Freelance Sites vs Local Business ... what are the Pros and Cons?

so I'm gonna cover to two emails in this one I'll start with the first one here Pepe D since it's a public comment I'll show it publicly if you send me private emails questions I don't know if I can answer them because I get so many but if I do answer them I will cover up your identity unless you expressly say it's okay to let people know who I am as you seen in previous videos but if you publicly post on YouTube then you know I'll just take a screenshot you know like that since it's already out there right so Pepe Verdi said this guy is the biggest troll in the Internet laugh out loud so yeah this is from my shitty learn C++ in 2019 I'm not sure why he's saying that because I didn't get into nerd specifics that's what happens a lot of times with nerds if I come up with I should you learn super floss or Python or PHP or whatever and I'm talking about broader issues the market issues etc some nerds are looking for a very they're looking for a very tech or technical detail-oriented videos I think that's why I got that comment there you go what's funny the very I was my first but I did a video on shitty learn C++ of 2018 I think it was that one and I did that video with zero expectations of much traffic I thought then I might get 4000 views 5,000 views nothing much and so I just banged it out messy hair whatever I expressed my thoughts they even say at the very beginning of the video after fumbling through what I said initially I even say at the very beginning of video I say I've never written commercial code in C++ anyhow so long story short of course that video is my most popular video by far over a million views you never know how things are gonna work out so I appreciate you to call me the biggest troll in the world I I take I don't really think so but anyway like I guess I could see his point alright so let's get to the meter to question me fish I don't know how you pronounce that okay hello staff at the video talking about the pros and cons and working on freelance websites versus local business would be interesting so he's talking about going on you know a pork or something the freelance sites were you bid on contracts against people over the world what are the pros and cons well I guess the cons are that if you're not in India or Bangladesh or something you're in a richer country where your cost of living is much higher so you have to charge more right somebody in India their housing and food costs are probably much much much less than somebody living in the United States of Canada or mmm I guess most places in Europe right so you know if you have to pay you know four hundred thousand and a half a million dollars for your home versus fifty thousand you cannot charge more right so if you're in the West and you got to compete against people in India and Africa or wherever else on the contracts it could be daunting but even on those sites if you position yourself properly you develop reputation etc you learn the pricing models I talked about this is my freelance course you can compete even in New York City with people in Bangladesh it's it's a whole video and I could do but you can do that but so compare that versus local job so here's the advantage when you go on those sites I could up work or whatever freelance comm you can just check out jobs are available and you can just say okay yes I'll bid on this I'll bid on that it's a great way by the way to do your first couple free be Giggs just develop some experience and some reputation I talk about reputation as being one of the key assets you can develop going forward reputation is huge huge huge having a good rep so one way to get a rep to build a rep is to do some work on one of these sites because you can build your profile there so you can take the first couple of jobs small jobs for free as a training experience remember a lot of people will go to boot camps and pay all kinds of money because there's because they say well I'm gonna get a stash work I'm gonna go they're gonna place me in some place where I can work for free well you don't need to go to a boot camp to do that you can just do it on your own right you do my foundation training you couple of cover couple my project courses and then boom you can go on one of these freelance sites and just say this ah you got a little job to do like you know whatever tool we're pressing or do this PHP thing whatever it is just you say okay I'll do it for free I'm learning I'll do it free and you get some takers and then you're gonna learn learning to code or Unreal projects with real clients is a part of the training it's part of the training whether it's not your end goal to become a freelancer or work for a company it's still very good training so that's how I would look at these freelance opportunities these freelance sites they give you an opportunity to just get in real quick to do those free gigs yeah but in terms of making money you have to it's a bit more involve the process you have to again develop really good reputation develop really optimized highly optimized workflows so that even though you have to compete against India because you've got a great reputation and great optimized workflows you can't compete maybe that's another story so the downside is you have to put these sites you have to compete with the world the upside with those sites is that they're all the jobs are right there it's kind of like online dating right if you go to plenty of fish or whatever houses there the swipe left right one there you know what I'm talking about anyway that's like that app it looks pretty good oh look all these these women every day all these guys his ex-wife's you know you just it's all there it's a lot easier to go you know I swipe left to right on the girls or the guys you like there without having to be brave and ask them not a problem with that you have to compete with so many people and it's difficult now for women of course you know I've seen women in absolument eight they'll get like you know they'll put up their profile and they'll get like hundreds of it some messages and guys that you know they may get one message every six months depending you know but that's no story so it's the same dynamic so if you go for local business you have much less competition and because it's a local business you very likely social small businesses who want to deal with people overseas because they don't trust it they don't know they don't how to deal with them they don't know how to assess anything so a lot of small businesses they'd rather deal with local town because they can actually communicate with them right they can communicate with them in their language there is a cultural alignment as well so but you have to go out there and put yourself out there so what I suggest that people do is first do your foundations one or two projects then do a couple of freebie contracts whether it be local or use one of those online sites and then I would start cultivating both you know both online and if you can cultivate local business cultivate that as well so the downside with cultivating local business you have to get out of it you can't you have to get out of your place right you can't just go on the computer and launch bits at at projects but when you do local chances are are much higher but you're going to convert when you find somebody and chances are you'll be able to get what you want even without sophisticated pricing strategies you can just because everybody's you know dealing with the local currency at the local levels right so there's pros and cons that anything it's kind of like online dating versus is asking women out at a gym you train at or at a yoga studio train at at a martial arts studio your trainer whatever it is you know your percentage-wise you're gonna get much more much better results if you just approach women in the real world and if I've got a woman most women don't have to approach guys you know because they're getting hit on every two seconds but you know I'm just assuming speaking mostly the guys here so you're much better off percentage-wise to start just learning dealing interacting with women around you all the time in person as opposed to online dating most of the time and I would argue that if you get local businesses as contracts there's there's certain advantages to that as well you meet people face-to-face the currency and level of income is relative to each other you you know because they're local is less chance that you can get some but you can't you'll be screwed by in terms of payment etc etc so I look at both options as complementary as complementary I know some people have said very good structures for online so they have a huge swath of clients that's the right word a bunch of clients online through freelance sites and they make a lot of money but they have good workflows in place so that they can maximize their time and compete worldwide but well here's what happens once you find a good client and you've done good work for them they will want to come back to you because finding a good developer is like finding a needle in a haystack as they say they'd rather deal with somebody they know so than else and they become much less price conscious and much more quality of work conscious anyway this is a generalization depends on the individual of course so there you go so it's online ease of access but lots of competition so you have to have more sophisticated in advanced pricing mechanisms and workflows and local less lot less numbers not as easy to access local business because you've got to actually start talking to people for real but I think healthier in a way I think there's advantages there in terms of pricing much less competition and it's also much more likely you're gonna get paid etc because they could you can come and visit them right so there you go I look at them as potentially complimentary and you can decide depending on how you want to work which one is best for you if you're in San Francisco with super high rents you have a reality of to contend with there versus if you are in India or you're in Pakistan or something then you have a lower cost of living there we go because you have a lower cost of living you can compete more easily without necessarily having to have a sophisticated pricing and workflow to strategy in place alright that's it for today's emails bye bye
