if the samurai's head were to be suddenly cut off he should still be able to perform one more action with certainty what the [ __ ] is that supposed to mean [Music] so [Music] so [Music] ghost dog way of the samurai released in 1999 and was directed by jim germain ghost dog has always been one of those movies i've always heard about but never actually took serious enough to watch first we're taker pretending to be a samurai didn't exactly intrigue me until i found out that his character reads from the hagakure and he lives by its codes every day when one's body and mind are at peace one should meditate upon being ripped apart by arrows rifles spears and swords yamamoto sunatomo's hunger curates probably one of my most favorite books and it's one that i could just take random passages from and just apply to life so what's pretty cool about this movie is it shows actual passages from the book and it does this throughout the film and it's really up to us to figure out how it relates to what's going on in the story if one what is saying a word what the condition of being a samurai is its basis lies first in seriously devoting one's body and soul to his master so the movie follows ghost dog and he's a hitman for the mob what do you want you want my rolex whatever the [ __ ] [Music] he lives his life in a shack on a rooftop next to a pigeon loft and he lives life following a strict samurai code he sees himself as the retainer of louis who's a local mobster who once saved his life one day he's given the job of killing a senior mobster who was sleeping with the boss's daughter he completes the job but he's seen by the boss's daughter and she leaves her alive afterwards the mobsters decide that ghost dog must be killed before they're implicated in the murder of a made man now gulstog knows it's kill or be killed more importantly though as a retainer he wants to save his master louie i'm your retainer so this is definitely a different kind of movie it feels a bit like an indie film and it has this sort of different feel to it that i've never really seen before it's almost got a bit of a surreal david lynch feel to it where the characters are a bit strange and they have that type of lynchy and dark humor it's kind of hard to tell if you're supposed to take everything serious or not did you say he contacts you to a [ __ ] bird did i just hear you say that what particular species a bird i do think that first with taker does do a really great job at portraying ghost dog he's a stoic character that we never really find out that much about and that's what makes him more interesting besides the fact that he's a contract killer that lives by the way of the samurai and has done 12 perfect kills for the mob but what makes it more interesting is the fact that he's also compassionate we see him make friends with a little girl whom he shares books with probably books you shouldn't be reading but that's all right we see him make friends with pigeons there's also an ice cream man that speaks french whom he doesn't really know what he's saying but he's still friends with him anyway but above all else he looks and feels at peace even with all the chaos and violence around him it all just makes him feel as if he really is a modern day samurai but as for whether or not this is a samurai film i'd say it's in the spirit of one it's basically showing how samurai ideals can still be applied to modern society our bodies are given life from the midst of nothingness existing where there is nothing is the meaning of the phrase form is emptiness that all things are provided for by nothingness it's the meaning of the phrase emptiness is form one should not think that these are two separate things also the music is great and it's no surprise that the rizza from the bhutan clan was involved in this movie he did the music and he even makes an appearance as a samurai this film is basically everything that the wu-tang clan likes it has the eastern philosophies it has the kung fu chumbara gangsters and of course hip-hop even though it has all those things it still remains a rather calm and quiet film it means like the rappers you know the rappers they all got names like that snoop doggy dog ice cube q-tip method man my favorite was always flavor flav from public enemy he got a funky fresh fly flavor live lyrics in the bank of reality i kick the flash dope and moving technicality to a dope jack i love that i don't know anything about that so as for flaws and this isn't really a big one but all the characters that aren't the ice cream man the little girl or ghost dog or straight up stereotypical villains that could be him right there should i shoot him nah that ain't him fargo said it was a black guy remember so what's this guy so what are you puerto rican i think he's some sort of an engine or something yo what the hell are you the mafia guys act like very strong stereotypes of italian mobsters [Applause] forget about it sometimes it's funny other times it's a bit much jesus it's the [ __ ] first man though we'll say i did get kind of a kick out of the mobster that sings and dances to hip-hop in the privacy of his home [Music] but besides that the others are just angry italian mafia guys there's also redneck characters that act just how you would imagine they would act in a movie like this they will just come across as being very one-dimensional and stereotypical you know there ain't all that many colored people around here neither this is definitely a love letter to both gangster and samurai chambora films as an added bonus they even have the pipe kill that was taken from the hong kong movie the killer so you get a bit of a mixture of chinese japanese and gangster so overall this is a film i'm saying not to overlook it isn't as goofy as a concept as it looks or sounds deep down there's many layers to this film it's main message is about depicting changing times the mobsters are all old and just reduced to looking more like a comedy show than the fearsome gangsters that they probably used to be throughout the film will show them watching classic cartoons while the younger boss's daughter watches itchy and scratchy from the simpsons but it also wants to say that some things that are old are still useful in my own society so check it out if you get the chance it's definitely a hidden gem type film it might not blow your mind but it will make you appreciate having watched it anyway thanks for watching and if you want to support the channel you can join my patreon in the description
