I got a couple hours to spend with frost Punk 2 the post-apocalyptic strategy game and survival game a play of resources across the icy reaches of a new civilization stretching up out of the frost a Winter's cold enough to kill everyone to a man a game of City survival set 30 years after something terrible happened to the world let's dig in this would be where I'd say smash the like button or subscribe or comment and I will because sometimes just like the game you need to do what's expected to get what's needed Frost Punk 2 is that same interplay of the original game heat humans and hunger consist stly juggling each to try to keep the never- ending tide of terrible situations that happen from killing everyone outright but it's always been Frost Punk's adherence to sacrifice equaling survival that continues here there's nothing odd about balancing letting your old people walk out into the ice and die taking their history and knowledge with them against putting child labor to full force of course we all agree that kids should be put to the grindstone as soon as possible but each decision from slaughtering Wildlife wholesale regardless of the possible future ramifications to walking around the city just handing out belts three times too small so everyone eats less continue to be pushed on you time and time again with all games of this style each decision sways just a little farther than expected and add in natural Seasons changing and you have yourself a game to build of course you need people and you need to get them to places which means ice dozing scraping and shaping trails in the ice for your people to get to and from workplaces then setting up collection districts for food and supplies items either left over from the ruin of the Apocalypse or some little bit of vegetation scraping for its own Survival in the the case of small editable lands to plant or get food stuff from unearthing supplies and setting up those locations to build homes are all specific to the different maps and important for city planning for example homes are vital but so too is their placement people need homes but if they're frozen human sickles breaking off fingers every time they open a door they're just going to be useless flipper handed automatons so you need to build housing districts for them to be near more heat sources or near one another large furnaces that burn coal from the reserves you find are a good heat source but building homes near a cold burning fuel stack is about as safe as putting your mouth over a semi- exhaust pipe and just hoping for the best and you're constantly and consistently balancing those expanding then needs to be very smart adding special buildings to the different districts which add requirements in heat and populations but give you special abilities and that's where the human cost starts to rear its head as your small pack tries to survive events they're going to have different things happen and the juggling game of putting down angry worker rebellions against putting trust at a height with the people inside the city and consistently deciding between double shifts to pull whatever Black Gold from the ground you can versus causing half your Workforce to come down with coal lung consistently occurs you have to balance the remaining resources in any location against possibly researching better mining Styles and Machinery with their own requirements that might crop up when you place them and change the ideas that you may have for building and consistently watching and tracking all this has to be measured against the time spent as well as the the seasons of winter deep winter and yep we're screwed and there's a push pull here the ability to turn the generator into an overdrive mode but possibly damage it is a situation that you might find yourself in as you need to add heat to homes so that you can turn on one of the special buildings that's turned off because everything got too cold you have to watch Food Supplies disease and various other factors that the game will consistently throw at you now it may all sound terrible but it's a dire World sure but it's also a Strangely Beautiful One packed in ice and P towards a slow Descent of ruination even as you try to rise each building has its own look of makeshift Punk pipes and steam vents blowing out cold dust next to homes that look like they'd make Mad Max just sigh and say nope workers Fight Against the Wind to get to and from different work areas bulldozer scrape the ice but Frost Punk keeps the eye on the prize in one particular way it doesn't let you really zoom in too close to the structures of people except for specific buildings because zooming In Too Close would give you empathy and frost Punk isn't about that even in its Graphics Tundras with Windswept bare locations as well as deep ravines that offer different respites from the difficulties in the game are consistently offered graphically quite well here workers that look like they're wearing threadbear clothes and frostbit and extremities extract one more ioda from the game world but in a world so Frozen that ice cubes would probably themselves in horror currently the game also runs where it's pretty much expected in this beta with some fits and stutters here and there but overall even when you get past the prologue it has just an excellent dire look to it the Viewpoint again just in the right place to give you a measure of what you need to keep marching on and what you may need to do to keep mankind actually going as you progress further the district groups start to grow and within those districts new londoners they're a particular faction who love technological prowess and research and think it'll be the only thing that keeps mankind going starts to show up as well as pilgrims who believe in adaption and keeping the old ways alive the Stewarts who think that control and unity will save every and the frost Landers who push for consistent change and each group has their different projects and you can also lend them cash to further their ideals which will change the demeanor of the city's people and work do poorly and you also get voted out of office and sent out to die consistently managing nature against nurture balancing humans against this horrendous location is what Frost Punk 2 is about you would not think that when you hear the music it is pretty magical right now it's discordant tracks sure sad strings playing out over the top of a somber slow soundtrack at times with occasional clashes and crashes higher soaring bits that give you a nice real Vibe of desolation but also just a tiny bit of hope there's also huge soaring moments here thick with a nice Symphony style that feels as epic and Grand as the locations but also a bit sad and desolate as the landscape it's an excellent mix between the two and while it never gets exactly to the hero Style soundtrack of success it's a bit more like a game always keeping you looking for that possible out or in this case hearing the theme of that I love the mix so far I also think the Voice work is pretty well done it's usually accompanied by someone mad or requesting Assistance or the occasional time where the overseer tells everyone not to worry when the generator's banging 150% of its total output out and sounds like a V8 with a bad cam shaft just shaking all over the place mini earthquake style it fits Works excellent to add to the atmosphere without really getting in the way and consistently pulling you from the gameplay the same with sounds they're well done with Zoomin letting you hear a little bit of the machinery pulse or thrum and drum depending on each machine's need and function and location Frost Punk 2 looks to keep the general feel of the original game alive as well furthering the fiction but not altogether pushing it to a point where this sequel is unrecognizable to the original also one excellent addition that's been added to frost Punk 2 in Frost Punk 1 there were times where the exact same steps almost felt programmed in like you had to build in the exact places it wanted and where choices offered felt a bit more like demands just given there were times in the original occasional moments where it felt like every single player you ever talked to almost took the identical step and that could be due to the survival mechanic itself but I'm wanting to play more to see if more flexibility is offered they're looking to further the situations and the environment and scenarios from the original game they've also added more to the sandbox the sandbox mode also now lets you choose starting groups and factions and they've stated it's in that desire of adding a bit more flexibility to this sequel that we didn't have in the original it's always nice to see a developer just look back and say you know what there were some things we could have done better there and we want to do so especially in a game like this that being said Frost Punk 2 in the preview also seemed to offer exactly what the original game did a Justice scales worth of Tit for Tat bad decisions against possibly worse ones no choice is going to offer success but instead lesser degrees of failure and where surviving long enough to move forward is like getting into that first mile post in a longdistance run each post is just enough to keep you going and make you feel satisfied with what you've done prior I'm excited to see this game when it fully releases I think that they've identified some of the issues that I had with the original that didn't pull it down too far but were definitely noticeable they have a very good focused idea of what they want to deliver to the gamer and it looks like they're pretty much there expect to see a review from me when this comes out if I have the time check out the podcast check out the patron peace out
