talking about it but let's take a look at some of the good Celtics offense from last night you've got to play as only you can or can we talk about the the bad Dallas Mavericks defense okay that set it up just put the play up cuz I just want to show the world what I'm talking about first off I'm using an acronym okay CJ we've been talking about this three minutes left to go in the fourth quarter I have WTF at home you know what that stands for I do not understand defensively why the scheme is to switch everything right now why let's let the play develop okay so here we go you're going to see the play start off you're going to see a little screen here by Al Horford screen coming here and you're going to see these two players one two why are you switching why wouldn't you just talk about the likes a PJ Washington fight over this screen cuz you know there's going to be a rescreen to this moment here okay doesn't do it switch now you have Derek liely guarding Jason Tatum you're going to see another screen CJ same thing here that's should just they're going do you obviously know what's going to happen now these two are going to switch as the play happens now you have Derek Lively in a situation where you have a young player right a rookie on the perimeter as a big guarding the likes of a guard as the ball gets rotated to the side I know why he always does that the ball gets rotated to his side now you're going to see Drew holid drive towards the Baseline as he drives towards the Baseline yeah Kyrie's going to come here and now you're going to have my man right here Derek Lively in no man's land cuz in no man's land now as a big you have to guard two perimeter players you have to make a decision you have to hedge which one you going to H as he comes to the Baseline are you drifting towards the baseline or you saying in between the two CJ bigs don't have the experience of making those type of decisions on the perimeter am I correct no you're correct and I think you got to credit Drew holiday here because he makes a hell of a play he drives Baseline Baseline Baseline Drive Baseline drift right Kyrie trapped the Box he's supposed to do do that he does his job Derrick Lively splits two on the backside standard defense you split two generally speaking he does do a good job of taking away the corner three right because we know the percentage is Corner versus R three but you you have the first pass out he drops a little bit too far towards the Baseline Drew makes a no look pass and he manipulates this guy with with his eyes he looks to the corner throws the left hand dime on the money and that's I mean that's why Drew holiday has made $300 million in his career and why he has two championships the pass by JH is phenomenal with the left hand but also for DK lley I know you're taking away the corner three but still like there should be a little bit of a hedge right a guard would give you a little bit of one of these to try to make you force into a decision and he goes into the corner it's like defensive schemes down the stretch I mean that's a critical play so at leads to I know we're going to talk a lot about Luca and bad habits body language complaint to the refs but also defensively scheming wise down the stretch why are you switching one through five well that's an outstanding look by you because most of us including me what we saw on that play was what a pass from True holiday but what you're telling us is that there are defensive mistakes that are being made here or at least a strategy that does not wind up working that sets up the open and I'll give you one other one because look I still think you have Jason kid in his first NBA Finals right like when the Mavs are on a run I don't know why he calls a timeout to stop the run and then while the Boston Celtics are on a run I don't know why Jason kid does not call a timeout to stop their run so there's a lot of there's a huge learning curve for everybody that's in the NBA finals for the first time in a Dallas Mavericks I think it's important to add the Celtics weren't great in their first Finals appearance they had turnovers they had lack of execution down a stretch they weren't six and0 in clutch games there's a growth moment that occurs when you fail and the the Mavericks are going through right now obviously LCA they're talking about his defense they're killing them they're talking about how Kyrie wasn't great in the first two games but they have to go through a growth moment to fail in order to succeed and I think they're going to be better because of it we'll find out one way or another the overwhelming story this morning is Luca donic and his performance last night and if you haven't heard it yet Kendrick Perkins was all over this he was on the road tripping podcast last night and these were his thoughts after game Luca off the game he drained his team emotionally even J kid and it started from the tip the complaining every damn possession down the falling on the floor right not getting back in transition not making a second effort the bull fils that was not a charge why even put yourself in that position he tapped out and he left his team hanging by far the worst performance I've seen for Luca in the playoffs lack of energy lack of leadership emotions weren there he wet the bed at the crib that's it's harsh but it it most whether you whether you agree with the very specific way he put it or not the context of what he's saying is 100% right yeah I think the word that I really love that perk used that I didn't even think of was it was draining like it is it is draining to watch your Superstar someone that's supposed to be your leader constantly complaining constantly frustrated constantly with his hands up in the air it's not fun to work with anybody like that in any field if we all had someone up here standing with us that was constantly complaining about the show we would be drained we wouldn't be able to do our best work and he could not do his best work defensively he was completely checked out for the majority of the game the only time he started trying to play some defense was when the offense got going and they got back into the game then he all of a sudden wanted to be a defensive super superstar the draining that part of it for me really stood out there were so many times where I just caught myself watching Luca and feeling like is he okay like he has to pull it together and he never did well the ey test tells you all you need to know sometimes but we can also add numbers to it Cindy let's put the full screen up on the defense there according to Second Spectrum the Celtics are blowing by Luca donic on drives 67.7% of the time that's the highest Blow by percentage on Drive by a single defender in any playoff series in the last 10 years and as you see the other two worst ones were both Luca this year it was Luca against the Thunder it was Luca against the Clippers and now it's Luca against the Celtics so while we had somewhat praised Wendy his defensive effort a few times along the way in these playoffs he seemed to be giving it a go this obviously has been a reversal to form and last night was really perhaps in in the great career of LCA donic and it is that last night in the NBA may have been for that re for that reason his worst moment yeah one of the reasons why it's happening so much in this series is that the the the Celtics are so strong with the five people they put on the floor there's no place for Luca to hide it is common place for for player for teams to put their weakest defensive player on a an opponent who isn't going to be very involved in the offense it's standard procedure and it and that's worked a lot you know Luca has been a first team all NBA player playing with that strategy he's it's worked for plenty of of victories in the playoffs for the Mavericks over the last three years but this Celtics team there's just no weak spot you know there was one point in the third quarter where they were just getting you know boat rised where Jason kid kind of Desperately went to Zone because they were having so much trouble keeping Luca in front of somebody well you give you know the Celtic Zone it's like putting raw meat in front of a Lian and they you know had two possessions where they threw like nine passes and generated two wide openen threes um and so part of this is not just Lucas failings part of it is the Celtics just being a terrific team but um obviously if the if they're going to get to the mountain top they got to do better uh Luca's got to do better and look when it comes to the complaining with the officials they've tried everything here in Dallas they you know everybody has talked to them there's been different Executives different coaches different teammates I'm sure on this I don't know as much about the SL median national team I keep bringing that up because it's so important to him it's so frames what he does year after year I'm sure they've tried everything there this has got to be something Luca's got to handle and you know I'm sure they're going to come out and defend him today and I'm sure they're going to come out and try to you know put a better foot forward but this honestly this scrutiny that's going under right now privately it wouldn't surprise me if the Mavericks were happy because something has got to give to get this guy to the highest level he's right there just below the mountain top but to get to the Mountaintop he's got to take it on himself in dealing with these failings Wendy that's why I said before this is habits like and and and by the way he's been the greatest at every stage of his career that he's played at right so in order to achieve things you never done before you have to be willing to do things you've never done before and this is the next step for him to get over that hump like those habits around regulating deregulating his emotion and also guys let's be honest about conditioning for the way they want to win with his usage rate with the volume of possessions he plays like your conditioning has to be better combined with how you deregulate and regulate your emotions look at the end of the day what is it what is it you're doing when you're looking at the officials you are blaming someone else for the things that not going well right sometimes and the Really successful people a very smart person once told me the most successful people when things don't go the way you want them to start by asking what did I get wrong and maybe that's what he will do I think it is a a real possibility that when this series is over and he's absorbing all of it if he looks in the mirror and says what part of this was my fault this could to Wendy's Point wind up being a good thing for him heard the two leaders on Boston side do that for Boston when Jason Tatum when we played the sound and he said hey we can work to get a great shot we don't need to settle for three and then he paused and he said myself included and then Jaylen Brown said hey this is time where we graduate that accountability from both of those players is huge for Luca too when you talk about fatigue when you talk about conditioning we also have to take into account that he's hurting right physically we know he's been banged up when you're hurting when you're tired when things aren't going your way that's when you have to be sharper that's when you have to fine-tune that's when every detail matters and he completely lost his attention to detail throughout the game yeah he is getting numbing injections for a thoracic contusion um as this goes on which you know we we we can sort of sluff that off and say well this is what professional athletes do obviously that is going to be a factor in how he's going but at the end of the day in the NBA Finals there's no room for excuses or or or of any kind right you're out there you've got to do everything you can and you cannot give your te team uh the kind of effort that he gave it last night well you know CJ when we talk about conditioning is it's not for speech speee speech you can I do that be know to add ch she on it for [Music] foree e for e [Music] um same foreign foreign spee for e e for [Music]
