[Music] after the huge success of Resident Evil in 1998 Sega released their take on capcom's phenomenal Survivor horror series with deep fear it all takes place in an underwater facility that houses several Special Forces as the player you take on the role of John Mayor is to quickly realize the facility isn't all that it seems and underneath its somewhat normal appearance lies a deep and disturbing secret this being several experiments that have ultimately resulted in mutated monstrosities breaking out of their captivity with only JN and a handful of crew members left to resolve the situation now if there's one thing to be said about deep fear's gameplay is that yes on the surface this is nothing more than a clone of a much more popular series but that isn't to say that it doesn't try different things that actually help it stand out like other survival horror titles the goal is to get to the end of the game while managing your items and ammo while maintaining your health naturally there's a wide variety of enemies you'll come into contact with throughout the adventure which all pose their own unique challenge to the player that's not the only threat you have to contend with is the very air you breathe is by far the biggest enemy you'll face scattered throughout the facility are small yellow boxes that regulate the air pressure throughout the ship which you'll constantly have to replenish in order to stay alive it's a really neat inclusion that adds an extra layer of tension to the already terrifying Prospect of encountering monsters overall deep fear is quite easily one of the best games on the Sega Saturn that managed to build upon the many survival horror standards set by Resident Evil all the while planting enough unique ideas that help differentiate it from its clear inspiration if you're up for the challenge this one definitely deserves a spot in your collection steam gear Mash is easily one of the best hidden gems for the Sega Saturn which released in Japan in 1995 and unfortunately would never make its way west it's a shame really as it only adds to the list of incredible games that never got a chance over here but thankfully steam gear doesn't really need an understanding of the language to enjoy making it one of the most import friendly games out there it all revolves around a girl in her robot who one day encounter an alien ship that kidnaps a girl leaving it up to The Brave Little Robot to save his friend it's essentially an isometric platforming shooter that takes place over six main levels and it may not sound like much at first but these areas are huge in scope with exploration being at the core of the game play as you Traverse each of them you start out with a simple cannon that's used to take on enemies and also interact with many of the environmental puzzles that litter each of the levels and along the way you'll come across more powerful weapons and powerups that make the Journey of saving your friend all the more enjoyable the controll in Steam gear is tight and responsive and sees you being able to shoot in eight different directions it eventually comes to the point that controlling the character becomes second nature making it a game that can be enjoyed by players of all skill levels and ages of course the fact that the game only consists of six levels means it can be beaten quite quickly in about 4 to 5 hours which is the only negative I can throw it it would have been nice to see the game favor expanded with more levels but it's obviously nothing that completely ruins the game overall steam gear Mash is a great little title that never got the respect it deserved just like the sa satin [Music] itself Gro fight is the third entry in the extremely underrated power Instinct series and takes the tag team mechanics that were very popular at the time and adds its own take on the concept while it's not the most original fighting game in the world groon fight does what it does within the 2D genre extremely well by offering up a series of eccentric characters who all not only differ in appearance but abilities as well the gamep play shares much in common with many of the other 2D Fighters you know and love and utilizes a standard six button setup with a huge focus on Landing in Combos and special moves with the usual directions and buttons you'll be accustomed to as I mentioned earlier tagging is at the center of the gamep playay but adds its own little twist on the concept that sees your inactive character sitting on the sidelines and gradually gaining back their health this adds a nice mix of strategy to each fight where the careful pulling out of a character could mean the difference between Victory or defeat now much like the previous games it's not all just about Landing hits and combos is the stress meter also makes a return with a few changes it can now stock up to n instances with each fighter starting out with one slot ready to go at the beginning of each fight these special moves provide some of the more impressive moments during each encounter and give the game a style that can call its own speaking of style the handdrawn graphics are beautiful and the music is also A Step Above the Rest with hip-hop influences that add to the game's mood and tone overall the game play is fast and even though it's not incredibly hard to beat the multiplayer mode adds another reason to boot the game up once you're done and it's here where it truly begins to flourish if you and find a copy on the cheap then groov on fight is one game you'll want to give a go legend of Oasis is a prequel to a little known action adventure on the Sega Genesis known as Beyond Oasis originally planned to be released on the doomed 32x add-on production was eventually moved over to the Saturn and this is most likely why it retained its somewhat simple appearance and wasn't pushed into the 3D r as the player you're tasked with tracking down six Elemental Spirits in order to become the spirit King of the The Oasis but of course it's not going to be easy as you're constantly chased down by your enemies who will stop at nothing to prevent you from reaching your goal exploration is the most common aspect of the game play with the player having to Traverse huge areas which are filled with both enemies and puzzles to solve dungeons are long and winding and require a Keen Eye to advance until the end and here is where the spirits come into play as each one you require along the way grants you new abilities that serve as your means to access previously locked areas very much in the vein of the Zelda games these range from putting off Flames opening up cracks in the ground pulling switches as well as each Spirit having at least one strong attack to use in battle visually it's clear that the game's beautifully drawn Sprites have survived the test of time and still look incredible to this day there is no doubt that it is a graphically beautiful game with Lush environments and a clear artistically consistent style that permeates throughout each location you visit and every creature you defeat even though it's quite short when it comes to its length Legend of a is still a worthwhile adventure to undertake with its unique gameplay elements that help it stand on its own and its vibrant world that will draw you back in time and time again if you can find it for a good price don't hesitate to pick this one up shining the holy Ark puts you into the shoes of ARA a mercenary who's tasked with bringing down a rogue ninja who's wreaking havoc amongst the kingdom it's pretty much your typical RPG fair with a few plot twists and memorable characters thrown in but where the experience truly excels it's with its gameplay the first thing to get out of the way when it comes to shining the holy Ark is that yes it is a firsters Dungeon Crawler which may turn off some familiar with the previous games in the series even I was skeptical when first going in but due to the way the game is structured many of the common issues you'd expect are entirely circumvented the manner in which random battles are handled plays a significant part in it they hardly feel random at all the game doesn't jump to a different fight scene in contrast to many other RPGs rather monsters are mge from the surrounding environment and engage in combat with you directly there's a few notable features that favor enhance each battle with the face being the pixie system throughout the game you can recruit up to 50 well-hidden Pixies and these are divided into five different types each used for different parts of the screen that enemies approach run and if you select and use the correct pixie fast enough before the encounter kicks off then you can deal a respectable amount of damage to all the enemies on screen of course you've also got several types of attacks and spells to take advantage of and over the course of the adventure you'll be leveling up and further Hing your skills for some fantastic boss fights and challenges that come your way if you're fond of the series or just the genre in general then there's plenty here for you to enjoy with some grossen combat system Lush visuals and styish soundtrack shining holy Ark is definitely worth playing linol liver story put you into the role of ke who is working towards becoming a new Guardian for the forest she calls her home after it's invaded by the evil forces that is stopping at nothing to bring the world to its knees she sets up with a like-minded companion to counter the threat and ultimately restore order to the kingdom when it comes to gameplay it takes the form of an action RPG and sees you and your partner taking on an enormous amount of different enemies and visiting dungeons as you clear them up one by one as you will guess you've got many different abilities to get the job done you've got melee and range attacks that come in the form of swinging your sword to throwing your companion that gives you a way to deal with enemies from a distance you've also got magic and it's here where the gameplay comes to life your ability to carry out each of the four spells you're given is beholden to the amount of successful melee hits you've landed so you won't be able to Simply cheese your way through it each spell corresponds with an element ranging from Rapid Fire water bubbles to a defensive wind-based Shield which all have a role to play throughout the game the careful use of each is nonon essential especially during some of the more impressive boss fights that make up the experience and just like many other RPGs you'll also be leveling up and improving your chances of success as you progress this aspect though is mainly reserved for the several weapons you can find and then you can increase their speed power or range to your liking depending on how many seeds you've acquired that can be found throughout the world when it comes to action RPGs on the Sega Saturn link liver story is for sure one game that you won't want to miss especially if you're fond of similar experiences like the early Zelda games there's no shortage of awesome 3D fighters on the Saturn with the likes of V to a Fighter 2 fighting vipers and last Bronx there was plenty of choice when it came to choosing a new fighting game to jump into but Fighters megax was the icing on the cake and brought together the worlds of virtual fighter and fighting vipers as well as many of sega's different franchises into one huge release that's often considered to be the best fighting game on the system there's 22 characters to try out as well as an extra 10 hidden away to be unlocked that all come with unique move sets as well as pros and cons the combat system utilizes am two's original Three button layouts one button for blocking one for punching and one for kicking of course there's additional depth when you use the special move sets that each character has which include a mix of button pushes and movements now there's two different fighting styles and the method is applied in a more Technical and tactical manner with the virtual of fight eruption where it's combined with a range of actions inspired by martial arts and failing a move carries severe consequences the fighting vipers mode on the other hand employs more arcadey techniques with the cast of characters is relying on impulsive button mashing Combos and flashy moves to win fights as a fan of both virtu fighter and fighting vipers this game was a dream come true and with all of the extra unlockable content that comes along with it Fighters megax will put a smile on any Sega Fan's face dark savior is an isometric action adventure that puts you into the role of gion a fous bounty hunter who's joined by his only companion a talking bird named Jack upon transporting a notorious ious criminal aboard a ship Bound for a distant Island the captive escapes and begins to wreak havoc on board before swimming to the island on his own this sees you begin your adventure in the hopes of capturing the criminal and finally bringing him to Justice now the first thing you'll likely notice about the game is no doubt the visuals which sport some of the greatest Sprites you'll see on the Saturn they blend in nicely with the background which work together to create a vibrant and unique world that's ripe for exploring and conquering but no matter how good it looks gameplay is what helps dark savior stand amongst the other action adventure games on the system mainly due to its huge emphasis upon platforming and its wholly different take on combat the platforming includes many puzzles you'll have to figure out in order to advance throughout the world with many of them asking you to manipulate the environment in order to reveal switches or filling gaps to areas which are closed off but this is only half of the fun as dark savior has got a trick up its sleeve when it comes to combat there are many NPCs who will challenge you throughout the world and upon accepting you're plunged into what is seemingly an entirely different game that takes the form of a fighter and requires you to lay down specific directions and button presses to execute attacks on top of this upon defeating your enemy you get the chance to add them to your team and use them in future fights each character's unique skills all come into play throughout the game so building a diverse team is vital to completing it with its comical story and interesting gameplay mechanics dark savior is just as enjoyable today as it was when it first released burning Rangers was one of the final games to be released for the console here in the west and it really shows is it not only proof that the Saturn was more than capable of going head-to-head with the PS1 especially when it came to 3D games but that Sega still had plenty of unique ideas when it came to designing new experiences built around the concept of firefighting burning Rangers is set well into the future and sees an armor clack group taken up the responsibility of fighting the city's Flames As A Firefighter you've got three basic tools you have your fire suppression gun a jetpack and a navigator that prepare you for any situation that might present itself the suppression gun can be used in one of two ways by tapping the fire button you can send out short bursts that quell the flame slowly which results in them turning into crystals that can be used to power your Shield secondly you can charge the button which releases a huge shot and can be used to extinguish even the most persistent of fires but destroys all of the crystals in the process your main objective in the game is to put out these fires but also rescue victims and if you fail to do so the Flames will continue to churn and ultimately become out of control where all hell breaks loose visually this is where burning ranges really comes into its own and for a game all built around the concept of fire it mely demonstrates this with multiple transparent Sprites that give off colored light and gives life to each and every bright explosion around you the character models themselves are high poly and each have distinguishing characteristics that are easy to make out as you zip around each level which are absolutely huge and full of secret areas to explore if there was one game that needs the Remake treatment from the Saturn era then burning Rangers is it if you ever owned a Saturn or at least paid attention to its library of games you've no doubt already heard of paner Dragon Saga it was essentially the console swans song and perhaps the greatest game to ever release on the system that took the already successful series and turned it into an RPG whilst keeping its shooter Roots intact it tells the story of edge a mercenary hired by the Empire to guard a mining site and after uncovering what appears to be a mysterious girl kept in stasis Edge and his companions betrayed and attacked by the Empire's black Fleet which sees Edge vowing to take his revenge and setting the adventure off although it is a traditional RPG in many ways there are a few things that really set PDS apart from the crowd and make it a unique well-refined experience exploration is done in a full 3d environment whether you're on foot or soaring through the air on your dragon with combat soon becoming one of the most engaging aspects of the game in battle you slowly charge up three meters that can be devoted towards actions such as attacking using a wide variety of spells accessing items or switching equipment and stats your basic attack comes in two forms a single Target gun that can be upgraded with items you obtain throughout the game and a homing laser that hits multiple targets which serves as Your Dragon's iconic attack which gets stronger as you level up by completing battles efficiently and avoiding damage you are rewarded with a better rank at the end that correlates to more experience points and money which can both be used to increase your Proficiency in the world now visually the 3D Graphics something that Saturn was Notorious for having difficulty rendering where a graphical feat the transparencies the water effects the detailed textures the far Horizon the character models they all surpassed anything off of graphically at the time if you're looking to play a piece of History then paner Dragon Saga is well worth tracking down
