Garage Door Keypad Not Working? Here Is An Easy Fix

hi and welcome to another video by get it done home repairs today we're going to talk about a problem with the garage door keypad outside the house if you come up to the garage door keypad and you press the buttons on there and your garage door doesn't open you're going to wonder if you have a problem or not i want to just show you a very simple thing you need to check before you go ahead and replace the keypad outside if you can if you can open up your garage door from your normal keypad or your button in the garage first thing you want to check outside is you want to go when you want to check your battery to make sure your battery is okay batteries do not last forever they're only most of the time a nine volt battery in there and you may get a year two years maybe a little bit longer depending on how often you use the the opener in this particular case we use the opener frequently so we are going to check it just to make sure now this door here does not work at all from the remote on the outside so let's get out there let's take it apart and let's find out what the problem is i have a feeling the battery is going to be the issue because when you press the keypad and it's dark outside it does not illuminate which tells me two things one the battery is no good or dead or possible the unit itself is no good all right so first thing we're going to do let's check that battery and let's make sure that we have no other problem so let's go outside let's take a look at it now the first thing you're going to notice is that this is a older this is an older unit here it's not really like the the newer ones but there's no reason why it shouldn't work anyway so first thing we're going to do is let's take out that screw it's a phillips head screw let's remove it and let's open up this cover and see what's going on inside you want to make sure you use the correct size screwdriver because you don't want to damage the screw so you won't be able to remove it we just unscrew this screw let's take it out and let's put this some place where we're not going to lose it next thing we'll do is we'll come in here with a small screwdriver such as this pry down on it like that pull this out okay the next thing we're going to do is we're going to take a look on the date on the battery and as you can see this battery here it's a couple of years old this is a 2018 battery and now this is 2022 so this battery is pretty old so let's take this out let's see what's going on with it and we'll we'll see what's happening okay i'm going to bring it in i'm going to show you what the problem is let me just take this off and i'll show you real quick yeah that's the problem where are you see this electrode is snapped right off and it's stuck inside this piece right here so let's grab a pair of pliers let's pull that piece out right there and we'll grab our new battery and put the new battery in you can also tell if a battery is bad because you can look at the battery here and you can see it's expanded or swollen same thing up on top right here it's expanded slightly as well so we know that the battery here is definitely going to be the culprit let's grab a pair of pliers let's pull that out and finish it off okay we're going to hold it really carefully because we don't want to damage the wiring so let's grab it here we're going to grab the end of the piece here tight to come out but we're going to get it out of there without damaging anything else so just going to pry it off slightly grab our pliers now and we'll take it off and this is the piece that actually broke off the battery all right let's grab my new battery and let's put it in okay here's a new battery now obviously you're going to connect it up positive to positive and negative to negative there's only one way it can go in so you can't make a mistake okay now before we do anything we're going to press the buttons i don't know if you can see that but now you can see that illuminates perfectly alright so let's put our code in and let's see if the garage door opens or closes the way it's supposed to and there it goes works perfectly all right let's go reverse it and put it back up okay and then of course when you're finished you just take your cover push it back up push it in place grab a phillips head screw and screw it in just like that okay and then your cover goes back on the top slide it down and that's it so as you can see sometimes you you may have a problem with the clicker itself or the keypad itself but don't overlook such an easy problem as the battery going dead as i said before if you touch the keypad and the lights fail to illuminate it's a pretty good possibility that your battery is no good oh wow listen i don't know if you can hear this the battery is shaking around inside so this battery has been dead for a long time i'm sure that that hasn't been changed in many many years now just because it says 2016 doesn't mean it was put in in 2000 i'm sorry 2018 just because it says 2018 doesn't mean it was put in 2018 most of the time most of the time a battery when you buy it it has years on that battery so this battery could have
