Gibson Les Paul Comparison | Humbucker vs P90 vs Mini Humbucker

people are always asking me rick why do you have all these less balls i actually have one more but it's in the shop right now well one of the reasons is that they have different pickups on them actually that's the main reason so this for example has mission paf's humbuckers this guitar this is a 56 reissue has p90s right and this is a 1973 les paul deluxe which has mini humbuckers do they really sound that different well we're going to find out today next i'm going to go over the gear that we're using the amplifiers the speaker cabinet microphones and preamps i always do that in these videos because i think it's important for you to know what the signal chain is but if you don't like it and you want me to just get to the examples i can do that too you can leave this in the comments the cabinet we're using for this is a 1971 marshall cabinet it's a slant has 25 watt green backs in it so it's 100 watt cabinet i know it looks brand new it's been retol lex that's why uh i'm using a sure sm57 on this speaker and a sennheiser 421 on this speaker let's check out the mic press we're gonna use the mic freeze we're using are bae 1032s they are neve 1073 style preamps with no eq we're using two different amplifiers for today for a clean sound is the high wack custom 50 and for the distorted sound and evh 5150 mark iii for the video i had my friend rhett shell who you see on here many times he actually hasn't been in a video in a while so i called him up i said come on over play some guitar we're going to start out with this black les paul standard with mission pdfs like i said going through a custom 50. i'm just going to do a picking pattern it's going to be totally clean on the bridge pickup so play the same thing with the rhythm pickup next i have my 56 reissue with p90s on the lead pickup here we go same thing at rhythm pickup next i'm going to play the 73 deluxe with the mini humbuckers play the same thing lead pickup first rhythm pick up next okay so i've got the black les paul with the mission pas going into the 5150 and we're on the middle channel right [Music] [Music] so and now the neck pickup all right now the gold top p90s into the evh middle channel starting with the bridge [Applause] and neck pickup and now the uh 73 deluxe with mini humbuckers starting on the bridge [Music] [Music] another neck [Music] les paul de luxes i think mini humbuckers are some of the most like undersung pickups of all time they're really really good and they do something different than a paf and a p90 that's definitely its own thing i love p90 guitars uh they're different i tend to use mahogany p90 guitars like my les paul special or my sg no obviously these are mahogany with a maple cap so it's a different sound but love p90 sounds once again i'll save my judgment i think until i put it in the video of playing the three uh the gold top was my favorite uh p90s are my favorite pickups um all three were great but to me this this strikes a nice balance between the two that was almost single coil it was almost like a telly to me playing it in the room whereas the the pafs were standard humbuckers we all know and love so fun fact about the gold top um the solo that dave gilmore played from another brick in the wall that everyone thinks is a strat so gilmore played a gold top on that not a strat everyone thinks it's a strat neck pickup but to me that's what's great about the p90s and interestingly pafs like this are very very similar to p90s when seth lover was designing the paf in late 56 to 57 they started with the p90 construction and basically made a double coil version of it very simply put but yeah so they share a lot of the same pedigree but for me p90s are the ones okay next i've put the picking parts back to back you'll hear one phrase of the humbucker one of the p90 one of the mini humbucker and then we'll do the same thing with the rhythm pickup and go through those sounds next we're going to listen to rhett's parts we're going to switch after each phrase from pick up to pick up and see if you notice the differences [Music] so [Music] um [Music] [Applause] that's all for now don't forget to subscribe if you're a first time viewer ring the bell that'll let you know when i go live and when a new video comes out give it a thumbs up leave a comment that's very important if you're interested in the biato book go to my website at www.rickbeater.com follow me on instagram at rickbeat01 check out the new beatto ear training program at beautiertraining.com and if you want to support the channel even more think about becoming a member of the beatto club thanks for watching [Music] you
