FULL MATCH: Argentina vs. Mexico 2010 FIFA World Cup

so who will stay and who will be on the red eye home soon we'll discover the name of the fourth of the eight quarterfinalists at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and we're at the venue for the final with Argentina among the favorites to claim the title against Mexico at Soccer City in Johannesburg an arena holding close to 88 000. Argentina played Korea Republic here in group b Mexico opened the tournament with a one-old draw against the host South Africa back on June the 11th let's have a look at the way these sides line up first of all the argentines Maradona have the luxury of being able to give playing time to several of his second choice players last time out now he reverts to his preferred eleven Walter Samuel is not fully Fitz and Nicholas padizo continues to deputize and Gonzalo iguero who got a hat-trick against Korea in his last visit to Soccer City returns to go hunting for goals in attack a little chap it's a tough one this for the referee if he changes his mind there could be Mayhem here the Mexicans are Furious I enjoy a referee Rosetti got a message well the first thing is he needs to get all these players away from surrounding him he's like he's in the old Corral here the goal is given the goal stands well some sympathy for Mexico but referee Rosetti was a really tough call for him but he's having to go back again there is still a trio of Mexican players confronting the referee's assessment on the far side Stefano and Aldi but teves has got the goal if Argentina aren't complaining Mexico certainly are it will be replayed time and time and time again who scored against Serbia and Montenegro in a six nil win four years ago has a goal that makes it one nil in Johannesburg well the goal was scored in the 26th and it were already in the 28th because of all those complaints and now will that change the the murder of the game you fear that one or two Mexicans are going to lose their heads in the captain of all people is the first Marquez he's not had a previous booking in the tournament we certainly deserve one there and that was in the aftermath of the previous incident I'm sure well how much of Messi did he get enough for the referee to give the free kick so uh senior Rossetti continues to attract controversy sending kewell off from Australia and now allowing a goal that Mexico felt was a palpably offside Argentina's eighth goal of these World Cup finals with power to add and they will be a difficult side and a Resolute side for Mexico to break down now and here they are again there's a really up for it now Argentine if they get the second they'll fill the jobs half done [Music] well they do move with Fleet of foot and they've got so many potential goal scorers Tevis has got the one here iguang got a hat-trick here last time we all know message capabilities and on the bench Sergio Aguero Martin Palermo and Diego Milito not about Trio messy still he different circumstances the stuffing may have been knocked out of the Mexicans let's see here they come themselves with Juarez well strangely enough it was in this stadium that Argentina in the shape of the Michaelis gifted a goal to Korea Republic that was an even greater gift I think and now the try from distance is fingered Away by Romero Mexico willing to try their luck from distance and Salcido twice he's rattled the crossbar once and he stretched the Argentine goalkeeper this time Mexico you feel have to regain their composure quickly after the concession of that awful second goal they're trying to do exactly that with torado other more goals in this game to come the chance here for dos Santos to cross a telling ball in three Mexicans who wait the delivery [Applause] Donna an Ever more agitated figure down on the touchline I think referee Rosetti will want to get to the dressing room at halftime as well for a rethink officials need breaks just as much as players now in Juarez this is a good Mexican tilt requirements will go beyond uh and say but not be on the second man who came over to help here they go once again the goals appear on the cards every time they move forward now they're broken up and then it's steadied down with guardado defending on that occasion from Osorio has to certainly recover from his error Mexico with a lot to do now oh forget they give a steer away to his safety as far as it got back to cover good job otherwise it was Game set match the Mexicans all over the place defensively and their previous three games they conceded only two goals one here to South Africa a cracking effort from uh shabalala and one in rustenburger a header from Suarez of Uruguay but they've conceded two here in the first 33 minutes the task is considerable if not insurmountable we're on course for Germany against Argentina in Cape Town another former world champion will go home well not the occupying Argentine mines at the moment it's still another eight and a half minutes to go in this half which is turning out so very well for them they might have a third keeper saves it first time and second time it's blocked well a score could be anything at the moment away this time by terrado the good play from Bautista they need a break of some sort Giovanni Dos Santos across there to guardado Hernandez in the center waiting along with Bautista Salcido thought once again about a crack at goal he's had a couple of good ones no more than a throw in but the Mexican defense is living on a knife's edge it's been walking a tightrope in winning goal against Angola last month but this is a rather bigger occasion with all due respect to that country Romero is poised guardado will look to either beat him or planted on somebody's head in remaining in this half there will be a couple added on for the response of the Mexicans to the concession of that first goal I'm absolutely surrounded the officials without a case I have to say but it was rather prolonged The Ball statistics are that Argentina lead by two goals Mexico found the only player yellow carded in Marquez but there's a considerable story behind The Script [Music] and eventually there's a very delayed blow on the whistle from referee Rossetti for the foul on Di Maria by Juarez and Di Marie has already tumbled over the touchline so you can receive a treatment from the medical society if he requires it back in 1930 Argentina beat Mexico 6-3 in the very first World Cup finals well they might have been on course for six again here I remember they did score six four years ago against Serbia and Montenegro so when they're in the mood they can be prolific cheer Rodriguez will leave it for Lionel Messi as they seek out a third goal doesn't come to Rodriguez and then when it was put to the edge of the area easily cleared some of the goals have been all too easy that the argentines have scored this time the goalkeeper Perez with a smaller goalkeepers in the world cup at five foot seven Ramsey and sets his team forward with guardado [Music] five minutes before a break Osorio whose hapless mistake led to that second goal that could be so punishing to the Mexican cools [Applause] one other telling statistic is that Argentina have committed only 3 000 in this game to the Mexicans 10. suppose it shows which way the tide is flowing [Music] roaming's a good purpose [Music] the free kick that's why everything's been slowed down to walking pace the free kick count against the Mexicans keeps going up and up they'll be hoping the goal count doesn't go up and up and up as Tevis receives from Messi plays it into that wide position for Maxi the cross is looking good should have been three should certainly have been three from the head of higuaine he has scored from a similar scenario on this pitch but it's over Osorio who's having a sorry time in this half and iguain should have put Argentina three to the good the only thing you could say in his defense he was probably a little misated coming in behind the defender [Music] well I imagine the Mexicans have a defensive coach I think he needs to have a word with a few of them I could have a dressing room lecture oh yeah this is ones who certainly need a break but that was a good interception that was excellent play to release dos Santos he in turn finds Bautista getting there just ahead of Demi kalis swinging one over for uh hands belonging to Romero to grab it [Music] and say but clear as it might say and that was Oreo has to use Giovanni Dos Santos who likes it on the left foot better than the right so that's the way weaves across field still manages to provide some space for a shot from Marquez drill straight into the midriff of goalkeeper Romero Marquez who scored at two World Cup finals he also netted in the match against Argentina in 2006 and scored a year against South Africa Argentina bossing it Salcido for Mexico when they lose the ball they're in trouble but torado intercepts this attempted clearance fires it into the path here [Music] oh you didn't get anywhere at all Juarez Rodriguez [Music] 30 seconds remain in the opening half in Soccer City Argentina delighted with the way the first 45 minutes have gone not yet quite finished but once again the whistle goes in their favor hence taking a crack on the ankle no doubt he'll be up and running again very shortly and we'll be able to inform you as to how much time will be added pain in the back makes you short to Tevis the two combined delightfully uh it was easy for them but uh now there's an opportunity once again there's Salcido is awarded a free kick two minutes of added time I think the spectators will want to go away for a warm drink tonight and a cold and a very windy evening in Johannesburg actually the Soweto on the outskirts guardado trying to give them something to take into the break with a minute and a half to find a goal which would change the tenor of the evening no doubt and maybe Marquez can get through here Juarez the ball is good the chance is there and guardado hustles away and they don't even get the corner Argentina work hard people concentrate on the skillful aspects and their goal scoring there's a chance right on half time and then Andes needed a toe on that and it would have been 2-1 that's all he needed but it got through to Romero and it looks as though Argentina are going to get to the halftime break unscathed and lead by those two goals from Carlos Tevez and Gonzalez [Music] Dorado [Music] NJ gets a good shove in the back for a man unders which he felt was unnecessary what is a mum's game isn't it I don't even know if he's bothered to give the free kick it's been a frustrating half for the Mexicans they were competing nicely they'd hit the Argentine crossbar shoving the back there and it was only a throw in after all that why did he even bother to lecture him we've had 47 minutes of play and we have no more referee Rossetti says let's have half time so Carla Salcido struck the Argentine crossbar before Gonzalo Higuain and Carlos Tevez scored the goals Tevis is the most controversial effort that have given Argentina the advantage here and a very good advantage to take with them as well they've scored nine goals in these World Cup finals in four games the Mexicans have the proverbial mountain to climb in the second half if they're going to come through and the referee is still rushing to separate some very agitated people on the touchline two nil at half time to Argentina oh he will be replacing Adolfo Bautista who's a World Cup has only started this evening and may well it sounds probably just finished it's certainly finished for tonight and Bautista off [Music] and it would be a major surprise now if Mexico were to overcome this Argentina side which is enhancing its reputation as one of the favorites to lift the World Cup of 2010. to another scoreline Tevis the Little Beaver chases Marquez the diesel back to Romero straight from one goalkeeper to the other to Oscar Perez who's at 37 one of the oldest goalkeepers here I'm not sure they will be the first free kick of this half and he's won by Aaron andez and already taken to bring Salcido into play now barrero his first touch of the ball let's see whether he's a good introduction for Aguirre or not guardado once again prayer and he's popped one in here which uh surely took a deflection of somebody it did and out for a Mexican corner and it's their first of the match coming in the first 90 seconds of the second half well we have seen side score goals in the early minutes of the second half I mean just come back after being a couple behind notably the other night Chile did that they were two down to Spain and scored in age of 20 having earned his money in the carpentry trade [Music] still 3-1 Argentina in front exactly 15 minutes remaining are there more goals on the horizon for Gonzalo Higuain ottomendi let's make good progress down the touch line and as the ball goes out over the touch over the sideline he'll get the free kick for the trip well uh not gonna Rush this that's the situation it doesn't look as for his country there's a right fullback I'm not quite sure how that works but that's the way it is Rodriguez stepped out to win it for Mexico now they move forward but when it's lost the dangerous straight away here with Messi the ball seemingly tight to that left boot of his Mascherano allowed to get out as far as and say good moments around the edge of that 18-yard box nipped in the bud sharply Salcido really excited the crowd with his goal is there more excitement on the count here from Argentina Mexicans are surrounding Messi every time he's near the ball at the moment the departure of Tevis has a changed the course of the game as well and Mexico setting themselves up there but Mascherano should surely take it away here but Mexico still with four five men back not committing everybody to attack Rodriguez played last season for Liverpool having left Atletico Madrid I know Gutierrez will come on taking over from the Maria he hasn't seen his number go up yet he away to [Music] well things seems to have calmed down after if you may remember in the aftermath of the first Tevez goal the Mexicans were infuriated and They Carried that Fury into uh half time where there was a bit of unseemly conduct on the touchline now Argentina have three forward but they've lost the way they've suddenly stopped passing the ball impressively giving it back to the Mexicans letting them come at them as Osorio does now in company with terrado then with Juarez now with Salcido the likes of uh Juarez though and Vela and Dos Santos really are the future for Mexico has gone out but their World Cup campaign seems to be drawing to an end despite that encouraging goal from Javier Hernandez he's another for the future of course and it would appear that maradona's Argentina are heading for the last eight and for Cape Town and a meeting with Germany hopefully played more times for Argentina than Maradona in the World Cup now he's proving himself as a coach others have Germany through earlier in the day now Argentina Uruguay of course went through yesterday and so did Garner so it's great that Africa still has a representation in the last eight Wendy said he got a bang on the lip there for his troubles from terado caught by the elbow messy short messy again into the area dribbling through still little messy he still can't get a goal no matter how he tries Lionel Messi can't find the back of the net at the moment and he's Beyond Marquez he's Beyond terrado it's going for the top corner until Perez reacts perfectly 4-1 would somehow have summed up the night probably a more realistic score line to be fair Argentina have been that much Superior and it would have been a goal that he would have cherished himself foreign [Music] would be a quite ridiculous score line to be honest he's offside anyways Franco so it's probably his last World Cup as well Franco at the age of uh 33 [Music] Argentina have made it through the result has never been in doubt from the moment they got their first goal they've triumphed here by three goals to one against a Mexican side that was second best maradona's March continues Argentina go through to meet Germany in Cape Town on the 3rd of July and deservedly so as well foreign there were two goals for Carlos teves and there was a single goal as well tonight for Gonzalo iguain who is now the top scorer in these World Cup finals of 2010. job done for the South Americans who continue to enjoy themselves here in the World Cup finals of 2010 in South Africa here he can only reflect on the quality of the goals that they conceded the first one was more than debatable Tevis in an offside position the second was a gift the third was Unstoppable so at the end of this night in Soccer City Argentina triumph over Mexico by three goals to one oh
