I'm Bernina expert Amanda Murphy and I'd like to show you my every circle quilting rulers they're part of my good measure ruler collection for Brewers sewing so there's five circles in the set which basically gives you ten different sizes of circles here I'm going to quilt pebbles or circles in sashing so I've gone ahead and brought up my bobbin thread and I'm very careful not to bring down my presser foot when my rulers anywhere around because I don't want to crash into the ruler I bring the ruler up after I brought down my presser foot and here you can see I'm using the lines on the side of the ruler to make sure that I'm staying in the center of the sashing as I quilt my circles so I'm going to quilt around and note I'm trying to go kind of it as a steady speed that keeps my stitches steady or two so I'm going to do one full circle and another half so I can get up to the top I'm holding on to those threads as I start to stitch and then later I can clip them I've gone over them once so it's fine fine to go ahead and clip them then I'm going to move up my ruler and you'll note that the black curved lines of my ruler lie right on top of my previous stitches this helps me ensure that my pebbles are quilted in a straight line I'm also though looking at their side lines to ensure that the pebbles are being stitched in the middle of the sashing so here I go again around the circle I'm doing a circle and a half this time in the opposite direction and when I get to the top I can tell I'm at the top because I'm at that center line I move up the ruler so now again the lines of my ruler are on top of my previously stitched circles and I just continued up the sashing area until the design is completed I always like to choose a circle that's slightly narrower than the sashing because I think it's hard if you had a two inch sashing and you chose a two inch circle it's awfully hard to get it to meet at the sides of the sashing in exactly the right way it's much more forgiving if you choose a circle size that's a little smaller than your sashing area to begin with this ruler like the other rulers in the line has a non-skid backing and two colors of markings next I'd like to show you how to quilt scallops so once again I bring my bobbin thread to the top I usually start off my stitching with a series of very small stitches but if you're doing a quilt for show you might want to start off at your normal stitch length then go back and knot and then bury the threads but I usually just do a few stitches very close together and when I'm talking very close I mean it look like a point four or 0.6 and now I'm bringing up my ruler note how I brought up the ruler after my presser foot was already down I don't want to crash on my ruler so now I'm lining up the lines on the mid mid lines on the ruler with the edge of my quilting area I could use other lines to line that up to either the lines at the bottom or the top of the roller and get a completely different design so that's that's one of the things that makes ruler workers so fun is just discovering new ways to use the rulers themselves okay so now I'm going to move my ruler you can see I quilted a semicircle but I could have just as easily used one of the other lines in the ruler so like that line would produce a shallower curve in that line would produce an even shallower curve so there's lots of markings to make many designs accessible I'm going to continue on along the row and when I get to the edge of the quilting area I'm going to create a mirror image of this design so I'm actually gonna use another ruler a straight ruler to come down the side of my sashing to about relatively the same point on the other side I don't measure this you could measure it but I usually just wing it and then I try to make sure my rulers in the right position so right there I've lined it up and I've actually extended that little chalk line so I know where my stitching should meet so that this design will be truly symmetrical when you choose to do a scallop and the scallop actually extends more than halfway into the border you get this awesome petal and diamond design and I should say that all the rulers come with instructions for some different designs there's a lot more designs in my ruler work quilting an idea book because you can do an infinite number of things with circles now want you to note here I'm stopping I'm not gonna try to go around that whole semicircle all at once it's a pretty big semicircle instead I'm going to do a quarter of a circle a quarter of the circle I'm not afraid to stop because I have the ruler to help me now I'm going to show you how to quote using those other lines quilts shallower scallops so you can see I just I just aligned my ruler a little differently there's really no difference and you have to make sure to use the same line each time or you get unintended consequences [Music] next we'll quilt a petal design so you can see in this block I've already marked the center lines but the horizontal in the vertical Center and I'm looking at that intersection okay and I've and I've chosen a ruler that I think has a nice curve for petals of this size there's no right or wrong really I've gone ahead and I'm brought up my bobbin thread and now I'm gonna bring over the ruler but note that I always bring my presser foot down before I bring my ruler over and what I'm in essence gonna do is connect this point to the center point so I'm quilting around the side of the ruler if I had used a shallower or I guess a bigger circle it would make a shallower curve that's not wrong it's just a different design and that's what makes ruler work so fun so now you can see I'm quilting to the next corner and usually I try to quilt in the direction of least resistance because you know if you back out of something you can get a little pucker and usually you want to avoid that so I always try to go in in the easiest direction I can and almost create an s-curve okay so I've almost finished the design here and come back this design looks great in both traditional and modern quilts I've gone ahead [Music]
