Baruch shares his expose Ettore teaching from the Bible dr. Baruch is the senior lecturer at the Sarah Avraham Institute based in Israel although all courses are taught in Hebrew at the Institute dr. Baruch is pleased to share this weekly address in English to find out more about our work in Israel please visit us on the web at love Israel you are G that's one word love Israel Oh our G now here's Baruch with today's lesson usually when someone hears the book of Genesis they think about the pass the book of beginnings as it's known in hebrew called Bereshit as in the beginning but in actuality when we look at the book of Genesis we find much information concerning the last days in other words we can learn a lot about the kingdom of God from this book of Genesis and we see for example last week as we begin our study of Genesis 49 we see that Yaakov he came to speak to his twelve sons and in regard to his proclamation to each of them he says this is what's going to happen to you in the last days ahorita amin so even there we find prophetic insight for understanding the last days now I mention as well that there are two ways to understand this section we can and I believe this is most legitimate look at each individual statement to each son of Yaakov or Jacob and realized that it has specific relevance for that tribe or we can't additionally and it doesn't mean either/or but we can look at it and understand it with both of these application meaning that through these proclamations to these twelve tribes we can learn more about what's going to be in the last days concerning the children of Israel collectively all the tribes together in a general message last week as we studied we completed the first seven sons now when I say first seven sons that's not necessarily according to birth order because what we're going to find is this there are 12 sons we see this early on in the book of Genesis and when we look here at this 49th chapter the first four are mentioned in order the last two are mentioned in order birth order but it's that middle half from five to nine through nine we find that things are are jumbled up and the reason for this is that there's an overwhelming message of what's going to happen to the children of Israel in the last days and throughout their history that we find when we look at this collectively and understand this change in order has significance it's not an error it's not that Yaakov was confused about the order it's because it serves greater revelation and anytime that there's a change from what is normally expected or thought of in the Bible it's not a mistake it's not an error it is where the wisdom the scriptural insight is found so again with that said look with me to this 49th chapter of the book of Genesis we left off with an interesting statement after speaking about the tribe of Dan we find this phrase in verse 18 we read Li Shu Ithaca kaviti Hashem which means for your salvation I have hoped Oh Lord and this tells us what the primary motivation is of this entire passage and that is that we should be hoping and expecting God to move to bring salvation this phrase your salvation means it belongs to you and God simply gives it bestows it upon his people we don't earn it we don't make it we receive it it is an outcome of God's faithfulness to his covenant people with that said let's press on to new material and verse 19 and the eighth son that's mentioned here again not in order of birth but the eighth one that is mentioned is God and God that name means to attack it is a military term and it shouldn't surprise us the next word here is go dude which is the word for a battalion a a military group that's on the attack that sent to wage war so when we look here it says God and then a military brigade a battalion will attack him but he will attack their heel we have mentioned in other parts of our study of the book of Genesis that the word heel is very important Hill it is a kind of it is the same route that the term Yaakov or Jacob comes from and I've mentioned a couple times previously I want to repeat it because it's so important that we have this proper understanding you'll recall that also in the book of Genesis when Tamar the daughter-in-law of of Yaakov she became pregnant and she had two sons twins within her and one started to come out and the Midwife she tied a string upon his wrists but miraculously supernaturally he went back in and the second one burst forth and that name for that second one Peretz means just that to burst forth so he received the birth right and what the birthright comes a blessing because of that we have a rule being given in Judaism and that is you don't award the birthright until in a normal delivery the head comes out first and what's last the feet and what's the last part of the foot the heel so the hill when you see that you award the birthright and therefore the hill became synonymous with victory with achievement so the name Yaakov means he will achieve he will be victorious remember that name Yaakov comes from the fact that he was grasping the hill of Esau and it's Esau who is really the deceiver who lied to his father and forgot or purposely neglected to say I sold my birthright to Esau so in this passage it's speaking about how we're going to see God as one who attacks and he's going to go after victory that's the implication let's move on to verse 20 the next son that's mentioned is Asher and Asher means happiness and we find from Asher is going to be fruitfulness or oil or fatness now the word here is chemin which frequently is translated as oil but here we have the word Shimon ah which has to do with with fatness and here's what happens many people they believe because of this statement and the word chemin although it's in a different form meaning oil that it's talking about petroleum so people have taught and have sought oil in Israel where the allotment of land to Asher is that's not the implication here if you read the entire phrase here it says from Asher is the fatness of his food or richness of his food so Asher is symbolic of rich food or nourishment and those what it says and he will give delicacies of the King meaning he's going to provide royal delicacy he is going to have that which is seen as royal or kingdom like and one of the things that we can derive from that is remember Asher happiness or in a way being blessed and where is that blessing going to see be seen in its fullness in its richness in overflowing well the answer is in royal royal meaning a kingdom experience now we're ready for verse 21 Naftali the next son that is mentioned and we read Naftali I Allah I Allah is like a a female Ram or a mountain goat so it says Naftali is this ram and it's in the feminine which is sent forth and gives Emre Scheffer now this is important because many people are careless with with translation and they'll say a beautiful fawn but there's no way that you can get the word in marae to mean fawn as in a female deer know the word amore means words of and this next word that is used here chef fare well it is the same word that the term shofar comes from and the nuance of that word has to do with improvement a good improvement a a change for the betterment and what it says is that Naftali is going to be release there's a freedom and there's a Liberty and he is going to speak these words of change these words of repair these words of improvement now look at verse 22 verse 22 deals with Yosef or Joseph and in the book of Genesis we know that that Joseph is that that child of significance of the twelve sons of Jacob and we know that he is a typology for the Messiah and this is all very important why the answer is that Joseph is going to be the key in the book of Genesis for understanding the work and the outcome the implications for the work of Messiah and much even though Matthias from the tribe of Judah and much was said in regard to Judah more than most tribes but it's going to be Joseph where most of the text in regard to this the twelve children the one who received the most scripture verses is Joseph so let's look at it we find Ben Porat Ben son I realized that some Bibles will say a vine but it's been son Bharat comes from the same people word for fruit or fruitfulness so when we translate it properly a fruitful son is Joseph a fruitful son allez ein upon thee and the word ein speaks of a well where you draw water from and water is seen as blessing or we know drawing waters from the well of salvation so here again Joseph is going to be fruitful in bringing about blessings and salvation this is his messianic paradigm that we learn from him and then the verse concludes was something unique we read but note sada al a sure now but note is usually daughters or daughters of but that word but note can refer to an outcome a a result and we look here the next word is sada a step now it's not a verb but rather it is a noun for a step normally the word here for for step can be madruga like steps you go up or sada which means making steps walking and what it says is basically there's going to be an outcome from Joseph and it's going to be a step it's going to move it's going to lead to what it says here I'll a shore it's going to go over the wall and this is how the sages see this they see it as responding to and overcoming that Joseph through the fruitfulness of the work of Messiah there's going to be a moving forward and we're going to be overcomers we're going to step over the obstacle and being victorious having defeated the enemy is only a result of the work of Messiah in a person's life we need to remember what the book of Revelation says when it speaks to those seven congregations it talks to each of them about being over comers having victory being the one who overcomes the obstacles of the last days and then you read in verse 23 still spoken about Joseph we read by ma Roku which means and they will be embittered to him and they will strive or fight and they will hate him and who's this ballet could seem we see here the word it seemed is arrows so we're talking about those who possess weapons and not in the singular but in the plural so those who have a power they are going to to wage war against them they're going to reject and being bitter towards him and and hate him but what's gonna happen look at verse 24 but to chef BAE a time now the word to chef means to remain to dwell in and he this is Joseph and the implication is his heritage those that come after him from his tribe but it can also be those that are in Messiah we are going to remain we are going to dwell in a time now Eitan is a common name male name in Hebrew today which means strength so we are going to remain in strength or in power and what's that power well we find the word keshto which is from Keshav which means a bow so it talks about bows and arrow we're gonna have the strength to deliver to deliver the weapons the others may have it but they don't have the means to deliver it and then it says via for zoo which has to be do with being agile it has to do with spreading forth and we read czar or a Yadav so the arms of his hands it's talking about the whole arm both her arm and hands and this word here meaning agile is also a term that has to do with functioning well functioning successful in the Old Testament this word also has to do with leaping when it's applied to legs but here it's being applied to arms because the image here is shooting a bow you don't shoot a bow with your your legs but you do so with your hand and with your arms so Josef's going to have strength to deliver the the weapons and it says here from the hands of a vir Yakov now some will say the word of vir in most english translations that i looked at has to do with strength or power but a veer has to do with like a knight like a knight in medieval times someone up value someone of power someone that goes out to bring victory and defend others that's been commissioned to go out in battle and it's CSS here of virya cough that Yaakov Israel is going to be the one who valiantly goes out for the purpose of defending and we read on from there he will do something wrote a Evan Evan Israel Evan Israel is a term that refers to Messiah so from there he is going to Shepherd and that kind of giving birth that Israel is going to be the one that that brings about Messiah into this world so it's a reference once again to the connection between Joseph and the children of Israel being the ones that Messiah is going to come forth from read on in verse 25 and from the God of your father it says he will help you and Shaddai meaning this this sufficient God he is going to bless you with the blessings of heavens with the blessings of the deep that lies underneath the blessings of the the breast and the womb now how to understand this well oftentimes people think of the blessings of life physical blessings but in order to have those physical blessings of a good life a fruitful life and this is what press and womb has to do with giving a life but a physical life and what it's saying here is that it's the blessings underneath the physical that should be emphasized if we don't have the right foundation if we don't have the spiritual blessings we're not going to have the means to receive the physical blessings so it's emphasizing the spiritual as the foundation for the the the spiritual as the foundation for the physical blessings look now to verse 26 the blessings of your father they are going to to triumph it's word gov rule gov rule comes a word power but it also has to do with overcoming as well triumphant the angel Gavriel or Gabriel it's the might of God and what it says here is that these blessings of your father they are going to be mightier over the blessings of your parents so the blessings of the God of your father meaning the God of Israel are mightier than the blessings whatever your parents can give to you and it says unto the border the border of what we read here the border of the the everlasting hills so these are gonna take us to these everlasting hills if you look at the commentators it's talking about a transition these hills we're going to be taken over to the border of them and beyond which is into the kingdom of God and they're going to be where well these blessings are going to be upon the head of Joseph and then it uses the word in Hebrew whew code code which is what the top of the head and it says here that he is a Nazir a huff joseph has been Nazir is kind of like a monk that kind of separates himself so Joseph is going to separate or distinguish himself from his brothers and this separation this two sanction always points to what the work of Messiah this blessing of Messiah over over all the schemes and the attempts of the enemy so we conclude the last Sun benjamine and Benjamin it's called here Binyamin the EV is a wolf that it's words you throw which means is on prey which is a animalistic term for fighting so Benjamin is a wolf that will fight in the morning and he will eat until what he's going to eat until the evening when he divides the word is yeah Alec he will divide his spoil so he's going to be nurse from that victory all day long and in the end in the evening when it comes time for that major mill he's gonna have left over to divide so it speaks about what being successful now we read on as we continue with verse 29 all these all of these blessings are the tribes of Israel how many twelfth and this is what he spoke to them their father meaning Jacob when he blessed them and a man according to his blessing he bless them so he blessed each one of them but I would argue that verse 28 gives us this this information a biblical justification for not just seeing these as it concludes with every man according to the blessing he blessed them not as individual only but we can also see them collectively generally speaking about the children of Israel having relationship to the last days now what I did was I wrote down a couple things when we look at the normal order we find Reuven shamone or simeon levy Yehuda Donn Naftali God Asher Issachar Zebulun Yosef and Binyamin but when we look when we look at the the scripture here we find that change in order for that that middle six where we have grooving shamone Levy and Judah in the normal order then we have Zebulon who is number five here but he's really the tenth one who was born yes aha after him but he's the ninth one but here he's number six then we have Dan god Asher Naphtali and then conclude with the normal order of Joseph and binya me now when we look at these these twelve sons and we look at their names Reuven for example shamone levy yahoo - all the normal ones when we go back earlier into Genesis 29 and verse 30 we have the significance of their names based upon that that time what was going on but when we look in this we have a different different message given to each of these names and it's interesting when we do that and looked at this collectively we find Reuven what did were we told about Reuven he's not going to remain that shamone and Levy they're going to be scattered but Judah he's going to gather up Zebulon is going to be expanded yes a heart is going to labor heart Dan is going to give an inappropriate judgment meaning he's not going to understand what is right but God is going to bring about what there's going to be victory and through the next son Asher he is going to minister even unto Kings and Naphtali is going to be set free and he is going to do so in a way that that brings about an improvement and then Joseph is going to be blessed and Benjamin is going to devour up and be able to to the distribute these blessings so when we look at this collectively what can we learn from it well Israel is not going to remain what's happened to Israel in the same way that Reuben was disobedient we find Israel's not going to remain in the land but they're going to go into exile the next thing we're told is that they're going to be scattered abroad but broad but they're going to be what Judah they're going to be gathered up and God is going to cause them in the last days to expand meaning they are going to expand the borders they are gonna work hard but what's gonna happen their judgment what they're teaching is not going to be factual and that's what we can see about Judaism today they're expanding they're back in the land but they're not giving truth but in the end God's going to bring about victory remember God God is going to be victorious and Israel's going to minister Minister our royal blessing and we find here that Naftali he is going to speak he is going to be set free and he is going to speak these words of improvement this has to do with the Apostles so to speak these words of improvement these words that are going to be brain about repair and that's going to lead to Yosef that is blessing being blessed and in the end Israel's going to be victorious and they are going to divide their spoils with others so when we look at what said to these these twelve sons we find a message for Israel that goes through Israel's history and brings about what Israel's going to do in the last days which Israel is going to find victory they are going to minister Minister even to Kings they are going to be set free in order to speak words of improvement they're going to find blessing and what are they going to do they're going to distribute those blessings to Nations what Israel always supposed to do now let's conclude chapter 49 look if you would to verse 29 it says here and he commanded them that is Jacob he commanded them and he said to them I am going to be gathered up unto my people he's speaking about death I am going to be gathered up to my people and when this happens he says you bury me with my father's in the cave which is in the field of Ephron the Hittite now it's very specific here because we know about that earlier on in the book of Genesis what Avraham purchase and that's what it says look at verse 30 in the cave which is in the field of Machpelah Machpelah has to do with EE and we think about Avraham and Sarah they're buried there and Yitzhak and Rivka they're buried there and Jacob and Leah these pairs and that's what Michaela speaks off so it's very specific Yaakov is saying I'm going to die be gathered up with my father's and I want to be buried where in this tomb of the patriarchs where is that well we'll read more specifically look again in the cave which is in the field of Machpelah which is before mom or a mom ray the plains of Mamre excuse me is near have roan in the plains of Mamre in the land of Canaan which Avraham purchased he purchased this field from Ephron the Hittite as a burial allotment as a the word here is an estate for burial look down to verse 31 and there they buried Avraham and Sarah his wife and there they buried Yitzhak and rifka his wife and there they buried leia and we find look at verse 32 in the purchase of the land and the cave which is in it from the sons of het and Jacob he finished commanding his sons and he gathered up his feet to his bed so after he said these things he raised up put his feet in his bed meaning he laid down and he died he expired and he was gathered up to his people so this concludes chapter 49 with the death of Yaakov and what did he do before he died he gave prophetic truth about each one of his sons and what was going to happen to that tribe what would characterize them in the last days and we looked at why we should also see this it's not just an individual message to these twelve sons in the last days the tribes the people would come from their loins but also we need to in addition look at it as a message to Klaus rel in general for the Jewish people in the last days and what God's going to do in bringing about a fulfillment of his call upon the Jewish people well I'll close with that until next week when we begin that final chapter of the book of Genesis chapter 50 until that time
