all right let's talk about Warhammer there is a huge a fundamental problem that has fierced Warhammer for the last two decades completely undermining the game uninsuring that only a select few people will ever play it see almost everyone has heard of Warhammer it's everywhere these days but it can be incredibly intimidating to start playing and not just because the blooks and all the posters are nine feet tall and they have a job description of enforcing the rule of a despotic grim dark government system and all the fans of Warhammer seem to be in favor of that don't worry they're just role-playing mostly but also because Warhammer has hundreds of different ways of engaging with it from lore to books to Miniatures piance TV shows games following Henry cavill's Instagram account it can be incredibly confusing for the average person to understand what it means to do Warhammer and this is actually a huge problem for Games Workshop how do you get all those millions of people that are are interested in the ideal Warhammer into actually playing the war game of Warhammer well here is Gibbs workshop's secret weapon meet combat Patrol the new Slimmer sexier sleeker Warhammer 40K this is the proposed solution to the Warhammer war game a problem but does it succeed can it drag new players into the Warhammer war game and is it good enough to have established wargamers saying goodbye to Warhammer 40K an embracing combat Patrol instead well I hope so because for one last Miniatures around means less chance of injury I had just finished my golden demon submission legendary hero on Lord Regent of the Imperium nihilus Commander Dante um unfortunately though when I stepped up to the gaming table I stepped onto a pile of 17 unopened bottles of sigfold burgundy contrast Citadel pants that had been left carelessly on the floor this caused me to trip and fall straight it on top of my commander Dante model causing the multi-part plastic kit depicting finely Rod armor with sculpted musculature and angelic ornamentation to go into my bottom iron halo first ah it was humiliating uh it took four hours to get all of the pieces back out and glued together it'll never win a Golden demon eye they still owned his feebled ax more Tallis though they've told me that it will make its way back to me eventually [Music] has this ever happened to you every day thousands of discourse minis or by dialing Pond law that's point five two nine on your phone and remember you deserve justice I'm compensation oh wow I could be entitled to high Munch thanks for looking after my rights Morgan and Morgan if you were to go onto the internet right now and type the words I'm thinking about buying some Warhammer models you're gonna get a thousand comments saying things like lol's Noob your money about to get owned by GW LOL or at least that's what the internet said when I started I might need to update my internet lexicon a little here do people still look at cat pictures but aside from their archaic jargon the answer net is correct Warhammer is an extremely expensive project for anyone to start you are indeed going to have to let your money be owned by GW I mean just look at Warhammer it looks expensive though not that type of Warhammer at this type of Warhammer thank you this is er Warhammer the perfect game the thing that everyone has in mind in games of Warhammer players will take Miniatures that they have personally built and painted and then do battle with other people's collections the average game can include potentially hundreds of tiny miniature soldiers all doing battle across a huge table and a game can take the meat of an entire evening to complete some people look at this image of Warhammer and they get excited others look on in fear and others may find themselves excited with fear this might be what you want but how the hell do you get here well you're going to need a lot of money for one you're looking at hundreds of dollars to get into these games between buying the rule books that denote how all the models work and operate the money spent on tools like Clippers and glue to build the models and then even more on pants to paint them all and of course the Miniatures themselves are extremely expensive it also takes time and I mean what if you don't like it this is horrible what if you span hundreds of dollars on Warhammer Rock up to a stonking big table and discover that okay you love to watch videos of man and big armor kill political dissidents but you don't actually enjoy the ACT hence the reason why there's always second-hand warhammers for seal on eBay Warhammer is a tough ask for most people and as a result many just never start at all so no Games Workshop needed to find a better way for people to start playing hence combat Patrol this is the new game mode for Warhammer 40K that is designed to be accessible and easy to play it's small skill fast and Casual it has clearly been designed to appeal to Henry cavill's Instagram account followers and all of those who have ever flirted with the idea of picking up their very own Space Marine and there's a number of key differences between this game mode and Stompy big bottles of Warhammer 40K that from now on in this video we're going to call big hammer so firstly you just need to buy the one thing one of these combat Patrol boxes these are an Army in a box a single discrete purchase you don't need to research what individual soldiers to buy or how to equip them instead this box continues to discreet Miniatures on what weapons those Miniatures are equipped with are set by Games Workshop in a list online so you just need to follow what they say there's no choices to make no need to think and that's great news for beginners who might not want to accidentally commit to building a bond weapon Loadout for their individual Miniatures it also means that a player can build the models inside quickly and get straight into playing the actual game plus because you're only using the miniature is inside a combat Patrol box that means that around a dozen or so of them you can play on a far smaller table an actual dining room table rather than buying a bespoke 6x4 war gaming table and an entire house to put it in also you don't need to buy the rules to combat Patrol the way you do with a game a big hammer it used to be the case that if you wanted to play Warhammer you'd need one of these bad boys a big stunk and Tome filled with all the rules and then another smaller big book with all the stats for your chosen Army but with combat Patrol each Army box has all the rules and stats and special abilities listed for free on the Warhammer Community website say goodbye to Pepper people those are really expensive on these abilities and stats for combat Patrol may even differ from the standard big Hummer game so for example this unit of operant usually have a special ability that makes them resistant to damage but in combat Paw Patrol that would be too strong and so they just don't have that ability think of the Miniatures inside this box less as models and more like bundles of actions and abilities in combat Patrol you don't get a choice of what they do Games Workshop have tweaked all the units inside here to hopefully be balanced against other combat Patrol armies when you buy one of these you should be able to take on anyone else's box regardless of what army they picked up and with a few exceptions that generally holds true if you're familiar with card games like magic the Gathering then you might be familiar with pre-constructed decks of cards where you're given a deck of cards that synergize together and are designed to face other opponents coherently with combat Patrol you get the same thing but this time with Miniatures each of them given special abilities designed to work well with each other and this is really important because War Hunter 40K has 24 different factions to choose from admittedly how half of those are just different colored Space Marines but hey who doesn't love the Power Rangers on each faction does play very differently this can create an analysis paralysis in new players when it comes to deciding who they're going to play in big hammer usually when you buy into a faction of Warhammer 40K if you want to play the starter game mode you're engaging in a pretty huge commitment you're marrying your faction Choice you're spending hundreds of dollars buying all the Space Marines you need settling dying getting an impulsor tattooing suspicious iconography onto your face with combat Patrol you get to instead engage in a non-traditional polyamorous pod find dozens of different armies are you interested in adeptus mechanicus we'll pick up the combat Patrol see if their play style is for you have Drew Carey call your fancy we'll try out the combat Patrol gone are the days of spending six hundred dollars on hundreds of Miniatures only to discover that actually the idea of playing a glasscon in faction sounds like fun but in practice this is maybe a little too hard for your increasingly sleep deprived brand and actually you're just not good enough at the game to do so yes this section of the video has gotten a little bit autobiographical instead gives Workshop have done a great job here of making big hammer smaller and therefore more digestible unaccessible than ever before this is genuinely perhaps the greatest game the greatest thing Games Workshop have ever done when it comes to the game of Warhammer why why are we still rolling that's it right hey why the hell is this video got so much more run time left oh I see what's happening there's a mid video twist coming up isn't there okay fine so I gotta be honest combat Patrol definitely seems to be made for new players and don't get me wrong it really is still the most accessible way to play Warhammer but actually I think it kind of feels at the task of attracting new hobbyists to the game and that actually established wargamers with large collections are gonna be the people who get the most out of this game mode combat Patrol is currently being advertised by Games Workshop as a stepping stone into the standard big hammer game once a player has a few games of Comb Paw Patrol under their belt they're often recommended to buy more models of their chosen faction to help get them to a 1000 points game but I think that this is a massive mistake instead players should buy sideways buying different combat rules to add more variety to the combat Patrol experience because I think that that's where this Gamo truly shines combat Patrol can't stand on its own as a distinct gear mode I own hundreds of Warhammer Miniatures from my two decades of playing war games and as a result I already have like 10 different combat patrols and that means that I've been able to play dozens of games and never felt bored with this game mode once seeing how different factions match up against one another is a ton of fun like using a cheat code to unlock all the fighters in a game of Tekken and believe it or not but combat Patrol can be even models on the table there's less spectacle but sometimes less is more and that's very true for Warhammer at its best big Hammer 40k can be a lot of fun with huge epic moments surprisingly deep strategy and massive swings of momentum has dozens of Miniatures Clash on an immersive battlefield but at its worst big hammer can't be clunky complicated slow imprecise and prone to arguments it can feel sometimes like the solution to every problem is to spend more it is a game with a very slow piercing and it comes bundled with a lot of badly written rules and a lot of flicking through rule books at the table as a result and this means the games can proceed at a glacial Pierce across hours and hours to play a game of big hammer you're setting aside at least an entire evening but maybe even an entire weekend kanban Patrol manages to mitigate a lot of these problems some of the worst elements of Warhammer can be solved by reducing the scope of the game it doesn't fix everything combat Patrol still uses a system where one player activates all of their models moving them shooting with them and then charging into melee with them to fight the enemy models and if you're the player that's not currently active all you can do is browse Reddit on your phone and hope that not too many of your own models die which means that you can hurt your opponent back when it comes finally around to your turn the game can be really mean sometimes and feel very one-sided like your Hans are tied behind your back as your opponent gets to punch you repeatedly in the face and when you play a huge game of big hammer it feels like your opponent is armed with a hundred different fists and when they get to choose what their army consists of those fists feel like they're made of iron and combat Patrol however whenever the Army sizes are this small and you don't get a choice of what to bring then it feels like there's not so many fists and they don't hit quite as hard and this means that the game feels less like it's decided by who wins the coin toss to go first and there's a lot more strategy involved in combat Patrol as a result likewise lies the smaller skill means that you get to enjoy your lovingly painted and handcrafted Miniatures more with baycommer sometimes you'll span RS and R painting a model only for it to be killed and destroyed in a matter of seconds neverlasting a single turn this is especially true if you play squishy factions like I do word up to my Drew Carey Gene stealer and sisters of bottle siblings but I can hear the comment section I hold on discourse are you saying that combat Patrol is a better game than big Hummer well not necessarily but I am saying that it's a different experience one that Warhammer players should try combat Patrol often feels more balanced faster paced and more fun admittedly this does come at the expanse of depth of options but oh boy there is a lot of variety here if you're willing to buy boxes belonging to different factions and that is where we start to run into a bit of trouble and my biggest criticism of this game mood rears its head these combat Patrol boxes are expensive one of these will set you back 160 dollars in America or 95 pounds if you're in the UK and that's only for one Army 17 Miniatures in this one you'll need to face off against someone else's Force though which will mean another box on top and for someone this might be just too much to ask I think these boxes would work a lot better at a price point of around 95 or 75 pounds this is the price point the games workshops competitor mounted games have set for their very own Army boxes for their rival miniature war game firefight the reality is the combat Patrol might be a cheaper Warhammer but combat Patrol is still pretty pricey when it comes to war game products unfortunately the pricing intrudes on the fun here and that's really unfortunate because this could be a very fun distinctive gear mode but behind this type of paywall I just don't see it taking off amongst board gamers or those flirting with the game the primary demographic that this game mode is aimed at luckily if you're watching this video and you do want to pick up combat Patrol I have an affiliate Link in the description of this video that will bring you to a website that sells Warhammer for up to 20 off including combo Patrol boxes sadly most board gamers are those flirting with Warhammer I.E the primary demographic that I think this game mode is in that won't know about these savings meaning the cost will continue to be a significant barrier to entry to this game nevertheless though for those already invested in the Warhammer Kool-Aid this is a modern purposeful kitchen table gaming mode for Warhammer 40K and it is a lot of fun I just wish it was a ride when I was younger because this is exactly what I would have wanted I give combat Patrol a 7 out of 10 and I awarded a space on my shelf discourses check it out I am indeed saying goodbye to big Hummer not combat Patrol is my friend and if you enjoyed this review why not check out my patreon where I've got a few more exclusive reviews of various war games and other bonus content and I help support my effort to bring more content like this to wargaming there's a link in the description below now if you want to hear about why the new 10th edition of Warhammer 40K has a lot of unfortunate problems check out this video here and a huge thanks to my patrons especially cryptocav mistress Arby nuvini and Travis Hunter I really appreciate it guys I'll catch y'all next time bye bye
