Ginger Rogers Performs "They Can’t Take That Away From Me" | Carson Tonight Show

foreign [Music] Every Time I Think of Ginger Rogers I always immediately picture Ginger Rogers with Fred Astaire although she's made many pictures where she didn't dance and she's probably one of the reasons why the word glamor was used in Hollywood she's most talented lady and on February 11th she's starting on tour and she'll be at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto in February 27th and 28th he'll be in Ottawa at the Waldorf Astoria in March in New York in the Fairmont in San Francisco the Desert Inn in Las Vegas in June would you welcome Miss Ginger Rogers [Applause] [Music] if I could really dance I would give up and give you a twirl around the floor oh no way no way no I hurt myself I hurt myself John that was the light thank you I enjoyed it very much I hope Fred was watching I hope Fred wasn't watching he probably was very sick right now I think last time we saw you I think you were on the it was the Emmy show you presented yes no you yeah you introduced me as a matter of fact on that on that show I never got to see you yes I haven't seen you since then I don't think except maybe in a car driving by Techo is that handsome man I do that occasionally driving around it's nice to have you with us thank you it's very nice to be here too John it must have been a lot of fun although I I when they did the tribute to Fred once he mentioned and people forget because he made it and you look and all the people he danced with made it look so effortless that everybody thought they could get up and and do that and it was in over and over again and do you know many times we I'm sure Fred is toes to you so you're probably hearing it for the second time but uh when when we do uh make a mistake and uh we'd probably be in take 12 at the time and uh we'd make a mistake do the whole dance and then we do we make one mistake we do it over from the beginning and then later of course later after musicals were uh after we finished making musicals they did find other ways to to dissolve technically to be able to solve them pick it up but they have to go back and repeat we did I think one dance in one film at 58 59 times um I think it was swing wolves yes 58 takes something like that yes and you know I know I never minded because I loved that happened to be my favorite one and I never minded because I love that that music you know the uh and it was fun to dance with that I I think it's really one of the prettiest ones we had some somebody they got a few uh oh goodness pictures here oh you've seen that that's from I did not look like that a moment ago you have to have Top Hat you have to have white tie and Tails really to do that now is that from the one you were talking about no that's from uh that's from is it swing time you can do the music before you give up I have to think swing to me yes yes yeah yeah yes that's from oxy Hots yo yes Roxy green it made a musical comedy in New York by the name of Roxy eyelashes there there's no there's another one with Fredo right yeah that was done with the uh Irene uh Vernon and Irene Castle The Story of Vernon Irene yes this next one is the picture we did called uh the Gershwin show yes dancing on roller skates dancing on roller skates and we did you say either and I say either you say neither and I say neither remember that yeah I sure do it's a good song I sure do when people ask you about certain films and say when was that made does it bother you that you say well like that that might date me you know no I don't think that because I just don't remember dates the best date I remember I really 1492 is the best state I can remember Columbus discovered America five years ago yeah that's true win it General close enough so what do you say when people are unsureless enough to say how old are you what do I saying people you know you shouldn't ask people that anyway it's relative it's all I want to ask you are you asking me that question are you asking me that question John no I say what do you say what do I say oh I say oh I say oh I will when people say I say well uh you know I love you but it's none of your business that's a very good answer I do love you I mean I do love whoever says it because I love people and I say I love you but it's really none of your business yeah you know for years they made women put down their age on driver's license and finally somebody said okay enough of that already just put down over 21 and let it go because women do not like to tell men I guess eight men don't either they don't like really to sell it's like when I got to be 36 you know and I said yeah you know yeah yeah are you you telling you're telling your age I'm going through my second for the third or fourth time it's fun every time something when I want to tell you something you you want to say you tell her I tell how old I am well I don't mind I'm 50 years old you are yeah job six days older than you know why why because the book I read that I love very much called the Bible it says God created his Creation in six days so no one could be more than six days older than the other person hmm okay while we're mulling that over and the trickiest answer if I've ever hide stay where you are [Applause] we're back we're talking with uh Miss Ginger Rogers Pat Boone Lawrence and bean will join us and Chris Sarandon let me ask you something you've been asked this before and I'm wondering if your answer is going to be similar to other gals who found themselves in the same position and I think it was Raquel Welch said one night about I asked her about dating or something and when you wear those days and the Glamorous days of Hollywood everybody says oh you must have millions of guys you know after you and Raquel Welch said it was a funny thing she found herself sitting a lot because people were reluctant thinking oh she's too busy she's out with so and so I think that's true and a lot of the pretty ladies the glamor girls never were called that's very true because they're already occupied you've got you know you don't want to go out with them they they start negating their invitation before they even invite you so I think that's very true and I I was I was not you know they weren't standing lining up at the door with their top hats and their their canes and their gloves no no very self-assured guy to call Ginger Rogers up and ask her for a day wouldn't it I mean how many guys thank you Pat yeah it makes you feel insecure right away because you can't stand the rejection I can't stand the rejection and you figure wow she's busy why she will not go out yeah but it takes we have the same problem when you're a man it's true I'm sure you do I'm sure I'm sure you do I'm sure you did I don't do we were the parties glamorous in those days were they really do they have orchids floating in the swimming pool they had the most gorgeous parties truly wonderful parties uh well Freddie saw some of them because I know Freddie de Cordova I've known him since he was a pup and uh that's right yeah six days I've known six days my mother told me oh Fred I saw I found a picture of Fred the other day somebody sent me and I haven't brought it in because I'm having it framed and he was attending an opening some years ago with a uh somebody who shall go nameless and I'm having it framed for him and if he didn't look like oh I want to tell you it was a very cute you're very cute boy yes he was well he went out with my cousin yeah my cousin fought out with everybody that's your cousin he was active active man but they were glamorous they were beautiful days they really were but these days are wonderful too you know Taco Bell to go yeah that's not a big party it's a different scent of values I think today I don't think perhaps the values are quite as as acceptable as they have been in the past but uh I think it's uh it's progress now what is was this a publicity thing somebody told me or what maybe came out of your you know you never know what to believe what the studio puts out you sleep Outdoors or you used to sleep Outdoors or you always sleep Outdoors no Johnny I used to I had a house up on off of Coldwater Canyon and the house had up above the house was a pool and a tennis court and Elan and I had a bed put on that lawn with a very nice uh square like a cake box made of of screen over the top of it and I every night would climb into that and sleep outdoors I slept seven or eight months a year of the year out there yeah people don't do that anymore and you know you you're FL your skin feels so good in the morning it's so cool and marvelous it's really very good I loved it because I love fresh air I'm a fresh air fiend would you have Dew on you it sort of I had a plastic thing that I covered myself with if it came the rain came yeah many times and sleeps on doors occasionally but not uh that's right yeah don't let me say that about it well we're gonna take a break you're gonna do a number for US aren't you with our Orchestra yes okay we'll take a brief information we'll be right back stay where you are [Music] look before you leave and I know you have a very early rehearsal tomorrow yes you're gonna do something with our our family I would love very much too Orchestra is yours [Music] thank you [Music] this happens to be my very favorite most people say what song among all of the 80 or more sort of standards that you've been associated with directly in your musical experience is your favorite so it was a difficult job but I made a choice and this is it thank you the way you wear your hat [Music]
