from Tiger Woods several blunders to the infamous Lexi rule here are the biggest rule controversies in golf let me start off with one of the biggest LPGA controversies of course it's about Julie Inkster at the 2010 Safeway classic what happened was that a fan watching the tournament on TV caught her using a dut mechanism I know it may sound harmless but it's actually a violation of rule 143 in the US golf association's rule book obviously the incident was immediately reported and this minor mistake resulted in her disqualification from the tournament turns out she was just three Strokes off the lead and could have become the oldest winner in LPGA tour history at the age of 50 this was shocking right well hang tight because later that year Dustin Johnson also landed himself in hot water and the whole unfortunate predicament happened at the 2010 PGA Championship actually he had hit his approach shot to the bar4 18th at the whistling straight unfortunately it went left to the green and he failed to get up and down in this way he ended up in a three-way playoff alongside Martin CER and Bubba Watson but even after consultation with the officials it was determined that he had grounded his Club in a bunker on his second shot obviously it resulted in his disqualification from the tournament what's more the match was at the Straits course which has a lot of sand traps so he couldn't really figure out the he was actually in a bunker as so many people were blocking his view anyways this mistake cost him a chance at his first major win and of course I can't really talk about the biggest golf rules controversies without mentioning the next player yep it's none other than Tiger Woods in 2013 during the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship his ball landed in a scrubby plan to the sand and he asked his playing competitor Martin CER to confirm if it was plugged now CER agreed and woods took what he believed was a free drop so he decided to chip out onto the Fairway and made a bogey but this turned into a huge controversy what happened was that Alistair Tate of golf weight questioned whether tiger was entitled to relief from an embedded ball in the sand at first the officials helped the drop well the real trouble for Woods came after the matter was consulted with another referee this resulted in him getting a two-stroke penalty and even missing the cut hold on I'm not done with him yet that's because Woods was caught in another controversy during the same year at the BMW Championship this time he was penalized for moving sticks near his ball causing it to move slightly and all hell broke loose when a PGA Tour entertainment employee filmed tiger in the woods it was clear that his ball had moved ever so slightly obviously the evidence was damning enough to be used against him no wonder the PGA Tour rules official slapped him with a one-stroke penalty under rules 182 but that's not all he was given another stroke after he failed to replace the ball properly interestingly wood still disagrees with a penalty to this day just like Tiger Woods I can't talk about rules controversies without an appearance of the next golfer in fact he might take the prize for the most controversial rule scenarios in golf I'm talking about Patrick Reed and his recent rule controversy at the Farmers Insurance open in 2021 it goes like this so he had hit a shot into thick rough and just assumed that it was embedded no wonder he went for a free drop but here's the catch instead of calling the rules official he picked up the ball himself to check if it had been embedded sure the officials confirmed it later well the whole ordeal had already been captured on camera which showed that the ball was bouncing before coming to rest clearly this raised questions about whether it could have truly been embedded I mean he technically followed the rules still he received criticism from players and media for not letting rules officials make the call to be honest that's a justifiable objection after all he had a history of controversial rules incidents well the incident didn't affect him a bit as he won the championship still this was strange proceeding even for Patrick now let me tell you about another bizarre incident it involves golfer Nelly Corda at the 2021 saulheim Cup in a match between the US and Europe she was up against melene sagstrom and Nana Madson but it ended up in a tie through 12 holes and on the 13th she almost made an eagle putt that would put her team one up sure her ball came to rest on the edge of the top but it didn't fall in unexpectedly sagr picked it up and threw it back to Corda she was probably thinking that Nelly had conceded the birdie putt which would have resulted in another half clearly cter was disappointed at this in fact she dropped to her knees and disbelief hold on the incident didn't end here because now the rules officials were called on the side of the green and it was determined that saxum hadn't waited long enough for quarter's ball to fall into the cup so n Eagle butt was considered made this resulted in the Americans going one up of course sagstrom was very upset with the decision as were many European fans who thought the ruling was unfair despite everything that went down she and the European team managed to come out on top they were able to defeat the highly skilled American Squad 1513 to win their second solheim cup in a row luckily things cooled down a bit here unfortunately it only got worse for Phil mikkelson at the 2018 US Open so during the third round of the tournament at shinicok Hills he found himself facing an ultr slick 13th green and instead of playing it safe he decided to take a risk and give his ball a little love tap with his putter well the only problem was that his ball was still moving when he hit it now that's a big no no according to the rules as a player isn't allowed to hit the ball while it's still rolling obviously his risky move didn't go unnoticed by the officials who slapped him with a two-stroke penalty for breaking the rules but here's the thing a lot of people think that he should have been disqualified altogether after all breaking a rule like that is a pretty big deal in the world of golf now the list would be incomplete without mentioning the infamous Lexi rule it all went down during the final round of the Ana inspiration tournament in 2017 that's when LPGA star Lexi Thompson found out she was being hit with a four-shot penalty okay so the reason was that she had replaced her ball in the wrong spot during the third round just imagine losing a two-stroke lead because of something you did the day before crazy right but that's what happened to Lexi turns out a viewer watching on TV noticed that she had replaced her ball an inch away from the original position this made the officials review the tape when sure enough they hit her with a two-shot penalty for putting a ball in the wrong spot and then another two shot penalty for signing an incorrect scorecard although she lost her lead due to this she still managed to tie so Yan Ryu and force a playoff unfortunately she lost on her first hole and the rest is history the whole situation was so controversial that the rule had to be changed shortly after and now it's infamously referred to as the Lexi rule that's all about the biggest rule controversies in golf
