Full Ceiling Skimming Tutorial - Smooth Your Ceiling in 11 Minutes with Patch Dudes!

what's up everybody Orr from Pat's new here and today we're going to teach you how to skim out the ceiling using level five skimming knives extension and some drywall compound first step if you're in the greater Toronto area I want you to turn off this video called past dude and we'll do it for you but if you're curious to know how to do it the magic sure is to have a j and he'll do it for you now Jake we'll show you right now so first thing we're using a 24 inch level 5 skimming knife these things are like a cheat code if you're doing a lot of skimming or finishing work we're using the level 5 extension the new one and a little handle so all you got to do put the little tabs down find your middle and snap it into place now we have already rolling out the drywall compound this is ultra light mud mixed down with about a sponge of water it's very important to mix it very very thin so you can roll it out longer distances so first to adjust it a little Bunch you pull it much better than the old style which was a Twist and used to get broken now for the scanning part the technique is very simple first you want to take off the month as much mud as you can by not taking off too much and you can basically manipulate how much mud you're taking off by the angle of the knife and how much pressure you put on the flatter the knife is against the ceiling the less mud you're taking off the more of a 90 degree closer to 90 degree angle the more mud you're taking off so to begin with all we're going to do is get our mud right into the edges so we're going to take a bit off and go into the corners you also want to use a little six inch knife to clean out the knife this is all very usable mud they would still have here so whatever doesn't get on the ceiling it goes back into too much so we want to just basically get the mud into the corners I'm not worrying too much right now about how good of how bad it looks and now we have mud into the corners everything is rolled out and now we're going to go over our first pass just to clean out the place so put it into the corner go out as far as you can wipe it off back into the corner wipe it up this is pretty tedious process but the more you wipe off of your time the better you're gonna be so when you're going back to the ceiling for your next flight this is how your knife should look like if you have even a little bit of mud on it you're going to drag dried up crap and that's not going to be good foreign so I like the 24 inch knife because it's not too small but not too big at the same time that way I can cover a pretty large area of pretty fast versus the 32 that can get a little bit heavier if you're skimming out a lot or a little distance and we'll pick that up and I know what all the cop people and experts in the comments are going to say oh you're living so many lines and you don't know what you're doing this guy super shot we're not in America no one's getting shot this is just the first class like I said we're gonna go over the Hall of Fame three times the first fast is simply to get the mud off as you can see there's a lot of mud on the ceiling that's a good thing foreign so another little tip that we use I think Jay will show you the difference between what I'm skimming now and the first coat we tint our first coat to a yellow tip that way we can see what's been coated a second time and what hasn't been told in the second time and since our second coat is just white mud that covers the paint better too so we're not just beautiful we're also smart no but for real people that have been doing it for a while the difference between the level five one more thing we love about it is that uh compared to the Colombia for example which is an amazing life set um these guys are way lighter I don't know what material executive made from probably aluminum but it's very light very easy on the shoulder so even weak guys like me can do a good job for a long time so now we have the ceiling wiped off first I'm gonna go over the entire area a second time but what I'm going to do I'm going to put a bit more of an angle so my first coat was basically this angle second coat I'm gonna go flatter on the ceiling so I'm leaving it you see I'm taking a lot less mud off so basically the second coat second white is meant to Simply Clean Out and even out and smooth out the ceiling get rid of any air bubbles we might have and ensure we don't have percent of time you see again I'm going back up there with a clean knife foreign [Music] so the more I take off and the smoother and the flatter I leave it the less sanding we have to do the happier Dawson is and the nicer finish to climb this so I like to go half a room a half room and then go up from the end towards the middle that way I can work out all the bridge lines liftoffs and all that kind of stuff see very little mother putting back in there now we'll go here yes I know what you're thinking good looking and handy and straight it happens not often now this is what happens yeah Mika's not gonna like that so you can see when I'm overlocking them it's already coming out real nice and smooth I'm not too worried about liftoff Jake can you focus on this a little bit so this is a ridge that I want to get rid of and this little part here that's called the lift up when I'm lifting off the knife I'm not too worried about liftoffs those are pretty easy to send The Ridges take a bit more time to sand so on the third wipe I'm going from North from south to North then that gets rid of all the ridge points [Applause] oh and now that everything has been wiped twice this way and that way I'm gonna go this way crisscrossing and leave a pretty pretty pretty good bonus points of whoever knows that reference no sneezing in the background please so on the final one you see very very minimal mud this is all the mud that I took off versus on the first pass it was like this much in the bucket a lot trip on it what's your name that's it we have Perfect Skin type of ceiling looking really nice and flat we can keep messing it with it but sometimes less is more at this point it's very very smooth and very flat so it's ready for a quick uh sand with our Augustus machines we're gonna go over this with the mirka vacuum and sander with about 240 grit paper so very fine and we're going very very fast with it because we're not
