Back on the Scottish mainland today we start out in Ullapool and drive down the West Coast of Scotland to Applecross. So starting from Ullapool we drive along Loch Broom and then to Dundonnell and Badcaul on Little Loch Broom, over to Gruinard and the beautiful pink beaches there, then through Gairloch over to Torridon through the beautiful Glen Torridon and then from Sheildaig we take the beautifully scenic coastal route to Applecross. And after a comfortable night's sleep at the Harbour House Hotel followed by a delicious Highland breakfast on this slightly overcast day we prepare to set out from Ullapool down to our first stop which is Dundonnell on Little Loch Broom. And the first stop of today is here at Dundonnell looking out over Little Loch Broom not to be confused with Loch Broom which is to the north so a quick stop here and then we'll be on our way. And a quick stop here above the town of Badcaul which is from the Gaelic meaning the hazel clump and in the distance you can see Beinn Ghobhlach which is also Gaelic meaning Forked Mountain. A quick walk on the beach here at our next stop which is Gruinard Beach and this beach is well known for its pink sand here at Gruinard Bay and you can see over in the distance there is Gruinard Island. Just a quick look at our location here, we're at Gruinard Beach which you can see there and Gruinard Island is about half a mile off the coast. And what we didn't know until we got back and started to research this video is that Gruinard Island is actually the infamous Anthrax Island where Anthrax research was done in World War 2! Finally cleaned up in 1987. Well Gruinard is quite safe today the island was finally cleaned up in the 80s and it's perfectly safe now for humans to go visit. And I just want to say that this video is coming in at about twice the length of our previous videos in this series and that's because this coastline drive all the way down from Ullapool to Applecross was just so incredibly scenic that I just couldn't bear to cut it and so we end up with a video that's a little longer so hopefully you'll enjoy the little longer video format as we drive now from Gruinard down to our next stop which is at Gairloch. Stopping here in Gairloch at the Mountain Coffee Company for a brew and a cake that is this big at your face and very good it was too! So we're driving now from Gairloch over to Glenn Torridon, we're gonna drive through Glenn Torridon up to the Loch Torridon overlook. And it's a little rainy right now, a little overcast, still very beautiful and I've said this before but they do say that Scotland looks its finest when the weather's at its worst and I can totally buy into that. So come with us now as we drive over to Glen Torridon. A quick stop here at the Loch Torridon overlook and pretty good views over there to Beinn Alligin which is the mountain on the other side of the loch. Hitting the road now to Sheildaig which is our next stop and the next town to the south. Stopping here in the picture-perfect town of Sheildaig this is on Loch Torridon and I believe, and there is the Island of Torridon over in the distance. (Actually Sheildaig Island) And so now we're gonna hit the road from Sheildaig to our final destination today which is Applecross and this route is not the quickest route but it is the most scenic or so so we've been led to believe and it's quite a sort of winding road it's a singletrack road down the coast route so looking forward to that let's see what we have in store. Wow! That was quite the amazing drive! Stunning. So here we are an Applecross and there is a shop in Applecross and so, yeah and there the signs, so we're gonna follow those signs pick up a few supplies before we head up to the campsite which is just at the top of the hill here. So hopefully the shop isn't too far and it looks like we're in the town now so hopefully pretty close to the shop. Let's see. And we are running the video back at 2x speed here as it seems like maybe the shops a little further than we thought ... hmm ... Well it kind of looks like we've run out of town here but we'll keep going ... Milltown, seems like we're actually out of Applecross now did we pass this shop? I don't think so let's keep going ... Maybe it's in this block ... no doesn't seem like it ... wow it looks like we're really heading into ... it looks like the middle of nowhere here, it's very beautiful though look at that sunset ... okay Well I'm pretty sure we didn't pass the shop yet ... Erm ... Keep going a little further. I mean this is the only shop in the town as far as we know and it seems like it's little ways out of town actually ... what's this OK it says shop ... Well we sped up to 3x now because indeed it does seem like the shop is further a lot further than we thought ... okay ... Yeah we just need to pick up a few supply ... oh look at this Camusteel ... so that's the second town that we've passed through so I guess the Applecross shop is not really in Applecross ... oh well ... okay here it is ... pretty sure ... "shop open" ... Alright, let's see ... And Elsbeth's just gonna run inside real quick hopefully get a few supplies for dinner tonight. No? Oh. I guess not! Well we looked into this when we got back we were totally out of luck in October the shop opens for four days each week for about three or four hours in the morning only. So there was no way we were ever gonna find the shop open tonight it's about 5:00 p.m. Let's hyperlapse back now to the Applecross campsite, hopefully we can find our camp and get situated pretty quickly and then find somewhere in town for dinner tonight. OK here we are at the Applecross campsite. It's a very short distance just above the loch front where we were before. This looks like a perfect spot overlooking the loch. Hopefully there's no wind tonight ... A short walk down to the Applecross Inn and a very delicious dinner. 🎶 If you enjoyed the video you can help us out by giving us a like, and if you want to see more of my videos, you can click the subscribe button, and don't forget to click the bell icon so that you're notified when we release a new video!
