hi everyone and welcome to diana's craft table i hope that everything is going super duper in your world we're having wonderful weather this week in the rocky mountains it's in the 70s all week so that's lovely this episode today is on jelly printing on fabric i want to give a warm welcome to our returning subscribers and for my newest subscribers welcome welcome to the craft table let me just go over a few things for the newbies that are here i consider myself a mixed media artist however there's a lot of other different things that i like to do lately i've taken up on my sewing machine once again many years ago in my former life i used to quilt i quilted a lot i put that away and now i'm revisiting the uh my sewing machine not the quilting world i'm not quilting however i am getting reacquainted with the sewing machine and i'm teaching myself how to sew with the help of some fabulous youtubers out there i was thinking the other day how can i marry my my love of jelly printing which i absolutely love to do with sewing and found out that you can jelly print on fabric so that's what i've been experimenting with i do want to make some items and i want to be able to make my um items unique by just printing my own fabric up so one of the first things i did was i did some experimentation and i was looking at marbling so yes there are videos out there on how to marble and i'll show you that later in the in this video but i started out on paper because i just you know you're just experimenting just trying to find your way so these are some of the prints that i came up with with just marbling on paper i happen to like bright colors i try to go you know a little dark but even though i do have some dark pieces i i can't stay away from bright colors so i was successful on paper but you know sometimes when you do something on paper it doesn't translate to fabric but that's part of the fun of experimenting and another example of something that i just did on this small um i think this is about an eight by eight here you can see the marbling effect that i was able to get here which i like here's another sample and then these you will see in the video shortly how i got the um how i got the marbling on here so here we go we've got some purple and greens and yellows in here here's a sample of stenciling i've got at least i bet you on this piece i've got at least five layers of paint on here and you'll notice this is still you know it's not stiff it's it's still nice and fluid i guess is the word i want to use but i did some stenciling on here so even if you come up with a color scheme or a pattern that you don't really care for don't throw that piece of fabric away try stenciling or even stamping on top of it now this is stamping i've stamped on top of it and let me show you something that i do once in a while i try out different things i'll go ahead and try something out on the edge in this case i was using a stamp where in theory in my mind it was going to work but when i put it to practice it didn't turn out so well so instead of stamping right away like in the middle of the fabric i decided to stamp out on the edges because when i go to cut this a lot of the times i'm going to cut that out or it'll get caught up in the seam so you won't see it anyway okay i'm starting off with my 12 by 12 gel press jelly plate i already have some 12 inch squares already cut out these this material is from my quilting days so it's been pre-washed so i'm ready to print i'm going to start off with this product which is gap 900 it is a golden product i'm just going to put a little bit on the plate you don't need a lot a little goes a very long way another thing that i found out that this gak 900 does is that it keeps the acrylic paint a little bit um i'm sorry keeps it fluid longer so it doesn't start drying out on the plate before i'm ready to use i'm just gonna put a little bit i'm just going to mix it up a little bit here on the plate spread my color out i think i'm going to put a little bit more color on this plate there we go do i want to give this fabric time to pick up that that acrylic paint soak up that paint all right i would like next time when i put paint on the plate i'm gonna put a little bit more this is still fine this is still gonna work the way i want it to so no problem here i'm gonna set this aside and let it dry do to marble the fabric i cut pieces of kitchen twine and this you can get from the dollar tree the length of the pieces is up to you what you want to do is separate the fibers you know if you're not sure how to put your colors together or maybe even what marbled paper should look like google that and then look at the images pay attention to the colors that they're using what goes well together and also the design of the marbling and that'll help you in laying out those fibers on that jelly plate do now here you'll notice that i don't clean my jelly plate neither do i take those fibers off i'm just going to apply my paint right over everything now this was just a spur of the moment decision just to see what would happen so don't be afraid to experiment the stencil that i'm using is called splashes and i bought that from top flight stamps and you'll notice that i will be moving the stencil around so that i don't get a repeating pattern do so here i decided to use one of my stamps and i find it better if i just brush the paint onto the stamp and then stamp down well everyone i had a lot of fun bringing this tutorial to you today and i hope this inspires you to try out this technique if this is something you wanted to do you will see some of this fabric showcased in some upcoming sewing projects and until then i will see you right here next time at diana's craft table
