NC500 How To Drive The Applecross Pass

[Music] so we're just about to get on it mozzie the famous rod supposably the most notorious scary road to drive on in the whole of Britain it's called the B lachna bar I've been on it I think three maybe four times before most people cross pass yeah basically get you to Apple cross they do say motorhomes are a bit big to go on it but I've heard many stories of people going on it up too and I've heard of motorhomes at eight and a half meters long on this and we're only seven and a half meters so I'm pretty sure we're gonna be all right so I'm gonna make me wear there now and we're gonna film quite a bit of it there is a video on youtube of a 7.5 liter motor home doing it you know like a sped up all the way music so if you want to see someone actually doing the whole thing in a water or otherwise watching that it gives you a good idea when it came to the air pin bends ended after sometimes reverse to get round doing this any tips yeah I can't really give you any tips until I've done it in a more term I've never done in the motto would you recommend doing it would you do it tonight hi I've done it in the dark I did do it in the Dark One's yes and what you will find when we're up there for some really good viewing points but most of the time it's too cloudy to see anything you actually open the cloud expect it to be very foggy and misty up there let's get on with this we cannot see the sign there is like a warning telling you telling certain people that shouldn't come on this road and it's just covered in stickers you can't see it the first thing I will say is it is a belief October the 11th or 12 12 12 just to give you an idea of the conditions the time of year it is a Saturday and it is 12 so I was a bit and they've worried about coming up on a Saturday I thought it might be quite busy I have quite a few cars coming so we'll see anyway so far we haven't seen anybody on the road [Music] the entire length of this ballot on the bar I keep saying that wrong sorry it's a lot in the bar the entire length is 11 miles and Google Maps says it's going to take 35 minutes a five mile round trip no 11 miles is 11 miles it says to Apple cross so they say it's really dangerous road is it one of the most dangerous roads it's supposedly the most dangerous road in Britain oh right Oh God like he does sir don't attempt this in winter because it is probably impossible Charlie can get past here well it's not winter yet look Allah but the here we are his first care is first passing place when you stop at a passing place always indicate to let them know that you have stopped I wanted this bit silly people who tried listen I see I'll be honest with you I've tried any nice wintry come they use the stupid well when I did it in the dark warm so it was snowing I believe oh my god I believe I can I'm not 100% sure but I seem to remember it was sleet or something like that I'll be honest apart from the road we narrow it seems okay so far well it is okay so far it's a good a good work we've only just got on it yeah but I was expecting the worse is it gonna get worse it is gonna get a lot worse yes now some people in a longer mods for Mike our friend Bob Earnshaw and a couple of others have said the warm attempt this in their mods Bob's now there's I dunno our 8 and a half meters I think maybe a little bit bigger it's fine the walk the don't want to attempt it because you have a big overhanging bits at the back of your mortar harm and the scared that's it you know it might scrape on the floor which is fair enough you know it's respectful of us your decision it might just happen but I do know people in one ones have have tried and said they've had no problems whatsoever what I would sir is in a 7 half meter should be fine as long as your vehicle's pretty new if you've got dodgy bricks or a dodgy clutch I wouldn't attempt this excited it in a car and the bricks and coach word fantastic and I really felt like I was going to break down by the end of it getting a bit higher now Mauser I know I'm feeling [Music] oh gosh I can see the record really high right up there guys look at the view down there those Pew and only single track broads keep checking your mirrors as well because if there's anyone behind you these passing places out just for traffic coming the other way cows which are faster than you we want to get past so pull up in the passing places indicate so that the nor that you've stopped and let them go fast because this is used a lot by people in classic cars and motorcycles they like to do this rod spin they have a challenge for them - paper yz1 there so the simple answer is why don't they just make them operate wider able to well we've just been speaking about this with the knife cost 500 is becoming so popular and all the locals are starting to complain we're right we saw that the road system just is not suitable for so many mortar horns and travelers coming up here so I've just been saying I do think in the next like five ten years they are going to have to start thinking about getting rid of these single track rods if they want the people to come up here and spend the money you know after cancer for them because it's not fair on the people coming here and it's certainly not fair on the locals just clogging up all the roads cyclists Wow can you imagine doing this on a bike I'd be fun I could actually imagine this being an absolute nightmare though the traffic and summer on there oh yes definitely I don't think I'd like to attend thanks guys have a good time so there's a cow behind me now so I'll be stopping to the next passing place and the other thing they say about this rule is always check always keep looking into the distance for things for me because passing places am always very close by now that's the difference you see between someone who's been on this road before and knows what they're doing and someone driving a Ferrari who hasn't got a clue he was I just pulled over so that I could come fast and he pretty much stopped behind me he didn't know that he doesn't know how to use the roads doctor stopped at the passing place he's an indica and went them nor oh my god this is well dodgy now I feel like I just just don't fake each year with you well I certainly wasn't planning on making us fall off this edge mother [Music] beautiful I'm going to pull in a X well there is there was a Karen where he's gone now I just want to have a quick look at this view is beautiful amazing whew so I guess I think we've been driving eight minutes or something oh it's just wonderful very windy sort of the passing purse is just am thinking off for a mortal woman a car really when they wanted to stop and go a bit of beautiful it's a bit embarrassing really there is well because they must be looking at us speak in let me read the morning knowing think of the Vishnu preserving this it's up to them you know I have looked into this a seven and Athleta Mataram can do this if I feel careful of doing this then I'll do it there's no sign saying you can you I'm not allowed to do this in a big multiple some to the individual while we'll see about that guy just back there he pulled into the passing place on the opposite side of the road that's one thing you're not meant to do what kind of drop down there must carry the road seems to be getting a little bit skinnier now I'll tell you something this tuning boxes stills making this struggle yeah because we're going up quite an incline we are you friggin quite we can't be tell on the video I don't imagine I'm having to go down to second gear quite often which I wouldn't normally after with this tuning box as long as we're getting open I'm not bothered yeah what I was trying to say is cows coming the other way sometimes because they don't know the road would pull in here so that I could go past and they shouldn't be doing that you should always just stay on their side of the road the fluids all rules of a passing place [Music] right I believe this might be the first hairpin Bend [Music] and there's a car parked there which is not good for us at all - cat so it looks like a bottleneck idiots so the road guys is literally going round idiots thank you [Music] but name is embarrassing for them not for us they did sort of you know hold back what we need so we go around that hairpin no problem I do believe is much tighter ones than that there's another one coming up here go at me with a car coming down [Music] okay how we're going to do oh yeah with he's pulling in his name ago up [Music] see Bubba and shock you watching this get yourself on the road know the problem with bulbs it's not it's not the length he knows he can probably get it round the karmas it's just as scared of script in the bottom at the back well we've got the same travel time yeah but there's it's longer than ours theirs is I think it might be eight point seven five meters there's this is actually really exciting isn't it it's something you have to do yeah do the NSA 500 I think this is the highlights the way to do it certainly the highlights of the trip I'm actually feeling like the adrenaline running through me is quite exciting so we've got six point eight miles to go twenty minutes it says so we're not even half will yeah oh wait no but I do have a feeling that is the worst part of it I'm not sure having said that we do have to go back down again on the other side I was just gonna ask Ashley as we go into climbing up do we then go down because we're going to end up in applecross which is at sea level now there is a viewing point coming up in fact there's two I believe one called the pass and one called the B look nevah viewpoint which I believe is the very top yep so I think we will stop this is the first I'm not going to stop at that one I think this time you know this is the Balaton of our viewpoint so there's a few people here few people will just stop here for a second see if we get a good view for you it looks like Mars don't you think yeah faster look so we're at the top of the be luck in a bar now just give you a quick view it's beautiful in it got quite excited then because it looked like there was a three mast up there I know I thought we're gonna get internet but we're doing a few more a bike Kazuya from Yorkshire are you from Yorkshire Lancashire Lancastrians Lancastrians would not talk to them people traveling from all over Britain you see to come up here very popular for bikers and classic car drivers going up here one thing you've gotta fear is this little point which we can't really see it's very warm now but it tells you how many miles and where each of the mountains are on here you can name them all you can see them all in the distance you can't on this camera but Sir there trust me trust me so away we go or five more miles to go 18 minutes so that's half of the video really tests the power of your your vehicle have you got the power to get up and now all the way down you testing the bricks so the secret is not to go too fast keeping a log ear and to cheer breakers as often is that a word on often as rarely as you can it's just so hard not to keep you fought on the brick all the way down and that's when you start here in the brick the brick pads the rig disks by the time you get to the bottom should be alright in this because it's quite a new vehicle not had any trouble with the bricks and it's just passed it's a mortise another hairpin coming up I'm not quite a hairpin Boyce this one actually looks very tight it doesn't give you much room and just spread your wings if you like okay no problem at all if that is all the worst hair pins out of the way I would said they're very very easy in a seven and a half metre multiple as long as you've not got traffic coming the other way early so I can see a white car in the distance there is a long way off yeah it's a long way off I'm gonna but the thing is you see you stop it's a passing place he sees you as well he stops her passing person sometimes he's around the corner waiting for you when you are wearing for him but this one's okay we can see each other again and he's done Mack you see that's what you're not meant to do I think what he's doing now realizing how fickle is bigger than he is so he's actually being quite loud he's being very polite but he should stop there on my side of the road and indicate to let me know that I stopping that you should never stop in a passing place on the opposite side of the road because when there is a lot of traffic on the road to that cell to get clogged up lizard is a method to the madness there is an awful lot of cracks and bumps in the road you'd think for such a dangerous road that really keep on top of it and a freshly word tarmac all the time so if you can see that water in the distance outdoor thing you probably count on that camera but I think that's where we're heading for I think that's where applecross is down in the dip down how are you finding it mother really exciting and I'm gonna be honest it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be so yeah I think I'd want to do it at nighttime or in the snow the weather's actually very good today I thought it was gonna be torrential rain from what I was reading and when we woke up the clouds were on the the clouds were sat on top of the hill so far up here the cloud they would all be cloudy it seems like he's struggling he it's a foreign care I think he was from Holland a young couple seems as if he was having a good time now what are these two going to do well we are I just didn't really want to go onto the gravel there maybe a laugh talk yes some of these passing places still a bit too narrow for a mall to form and the cow so if you can imagine if a motorhomes come in the other way you would be in a pickup I have actually been on this road and there's been worries on here they have to don't have to do they could go the long way around but I don't know I suppose if it's like a maintenance vehicle like a you know Laurie for repairing the roads they have to use it yeah can cause a big problem now be left in a bar actually means I think it means something like the pass of the cattle and it was so the cattle could come along here to Apple cross if you wandering what the Gaelic is what it means I don't even know if I'm saying it correctly to be honest with you be laughs in a bar that's my guess please correct me if I'm wrong these are wide they really know some much narrower ones coming up at the very peak just as you get to the top of Scotland so we're adding into applecross there's no more chat on full cross to be honest there is a bit of a car park which always seems to be full older is there really I think there's a be straw to get something to eat there's an inn where you can get something to drink where we might go later on it's up to you was it it's so this where we're planning on parking tonight or hoping to park I think it's the 20 25 minute walk to the bar to the end so it's up to you whether we go up and there's really nothing else there apart from a campsite I was anything there you also have a petrol station because apparently the next petrol to get petrol would be 37 miles away yes oh if you guys are doing this stuck up you can't get in yourself into a pickle company discovered we can when we filled up with petrol just before we started the NC 500 but one bit of advice is don't if you look on a map and put in petrol station on Google Maps it shows Lords along the North Course 500 don't take that for gospel because I've heard during winter months a lot of them are short so don't rely on them being open same with shops although I would say you've probably got more petrol stations than shops on the NC 500 we're a member of Brits tops as well and there's no britain stops whatsoever on this right up to John O'Groats now so pretty much half of the NC 500 there's no Brit stops yeah we'll be wild camping and care faxes that's our only option so we're dropping down now in fact Maz if you look over there that is where we're parking no applecross is down in this direction that white out there I think is the Heritage Center which we might be going and it might be offered but we're back and pretty much opposite that hopefully but it is a very popular place to park and it is Saturday so whether it's gonna it's gonna be real bad or not afterwards and see so we're almost at the bottom now just half of a male especially one point eight miles to where we're stopping just at the bottom of this road now there are deer a lot of people report deer around that or cross a herd of deer and I remember in my car and they just I have to stop Macau so that would literally walk straight past me so that few isn't as pretty as it was well it's not it's not as pretty as it wasn't there but this is where the the view actually gets good the best views of the NC 500 are on the Westport and we're just starting the West Course should be for spectacular views over the next week or two tonight is the campsite [Music] it's not too bad and when I was talking about the fuse I was just trying to get out really is that when you do get the chance of up with a few point in the top oh yeah you've got to get our yeah it's beautiful so that is the end of the Apple cross wow that is Apple cross just over there I think we'd have to walk mother would after walk it's a very narrow slot small car park and I wouldn't feel very comfortable I guess it is forward are you enjoying that how did you feel about driving that that was a lot easier than a fast I remember to be on yeah that was easier than when added in the mismo of Citroen c3 because this has a much better engine and its new work it was easy I really enjoyed that so I hope some people who were planning on coming on it some people who were nervous about coming on it I've taken a bit of reassurance from this in the seven and a half meter water for out of season or don't have any qualms about giving it's easy maybe in summer I'd think twice if the roads are gonna be busy if you eight metres in longer I might consider not bothering that's up to you so that was the be like 'no bar the applecross pass we hope that in you know we hope you found that informative enjoyable and then we hope it
