hi folks and welcome to the truck king youtube channel today we have a battle of epic proportions this might as well be coke versus pepsi or mcdonald's versus burger king that's because we're looking at ford versus chevrolet and specifically the f-150 tremor versus the silverado zr2 we're gonna head off-road and find out which one is better [Music] [Music] and now it is time folks to head off road now the one thing i want to point out right off the bat you probably just saw it the price both of these trucks are 86 000 here in canada so yeah today we are finally comparing trucks with the identical price now i will shut the parking sensors off right away in the last video yes i'm aware that the sensors just wouldn't shut up so we're doing the ditch crossing right now with the tremor and i'm four high i'm absolutely trying to creep my way through i am rubbing in the front but it's climbing but it's climbing and we've run that ditch crossing quite a few times now so we've definitely rutted it out but you know what it was rubbing there in the front end and it just climbed right on through and now here we are in the chevy and the first thing i'll tell you is there's not as many driving modes here in the chevy ford has normal snow mud and ruts the chevy has normal off-road and terrain mode and terrain mode is basically their one pedal drive so i'm going to avoid that for now and i'm just in off-road mode for high let's creep in here and see what happens i also have my rear end locked up in the forward when i put it in the mud and rutz mode it automatically locked here in the chevy i had to do it i'm in the exact same spot i was with the tremor let's see what happens nice yeah i mean it was dragging rear end and dragging some nose there but both of the trucks were able to drag themselves through no questions asked i thought maybe the torsion front differential on the forward would make a difference but on that one it did i just mentioned the front torson limited slip differential here in the ford now of course i think the front locker is a better solution than a limited slip but the beauty of the limited slip is i don't have to touch anything it will do all of its work on its own without any special instructions or modes needed so i'm in four high rear end is locked and actually before i continue i'm going to unlock my rear end yeah unlocked i want to feel the torsion so rear is unlocked now and i'm about to start spinning right about here nice and you can feel it you can absolutely feel what's getting me through is not the rear end shifting power it's the front end sending that power and then pulling me through and you can actually even hear the torsion doing its thing as it kind of binds up it makes a bit of a grinding noise and you can hear it working so like i said i think that the front locker is a bit of a better solution in terms of hardcore off-road situations but for just everyday driving the torsion is nice because you never have to worry about it let's go jump into chev now and see how it does okay identical setup here in the chevy four high unlocked off-road mode and let's just try to creep through just creep just wanna creep really test her out uh oh see in the zr2 in the zr2 it was traction control i i started spinning will it spin again on me nice just enough so yeah it started spinning you could see it spun for quite a bit longer than the ford did and that's because what was happening was traction control was breaking the wheel that was spinning to send the power over so yeah the chevy took longer to respond now if the zr2 had been fully locked up before i went in there it would have just walked right through but again i think that's a fair point in the ford's favor is that that torsion is always ready to work and you don't have to turn anything on or off and actually my front differential here in the chev i can't lock it unless i'm in four low so that's another big advantage over in the forward and four high that torsion is always working for me up front whereas here in the chevy i have to be in four low enable to to be able to access both my lockers hey you yes you watching this truck king video do you like power sports things like atvs side-by-sides personal watercraft or snowmobiles well how about rvs well then you're in luck because we just started a brand new channel called tk powersports and rvs from now on all of that content is going to live on the new channel and all of the amazing truck content will stay right here so go below right now into the description find the link to the new channel and hit subscribe today okay everybody we're out of the meadow now it's time to tackle the hydra line and some water and it has been raining quite a bit so there is some water up here oh and some big rocks nice and wow the suspension on the zr2 man it really does show itself right away you start knocking into those big rocks and big ruts and it just keeps you nice and smooth now into the deep stuff i've got her in four low i've got nothing locked up and you know what i'm gonna run it in just off-road mode here we go now we have had a zr2 up here before but it's always a little bit different every time you get out here and here we go oh man this thing sounds so good down in four low and oh cool so i actually have an off-road readout which tells me which wheels are slipping here that was pretty neat and now i come up our little rock crawl here i stay a little bit driver's side a little bit driver's side nicely done chevrolet it just ate that up like it was no big deal these tires the goodyear territories uh great set of all-terrain tires really have found zero faults with them so far they've managed to do everything well we're turned around now as we come back down the hill it is worth mentioning chevrolet has hill descent control and they also have terrain mode which is like their one pedal drive but they actually don't have an off-road cruise control ford has trail control chevy hasn't done that there is no flat ground system that's actually going to drive the vehicle for you could they have done it i'm sure they could have why haven't they done it i don't know if this is true but i hope it's a philosophy difference maybe chevrolet just doesn't believe in having one of these types of off-roading systems me personally i say this a lot the systems are excellent these days they really are amazing and they can do things i can't do like break an individual wheel however if i'm just out here for fun i don't want to use them because they're not that fun they take the fun out of it although that hill descent was really slow and really smooth and then you get down to the bottom and away we go again oh i actually hit another rock in there that rock is getting deeper or shallower and shallower as we've hit it every single time now coming through the pit she feels good sounds amazing man you cannot beat this borla exhaust and 6.2 liter v8 it is a really solid match so feeling good about the chevy let's go get the ford see how it does and back in the tremor now it's time for the hydra line so the first thing you notice is you jump in and it asks you hey do you want to go back into mud and ruts or back into the mode you were just in i think that's a smart feature now i'm actually in for low right now with nothing locked up just like i was in the chev and man the power is right there too power is not an issue i'll tell you what though the v8 sounds glorious and four low and this ecoboost kind of just sounds like nothing so no doubt that the v8 sounds better and then let's feel it with a bit of speed here oh yeah see so when you get a bit of speed up in this tremor and you start hitting things harder it hits them hard it stays stiff this truck whereas the zr2 has a really nice tendency to get just soft enough that you never feel kind of like you're finding the limit whereas here in the ford you speed up and you get a couple hard hits and you find the suspension limits pretty quickly and now here we go and no issue getting in here tires feel solid not showing any spin oh there's one rock up and over it and now oh over oh that was a rock we didn't hit in the chev on the rock hill here oh oh a little slip there too okay interesting interesting so the clearance differences definitely showed i was tagging a couple things here in the ford that i didn't in the zr2 and then the difference wasn't big but i had a little bit more wheel slip on those exposed rocks up on the rock face down in the mud and down in the water uh it didn't feel like it was spinning very much but it's always kind of hard to tell when you're in there but on that hill i could definitely feel that these tires were struggling a little more to find the traction than they were in the zr2 all right now we're turned around coming back down the hill and again i want to use the off-road systems so we don't have just hill descent control we have forged trail control i've got it turned on it does let you set the speed by 0.5 kilometer an hour increments i do like that you can get really specific so i have it set at 2.5 kilometers per hour and it is just nice and slowly walking me down this hill equally as quiet and smooth and calm as chevrolet system however again the ford system will drive me all the way through my mud pit all i got to do is start hitting this oof oof more rocks more rocks oh man yeah the chev the clearance is better so as i get into the water here i crank up my speed five six seven eight nine nine and a half kilometers an hour and so the ford's doing it all i have my foot off the gas off the brake this is all f-150 the zr2 will not do this and the tremor will so there is something to be said for especially if you're new to off-roading the tremor is going to help you out a little bit more than the chevy is and look it does a heck of a job and the one thing it does which is a hard thing to do off-road is to stay uber smooth and to not be jerky at all that's something that comes with time off road and if you like i said if you're new to it and you just want to let the truck keep you nice and smooth well i got to tell you that trail control really is extra smooth so there's one system there that the ford has the chevy doesn't and man they both did that really well i think it's time to hit the left hook to see if that doesn't separate the two uh a little bit more let's go see how it works now we can look underneath the silverado first of all big exposed tow hooks right in the front end then you roll back and you get to this a nice beefy skid plate and that extends beyond that front differential now up in here i'll show you those are the multimatic shocks and the rear in the front end and they're hilarious because they're so short and chubby and they really do a nice job now moving back we get to the next skid plate which is right there that's to protect your transfer case over here you'll see the optional borla exhaust and we'll let you hear that in a minute and then one of the things that surprises me there's no protection right here on the gas tank that thing is just hanging out there now at the back end at the corners you'll see those massive multimatic shocks and finally yes that is a full-size spare tire and now ladies and gentlemen the tremor is up on the truck ramp so i can show you underneath of it first of all up here in the front end really nice exposed tow hooks and then a beefy skid plate that's the very first one you get to i love that right where that plate ends another one begins to protect your differential now as we roll back there's more protection here although this is not really anything heavy duty at all might just be sound proofing honestly next up skid plate right there for the transfer case i appreciate that and then the fuel tank actually gets a plastic skid plate not a steel skid plate still nice protection there now down there at the rear end it looks like a standard setup those are just the unique shocks that you get on the trimmer and if i could show you the front torson diff i would but of course it is fully covered up but overall everything is tucked up nicely down here and we'll see if anything gets hung up once we go off-road and now folks to really get to the bottom of this one we're here on the left hook and we've had a bunch of rain lately so there's a lot of water here so let's get across these ruts see how my drop is yeah that's okay sticking with four high nothing locked up because i don't think i need to be let's see how it feels and i'm gonna try to keep it slow today big hole there so okay so far so good i'm down in the ruts i gotta get a bit of speed i'm too nervous coming through here and now let's see oh i'm stuck in the ruts let's see how it transitions like nothing like butter like honestly that was really good zr2 and now i'm going to try to just creep up this hill we got all these loose rocks down on the passenger side i'm gonna get right over them oh we did have some slippage there but not much at all and we're up man this zr2 is good it really is good the the tires are there the grip is there when you need it i wasn't trying to use too much momentum there and mostly that was just tires sucking me through power feels good that was in four high so i had to dig it into it a little bit more of course than in four low but uh yeah i can't find anything to complain about that's for sure everything here in this chev just feels right out here in the forest and now time for the tremor so i did put it into mud and ruts mode now that automatically locks my rear end i unlocked it i shouldn't need my lockers here i didn't lock up the chevy so i won't lock up the ford now this got through the intro turn there no problem and away we go in the tremor now same thing i don't want to i don't want to go too fast once i get into the middle i get a little nervous i got to bring a little bit of speed but stuck down in these ruts so far so good let's see what happens right here on the transition it definitely slid a little bit more driver's side than i expected it to but the tires coming through the middle there had grip oh my rear end oh i'm spinning yep i'm spinning and i got four-wheel spin right now four-wheel spin wow well you gotta say it the tires here are not as good let's see if i just lock up the rear end if that's enough to get me through so now rear end locked no you know what i'm just i need to bump up onto this rock so i'm just going to back it up like that and boom i just had to hit it a little bit see a little bit of momentum was the key but uh that goes to show you i think we can chalk that up pretty much purely to tires these general grabbers they're just not as good they seem to cake up with mud uh quicker than the tires over there in the chev so yeah when it comes to rubber from the factory the ford tires are just not as good now that's something of course you can rectify and if you were to buy a tremor i would probably recommend getting something other than these generals is the difference huge no it's not huge but it is definitely there so yes the focus of these trucks is off-roading but these are still pickup trucks so they still have to work hard and luckily ford and chevrolet have been adding a lot of new features to the rear ends of their trucks so let's take a look right now first of all here in the f-150 this tailgate can be lowered automatically let me try that again there it is you can do that from a button in the cab and from a button on your key fob now next up and this is nothing new ford still has what is probably the best step in the industry i think just because it comes down nice and low and you get the handle that's right there easy to get to so climbing in and out of this bed really is that simple and then to tuck it away two steps there goes the handle it's gone i do like that setup now the other thing ford has done they spent time here on the tailgate so you can see here you have a ruler so if you have some lumber or something you can actually measure it you have little pockets over here for pencils cell phones nuts and bolts whatever else you might have and then what's really cool is right here board calls these c-clamp pockets so you can actually put a c-clamp in here and that will grab onto the wood or again whatever you're working on they're really trying to make this more of a mobile workstation one other feature we cannot forget that's right down here that is pro power on board that is two kilowatts of onboard power and you get two plugs which you can use it with so that really is handy now another point i need to make is that both of these trucks are here today in the only configuration you can get them and that is crew cab with the short bed and yes the tailgate here on the ford can close on its own now let's take a look at the zr2 over here so first of all you're going to notice we get the bumper steps here on the chevy so it's kind of a different philosophy nothing needs to be folded or taking out those are always ready to go now the other feature we get the multi-flex tailgate i'm sure you guys have seen this but let me show it to you again it's got many positions this is a cool position you get the load stop you can store things kind of high up if you have some long lumber or something you can also use this as a little work station when you're standing back here next up and this is honestly probably the most common configuration i've used that as is just the load stopper open on the open tailgate again if you have lumber if you're hauling things that you're worried might slide out the back put that up and then you don't have to worry and then finally you reach down here you let that inner tailgate out and you get this big monster step now to copy forward gm also put in a handle that's up there and that is probably just as easy to use as the forward step it's definitely a lot wider than the forward step the handle is a little further away but for the most part it's just as convenient now looking inside of this bed i will say that the chevy bed has better tie downs you can see them right away you get three individual hard tie down points in every single corner in the forward you only actually get one tie down point in every corner now on the flip side here in the chevy you only get 400 watts of power and just a single plug whereas the f-150 kind of blew this thing away with that two kilowatts so a lot more power in the ford better tie-downs here in the chev uh you know the ford tailgate does a few things the chevy's does it and vice versa it's hard for me to pick a winner here they both have really cool features in the back end so why don't you tell me just based on the beds which truck would you take well folks we are off the trails now and a lot of the times when we do these off-road comparisons that's all we look at is just how the vehicles perform off-road and we forget about everything else today we're doing it a little bit differently and i want to say it's mostly because these two are so close off-road i think you probably saw it from behind the lens dad the chevy did things just a little bit easier it cleared a couple rocks that the ford hit and then the tires just straight up had better traction but the ford still did everything that the chevy did so with all of that in mind we wanted to come out here and go for a drive on road and talk a little bit more about what the trucks are like to live with every day and what they're like to tow with because we have towed with both of these trucks now my take away on the tremor here dad is that it doesn't really give up well almost anything in order to get the uh the off-road you know goodness that we have here to get the tires and the suspension and all that you still have 10 900 pounds of towing 1400 pounds of payload yeah i don't see the downside going for the tremor package do you want me to show you something yeah i was hoping you had a point you're right this feels like pretty much any f-150 out there and you know we're talking about you got to live with this truck seven days a week and i guarantee you're not off-road every day so you know can you get to the mall can you get to work is your wife going to complain about it so space wise excellent seating very very good it's quiet inside it's responsive it handles well all in all that's the thing with trucks today they don't beat you up on road for the qualities that they have off-road so i think straight up this one is a winner yeah and you know what even more so once you hook a trailer up we put our seven thousand pounds behind this truck and like you said it just feels like any other f-150 which is pretty much exactly what you want and uh sadly the same cannot be said for that chevrolet so why don't we uh jump in the chev now and see how it feels fair enough and now we're on road here in the zr2 having some fun with that 6.2 liter man and you know i said this when we were off-road it just sounds so good the ford sounds like nothing it just doesn't really have a sound no character to the engine at all this 6.2 just sounds glorious and we do have the optional borla exhaust and dad even pointed it out when you start this thing up man it barks it really does bark at you it's pretty impressive so uh yeah that's one thing that ford's never gonna get is v8 sound out of their ecoboost but besides that dad let's talk about this truck now driving on road um i think we can agree the suspension setup here is definitely uh more revised over stock than it is in the tremor right we getting we're getting the multimatic shocks here which are totally different from what comes on the stock silverado and when you're off-road what that results in is a fairly smooth ride even when you're really pounding on it and then when you're on road i don't think it's as close to a standard silverado as the tremor is to a standard f-150 but it's pretty dang close that's my take it's close but it is a little bit softer and we certainly saw that uh when we were towing yes the 7000 pounds really showed the squishiness right yeah but you know what it's an okay trade-off because the reality is if you're really looking to feel it you can feel it but does it bother you not really so i mean you're buying the zr2 for that particular reason you want to you want to go go fast yeah that's something we can't really do on our trails and around the ontario bush uh but there's parts of the country where frankly yeah pounding this thing you know through the wide open whether it's the prairie or the desert uh you know that's that's pretty cool and i think that's where this this particular truck shines absolutely so yeah trade-offs you know you said it in the trade-offs here i think we've kind of you know found them if you want the high-speed off-roading out of the zr2 you're going to give up a bit of the on-road comfort and the towing and payload if you want the towing and payload out of the f-150 well you're not going to get the high speed off-roading that you do out of the zr2 so i think like usual that it's hard to say one is better than the other what it comes down to is what do you want to do what do you need to tell what kind of off-roading do you want to do and that's how you're going to make your decision well folks we have come to the end of this video and i do think the verdict is pretty clear if you prioritize towing and payload but you still want to have some fun off-road well you want to take an f-150 tremor but if you want to go off-road and have the most fun possible and get into some gnarly spots and you don't care as much about towing well then you want a chevy silverado zr2 and if you're going to ask me which one of these trucks i'm going to spend 86 grand on yeah it's the chevy and i'll tell you why it's because i love going fast off-road and when it comes to these two trucks the chevy is the only one here ready for that high speed off-roading now of course i need to hear from you so please go below into the comments let me know which one of these two trucks you would buy if you had 86 grand and then as always don't forget to come right back here to the channel to see what we are testing next because you never know what it might be see ya [Music] you
