governments are ramping up pediatric facilities and hospitals but the focus should be on making sure that it doesn't come to that that in the months ahead our children go to schools rather than hospitals cases are down but clearly we are still reeling from the impact of the second wave what about china has china beaten the pandemic well it's hard to say because reliable information is hard to come by from china there are reports of fresh outbreaks on and off the latest one has come from the coastal province of guangdong a district was put under a partial lockdown after a new outbreak but here's something that's more worrying a new kind of outbreak a new kind of bird flu the first human case of this bird flu anywhere in the world what do we know about this only what china has chosen to reveal 41 year old man was infected with a new strain of bird flu it is called h10n3 it's the first time that a human has been infected with this train the case was detected in north west shanghai the patient was admitted to hospital on the 28th of april what kind of symptoms did he have the chinese press reports that he had he had a fever and some other symptoms there's no clarity on what these quote unquote other symptoms are china is calling this an accidental cross-species transmission authorities say it went from poultry to humans the virus and that this strain is less severe so for a change we know about the origins poultry to humans but how did it happen what is accidental cross-species transmission no answers yet the most worrying part is how frequently this happens in china a virus jumping from one species to another the wuhan virus let me tell you is not the exception in the last one year china has reported several disease outbreaks and we've been reporting on all of them a new influenza virus is spreading fast among chinese pigs no human to human transmission has been reported yet but the virus mutates quickly and this one has all the hallmarks of a pandemic causing virus this is according to experts from china a city in china's inner mongolia has reported a suspected case of bubonic plague the same disease that killed more than 50 million people in the 14th century europe bubonic plague is highly infectious often fatal it is transmitted by animals often marmots which are eaten in several regions in china this is news of another major outbreak in china and another cover-up we're talking about a city in north west china it's called the langcho city the disease we're talking about is called brucellosis more than 3 000 people are infected influenza brucellosis bubonic plague all these outbreaks happen during the wuhan virus pandemic and they all fit a pattern a virus jumps from animals to humans and thousands of people suffer and now we have a new strain of bird flu a new virus jumping from poultry to humans as always chinese officials are playing down the outbreak they say this train does not spread from one human to another have we heard this before yes we have china said the exact same thing about the wuhan virus is it does not spread from one human to another and look where we are today socially distancing and masking locked down and isolated because the virus does indeed spread from one human to another and we fervently hope that china is right this time and that the outbreak is nothing to worry about but we are wary of believing what chinese authorities say by the way china is also the original source of the bird flu in 1997 right after it took over hong kong the city was hit by a bird flu outbreak back then it was called the h5n1 virus officials in hong kong were reluctant to blame beijing but there was no doubt about the source 80 percent of hong kong's poultry came from mainland china hong kong ended up culling more than 1.3 million chickens ducks pigeons and other birds it did not name china as a source of the outbreak then in 2017 a report called china the quote unquote ground zero for a future pandemic the reason was once again bird flu in 2013 a new strain had begun infecting people in china by 2017 china had witnessed as many as five waves of this the last one was the deadliest by september 2017 more than 1500 cases had been reported and more than 600 people had died these are the official figures i must add that and they may seem like nothing when compared with the toll of this pandemic but this pandemic has also taught us that the virus keeps mutating it changes shape it can take deadlier forms so far thankfully bird flu has not escalated to a pandemic of global proportions but it is very much around it is spreading between december 2020 and january 2021 more than seven million birds were culled due to a new strain of bird flu this train too never reached humans but now we have another strain that does it has jumped species a virus that has infected humans and once again it has happened in china and if there's anything the world has learned from this pandemic it is to be on your guard when china says there is nothing to worry about we'll keep tracking the story for you yesterday we told you how twitter has restricted our story on abortion we told you how a factual story on reproductive freedom has been branded sensitive content how its reach has been restricted how twitter has failed to give any explanation for its action yesterday we also told you how social media platforms are manipulating and controlling conversations we listed numerous instances to show how platforms like twitter are becoming a threat to free speech and so many of you supported us for calling out manipulated social media and i really want to thank you all for that a lot of you also wrote to us narrating your own personal experiences and we learned how this muzzling of voices online is so rampant and blatant how social media platforms think they can get away with restricting the reach of some of the world's most prominent and influential voices because they raise uncomfortable subjects i have a very special guest joining me tonight on gravitas he's someone who has had a public war of words with twitter's top boss someone who's been blacklisted by twitter and believes that social media platforms are like british colonialists joining me live from california is vivek wadhwa he is an author and academician vivekwadwa good evening and a very warm welcome to you on gravitas hello bulky you told me your story with twitter why don't you share it with our audience tonight well um i was introduced to twitter by one of its founders biz stone he helped me get my twitter id at vadwa and he gave me a vip status so much so that for the longest time i didn't even see ads on twitter like normal people do and my following built up very rapidly until they had a ceo dick costolo and i started complaining about the sexism that i saw in the company that's it's a boys club this is a common problem in silicon valley that it's male dominated and these boys behave misbehaved literally so i raised the issue that twitter has an all-male board and how did twitter respond well he started attacking me on twitter he basically called me a fool a comedian basically carrot top is what he called me there was such an uproar that he had to relent and add women to his board but ever since then uh you know i people can't find me on twitter anymore uh so much so uh verification i've been a columnist globally syndicated columnist for the washington post for many many many years i used to be and i also wrote for a tech blog called venturebeat which is the one the most popular here in silicon valley every other writer was verified twitter would not verified me to today twitter has not verified me despite the fact i've requested this a couple of times and they won't verify me because they're still holding a grudge that's what the problem is what you're experiencing is this mindset that you see in silicon valley that we are superior it's a god complex they they really believe that they are right and uh but you know what we've been expert india has been experiencing with facebook and whatsapp i've read i mean i've written a book about it i wrote a book called your happiness was hacked how the tech industry is uh trying to control your mind and how you can fight back that's what the book was all about and i've been very vocal about it i also warned about the dangers of whatsapp on on indian media long ago well before anyone else was but this is a long battle i've had with the tech industry right and i would want you to know your opinion on why you think twitter chose to restrict uh a story on abortion of all things on what grounds does a platform that publicly champions free speech filter a conversation on reproductive freedom bulky this is some junior level uh twitter uh uh um been a product manager or uh social media manager who just decided that he or she didn't like you and they blacklisted you that's how it works you know during the days of the british they would have their junior you know officers come to india and they would suddenly become gods and dictate to people what they can and can't do this is what you have here you have some junior level person who arbitrarily made a decision there are no guidelines to follow or if they are guidelines they don't follow them they just do whatever they want to do so you have some junior uh you know babu who happens to be a twitter employee dictating what you and you can and can't uh do well you know they dictate who's popular who's not popular and just so that you know and our viewers knew it's been more than 36 hours twitter has not uh given us an explanation or bothered to respond uh on why they restricted our report uh vivek why do you liken social media platforms to british colonialists as you just did because you know if you look at the ads that these companies took out um you know saying you know protect free speech i mean the attack on the indian government if you look at what facebook did in australia essentially blacklisting the entire com entire country it's because these people have this mindset that we are better than everyone else you know when they blacklisted trump you can like or dislike trump that's irrelevant but the fact that they could blacklist a former president of the united states they have more power than governments do and that's what east india company was as well it had more power than the british you know government had and when it came abroad it started colonializing and and taking over entire countries this is what you have right now with the tech industry it's become so powerful that the politicians you know can't even rein them in so now you have uh the republicans who are firmly against social media and you have the democrats who sort of are against it yet nothing has happened i mean biden has been in power for you know many months now yet you have had no change in policy because that's how powerful these platforms are so they're now bent on colonializing india because they see this is a huge market opportunity china locked them out china was very smart in the way it locked them out and built its own social media platforms india hasn't been that smart indian you know leaders have been trying to follow the rules of capitalism follow the rules of open societies and do things the right way however these tech industries the tech companies are taking advantage of of india's weakness the fact that whatsapp is allowed now to build a digital currency and to now start you know doing its evil is because it somehow has persuaded the indian government to leave it alone and it's the same thing with twitter that even though you have uh you know the politicians now complaining about uh uh you know what it's doing they really haven't drained the company final question vivek uh social media is a part and parcel of our life today and today it's twitter and facebook tomorrow it'll be some other company how do we navigate around what we call a manipulated social media bulky this is a very serious stage this is the national security issue for india because now you have foreign companies dictating what's right and what's wrong i mean forget about abortion i mean silicon valley is actually left leaning and the employees are supporters of abortion so naturally they should have supported you and and promote they would normally have promoted it however some junior employee had had uh you know an issue with it and they and they blocked it but this is how powerful the tech industry is what has to happen is that the government has to take its role in europe you have the the countries coming together and the gdpr legislation was quite restrictive they're now talking about taking it two steps further india needs to set the example and reign these companies in it needs to now dictate clearly what the rules are and tell them that if you don't comply with our rules you're out it's not for you to decide what's right and what's wrong it's not for you to decide what our values should be and who we should consider to be breaking the rules or not the rules are not for you to set the rules are for us to set it's our society it's our values it's our morals and we decide what they are if our government does something you don't like then it's for the public to throw us out we're democracy and the way democracies work is that if the public are not happy with us they throw us out of power so if indians don't like you know what the its leaders are saying they should be booted out of power it's not for you twitter or facebook to tell us what we should believe and what we shouldn't believe in what is free speech and what is not free speech so the government has to now step up and do its job indeed uh thanks very much appreciate uh your time and you sharing your thoughts with us that was the author and academician vivek joining us live from california let's turn to saudi arabia it has decided to restrict the volume of loudspeakers at mosques this decision has been met with both applause and resentment a high decibel debate has begun questions are being asked and why saudi arabia of all countries has taken such a step let's try to understand first the facts of the case the islamic affairs ministry of saudi arabia passed an order last week on the use of loudspeakers at mosques this order states two main things number one that loudspeakers at mosques should be set at no more than one third of their maximum volume and number two the use of loudspeakers should be restricted for the call of the call to prayer rather than broadcasting full sermons what led to this decision growing complaints from saudi citizens and expats there are at least 94 000 mosques in saudi arabia 94 000 and most of them are at a walking distance from residential buildings the islamic affairs ministry says it received numerous complaints that the loud volume at these mosques was causing disturbance to children as well as the elderly defending the decision the islamic affairs minister abdul latif al-shaikh said and i'm quoting those who want to pray do not need to wait for the imam's call to prayer they should be at the mosque beforehand he further said that several television channels also broadcast prayers and quran recitals suggesting that the loudspeakers serve a limited purpose now this indeed is a major policy overhaul especially for a country that is home to two of the holiest sites in islam a country that is seen as a de facto leader of the islamic world a country where thousands of muslims go for pilgrimage every year riyadh views this as just another step in crown prince mohammed bin salman's liberalization drive one that will lead to a de-emphasis on religion and open a new era for saudi society but critics say this decision could be could trigger a global backlash against islamic practices not just on the use of loudspeakers but islamic practices in general there's widespread resentment on social media with many asking if loudspeakers at restaurants and cafes do not cause disturbance saudi arabia says this criticism is being spread by the quote-unquote enemies of the kingdom who just want to stir public opinion and riyadh by the way is not the first one to take such a step saudi arabia is not the first country to witness this time and again this controversy has broken out in different parts of the world there's one set of people who say that loudspeakers at mosques should be banned completely there's another that says they must be banned for all religious purposes all purposes rather religious or not and yet another who support the use of loudspeakers at places of worship and we've all seen how this debate plays out but what is the official stance of countries around the world we have some examples for you tonight in 2005 dubai's department of islamic affairs banned loudspeakers for daily prayers they permitted its use only for a call to prayer friday sermons and festivals same story in indonesia in 2015 the country's religious affairs ministry issued a circular which put a limit on the volume of loudspeakers and restricted their use only for the azan indonesia has the highest number of muslims in the world in nigeria there was a full-fledged crackdown on noisy churches and mosques in 2019 and this happened primarily in lagos where many religious places were shut and many others were forbidden from installing loudspeakers then we have pakistan where in 2015 the punjab government passed an ordinance to regulate the use of loudspeakers under this ordinance only one loudspeaker was permitted at a mosque and that too only for the azan and in india we've seen numerous complaints being filed against loudspeakers at mosques in recent years we've seen a lot of this a lot of this controversy also play out but what is the law say well there's no official consensus really in 2017 the madras high court observed that freedom of religion religion was a fundamental right and it cannot be interfered with but the court also stressed that mosques must follow supreme court guidelines on the volume of loudspeakers then in may 2020 the alabad high court held that the azan could be recited from the minarets of mosques without using any amplifying device and just two months back in march 2021 the karnataka state board of restricted mosques from using loudspeakers between 10 pm and 6 am the bottom line is this be it mosques temples or churches loudspeakers at any place of worship are not pleasing to the ears and if one practice is regularly being called out as nuisance if it is regularly being touted as something that infringes on somebody's personal space it may be time for some reflection rather than resentment think about it meanwhile the world's oldest football tournament has triggered a controversy the copa america 2021 it features the footballing nations of south america the land of pele maradona and of course lionel messi you would expect the people to be thrilled but they're not south america is battling on two fronts one against the wuhan virus and the second against political instability not the perfect time for a football carnival and it's not just the copa america all big ticket sporting events are going ahead as if the pandemic is behind us why can't organizing bodies cancel these events why do they put tournaments above human lives here's a report this is not the time to host a copa america because it will bring tourists here and the pandemic is not over yet we have not been vaccinated brazil is not the best country to receive a lot of people because of the pandemic the cases are increasing they say a third wave is coming when brazilians say no to football rest assured something is wrong latin america's biggest carnival is coming to town but there is fear not frenzy on the streets the coppa america has already been passed up by two hosts [Music] colombia where the streets are crawling with cops and protesters [Music] and argentina where the hospitals are packed with wuhan virus patients so the organizers have opted for brazil it's a decision that puts the game above human lives brazil is the biggest virus hotspot in south america reporting more than 40 000 cases per day along with more than one thousand deaths so why did the government agree because this is precisely what president jared bolsonaro wanted a mirage of normalcy as for the organizers it's all about the money the copa america is staged by the south american football body called con me ball 2020 was a bad year for them with matches suspended losses ran into 14.5 million dollars the copa america is key to turning the tide they're expecting 487 million dollars in revenue so pandemic or protest con me ball wants kickoff come june 14th the backlog of sporting events from 2020 has created a crowded calendar this year the copa america and the euros in june the tokyo olympics and wimbledon in july the suspended indian premier league in september october and then the t20 world cup in november it's great news for fans but a distraction for governments these tournaments are a melting pot of fans fertile ground for the wuhan fighters to spread but money trumps health concerns take the olympics for instance japan has two options stage the games and risk an outbreak or cancel the games and lose 21 billion dollars the government wants the games it's the same with the ipl indian cricket was said to lose 530 million dollars so the tournament was postponed not cancelled the organizers are in dubai to plan the rest of the tournament what's happening is this the business of sports has become its worst enemy contracts and sponsorships are legally binding players are measured in euros and dollars not their worth on the pitch the result is a dichotomous world where the lines for tickets and vaccines sneak through the same streets but only one of them actually needs to be there we will report v on world is one here's one thing that we keep telling you on gravitas do not trust health products blindly and do not judge food products by their packaging and we have a case study for you tonight it is on the world's biggest food group nestle it is a parent company of maggie kitkat iced tea and nest cafe these are household names nestle promises you good food good life but is it actually selling you unhealthy products many of these recently failed to meet health standards nestle's products were studied by australia's health star rating system 60 percent of them did not meet the recognized definition of health sixty percent an internal nestle document was then leaked to the media this was even more damaging the document said some of nestle's products will never be healthy no matter how much they renovate the financial times reported the details of this internal document of nestle here's what it said only 37 of nestle's food and beverages by revenue achieved a 3.5 5 health star rating seventy percent of the food products seventy percent failed to meet that threshold as did ninety six percent of its beverages and ninety nine percent of its confectionary and ice cream this assessment did not include infant food pet food coffee instant formula and specialized health food now health food is a term that we have a big problem with and we have told you repeatedly how the term health is abused and misused in advertising nestle 2 promises health and wellness in fact it is at the very heart of the company's campaign look at it nestle's pitch has been called out now the company says it is looking at its entire portfolio meaning its entire range of products to ensure that they are meeting nutritional needs and supporting a balanced diet nestle india has issued a statement and here it is nestle india believes that nutrition is a fundamental need and the food industry has a vital role to play in enabling healthier lives driven by our purpose we are constantly striving to increase the nutrient profile of our products as well as innovate with new and nutritious offerings so what does this mean for nestle it's a swiss company and the swiss group has been on a roll this pandemic nestle recorded the strongest quarter in a decade its sales are up 40 courtesy home bakers and coffee drinkers it's so health products also benefited with people stocking up vitamins and supplements but this leaked report this internal document can now hamper nestle's expansion into the health and wellness category it also rains on the goodwill that nestle has earned during the pandemic the company claims to have given financial help and aid to more than 50 countries you see the last thing that a company needs is to be branded unhealthy at a time when healthy is the new and biggest sales pitch so what does a leaked internal document mean for you and me are we staring at another ban on nestle products to answer this we must take a closer look into the swiss company nestle sells in 186 countries it has 2 000 plus brands and their products range from baby food to frozen food and pizza the brands that scored the worst in the recent ratings include digiorno crossover crust pizza hot pockets pepperoni pizza san pellegrino drink and nesquik now if you're watching us from a country where these brands are available then you must review your shopping cart before you check out if you're watching us from india then the story changes a little nestle sells nine only nine out of its 35 billionaire brands in india 46.3 of its sales in india come from milk and value-added milk products like yogurt 29.5 percent of its sales come from prepared food like maggi 13.2 from chocolate and confectionaries like kitkat and 11.1 percent from beverages like coffee now most of these products were not included in the ratings does that mean they're safe and healthy we can't say that while leslie's india page boasts of being the first company to balance health and taste history shows otherwise flashback to 2015 when nestle's most popular product in india was in a soup i'm talking about maggie instant noodles excessive lead was found in them this is from 2015 let me remind you the company was also accused of mislabeling msg or monosodium glutamate soon it was banned in india the product was relaunched five months later today it holds sixty percent of the market share in the instant noodles category now nestle's only document says that most of its food is unhealthy will india's food safety and standards authority review nestle products after this we do not know what we can tell you is that this story is yet another reminder of the many things that are wrong with packaged and instant food products and nestle may not be an exception sticking with food let me tell you about an emerging dietary trend meal worms what is that insect-based cuisine it is being called the next superfood you can find cricket pasta and meal worm smoothies on menus in europe but people are still hesitant and i would understand why to try them out in fact insects do not exactly look appetizing on a plate so why are chefs and nutritionists around the world pushing for them this report tells you [Music] modern day gastronomy has a checklist tasty healthy and good looking the last one might sound strange but let's admit it a dashing plate of food can make anyone feel famished part of a good plate up is sticking to beautiful ingredients which means nothing with wings eyes or squirmy bodies but try telling that to jason bobas he is a businessman from kuwait and he is convinced that these super worms are the future of modern cuisine in this dingy little room bourbous breeds his darkling beetles famous for their high protein content he is trying out a few recipes before putting it on the menu i expect that these worms will be in the restaurant orders in the future my ambition is for worms to be a successful food alternative for humans not just for birds insects are not new to the gulf palette they have a long tradition of eating baked and dried locusts but their consumption has fallen in modern times partly because of the aesthetics so how do you make insects look appetizing in europe they're trying out fancy dishes like cricket pasta and mealworm smoothies this chef at a paris cafe swears by them pasta made from mealworm flour mixed with sweet potato and mealworms it's really very good i'm not pretending it's the ideal dish for a first timer there are some really interesting flavors i find it delicious because there are flavors that we know cereals pasta it has a classic taste with sauteed vegetables there aren't many people who could say they don't like that we'll take his word for it insect-based restaurants are popping up across europe earlier this year the eu's health and food safety commission cleared mealworms for human consumption since then the agency has been swamped by requests from pasta to bread and biscuits turns out you can make just about anything with insects but why the sudden obsession with them what's wrong with our existing food mealworms and insects are sustainable they exist by the millions around us so breeding and consuming them puts less pressure on the environment as opposed to say poultry farms we have population growth growth we have environmental pressure the fact that there is a growing demand for proteins and so on and in that context insects can offer a really interesting alternative insects are healthy they're nutritious they offer minerals vitamins fat and therefore they can really help us with the switch to a more sustainable and healthy diet and food system regulation is catching up with this new craze but unlike veganism or gluten-free diet this will take a lot more convincing the challenge is twofold first removing the gross factor and second making insect look tasty a good start might be naming these dishes differently after all chocolate coated grasshopper isn't exactly making anyone drool bureau report we on world is one cultural genocide what comes to your mind when you hear these two words i'm sure most of you would think of nazi germany and the jews or china and the uyghurs or myanmar and the rohingyas what about canada the beacon of multiculturalism why don't we ever think of canada this is a country where a cultural genocide of indigenous population went on till the 1990s where indigenous children were separated from their families and subjected to forced assimilation at residential schools do you know how many children died in this genocide six thousand what's the proof you may ask and we will tell you about mass graves that continue to be unearthed to this day the latest case is from british columbia where the remains of 215 children have been discovered buried on the grounds of a former indigenous school 215 children some of them as young as three years old it's a heartbreaking discovery and a grim reminder of canada's shameful history who were these children who operated the school and where does the accountability accountability lie with the canadian government or the catholic church our next report explores this is the kamloops indian residential school in british columbia on the exterior it looks like any other school but it operated like a re-education camp for indigenous children the horrors that unfolded within its walls have been documented in several reports the first proof has emerged four decades later [Music] the remains of 215 children have been found buried on the school's grounds they were discovered with the help of a ground penetrating radar device the discovery has confirmed that the school was the site of a cultural genocide authorities say more bodies may be found in the days to come what i've heard from many of them is the fact that you know the ones that they know um were missing and never came back were told that they ran away um so you know that still haunts and you know a lot of those triggers have popped up with this year fine of 215 children tributes are pouring in at the school's gates mourners are holding vigils in the honor of the dead they say canada must excavate indigenous schools across the country to discover the extent of the trauma and to give closure to the families who were told that their children had run away certainly no surprise at all everybody in the first nations community knew that there were mass graves we've been calling it for years we've been telling the government for years that there are mass graves in every single residential school but they didn't listen to us back in canada's capital ottawa all flags on federal buildings are flying at half mast including the peace tower flag above the canadian parliament the prime minister of canada says the news breaks his heart he says the discovery is a painful reminder of canada's dark history but canadian lawmakers say expressing remorse won't be enough they want the government to pay damages to the families who had suffered kamloops was just one of the many state-funded christian schools operated jointly by the canadian government and the catholic church the job of these schools was to assimilate indigenous children by converting them to christianity and not allowing them to speak native languages this was often done through verbal and physical abuse an inquiry commission report into the matter found that a hundred fifty thousand aboriginal children were separated from their families at nearly 6 000 children were killed in this cultural genocide in 2008 the canadian government apologized in parliament for these crimes infamously said to kill the indian in the child today we recognize that this policy of assimilation was wrong has caused great harm and has no place in our country then in 2018 the catholic church was asked for a formal apology but the request was rejected by pope francis himself who worried that an apology may invite potential damages too report we own world is one do you know what day it is apart from being the first of june it is also the global day of paris a day dedicated to a duo who embodied multiple institutions they say parental love is the most selfless love you must have heard this but have you realized that over the years parental love also becomes the love that we take for granted the most it's an oddity one that we must address and tonight happens to be a perfect occasion so let's take a moment to appreciate the role that our parents play in our lives let's start by looking at our own lives today the pandemic has forced all of us to play multiple roles we're doubling up as cooks educators caregivers tech professionals the good thing is that this is all temporary or so we hope once the pandemic is over we can all go back to our normal lives no more zoom calls while cooking but when it comes to our parents their entire lives are spent and will be spent playing multiple roles from the moment a child is born parents become the primary caregivers by default they slowly don a teacher's hat they become mentors a child's first set of friends and atms start with pocket money and there's no looking back when a child's computer or cell phone breaks down she calls she calls out to her parents first and they're expected to magically repair the broken system how else will she watch peppa pig when a child is hungry she calls out to her mother and expects her to serve her favorite food immediately and most of the times the parent ensures that the child is not disappointed sacrifices are made budgets are tweaked and plans are changed in order to give children everything they want and need but we soon forget all of this our relationship with our parents changes with age sometime around the teens it is perhaps the most bitter we start prioritizing our friends over parents we start finding faults in them with the family and with age we also start taking the sacrifice of our parents for granted it's one of the many things wrong with our world today we overlook our parents struggle we abandon elderly parents we are too busy to respond to missed calls from them and all of these are bitter facts here's what else is parenting is a two-way street and for it to be successful and harmonious parents too must be open to changing with the times for example they must acknowledge mental health problems it is one of the biggest issues among teens and young adults today parents must also respect a child's choices be it educational ideological religious or personal parents must respect boundaries be open to learning the last one here has snatched many parents from their children in india alone more than 9 000 children have either been orphaned or abandoned because of the pandemic the last one here has also taught us one thing we should tell people how we feel about them while they're around instead of pouring your heart out in condolence messages on social media once they're gone talk to them while they're with you so this global parents day let's skip social media posts pick up our phones call up your parents or children as the case may be and tell them how much you love them it's both easy and rewarding tell us how it went we'll wrap the show we leave you as always with gravitas images thanks very much for watching
