Glass Sculptures That Can Take Years To Make

[Music] these are glass sculptures made by cold glass artisan Jack storms he is known as just one of three standout cold glass craftsmen unlike traditional glass artisans who use flame and heat to make glass malleable allowing them to molded to a desired shape Jack does not use heat he cuts polishes and laminates until the glass pieces shone like mirrors this sculpture process is incredibly intense and physically challenging so much so that in the entire world there are only a handful of fine glass artisans working in this medium to help shake the glass free sculptures Jack invented his own cold working class lathe it all starts with that colored cube glass core working with blocks of lead crystal he cuts them several times grinding and polishing each slice then with the precision of a surgeon he inserts slivers of colored dichroic glass between them at every stage pausing to glue and cure them before repeating the process the end result glass core emits a kaleidoscope of colors which looks like the glass equivalent of a Rubik's Cube this core is then encased in sculpted optic crystal he then hand sculpts the final piece to the desired shape on a cold pressed lathe the optical crystal helps with refracting the light passing through the sculpture and creating a hypnotic light show of colors the end product is usually a geometric shape such as a cube pyramid wedge a round Bowl or an egg I was told it can take up to 18 weeks to create these amazing designs and in some cases years for the larger more specialized pieces the smaller sculptures sell for around three thousand US dollars and the larger pieces can sell upwards of a hundred thousand US dollars jack is a true pioneer in the cold glass world and his award-winning work is sought by collectors around the world two of his sculptures even made it into the movie guardians of the galaxy in the brokers store located on Sandow and the store was shown twice in the movie one with Peter quill and the other with yondu what I find most inspiring about Jack is he lost his sight in his right eye after being slammed in the face by a piece that flew off the lathe the accident put him out of commission for almost a year when he finally got back to work he had to relearn sculpting with one eye Jack says his studio and there has to be much cleaner and more organized or he could trip and fall Jack's inspiration and intense work ethic derive from his heart and mind and filtered to his creative hands that transform a simple block of glass into a masterpiece Jack said every art piece that goes through my fingers is the most beautiful one I've ever made and if it isn't I work on it until the dealers anyway that's the end of this video thanks for watching and we'll see you next time bye-bye [Music]
