[Music] so i've owned my ford f-150 lightning for about two months now and in that time i've done my 70 mile an hour high range test a ton of dc fast charge recordings and i've also taken it on two pretty long road trips so i'm getting a feel for what i really like and don't like about the truck so i figure it's time for me to tell everybody my top 10 likes and dislikes about the ford f-150 lightning now i do want to point out that not everything that i'm going to mention here today is specific to the fact that it's an electric truck there are some things that i like and don't like that are also shared with the gasoline and diesel versions of the f-150 now if this is your first time here on state of charge please click that subscribe button and ring the notification bell so you don't miss any upcoming f-150 lightning as well as other electric vehicle news and reviews first up let's talk about the top 10 likes now i'm very happy with my f-150 lightning i probably could have listed a lot more so i think i'm going to probably throw in a bonus like at the end all right let's start this off right number one is the power 580 horsepower 775 pound-feet of torque this thing is nuts when you stomp on it you just get thrown back into your seat and really quickly you're going faster than you should be going so you have to be careful when you're driving the lightning i let a friend of mine recently drive it who owns an older model raptor i think it's about five years old ford raptor and he was just going crazy over it he said his raptor never felt anything even close to being as fast as this and the instant torque is what really threw him he just couldn't imagine how you just step on the pedal and you just immediately get thrown back and honestly at low speeds you even get a little bit of wheel spin from the front tires but performance has to be number one this thing is fantastic one of the more well-known automotive news outlets recently track tested a lightning platinum and they came off with 4.0 seconds from 0-60 that's faster than what ford promises and at 12.7 second quarter mile i mean could you imagine a 6600 pound pickup truck stock doing under 13 seconds in the quarter mile it's just nuts so i had to come out of the gate with power the lightning's power is just amazing number two i love the large panoramic glass roof with the power sunshade i have a tesla model 3 and it also has a panoramic glass roof but it doesn't come with any type of sunshade so i had to buy an aftermarket one that kind of clips in place i love it when the big panoramic roofs have automatic sunscreens so you can just press a button and close it up if it's getting too hot in the cabin number three is how smooth it drives the lightning drives incredibly smoothly the independent front and rear suspension really work now it does float a little bit so it doesn't handle say as well as like a rivian r1t does which i've driven uh quite a few times it handles more like a sports car than a pickup truck the r1t the lightning doesn't handle like that it kind of floats along the road but i like that it's a smooth comfortable driving experience and i think ford nailed it with that and number four is how quiet the cabin is the lightning is extremely quiet on the inside even at highway speeds now once you get up over 70 75 miles an hour you're starting to get some more wind noise but at lower speeds it is so quiet and peaceful in here and i've owned many evs in my life and i currently also own a tesla model 3 and my wife recently commented how quiet the lightning was she's been in all the electric vehicles we've owned and she said she thinks it's the quietest one we've ever had and number five might be a surprise for a lot of people but i'm going with the efficiency of the lightning now i've driven it about 2 800 miles so far the equivalent of about two months of driving for me and i'm averaging 2.4 miles per kilowatt hour and recently in the last almost 800 miles that i've driven i've averaged 2.6 miles per kilowatt hour because i haven't done a lot of highway driving recently i really expected my overall average for the truck to be close to two miles per kilowatt hour i've road tested a lot of electric vehicles pretty much everyone that's been made so far and some of them haven't averaged much better than 2.4 2.5 miles per kilowatt hour driving around town running errands combined highway and city use like this truck has done so i'm actually really impressed with its efficiency so far and for number six since we're talking about efficiency i'm going to go with the lightnings brake coach the lightning has a regenerative braking coach that tells you the percentage of your stopping that was done through regen as opposed to using the friction brakes so while i might understand regenerative braking because i've been driving ev so long i think people that are new to evs are really going to appreciate this because it really lets you know how to be most efficient when you stop and how to recuperate as much energy you can without using the friction brakes and for number seven i'm going to say that i love the power liftgate with the step and grab bar i can operate it either with my key fob i can press the button on the tailgate or i can open it and close it from inside the cab it's really convenient now i know this comes on other versions of the f-150 to me this is a game changer because i've never had that convenience to open and close the tailgate like that and on a full-size pickup truck list the tailgate's pretty heavy and i'm not getting any younger so i appreciate that it opens and closes for me and number eight is the mega power frunk i knew i was going to be using this a lot but i had no idea how much i was going to be using it i use it all the time and it's such a great resource for contractors they could store their tools up front they don't have to worry about them getting broken into they don't have to put a lock box in the back of their bed and then climb in to get the tools in and out this is such a convenient location it's got the four power outlets a usb and usb c outlet inside there so you can actually use it as a little work space on a job site the mega power frunk is awesome and i also love that it has a low loading height the rivian r1t has a nice big front also but you've got to lift all your stuff up over the front to get it in with the f-150 lightning this loading height is lower than my waist so it really is convenient to put stuff in and out you don't have to really get it up over that that hump and then try to pull it out if it's heavy the loading is really easy with the lightning and i mean they just nailed it with the frunk it's perfect as it is mega power frunk for the win and for number nine i'm gonna say ford pro power on board there are outlets all over this truck in the front seat in the back seat in the front in the bed everywhere you look there's power outlets and it can offload up to 9.6 kilowatt of power that's 40 amps it has one 240 volt outlet the rest are 120 volt but you can power an entire job site with this if you needed to you can also charge an electric car because ford includes the adapter that you need to plug in a nema 1450 outlet into the back of the vehicle you need an adapter to plug into the outlet then the 1450 plugs into it then you could plug in ford's mobile charger that comes with the lightning and you could charge any electric vehicle you want ford even included a tesla adapter with all of the lightnings that's a total troll move it's totally unnecessary because every tesla comes with that j1772 adapter so tesla cars that were let's say stranded would already have it in the vehicle it was a total troll move on on ford's part but i love it nothing like some fun gameship between competitors and for number 10 i'm going to go with the rear seating room and comfort there is so much room back here it's crazy i mean i'm only 5'8 i'm not really told but look at this room that i have between my legs and even my head there's so much room it's crazy back here i've had three adults back here on a number of occasions and they can't believe how comfortable and spacious it is and i know again that's something that's not specific to the lightning but still this a great place to spend a road trip and for my bonus like i'm going to go with ford's intelligent backup power system now i don't have it installed yet so i really couldn't include it in my likes because i haven't used it it seems really great on paper but until we actually use it i can't really say how much i like it the good news is i have received the system i have it in boxes here i've pulled permits i'm going to start installing in about two weeks and we're going to document all that on videos which you'll be able to watch here on state of charge this video is sponsored by q merit north america's largest network of electric vehicle charging station installation professionals i know you may be tempted to install your own ev charging equipment but i urge you to use a licensed professional to do so working with a 240 volt circuit can be extremely dangerous for non-professionals the wiring may look simple but there are many best practices that electricians follow that the average homeowner doesn't know about and it could come back to haunt you something as small as not using the proper gauge wire nuts for the heavy continuous high amperage load of ev charging can potentially lead to a fire so follow the link in the description of this video and a local q merit electrician will provide you with a no obligation no hassle free estimate okay so next up let's talk about my top 10 dislikes now mind you many of these are just kind of minor annoyances not serious problems but still there's things that ford could definitely improve on the lightning and since i added a bonus like i'll throw in a bonus dislike at the end also all right so number one on the dislikes i'm going to start off with something that's kind of minor but i don't love it so i want to mention it i like the light bar across the front of the lightning but i don't like this opaque white kind of milky plastic look so i think i'm actually going to try to wrap it with a plastic film almost like an auto tint to see if it looks better i'm going to make sure light will still shine through but i just want to tone it down a little bit i also noticed on the lighter colored lightnings i don't mind it as much but on the darker colored vehicles like this black one here it just it contrasts too much and i just don't like the opaqueness of it so i'm going to play around with that and see if i can improve it my second dislike is that there's not always a numeric display of the current state of charge on the driver's display screen now you can get it if you set the driver's display to the calm screen but that's the only screen where it showed in a numeric value now i will note that if you have hands-free blue crews on it does show the state of charge below the blue cruise icon but that's the only time you can get it on the driver's display now you can always find it in the center console in the charge settings it shows the current state of charge but i really like to have the state of charge always displayed on the driver's display and that's something that i actually spoke with ford's darren palmer about recently and asked him if he could add it and he's going to look into it for me uh but in addition to that i also wish that they had the state of charge upon arrival or at least the estimated state of charge upon arrival when you use the navigation screen tesla has that in their infotainment system in their nav system and it works really well you can set your destination you're like okay i'm going to arrive i'm going to have about 14 state of charge and it's relatively accurate i know ford has talked a lot about the accuracy of their range estimator so if it's that accurate give it to us in the navigation system when we plug in a destination show us what our arriving state of charge is going to be and i think that'll give people confidence to go on longer trips now my third dislike is i'm going to say the android auto integration and that's because i seem to have about a fifty percent connection rate half the times i get in the car it says uh android auto connection failed and i have to either plug in my phone or turn the vehicle off turn my phone off turn it back on go through the whole thing for it to connect now i will give ford a little pass on this because it's possible that it's my phone causing the problems i have a new samsung s22 ultra so maybe it's the phone i haven't had problems with it connecting to other devices or my tesla so i'm kind of thinking that it's the lightning but it's really annoying half the times i get my lightning and it doesn't connect for my fourth dislike i'm gonna go with the one pedal driving integration now with the lightning you can set it to have one pedal driving it's a very aggressive regenerative braking where it slows you down really quickly and brings you to a stop and holds the vehicle without you touching the friction brake pedal at all it actually works pretty well but what i'm complaining about is the transition between acceleration and one pedal driving i think it could be made smoother it's kind of clunky when you're in the middle between it regenerative braking and you accelerating when you let off the accelerator for a second and then press the accelerator again the vehicle almost seems like it's confused it doesn't know what to do i think ford could massage the software a little bit better and make that transition between regenerative braking and accelerating back and forth a little bit smoother number five on my dislikes is the driver's sun visor no matter how i position it it has an opening that the sun can shine through on now i can take it and push it all the way to the left side so it's blocking the mirror and kind of have it angled so it closes that gap but then it's in my line of vision and it bothers me i think that this is a big fail and it should be easy enough to make a sun visor that blocks all of the sun and there's no hulls it's really annoying me now on the lightning so for number six i'm going to talk about something that i've heard a lot of other people talk about also now we mentioned how the lightning is so powerful 580 horsepower pound-feet of torque it's really a great performer and we love that and it does have two motors there's an electric motor in the front electric motor in the rear and they share the work just about evenly what we have noticed is when you really stomp on it you give it full acceleration either from a standstill or let's say you're driving up to maybe 15 or 20 miles an hour that front motor really grabs the front tires grab and it almost feels like torque steer the vehicle wants to go in the direction if you're not pointed perfectly straight so you really have to grab the steering wheel hard if you're going to step on it otherwise it's going to try to like pull you i even get wheel spin up to like 35 miles an hour if i'm alone in my lightning and there's no load i don't have any cargo or anything i'm driving 25 30 miles an hour the front wheels give a nice little chirp and when they do that they're trying to pull any way they can if you're not perfectly lined straight the truck's going to try to pull you in that direction so i almost think that they could blend the rear and front motor a little bit differently or even make the rear motor do more work than the front i'm not an engineer i don't know how to fix it but i do know that it's a little annoying and i think it can be improved so for number seven we're going to go inside the car and i'm going to complain about the wireless phone charging pad it's in this really small compartment that has a sliding lid and i can't get my hand in there to place the phone in there or even get it in to pull it out it's really too small it should be redesigned i'd prefer if it was a little tray there like a depressed tray rather than something that has this lid and maybe not have it so deep so you could kind of just drop your phone in and then pick it up the way it is now it's very cumbersome for me to get my phone in and out of there so i've been just using the usb c port and plugging my phone in rather than using the wireless pad because it's such a pain to get it in and out and for my eighth dislike i'm gonna go with an aspect of the center console that bothers me but let me start off by saying i really like the center console the armrest is comfortable i love how the shifter tucks in nice and neatly into the center console and then you can lift the armrest up and it makes a big workspace or a table for your fast food i really like that but what i don't like is when i open the center console the spring that should be holding the armrest up is super weak first of all it barely lifts it open and if i'm driving and i'm trying to get something out of there it's really awkward for me i have to kind of lift it up and hold it with my arm and pop it it doesn't want to stay up you've got to take it and lift it all the way up to get it to stay in place i wish that spring was a little bit stronger so it would lift the armrest up and hold it in place so you can get stuff out of it without having to jockey for position with your elbow to hold the thing up and number nine on my dislike list is that the ford f-150 lightning only comes in this configuration that's the super crew cab with the five and a half foot bed i know the five and a half foot bed is a non-starter for a lot of people especially people in the trades so it really limits the amount of people that could use the lightning now i know that ford understood that they were going to have a limited supply in the beginning and they probably figured you know what just make it this one way because we're going to sell every single one that we can make and they're right in that figuring they really don't need to make other configurations because they can't make enough of these as it is but in the future they need to have different configurations they need a longer bed they need to be able to have every type of use case for the workmen out there because this truck is fantastic for workers this is great for small businesses it's going to save people a ton of money the functionality of pro power on board the low operating cost it's a fantastic truck for businesses but in its current configuration it's not going to work for a lot of use cases i know ford knows that but i had to put this in there because this setup doesn't work for a lot of work environments and finally the last dislike number 10 is availability i know it's not the trucks fault but it's such a shame that anybody who wants a lightning can't just order one and get one now ford took in over 200 000 reservations in a few months when they opened up the reservations last year so they stopped taking orders so if you don't already have a reservation for lightning you can't get one unless you want to pay tens of thousands of dollars over dealer invoice for the few vehicles that some dealers have or buy when used from someone i had somebody on the street a week after i got this offered me a hundred and ten thousand support now i paid eighty thousand dollars and in a week i could have made a 30 000 profit and he actually followed that up when i told him no with okay just humor me name your price and this guy was serious uh but i just think it's a shame that we have such a great truck it's a transformational vehicle this pickup truck is going to change people's minds it's kind of like the model s when it first came out in 2012 how it just proved that electric vehicles can be fun exciting they can go far they can go fast they can charge quickly what the model s did to cars the f-150 lightning is doing now to pick up trucks and i see it firsthand i have a lot of friends that are pickup truck owners and quite honestly they didn't believe me when i told them how good this was going to be but now that they've all had a chance to drive it nearly everyone said like i'd buy this in a second if i could and it's just a shame that we can't fill that demand now this isn't part of the whole global parts supply and supply chain problems this was going to happen anyway ford underestimated how quickly we were going to transition to electric vehicles and they underestimated the demand for the lightning so you know a couple of years ago they didn't order enough batteries and all the components needed to put the lightning really where it should be front and center with the brand they realize that now and they're scaling up it's just unfortunate that not everybody that wants one and can afford one can get one at this point now ford is scaling up and they said by the end of 2023 they'll be at a run rate of about 150 000 lightning a year but quite honestly that's not even enough they should be at 150 000 now and by the end of next year three or four hundred thousand they'd be able to sell that many if they could make that many hopefully they get it together open up some more battery plants build some more factories and get this thing moving because the f-150 lightning is an amazing electric vehicle and i think almost everybody that gets one is going to agree with me and now for my bonus dislike i'm not really happy with the information ford gives you about charging now when the vehicle is charging you don't get information like the amount of kilowatt that the vehicle is taking in the amount of kilowatt hour that it has accepted during that charging session you get the current state of charge you get the time to completion until it's going to be a hundred percent but that's really it ford really should offer more information let the owners see what kind of charging power is coming in and how many kilowatt hour have been added in that charging session i really think it would be an improvement and customers would appreciate it well that's it for my top 10 likes and dislikes of my ford f-150 lightning let me know if you agree or disagree with
