committed relationship choose someone who's not going to cheat here is today's case i brought my boyfriend henry to divorce court because he's addicted to gambling and he puts every female in his life before me i'm here on divorce court because my girlfriend kayla is very jealous and controlling when i first met henry i met him and he gambled away his whole paycheck the first day he got it i know i have a gambling problem but she don't make it any better when she come gambling with me she make it worse if henry can't get it together i'm not moving forward with this relationship i want to marry caleb but she keep trying to be controlling up my money i'm done i'm out part is now in session the honorable judge faith jenkins presiding your honor as you know for the first time on divorce court you're honor today's case is gilbert versus coleman thank you kayla gilbert yes your honor you have brought mr henry coleman to court today yes sir good day to you you say if he does not stop gambling away all your money and shutting you out you are ready to end the relationship yes your honor i understand the two of you have been together for a little over two years why don't you start by giving me some background yes ma'am i'm here today because about two years ago i met henry when buying a car and after dating for a while you know we kind of started to see each other's differences as for instance henry has a really bad gambling problem he puts all of his friends before me all of his female friends to be exact our ancestry levels are at an all-time low and things are just starting to become very different between us at this time what do you have to say about that mr coleman um yes your honor i'm here today because kayla's very controlling she's very emotional and you know i'm kind of wanting things to end as well but i'm here today because i kind of want to work on it too so i'm in the middle it's just a lot you're in the middle you're undecided right now so the two of you met you were going to buy a car he was working at the car lot was he selling cars at the time yes ma'am he was a car salesman um and i was there getting a car that he was originally supposed to be the one to help me purchase the car but um that day he had taken off so the next day when i turned in my other car he was there and i met him because he offered me a trash can to clean out my car oh okay wonderful does that line always work for you a little bit yes ma'am whatever it takes to sell a car right yes ma'am how long have you been in the car selling business sir i've been in the industry for about i would say seven years now seven years and do you still work at a dealer no ma'am i'm currently uh just basically flipping cars i'll find a car fix them up and then we'll sell them and how much of a profit are you making on average per car uh double to triple double to triple how many cars do you flip a year um between average between like 30 to 40 cars okay so that's how you're making an income for yourself flipping cars oh those are examples of some of the cars yes ma'am that you buy yes ma'am you have them repaired and then you sell them for a higher price got it i understand so the two of you go on to date what's their relationship like at the beginning before you say you started noticing some of the problems so when i first met henry we were texting back and forth and it was kind of a red flag because i asked him what did he like to do for fun henry said fish tables i never knew what a fish table was i never heard of it so we were supposed to be going on our first date and henry got his paycheck i had to go find henry so we could go on our first date because he was at a game room and spent his whole paycheck at a fish table how did you know where he was i called one of his friends and asked them where i asked her where would henry be at and she said girl i know where he's at and when she heard i guess when she called him on the phone and she heard the little music in the background because they have like little noises to them she took me directly to where he was and he was he was there what is fish table uh it's it's a way we gamble it's like a big fish table and multiple players can basically play on it so it's a form of gambling okay so you find him at the fish table yes ma'am and what do you see when you show up there um i actually didn't go inside um to begin with when i first got there i just seen his truck he had a trailblazer at the time so i see in his truck she went inside to go get him and i came out i had never seen a fish table until further on in our relationship did he leave the fish table to come out and see you yes ma'am did you go out on a date um yes ma'am we did no miss gilbert now listen i've i've been doing this for a while now if somebody asks you out on the first date and you have to go hunt them down and find them and call around to their friends to say do you know where he is this may not be an ideal situation for you man yes ma'am so you had to find him to take you out on your first date yes ma'am and actually that was the first official date the first actual date we were at his house um he was i guess trying to push me off but i know i'm very aggressive and he was trying to push me off and he was saying oh he had to go do so and so his dad but it's like i really like you i'm ready to go on this date so i was like i'll go with you to go see your dad then he told me he was going to go eat with his friends okay i'll go with you to go see your friends so all of the first three dates were basically you inserting yourself into wherever he was yes ma'am how's this working out for you mr coleman did you like the fact that she was showing up she was on location she she pursued me she was very consistent i liked her consistency but it was kind of possessive and i was like you know it's overwhelming for me but she was adamant about us being together so i was like you know what i'll give it a shot you know i'm not talking or dating at this time so she's consistent and she seemed like a pretty good woman and she was persistent right right right so you start dating and then you realize that there is a problem what happened um so i kind of adjust myself to it um because you know as a woman when you get in a relationship with somebody you want things to work you submit yourself to them so i start trying to do the things that he likes to do we went gambling together but then it became a problem when i realized that in order for him to go gambling when he doesn't have the funds he starts to take things to the pawn shop i went and got him the brand new iphone 11. um henry ended up taking that iphone 11 to the pawn shop to get 200 i don't feel like i need permission well i think the bigger issue is that you were desperate for money that you would take an eleven hundred dollar phone and get whatever you could get for 200 something dollars so you can go gamble [Music] so i had a speaker and i asked henry what happened to my speaker henry told me that the speaker somebody stole it out of my car just to find out later in in time that he had taken the speaker to the pawn shop to get money to go gambling and what other things you you have a list here you said that he pawned a phone um yes ma'am when i first met henry his phone was in the pawn shop he had lost that phone at that time so i went ahead and i got him a new phone um just because you know i want to be in contact with you i feel like i'm doing you a favor i went and got him the brand new iphone 11. um henry ended up taking the iphone 11 to the pawn shop to get 200 and this is your receipt from the pawn shop um yes ma'am i don't feel like i need permission you know it was a gift she gave me the phone as a gift for my birthday last year well i think the bigger issue is that you were essentially desperate for money that you would take an eleven hundred dollar phone and get whatever you could get for 200 something dollars so you can go gamble with the money right actually your honor i did it for my own personal reasons i did it because she was controlling when i'm asleep at night she going through my phone she putting the tracking device all on the phone so she could track my every move and i'm like this is just it's a little too much you very controlling possessive so the point i was proving she can't control me she can't track me you know i am my own man and when you met me you knew the lifestyle that i i was living you know i like to gamble that's something i do for entertainment so i mean that's that's just how did you pawn the speakers i did i did why did you lie about it just so she wouldn't feel as bad and i feel as though i would have had enough time to get it back before she realized it was gone because she wasn't even using it i don't find myself controlling as to going through his phone and stuff at night henry has a prior relationship that he was attached to so my issue with going through the phone was i want to see what you're doing because you go through my phone it was a mutual thing it wasn't just one person going through the phone and like i do multiple things for henry for our anniversary last year i got him a wonderful blanket for the both of us henry pretty much just shoots everything that i have going on he shoes it off the blanket at this time is folded up this is the cabinet yes ma'am the photos of the two of you yes in happier times you said that you had these items these gifts for him did he get something for you no ma'am he didn't get me anything the day of our anniversary i got nothing i i didn't see anything i didn't have anything henry's excuse was oh i don't give gifts anymore my ex got everything from me i'm not a gift-giving person then after he seen how bad i felt and after i spoke to my friend about the issue i'll say a few days later he bought me some flowers but it's not our anniversary did you spend the day with him on your anniversary um yes ma'am i did spend half the day with him and then he left me to go hang out with one of his older friends you say you pay most of the bills i'm the type of person where i want all of my bills handled so yes we can go half and half but if it comes down to and you don't have your half today i'm going to go ahead and pay it and you would just give me your half later yes johnny i just think she's better with the money management side so really right i give her i think i have an idea as to why right right because i like to gamble i do give her the responsibility of handling the bills but i do make sure there's money to take care of the bills as well mr coleman today is really about you i just feel like life is too short people die every day gambling this year and gambling you really don't win it it's like the house get the money but it's it's entertainment i don't really do it i mean of course i want to win money but it's more so entertainment for me so you've lost all the money you've gambled this year i wouldn't say i lost and i wouldn't say i really won and you've been gambling every day er just about and you've been pawning things right yeah in the hopes that you can go back in 30 or 60 days and get them back without her noticing what are some of the other things you've pawned this year um just mostly electronics but when i do gamble i make up for it in a week by selling the car so that money is replaced do you realize that you have a problem yes i do yes your honor okay because just from the 10 minutes i've spent with you today i have to say i'm very concerned yes because you are very young and you're telling me you're there every day but you're not really winning anything not really so you're losing entertainment so it's not entertaining when it's all encompassing and it's taking over your life it's not entertainment anymore because it is your life it is your relationships it is your job yeah absolutely it is your family so mr coleman today is really about you and what you're going to do to get help for yourself to get control of this impulse that you can't control it's out of control right yes you're on there i just feel like life is too short people die every day i could be dead tomorrow i could be dead tomorrow so why not enjoy my life to the fullest oh are you enjoying yourself i don't think you are yes very much so i don't think you are mr coleman because i'm gonna tell you let's no we're gonna if we're gonna be real today let's go all the way real yes your honor the two of you a few weeks ago went gambling because you go with them and i'm going to talk to you about that next because you say you have your situation under control but you can't take an alcoholic into a bar and then say don't drink yes or just have one or two drinks what do you think is going to happen so you told me that you know that this has been an issue for you and you've been depressed about it yes so don't come into court and tell me oh this is entertainment and life is so short so i'm just entertaining myself life is too short for you to not be able to live your life because you're too busy gambling everything you have away so i'm going to tell you something you have a gambling addiction and you need to get help yes you're on i'm very aware of that i am but are you really ready to do that honestly no because i mean it's not a lot going on in the world as far as like the you know kova everyone's been quarantining so this is what you wanted what i want to do exactly so you have to ask yourself miss gilbert you're 21 years old yes ma'am do you want to be in a relationship with someone who has a gambling addiction who's not ready to get help yes ma'am because i feel as if people are able to change and i don't have a gambling addiction because when i go gamble i win not necessarily saying that he doesn't win but there is like nine times out of ten i win compared to six times out of ten he'll win i just feel like she's contributing to the problem just last week we went to play poker we had around three grand going in the poker room that day we lost pretty bad yeah all of them yes we did she may seem like she got it under control and you may feel like you win but you you also have it just as bad as me yeah cause you don't pick up on my addiction we're basically not necessarily because there's other excuses do either one of you not understand that if you win is not the issue he knows that he has a problem whether or not you do either way you're enabling him by going gambling with him for seven hours and the two of you losing three thousand dollars so you cannot complain about his gambling miss gilbert if you're going to go and spend six or seven hours and spend thousands of dollars gambling and you say i don't have a problem i'm just doing this for fun knowing for sure that he does [Music] so the two of you have a very long difficult hard road you set up for yourselves and your future because the first step you have to take in order to get help as an addict you have to know that you have a problem and you have to be willing to take that step i've seen people families try to engage in interventions they've begged they've cried they've pleaded with them none of it works until you make a choice you have not hit rock bottom yet but when you do i have when you do i know what it feels like to be at the bottom the bottom is to not have control of your life right and you don't have control of your life you're right because i'm letting it get the best of you you're not letting it get the best of you you don't have a choice anymore because it's taken over your life yes sir and if you are going to stay in this relationship you're going to have to come to grips with who you're in a relationship with you can't go gambling with him you can't be a willing participant you can't enable him and if his addiction has somehow seeped over and you're on the cusp you got to get it together right now you are 21 years old miss gilbert with your entire life ahead of you i don't know why right now you are choosing the difficult path not making a good choice and i'm not saying abandon people in their time of need no you don't have to be in a romantic relationship you can be there for him as a friend and help him get it together but it doesn't mean being a gambling buddy doesn't mean being a girlfriend it means you need help and until you get the help that you need i have to stand with you but i can't stand with you and be in this relationship while you're pawning my things and trust me when i tell you you're not helping him even if you think you are and you're honest you have two children sir yes i do okay i'm gonna tell you something and i'm gonna close this case there were two sons they had an alcoholic father he had an addiction to alcohol they grew up one of them became an alcoholic and they asked him what happened he said i watched my father the other child grew up never touched a drop of alcohol became a successful business person they said what happened he said i watched my father your children are watching you you are their role model you are the person that they look up to you can't possibly be all you need to be to them if something else is controlling your every move and your life so the choice that you have to make to get it together you do it for you you do it for your loved ones you do it for the children that are watching you and emulating everything you do good luck to both of you what i thought of judge faith's verdict is um yes maybe i do enable henry but i'm still going to continue to stick by his side i think judge faith verdict was very fair i think she kind of understood both points i think she was very fair overall i think we definitely have a lot of potential and we just like she said need to seek serious help and counseling i'm going to try my best to control definitely control my gambling habit and seek help see if i can get some professional help um what i can do is i can focus more on when it comes to gambling saying no i think we should just stay at home and chill today yeah so i feel like things can work i think we can get through it but we just have to do it together right right [Music]
