hey guys mr. macaque are here with the mechanical hack for you this is a 1968 Ford 3400 industrial tractor pretty much all for tractors around this era from model numbers two thousand to four thousand if they have power steering we'll have this set up in this issue if it has power steering it's gonna have this mess down here of lines otherwise this piece would bolt straight to here and you would be missing this piece if you do not have power steering so the leak or a complaint or reason the guy sold this tractor was fluid would run out from under the steering wheel and dump all over your lap hence the rag there and all the videos show this whole assembly coming off and a lot of work to get this off your cowling obviously pull the steering wheel I ruined my brand-new steering wheel puller doing so but I got it loose there are two bolts there which hold it here two on the opposite side and then there's two that go let's see right here when it's all together which is actually up under here so six bolts and you can just pick the cowling up and set it out of the way enough to do what we're doing you do not have to take this loose if you take this piece up which if you watch as I turn it so that cork screws out of there there are a bunch of check valves ball bearings and all kinds of crap that's gonna come loose in there mine's not leaking down there it's actually leaking this shoulder right here is where a seal see if I can get you some like there we go that seal which I have changed there's a little spring around that you can kind of see it right there so the original one will wear out and that spring will run a groove on this shoulder and a new seal will not seal up the guy we bought the tractor from had changed the seal but he didn't know what he was doing and this is a sleeve kit I am NOT a fan of sleeve kits you cannot tell me that fluids not gonna leak through that I can see right through it through that seam there so this is supposed to replace that shoulder and it was not on properly it was sitting up higher and he'd turned the wheel and it would fall and kink that seal and fluid would come out by the gallons even though there's not even a gallon in there when you messed with the steering wheel and I'd pop rattle back up and then quit leaking and start getting again take this sleeve off do not put it back in do not get a sleeve kit sand this rod down get all the loose rust you can see the pitting if there's pitting down here the fluid will go behind the sleeve and bypass the whole point of the repair sand this down marine-grade jb will cover it let it dry for a day sand it back down until it's perfectly smooth if you can feel anything it's gonna leak once you cannot feel anything it should not leak marine-grade jb weld is resistant to petroleum so there shouldn't be any issues it is sandable and it bonds very well once you get this the way you want it if that seals good everything from there up is dry that's a bare rod it will rust right flakes of rust will fall down and mess that seal up rub this an axle grease so that it doesn't do that so we're gonna put it all together and that brings me to hack number two what I do with it well there's no ring around here somewhere give me a sec sorry the dog had it so there is another ring like this down here and then this one sits up here did you set this here it needs to go right there and it just slides back down and you're never gonna get it where it's supposed to be by the way if you're ordering parts before doing this you can order do these and then this seal here and I'll show you that part number at the end of the video and it's a good idea to change both of these neither of these two were leaking and I did not purchase them so here's my hack for you see the groove same thing once you pick it up and you set it down over the column it's gonna fall and you're not gonna be able to keep it in place that's a dab of axle grease near each bolt hole to make sure that doesn't come out of the groove and get caught in the bolt tada the grease will hold it in there right kind of rub the excess around and help keep it moisturized I'm gonna stick a little on this lip just to help it slide on but that's your repair there and I wanted to cover that because everyone shows way more work than was necessary and ultimately sand that down jb weld sand it again until it's smooth and you'll be good for another 40 years
