GMK vs PBT Keycaps! I Want A REFUND!

[Music] what's up it's bt here and i was really excited to make this video because i think this marks a new era in keycaps with the release of this cherry taro pbt keycap set now this just isn't a clone or a copycat but it's an actual pbt set run by the original maker of gmk taro p wade 3. i think this is great because it allows keycap makers the ability to get their art out faster and on the flip side we the customers don't have to wait three years for that gmk set to drop so really got me thinking about the quality differences that we would see between the original gmk set and this new pbt keycap set do we really need to wait three years for a keycap set that we might not even want by then let's talk about it let's start with the pricing on the pbt it's way better than gmk the cherry taro set will set you back 95 and you'll get some of the original novelties in the kit as well and on top of that you'll get some of the arrow keys from the action kit from the original gmk set now when i purchased the gmk taro round 2 the base kit was 110 the novelties were an extra 45 and then the accent kit was another 45 dollars coming out to a whopping 229 and 49 cents after tax oof now why you don't get some of the color space bars that you will get with the gmk accent set you do get some of the accents like the arrow keys like i said and it'll save you roughly around 105 total go on the pbt route that's just crazy it would be awesome though to see them add some more kits or colored space bars to the pbt tarot in the future in this set you'll get 177 keys here so you'll be able to fill out any keyboard of your choice this is important because there are very few ppt sets that come with enough keycaps to fill out different sizes of keyboards from like a 40 with like a split space bar to a full-size keyboard with all those extra keys that we never use and of course these were in stock and they were for a while but they recently sold out but they are on track already to be restocked in a few months instead of a few years like gmk a lot of people are opting to wait for extras but man those are expensive at 185 200 for a base kit alone so this way it makes pbt way more enticing so let's talk about the packaging now gmk switched over to that potato tray and every time i've got them they've been a mess they've been everywhere key caps everywhere on the side of the box in this package though to my surprise they're actually better than the boxing trade that the taro pbt ones came in the end of the day though both of these won't amount to the original gmk trays sadly those are goated one thing i was excited to do was to compare the colors of the gmk to the pbt i wanted to see if these new keycaps could capture the magic of the original gmk set now normally the benefit of abs over pvt is that they can produce brighter colors than pbt and i'm happy to report though that these look spot on with the original both the light and dark purple the yellows look really really similar you'd have to stare at them for a while to really see the difference it looks slightly darker than the original to my eye the teal again looks very vibrant in most pictures i can't even tell the difference when people are posting gmk or taro anymore and that's a good place to be novel keys if you're watching this i want a refund for my gmk taro set this is way too close to the original but in a good way overall the taro pbt really impressed me with everything from the arrow keys to the boba accidents to the main colors of the keyboard set one thing i do want to mention is that abs does have styrene in it hence the s at the end so styrene gives it a naturally shinier look before you even touch the keycaps whereas pbt has more of a dry look so that's something to consider but you can only really see it when the light hits the keycaps the right way now let's talk about the legends one of the main selling points of gmk sets is just how clean their legends are the legends are a bit thicker on the pbt version of the taro and to me they look slightly less clear i wouldn't complain if i didn't actually see them next to the original gmk set these are daisub pbt keycaps not double shot ppt double shot is known to be a little bit cleaner than dye sub legends which kind of explains that not so clean look here while they aren't perfect you really have to look to see some minor imperfections of the legends again i don't think that the price of warrants going up to that gmk price anymore now the pbt is usually a bit rougher and more resistant to shine versus abs gmk abs is denser and higher quality than the stuff that you see on like a razer black widow it's not even close the taro pbt texture is quite smooth compared to a lot of the pbt keycap sets out there you can tell that they are really trying to mimic the feel of gmk here it's smooth to the touch only when you're typing can you really feel that slight difference in roughness this is awesome because not only will you get that nice smooth texture but you also get the added shine resistance over the gmk abs now although gmk does do a better job than most abs awarding off shine they do get shine after extended use some people like that worn and used look don't shoot the messenger but there are some people now one thing i noticed was that the pbt versions are a little loose on my switches none have popped off but they don't give that gorilla grip that gmk has on the switches with gmk sometimes it feels like i'm going to break off my stim wait actually that has happened to me next i was curious about how pbt would sound versus the gmk abs i personally love the sound gmk makes that's a huge part of why i get them they sound deeper to me while pbt keycaps are usually louder and thockier so what i did is two sound tests well four in total comparing gmk versus the pbt sound both on a tactile board using some penguin tactile switches and both on a linear board using some marshmallow switches enough talking i know what you came here for let's drop it so could you guys tell the difference between the two i can tell you a slight difference between the two the gmk keycaps sound a little bit deeper sounding and the pbt keycaps are a little louder like i originally anticipated now typing on the gmk keycaps felt a little more poppier and heavier while the pbt keycaps felt lighter and crispier is it enough of a difference to warrant a two-year wait not a chance the pbt sounds good especially for the asking price so in conclusion it will be interesting to see if more keycap creators inventors go this pbt route it will throw it off those pesky clones and get sets out to the consumers faster there are some sets i do feel like will look better on gmk like mito laser because that neon pink red on pbt that might look a little dull but i'm willing to be proven wrong at this point especially if they are coming at the quality that these pbt taro ones came in and for sure for sure if they can get it to us within a few months instead of a few years that's in a certain amount of time to wait for some plastic it is and the price is just way more affordable as well i think i mentioned that a few times already yeah hopefully we see this trend continue this year the only downside i really see for some is that more availability means less exclusivity and some people love that about this hobby i don't really care personally if somebody has the same set as me in fact as a reviewer as somebody that shows off a lot of stuff i would love for you guys to create the same looks that i'm creating so i love this idea i'd love to know what your thoughts are on this topic though for 95 this just hits that nice sweet spot for most people and is more justifiable than that 185 to 200 for the gmk sets i think we're in a new era of keycaps and it'll be interesting to see how the rest of this year goes wherever this leads i'm down for the ride i it's been your boy bt
