[Music] did you know that many famous books are actually in the public domain this means that you can use the text and the pictures for your art projects even commercial art projects yes it's true you can use the original pictures from books like the wizard of oz and famous fairy tales for your art project this includes t-shirts coffee mugs high-end prints whatever you want to make and sell let's take a look at some free vintage children's illustrations hey there i hope you're having a great day let's go jump into some vintage children's illustrations that are free and legal so if you're on google you can just type this in now i'm going to put the link in the video below in the description but you can just type in loc free to use and reuse and what loc is is the library of congress so when you click that little loc free to use and reuse you wind up with this first result it's the library of congress.gov loc.gov and it's free to use and reuse sets so what this means is these are digital collections that are free to use and reuse the library believes that the content is either in the public domain or has no known copyright or it's been cleared by the copyright owner for public use so if you see it on this page the library of congress is saying go for it you can use it and reuse it now i know people get really hung up on copyrights based on the comments that we get in the in the videos which is great because that means that people are still ethical and we're trying to play by the rules so i love that so please when you're using these designs know that you can always link back to this website so if someone emerges from the mist and says to you hey you're violating copyright agreement blah blah you can go right to the library of congress website and say no as i scroll down i can see that there's children's books available inside this collection so as i scroll on down it's not a huge collection but over on the right hand side there's this little a apple pie free to use and reuse classic children's books i'm going to click on that these are free to use now i watch youtube and i read comments on youtube and some people just don't believe that this is public domain what happens is they see something like the wonderful wizard of oz and i'm going to click this one here in just a second but they look at it and they go there's no way that's public domain and people just don't believe it the original book is in the public domain not the movie the movie is trademarked by a movie studio so the book is public domain three little pigs is public domain yes this is the big one people look at this and go are you telling me snow white is in the public domain actually yes a lot of disney properties are actually in the public domain it does not mean that you can use the disney images the disney images are trademarked the disney films are trademarked but the underlying book is not trademarked it's public domain humpty dumpty is in the public domain jack in the beanstalk public domain and of green gables people go really and yes and of green gables public domain mother goose public domain so i'm going to go up here to the top and i'm going to click on the wonderful wizard of oz i want to see what happens what happens is a book pops up it's the actual book so i'm just going to make this bigger so you can see it this is the scan of the actual book okay so you can just zoom in on yours on your browser or i can go back to 100 percent on my browser here and i can just use the little zoom button on the left hand side as well the zoom fifty percent zoom 100 so this is the actual scan of the original book everything in this book is public domain so you could make a poster for example call it the wonderful wizard of oz take this picture and you're from you're fine like it's public domain and people do this a lot here's the actual scan of the book and as we scroll down i'm just using mozilla i'm just looking through like my browser and look at that image isn't that wonderful you could easily take that image you could just remove this text inside of photoshop or some sort of some sort of vector software and you can make a birthday card a friendship poster something beautiful as i scroll through again these are the actual scans of the actual pictures there's a beautiful picture there that you could use there's the tin man again you could take this and just remove the copyright piece oh i wanted to mention this is another piece that freaks people out so they're they're looking through the book that it says it's public domain and they see a copyright and they go oh no copyright i'm going to get you know the police are going to come to my house this is copyright 1899 no that's not a typo 1899 it's over 100 years old so what this means is eventually copyrights expire and when i say eventually it's it's different for every country so for example in canada it's the death of the author plus i believe it's 70 years in the states i think it's the death of the author plus 50 years in some countries it's the death of the author plus 90 years anyway i'm sorry if i got the exact years wrong but my point is if it's a hundred years you're good and so what you can do is actually google what came into the public domain in whatever year i'm actually going to do that right now i'll show you how this works so i'm going to go into google and i'm going to type in what is public domain 2021 and this will give you a treasure trove of what will enter the public domain in 2021 there's just all sorts of like guides and even wikipedia has got it here 2021 in the public domain and it'll tell you exactly why so i'm going to click on the wikipedia article as we go down the rabbit hole here entering the public domain in countries with life plus 70 years entering the public domain in countries with life plus 80 years entering the public domain with countries life plus 50 years australia united states and you're going to scroll on down and you can see all of these works are going to be entering the public domain so it's kind of funny some people call new year's day january the 1st public domain day and they spend january the first like literally pulling things off the internet like edgar rice burroughs for example tarzan you know they look at stuff like this and they go holy moly you mean you know certain tarzan certain sherlock holmes certain high-end public domain stuff comes into the public domain on certain years so i just wanted to show that that there is source to what i'm saying here i'm not just like pulling this out of the fog so you can see here this says copyright 1899 i love this vintage image you could easily run this through vector software and make this a high quality res scan and then you could update this with whatever custom information you wanted because there's literally a little sign there that says that and as we continue to scroll down you're going to see there's other vintage images here here's the scarecrow for example here's the witch no it's all white but that's pretty cool too these are beautiful illustrations here's the little house tornado the cyclone and as we scroll through you're going to see that there's also text there's dorothy the text itself is also in the public domain so if you have like a quote like we're not in kansas anymore or you know whatever oh don't pull the dog on the ear i guess if he's surviving a cyclone you've got to do what you got to do so my point is if you wanted to say take this picture and put a quote underneath it from the book that's legal you can actually publish the book either it's an entirety or pieces of it if that's what you would like to do i think this is actually a really high quality scan and you know some of the images are a little bit light like these are backgroundy images but some of them are really quite spectacular and i can only imagine how much an original copy of this book is worth there's another beautiful little picture there so there's lots of vintage images inside of this website that you can use i'm going to go back to the beginning i'm going to pick something else here okay so as i scroll on through let's pick for example baseball okay this is baseball abc i'm going to pick this and this is a color children's book that is old enough that it's now entered the public domain copyrighted 1885 by the mclaughlin brothers so this is a great old-timey baseball so if you're making like prints for a children's room or t-shirts or if you're just making like designs here's old vintage typeface so you could just take an m for example and you could scan it and there's your old vintage m here's old vintage letters and what this book is is for every letter they've got a little story so a is for arthur b is for ball bat and bass c is for catcher and i'm not going to go through the whole alphabet but you get the idea right so as i scroll through here you can see there's different ones so what i really like about this is if you're making vintage looking designs for say a children's room well you could in theory just get rid of the text you could use free photoshop cloning tool or removal tool clean that up and then you can just have this as your vintage image put that on a poster and now any kid in the world whose name starts with an e might want that picture or f or g and you get the idea so again these are nice high quality vintage images that are sitting for free on the library of congress i really encourage you to take a look through these and find what works for you these children's books are just one of a tiny snippet of the things that are free to use and reuse on the library of congress's website i hope you found that helpful as always i do welcome comments down below and questions that sort of thing and thanks a lot for watching
