cause there's a grace to be is [Music] well good day my friends your old pal joined the lion coming to you from a rainy dayton ohio but we have a fun trip planned today because we have my grandpa along for the ride this should be a blast days with jordan the lion begins now so the reason i brought my grandpa along today is because we are going to experience together he's been here before but i never have the american packard museum the old packard motor car because what i didn't know was he was telling me in the 30s and 40s this was more of a prestigious automobile to own than even the cadillac look at that revolving display in there how cool and apparently they have some celebrity cars [Music] so here we are they're telling me that uh 1917 this was opened as a packer dealership and the service center would have been straight through those doors now this car this was not one of the factory colors that they offered a man actually purchased this in west virginia for his daughter and had a custom color made for called orello it's a 1934 super 8 sport and basically the story was that she hated the color and didn't want to drive the car so his wife ended up driving the car and now it's on display here and that's my grandpa suddenly walked in he looked at that he said now do you understand why it was more prestigious than the cadillac look how beautiful that is and not only are we going to see some amazing packards just visually but historically they have some amazing stuff here they have the godfather purse and they also have al capone's last car so let's go explore my grandpa's already started that's a 1930 model 734 boattail speedster brand new it would have been a little over seven thousand dollars look at that man that is pure class [Applause] and this car they said this was actually the car that general dwight d eisenhower used for a parade vehicle so they basically would have just put it in gear and let it coast when he was in parades not president eisenhower's time general eisenhower this is a 1930 convertible sedan by brewster and it says that brewster's slogan at the time was carriages for the american gentleman and my grandpa's pointing out that it says on here an average house at the time costed seven thousand dollars and that's what this car costed new do you ever have a packard papaw no [Music] oh yeah my uh my grandpa's family used to sell chrysler's in this area and he said he took one in on trade and kept it i just love those hit ornaments and take a look at this 1928 custom eight beautiful car beautiful color this one almost looks like it was meant to be a chauffeur's car there's little seats back there and look at the hood ornament on this one and then here's just a bear chassis it says that packard was so proud of their vehicles at the time sometimes they would off and take one of these chassis and just put it out on display in one of their showrooms and it would allow the uh the salesman to tempt the buyer showing them the innovation and then look at their slogan up on the wall ask the man who owns one now let's follow my grandpa into the showroom he's already in there this would have been the service center back when it was a dealership here in dayton now this is a 1920 jesse vincent speedster says they gave jesse vincent the head of packard engineering carte blanche to make a car that would just blow everybody's mind so this is what he created said they used to show it off to celebrities and dignitaries beautiful car isn't it man even have a photo of him in there and this is really cool it says lindy's fastest automobile right in there saying that when colonel lindbergh was um checking out one of the new packard diesel airplane engines they gave him a ride in this car and he said it was the fastest thing he'd ever experienced or fastest car he'd ever experienced he himself was at the wheel and he proved to spectators that he could speed on the ground when it is safe to do so as well as he can in the air so there he is in this car man these are just beautiful i love the colors on these green look at that two-tone even look at the wheels wow these are pretty fast for their day weren't they papal pretty fast for their day oh yeah yeah not compared to now but they go up to 100 miles yeah you're right that is moderate air conditioning isn't it pull that out that's interesting to apologize show me that's the temperature gauge for your radiator so you could see it while you were driving that's interesting you don't think of that kind of stuff now your birth year papa you could have had one of these oh you had to crank it and bust your arm that one's even monogrammed and my grandpa was saying he likes the rumble seats and i love they have a little service center over here 12 cylinder huh wow they call it 12 a twin six it's almost like a v coil it's a 1932 twin six convertible sedan grandpa was just showing me that this one actually has two windshields you'd have to open the door pull this thing up put the windshield down we'll see that too often so this car was purchased new by miss mod gamble nippert she was the daughter of james gamble the owner of ivory soap inventor of ivory soap and she purchased this car new in cincinnati she always drove the car herself which was rare for a woman of substance at the time it says maude was a firm believer in the hereafter and when she passed away in 1937 her will stipulated that the car be regularly maintained to be ready for her return family respected her wishes until the deaths of her last heirs in 2012. don't worry mod we're not gonna drive it just looking it's a really cool story mods car he's loving this my grandpa used to come here with his best friend until his best friend passed away he said i haven't been there in about eight or ten years i'll go with you today it's a 1914 runabout there's big tires on there look at the front of it not beautiful so we talked about one member of the proctor gamble family this is another this was colonel william proctor former head of procter gamble this was his car and he did not like opulent displays of wealth so he immediately had it painted battleship gray [Laughter] said he drove it around only a couple of months before he passed away didn't win anything flashy on it no chrome nothing you can see it's all just inside it's just black and then his estate donated it to the museum look at that some of the colors they did were pretty interesting this gray this is the 1937 touring 12 touring sedan and look at the hood ornament for that take a look at that packer motor car company of detroit 1899 to 1956 manufacturing trucks and was leading supplier of heavy duty trucks to the allies in the great war world war one in 1915 packard built more trucks than cars supplying allies including canada england france russia finland and others us army alone had over ten thousand packard trucks and here's one they're very proud of this was their famous 1903 gray wolf racer they called it the gray wolf because it was the first car of its day to reach over 60 miles per hour 60 and this would probably be a bit of a ride wouldn't it you'd feel it feel the wind blowing through your hair there's someone driving the gray wolf this is so cool see how they've utilized this old space so now we're gonna go ahead and head over to the second showroom next door wow so this whole side this whole section this building is all post world war ii vehicles now this one they were telling me was donated by the estate of perry como singer perry como he loved his packard this was a 1953 caribbean except introduced mid 53 for the pan american show the styling and differences included a leaded in hood scoop chrome rocker panels and most notably a fully cut rear wheel opening with chrome wheel arches so you can see how big that is they've even got an oil pan because it's apparently still dripping and it was of course owned by the great harry komo check out the fins in the back some of the notable traits of this car and here we have a continuation of the caribbean perry's was in 1953. this is the 1954 caribbean awesome body style i really dig the two-tone style and everything in the seats the 1955 caribbean convertible pink black and white what caused the uh the decline of packard papal or when did that start happening after the war i couldn't keep up with gm oh gm was producing them faster or just better quality better quality more advanced technology bigger engines and then here we have the 1956 model caribbean convertible no blue in the seat tones i was kind of curious as to whether they would do that or not then here we have the 1956 hardtop version and then check out what's behind this 1941 clipper 6 army staff car [Applause] and here it is look at that guy wow 1948 henry landau three-way hearse in 1972 francis ford coppola's movie the godfather mob boss don vito corleone is taken to the cemetery in this beautiful hearse the godfather was nominated for 10 oscars and won three this hurst is called a new three-way side servicing car because it enables the user to load and unload caskets from both sides and the rear of the vehicle so here you can see wow the glass is broken right there but it's original so that makes it very cool they even plastic wrapped the seats inside there's the doors the double doors here is there's inside the hearse i don't know man to me that is pretty freaking cool to see the hearse from the godfather glad to know that it's well preserved and on display somewhere because this museum is open i think wednesday through sunday oh as i'm looking at this window i just noticed the uh the bullet shatter right up there here's a packard clipper it's kind of a cool body style 1954 and this is a 1953 mayfair and then look at this one with the wood paneling i never much cared for that kind of wood paneling look on a vehicle you can see here they did another style of face lift to the car with that same wood paneling idea not the same idea but using wood paneling on the car so take a look at this navy blue packard here i don't understand why they don't have the lights turned on kind of displaying its beauty a little bit better but this is a very historic car take a look and it's incredibly beautiful this 1947 clipper was the last of the classic darren clipper design cars this particular car was owned by the notorious chicago mafia boss al capone he bought this in the fall of 1946 this car was to be his last as he died in january of 1947 car was driven by capone chauffeur and bodyguard a man known as motorcycle mike upon capone's death mike was given the car and kept it until the late 70s after a long period of negotiation the car was sold to the current owner who would find various nine-millimeter luger casing during restoration wow the preferred weapon of motorcycle mic wow very cool the last car of al capone so that's our motorcycle mike with us at and al would have sat back there so this one i when i saw it i was like i've seen those before i thought clark gable had owned a car similar to this and sure enough yeah this wasn't clark gables but this was the 1940 by darren convertible victoria by darren and he built the first of this iconic packard darren cars for actress joan blondell had suicide doors and became all the rage for hollywood stars packard darren's being sold to clark gable errol flynn and rosalind russell and then here we have a 1953 cavalier touring sedan packard never really changed its objective which was to be like the the upscale luxury looking car they always wanted to be the top of the line designs here we have a 1946 packard taxicab i love the way they did the grill the whole front and everything the whole front end just love the design of that so this is interesting this is a 1952 parisian coupe by pinning farina who did some custom designs back in the 40s and 50s for alfa romeo and lancius and this was they were designing the 1952 packard and it ended up not going into production ever and a collector apparently found the original plans for it and had it built so this is what was supposed to be 1952 packard that never got built [Music] so it was in 1995 we're now car collector carl schneider obtained the original plans and custom built this [Music] you got to love people like that don't you so this car is pretty interesting this was a 1951 uh packard that a racer named john travoe used for one of his carrera pan america races and that's a race that goes um like a treacherous race across mexico from border to border and he had a 15 year old mechanic they almost won it and it says here that uh his uh 15-year-old mechanic's name was pablo and in 1995 pablo restored this completely back to operating condition of the way it was the day of the race and it's now here the packard museum and then there is a picture of it or of the racer and pablo john and pablo up there [Music] it's kind of cool they still have one of the offices set up too as though you're going to buy a car come in here and make the deal all right my friends i hope you enjoyed this i want to thank steve deak elizabeth merritt erica prince kim halper christie holly jarrett o'hara and crystal copenhaver for between my newest patreons i hope you enjoyed seeing the packard museum today with me and my grandpa and seeing the al capone last car the godfather hearst pretty cool day thank you all for being here we'll see y'all next time goodbye to be
