Marcus Russell story I think this one's been told before I think people know this one but I think I'll revisit it the story that I think was just hilarious and it just kind of goes to show you what happened with JaMarcus Russell he got drafted in 2007 and I remember I it was a time where we just knew like JaMarcus Russell was like how is this guy suposed to lead our friends I saw every year there's what we've seen Ricky shows correct right right more like the rookie show is like hey every you know all the rookies go up there and you do a skit or whatever it may be sure so I remember that JaMarcus Russell wasn't a part of the rookie show because he held out remember he held out the entire training camp right so here we are getting ready for the 2007 season we don't have our first overall pick because he's holding out and then finally they get the deal done one of the richest deals in history he's you know the big bonus and all of that and so you know Marcus you got to have a rookie show you got to have a rookie show alright so I remember the day he comes up he walks in and he has his backpack all right what what kind of skit is he gonna do you know here's our quarterback of the future what is he gonna do and so we're all sitting there like we can't wait what kind of our you know on edge what is he gonna do what is he gonna do and I remember he pulls out I would say at least $5,000 in ones in cash and literally made the entire meeting room rain I mean he throw dollars long I mean it was just lighted I didn't even look back at what the coaches were doing I was just the one picking up all the money I mean literally I was picking up I think I may have grabbed at least probably 120 bucks easily I mean it was I got free haircut you know I keep the haircut I've said pretty much thank you Jamarcus so that's the first sign of we like oh we knew something was he kind of knew is another funny story I remember was the and this what kind of couple guys that you probably may know are still in NFL circle so our quarterbacks coach at the time is the offensive coordinator currently for the Minnesota Vikings brand-new John D Filippo the guy who I love watch just Super Bowl is the quarterbacks coach with the Philadelphia Eagles and I remember the story as was told to me was coach D Filippo said look Jamarcus we've got about 15 20 plays that we want for this week here's a DVD for you tonight we want you to watch these okay because tomorrow these are what we go on this is what we're gonna go with the game plan but we feel like these are the best for you and what your skill set can do so you look at these plays and then tomorrow we're gonna you tell me which ones you like which ones you don't like so Jamarcus is like cool he takes the DVD so the next day they come to practice you know come to the facility say hey Jamarcus hey how's that DVD did you look at what he's a coach all the place I'm good whatever you want to run this dude I like him I said okay which ones you like five of them do you like six of them how much you like coach whatever I saw him that we good we ready to go I can do them all and coach D flip oh it's kind of looking around and was like it was a blank DVD so he didn't watch the DVD but yeah he told every why should I do and that's when I think they kind of knew like oh we're in trouble so that was two stories on JaMarcus Russell avenged and Lane Kiffin was your head coach right yeah I had lain for 16 games yes and how's my head coach for 16 game and how was that experience re 20 games I mean it was 20 games alright yeah it was 16 and then he had the for the following year so 2007 in the overhead projector method and then the 76 yard field goal from Sebastian Janikowski was kind of like the the walk-off move that he had yeah so I remember the exact at that time that you know it was going to our by week two so that's what happened we started off two and two in 2007 were like oh we got this thing moving but in 2008 it was just you could just feel like the tension in the room like the tension in the facility was just different because here you had this young a head coach in Lane Kiffin who got the opportunity and you had this you know patriarch and Al Davis right I mean when mr. Davis walked through you knew probably by the sense of his Cologne for sure but but it was also because this was a guy who was all in on football and he wanted to do things the Raider Way and Lane Kiffin was trying to do it his way and when you have that tussle that that struggle going back and forth you knew that the overhead projector was gonna come out at some point and that overhead projector came out yeah what did you make of that what do you remember from that day I just remember that you know you know mr. Davis is a great man gave me my opportunity to play the National Football League I loved all our interactions and talking with him great football mind but I think it was to a point where Lang was trying to take the Raiders into a different atmosphere and I don't know if he was mature enough at that time and mr. Davis one of those things done his way that way and if you didn't do it it was just you had to go and so I was with the Raiders for five years I played for four different head coaches Oh so every single year was something new with the Rich Eisen show weekdays at noon eastern on audience
