advertising is a slimy business for decades marketers have been using your emotions against you to get you to buy their products so it shouldn't come as a shock to see a few bold claims here and there on billboards or commercials but even with its manipulative nature advertising has its limits throughout history some ads have cranked it up a notch taking it too far that they have to be taken down do you remember any of these banned advertisements tipolette before cigarette advertising was banned tobacco companies were no strangers to making bold and outlandish claims in their advertisements in order to get customers to buy their brand some even claim to be recommended by doctors for their health benefits tipolette is no exception but what this cigarette company claims to do for its smokers is far more enticing attracting the opposite sex tipolette gained recognition in the late 1960s for its typolette cigarette brand and its controversial promotional campaigns the company launched a marketing campaign that revolved around couples indulging in smoking the most recognizable of these ads was a Magazine advertisement spanning an entire page that features a pair of attractive young models a man and a woman the tagline for the ad read blow in her face and She'll follow you everywhere ads like these were a dime a dozen pre-1970s a time when cigarettes were still allowed to be glamorized this vintage print advertisement for triplet cigarettes aims to Leverage The Once alluring and seductive appeal associated with smoking the primary target audience for this advertisement is men and the underlying strategy revolves around positioning tipolette cigarettes as a symbol of power and attractiveness capable of captivating women's attention the advertisement conveys an attitude suggesting that by exuding a sense of coolness and confidence while blowing smoke into a woman's face she'll be drawn to the person displaying such characteristics ultimately leading to a connection or romantic involvement since the ban on Tobacco advertising it is rare to encounter advertisements like triplets and for valid reasons the recognition of smoking as a hazardous habit with potentially fatal consequences has led to a shift in societal attitudes but apart from that the ad is also seen as sexist and an objectification of women because of its implication that women are subservient to men there are many more ads from this time that won't sit well with the women of today this includes a Schlitz beer ad that shows a young couple in a kitchen the wife crying while holding a burning pan to reassure her her husband tells her don't worry darling you didn't burn the beer or a Kellogg's pep vitamin ad of another young couple with the wife holding a duster while wearing an apron her husband hugs her from behind apparently impressed with his wife's cleaning skills the tagline goes so the harder a wife works the cuter she looks but maybe one of the worst ads in existence comes from love cosmetics their questionable advertisement features an image of a young girl all dolled up holding a teddy bear with her lips pouted while gazing in an inappropriate manner the caption because innocence is sexier than you think the ad says that using Love's Baby Soft will give its consumers mostly adult women soft and alluring skin but what the company didn't account for was that the depiction of a young girl with makeup and an arguably suggestive pose is going to be frowned upon by the public but it wasn't only full-grown adults who were ridiculed by advertisers as 7Up would show you how to do so with babies 7Up is soda safe to drink for babies I'm pretty sure that if you knew anything about anything you would say no but if he asked seven up they would tell you otherwise in fact they might even sell you on the idea that their soda will help babies drink their milk in the 1950s 7-Up ran an ad that featured thirsty looking baby drinking from their soda bottle With a Little Help from Mom of course the poster claims that they have the youngest customers in the business adding to the point by writing the following this young man is 11 months old and he isn't our youngest customer by any means for 7UP is so pure so wholesome you can even give it to babies and feel good about it if you read further you'll see that 7Up even encourages moms to lace their infant's milk with a little bit of their drink so that their little bundles of Joy guzzle their breakfast down what an outrage it would be if these ads aired today if you're enjoying this blast from the past so far show us some love by giving this video a like and be sure to stick around because the next one will shock you even more than the first two now back to the video Lloyd Manufacturing Company believe it or not there was a time when cocaine was a widely accepted substance used for medical purposes so it comes as no surprise that there were quite a few cocaine advertisements in existence if only the folks back then knew how horrible some of these products were in a seemingly playful and innocent ad from 1885 to Children building a small stick house in a yard are seen up front to promote cocaine toothache drops available at a pharmacy in Albany New York the poster by Lloyd Manufacturing Company emphasizes how cheap the drops are priced at 15 cents while promising an instantaneous cure for toothaches around this time the ad was launched cocaine was popularly used among dentists to numb your gums and pulling out a tooth to make it happen this was all they needed to do according to an 1894 article when the gums are swollen and tender paint two or three times two minutes apart with a four percent solution of cocaine follow those steps and your local dentist can pull your aching tooth out no problem during the late 1800s cocaine was regarded as a potential option for local anesthesia and after the white powder started making a name for itself as an effective anesthetic during the 1880s it swiftly found its way into all kinds of medicinal products in proprietary tonics in the United States the white stuff was readily available without a prescription until 1914 before the 20th century regulations did not ask manufacturers of pre-packaged remedies to disclose the ingredients used in their medicines because of the lack of systemized testing to verify the validity of their extravagant assertions companies were at Liberty to make any claims they wanted to companies like Lloyd Manufacturing Company were free to advertise products containing cocaine taking advantage of the Public's tendency to be swayed by persuasive marketing tactics to sell these cocaine toothache drops it also helped their case that medicinal professionals used it too but since being labeled as a dangerous drug cocaine ads were thankfully White from existence now only left to be looked back on as a time of unsupervised marketing advertisers would not stop there Sega sega's advertising for the Mega Drive console was bold and it is astonishing to think that they were able to get away with it among the most well-known advertisements is one that doesn't beat around the bush the tagline says the more you play with it the harder it gets it is written in a suggestive manner hinting at the idea of a player's engaging in a stimulating activity the smaller text in the ad pushes the idea even further mentioning activities like squeezing knob and shooting all over the place similarly the ad campaign for the Sega Game Gear featured another provocative reference that plays on the idea that choking the chicken makes you lose your eyesight to the left of the ad is a drawing of a man in his birthday suit facing away from us his hands seemingly occupied with something to the right it is revealed that the naked man is playing his video game his nether regions barely covered by the controller it reads something to do with your hands that won't make you go blind so which of these banned ads do you remember seeing or better yet which one actually made you buy the product tell us about it in the comments below and if you enjoyed the video please consider subscribing to the
