Giving my friend's mountain bike a tuneup!

Alexander is in town so is his bike I went on a ride with him the other day oh man was his bike in bad condition I smacked this thing hard oh man so I'm headed to where he's staying I'm gonna grab his bike and we're gonna give it a burn Peak tuna [Music] drop tests can tell you more about your bike than you know I'm impressed I didn't hear many rattling sounds which makes sense Alex knows how to work on a bike and I was dumbfounded to find out that the suspension was serviced recently and so a lot of things wrong with this bike happened very recently let's make some notes foreign that's slower than I would like so we'll make a note of that Booth grips have seen their better days probably do a grip replacement we could honestly get away with not replacing the tires but Alex is going to be here for a while and he was out west this is for loose terrain we're gonna switch out the tires for North Carolina riding rear brake is mushy front brake is okay I don't know I guess we'll service the brakes Alex said he's got a problem up here with his chain ring I mean it needs to be replaced this chain ring is bad it's no longer rubbing on this but you can see it tore up this why is he no longer rubbing you did an alignment on it yeah on the line man so we're gonna give the entire drive train and inspection replace the cable clean everything up yeah we got to dig in pretty deep here all right let's pull the wheels off this bike and get it out to the wash station [Music] I love getting the crappy stuff out of the way first he's got cushcore in there which makes it kind of a pain it's basically this foam ring that goes around the rim and inside the tire and prevents the rim from being damaged if you hit a rock really hard also changes the entire ride characteristic of the bike some people like them some people don't but they certainly make changing tires interesting I've seen a lot of Stans boogers this one goes on my list it might even go on my shelf foreign I guess there's no better time than now to mount the tires [Music] her inserts wrap around the entire rim and cover it if you were to use a normal valve stem you wouldn't be able to get sealant into the rim and so you have to use these special valve stems that have holes in the side so they can squirt outwards this way because the end is blocked see they leave this little channel here so that sealant can get out and into the tire foreign [Music] there was some kind of a study done and I'm not sure the exact results but I think they said in adult male now has the same grip strength that a toddler did in 1983. [Music] all right now we can actually work on a bike we're gonna go to the thing that's the most messed up that chain ring we're gonna replace it with this one and I'm gonna go two teeth smaller to just help Alex out a little bit because I know he doesn't like climbing does it come off like that that probably could have used a little more grease I love cranks that have the puller built in as you loosen this it actually pulls the arm off the bike and now you can see here three filthy bolts holding it on [Music] so as you can see the new chain ring is slightly smaller than the old one that's going to bring the bikes gearing down just a little bit it'll go slower but it'll be easier to Pedal honestly it's not going to make that big of a difference overall but on a long climb when you're digging deep it's kind of nice while we have this all apart why are we changing out the chainring in the first place it's because Alex 50 50 did a fallen tree and so bash ring and this one's 3D printed it's from the last products video Alex can long term test it for us it's bolted on brake pads and Brake bleed tells all my spray and Brake bleed blocks ah so when you squeeze the brake handle it's actually pushing these pistons in and out and as the pads wear the Pistons have to go further and further and so when you bleed brakes the Pistons have to be in the right position this is the perfect spacing right here [Music] pray I Never Bleed your breaks because if I do we get dot five all over your bike man if only I had a box with like a hundred nitrile gloves in it all right let's put this rear wheel in so we can start testing stuff nice let's check the shift thing you know it is working surprisingly well just needs some lube so we will just oil this chain up wow that sounds 14 times as good so if you're replacing brake pads you don't have any special tools you can leave the old pads in and stick a screwdriver between them to gently move the Pistons back out and then you can put your new pads in and that should work [Music] first came in the dropper post was kind of sticking let's see if that's still the case or if it's self-healed it's self-healed it is remarkable how many things will fix themselves when you clean your bike cleaning your bike is not just a vanity thing everything being crusty it's bad for your bike it actually affects its performance but because we did clean the dropper post very thoroughly I'm going to lube it and cycle it a few times just for good measure and we can put some of these on the stanchions up front this is almost too easy what's left here ah grips [Music] all right I think we can get to the fun stuff now first of all this salmon colored fazari pretty cool bike I really like how the shock is tucked way up under the top tube and there's space for two bottle cages that's just awesome Alex really loves this bike and he doesn't ride it with a backpack on he's like me it's we're never Packers and so we're gonna put this bottle cage on his bike showed it in another video made by lasign there are two co2s on the bottle cage of course it can hold a water bottle then inside here we have a multi-tool a tire inflator and inside the multi-tool there's actually a tubeless repair kit so you pull this off here we have an applicator and then we have plugs right in there I'm sure we could even fit some quick links in there can't even fit my thingy driver in there so let's see okay yeah what happens if we put this here that looks like it doesn't fit at all that's Alexander's problem and so I have a feeling Alex has like one of those little 600 milliliter bottles and I don't have one so let's just trust that that is the case and that's it she's ready for the trail brake bleed new pads tires difficulty did we actually do anything to this bike besides clean it and change the tires [Music] thank you super cold out nine o'clock in the morning I got Alexander's bike here and we got a special guest there he is how you doing man hello oh look at this oh dude you put this on yeah so you have everything yo thank you fresh rubber man I wasn't expecting that it looks fresh bro now the brakes I'm gonna have to get used to the brakes because the contact point is so immediate so I'm gonna have to be a little bit careful not to eject myself this is so neat the water dripping behind it nature uh is lit is lit that's
