before we get into having a chat with him I'd like you to just watch this piece and then when we come back who's zooming to the man himself stay tuned General Joseph new new Mensa was born in Winnie ba in the 1930s two parents who were fisherfolks as a child he also went into fashion helping his parents and only had the opportunity to enter school for the first time at the age of 13 he was enlisted into the Ghana army in October 1960 and started training at the Ghana military academy midway through the training he was selected to continue his training at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst England where he graduated in 1963 as the best overseas officer cadet on his return after the two-year training is served in various positions in the military rising to become the chief of Defense staff on two separate occasions General Joseph new nomensa would tell the rest of his story on footprints now [Music] welcome back now you know who we are talking about its behavior general new nomensa general new nomensa yo I got confused with the military rank so anyway welcome to the program set salute sir you know we are in organ we see the the you know the whole structure of the military and the discipline and how people who spend their lives in the military even after they're out of the military that's one thing that they keep and doesn't disappear try and you you are you epitomize it in all aspects thank you so much but it's good to be here you're most welcome all of you much welcome thank you sir so is it Brigadier General or General in my time it was Brigadier it was odd that it was me because you know make us a package a general okay yes what British tradition in Ghana here in Bolivia the same rank because a general also I retired as Brigadier but now it's affect us Brigadier General the same thing okay in my time they were maybe not more than three or four the whole armed forces okay we have a lot of us but the most important thing is not the rank as a seat but the position you held that's what me was most important only became chief of Defense which I did 40 years ago for many people in Ghana we're not worried that they wonder whether what are you say like what you appeared on it but you'll see longer glass around a time around nobody it is interesting how people remember you for politics rather military but but some of us remember it more for military done it in politics I didn't do much politics yes yes sir let's apologize yes I didn't like I mean you just being vocal you know I didn't walk her that it's not is about beep it pictures very much so you know local because I want Ghana to go a certain way and it's not way the way I thought it would go all right I'm not political I'm not going to at all I'm a patron who won Ghana very much so so it's Brigade yeah you know man that's right okay retired retired but normally we is a mother even these dissidents are when they says I didn't retire so I don't know what is permitted in the army man well retired because I'm not on active service yeah even though if gana were to go to war right now the Kings I'm feed enough to go back to you know you know I remember I retired 1979 look I don't come back to that and they do for the Roger force and I retired by the Lehman administration twelve years later I was telephoto zoom bar couch over through this Lamade musician I was in my firm at a high caliber family at you are two years but yeah back in the day for me coz you came in and no food everywhere no lady I had my name already though I mean II wanted in better time oh but I'm a farmer done with it so hard to come back looks like uniform clean them up and put them on go back to barracks so quickly you become a militiaman again oh yes I mean you can I mean I was I retired the way you at a tag wasn't the best of all so you are retired by the government by the government well I they go 42 so I'm me at a for the public you know what be you have brigade the other time it was political unfortunately look warm tonight you ever get the other I will give you I would begin the 1976 Wow the long time ago they were done a few brigadiers not more let me ask do you do you teach them any of the academies the militia cuddle unfolded I don't I don't and it's unfortunate that our institutions in the military not even beyond the military should be using people like me whatever they don't they don't I mean again gonna gonna the problem no sorry problems well I thought it'd been a problem one of them is is that when you are supposed to be used when your new abilities for my choice oh I don't know and I went to bridge in 1961 for the first time I've ever done in my life now fishing catching fishes and crappie nearby you end up going to Sonny's son Hurst yes you should have been an excellent student for you to gain admission into son Hester Thurston here if you say the best overseas of the cadets in were desires to go touch more time transit modes you know he went to summer school oh no no no I disagree witness a kiss no rubbish in those days now now is a good old days yeah if you know about what goes on when well happy fishing that seems to come and cook to eat at 2nd year school that's students and my mother to bring food today today today Dimitri - she's got about 700 I'll come and my friends to eat roof on a bank when all those time without that there was no proper meal to her that was conditions that will it be I prefer - I will try papers already and also let mommy roots to Connecticut and trust that you could implement squishies or dinner five pounds in school in please was too poor to three and I I look at I smiled well actually your son is this much yeah or now goes through the Lord I mean who but also got to fight for yourself so you know we have to struggle the struggle gone through they will do can imagine it we came not to going through such hell but that he'll prepared you to be so tough so you are you are born in Winnie bands I'm showing you Winnie burr role of social memory I grew up and I've ever done I'll go to school because they have a full of fishermen if you do with my heart at the beach yeah you see yes about 50 meters out door closing the big catching crabs and fishing school was far away mm-hm but it's cool also behind my method of school well ended up eventually it was behind my father's house so our life was all about fishing anyone was fishing at this time fish every way we're just food was very rare something which never never drove it yeah and I know until about some time 1945 30 45 I know what happened send a good idea to go to school the fishermen everywhere fishing at every way my father wasn't around and it probably came out so it would go to school school verse 15 and I remember very well I was insisting and give him a hell that you know and give him her really her and we never had forced it at a time Methodist Anglican is easy m in this chat machine school then Methodist Roman Catholic and Amy Zion school that's all and my father was forced to go to school in fact that nearest one was Methodist a few metres from my house better so for the poor man you know what to do I was actually crying everywhere I don't forget things crying and giving me hell but as you know what not blame some in this this world I've seen food in my life that we have been ordained by God to come and do something you're not here for not for a purpose at that very moment a rumor that the Presbyterian missionary Michelle from bustle is fiddling well girl select school not for my healthy body it's cool here and that very moment when I was crying for school hmm so this was whooping at a place called Miller's molasses a big cocoa yard but it's actually it's actually a company like boku-kun disease and a given up that's the yeah they said for cocoa we are to go in there without windows that have we started eight boys two years the eight boys only one is allowed to date dr. Don Hatter already know of course the architect acne he was my classmate Oh that's all no more the true girls are no more mechanics iffy Mary Bonnie then the boys and I very well not long ago we almost all finished now but the student progress from Kakashi otaku she about to appreciate you mini but eventually I ended up in a grand Sabha maybe they're in school but I was fully tamazaki I don't know what I mean our determine yes imagine you have nobody teach you automatic what you had homework to do I have to go and figure out the answered what the officer may be a fisherman how did you stick you you know equation no I have no idea but so you move from Winnie burr cross all the police chrome crew Bordeaux's pleases through to in Sabah Wayne semantics want to go to from 3 o class 600 new format from wasn't written in those days and once an a6 yeah then go to middle school from 151 there was not successful in that school was to go somewhere so the worst was exam across the country tetran schools winnable and Sabah I think when yahoo had one and they aquaporin all these schools had exam and those who did very well ended up in a boarding school a cognizable for the first day in my life actually left whom and my mother dropped me me not to go I mean I get took my boat took draw draw a meal then you know what what what what son tired for my dust my life was was was horrible but that was life I remember my school fees in those days was sixpence a day not school fees food who the food was to persuade a g-tube happens it happens that they wouldn't know you ever there's penny with a hole inside two of them was for meal for lunch for breakfast lunch and two for breakfast - for lunch - for dinner so you know you paid about 5p a woody and the football so the food and you know it was amazing food cost not amazing food amazing fantastic food I mean there was no there's no no Dhamma tree no cook house in the school we had caterers in the town okay so we my kid fries sue cook the normal food for the family and then my portion would be put into a bull and brought it to the school for me to eat so you'll experience wonderful experience at insa ban but didn't see for too long or the life was really really harsh I'd wake up in the morning when you're back what about every good man had power had everything yeah well there port shops everywhere then I had to go to this horrible place with the folklore and walk barefoot in the jungle to go and tell you back at the water and a gorilla and he walked through my scene to myself for my CVD yes okay a bucket of water today you think that's what at the time just open a tab that's water in those days good bad what of Cour any water but unsub and didn't habits and all the way to the river between here chrome and the Bhakra and so that life we had a better rough life but that taught me a lot of things I left the school after a few months but I just couldn't bear thee you know it was just too tough even I said yeah wrong person so I left I left school and then came to remember to get mad when you but Methodist school my real life began so at this point they had also started the middle school matter old school both God feels so many people one of the old older schools oh okay Methodist I've been cleared so many so many so many quality people you know so they they were snobby school but ended up at a presbyterian I didn't have spaces at the time but I came back to me and you and I were like we buried a doctor dr. Kitchell last weekend no key to a wonderful doctor okay that's made of mine well he came from France upon the good ones went on France's Mahajan water every day poor ones went to the terrible school you know life but it was exciting I mean life was only from Methodist school you Methodist school then they're good one we are Common Entrance 1952 but they keep I'm talking about he passed well the principal 53 and others went to arch amorta others went but mainly in France Italy but the method of school I stood on anti compliments good 1954 Sangha 700 phone for okay had what we call butcher certificate when were you actually graded and given the middle school live in such exactly don't examination are such okay forget about your teachers didn't you know how well we did then what do I do I couldn't go to secondary school my prayers were too poor to go to secondary school I had to go actually find some work to do to save the money that hand let's save every password that I had every penny we had pumps in Rosia gonna pump glucose pounds semi-precious problem you know I had six pounds a month in those days teach me to have CDs twelve old CDs that's how much I had but every money was saved I saved every password but one food was plentiful that was fissionable I mean I got so much food so much fish the fish world yes they don't think about tomorrow what you eat yet they see they get well put to whom then hook some fish and we're cooking ever say and that was that one beautiful life beautiful life you know through it everywhere not like today so we didn't think of yes tomorrow tomorrow what not a problem the lagoon not far away about teeming with fish I mean I wanna remember this instant Mahmud waters with me today to go and buy food other ticket a car good my terrible so after that you went to secondary school also in 1957 the I thought I had had enough our actually begin to shift with the years would include in the years what I once again high school by then my friends so much completely second education at in France Marin you went to secondary school when you were twenty everyone to form one point affirmed to but once I was working working I was studying so had that hadn't equations a motel equation ordered equation Latin which actually learning so Holly not from accent but but algebra geometry I do part of God's the Rhode Island them so when I would signal school I was I was ahead class and going through the sideburn tree Slobodan and filled with him Wow but bu you are taking two from two street from - not from one may know if I went to form two at a time yes you're not mistaking for a teacher when you didn't stand up the whole class do class then that was a Norman though the other the norm I mean even going to primary one you are you all grown up I mean I was eight yes precisely I wouldn't know but you are grown up but a few ones way below each nobody knew the age you know this well the people gave birth outside Hospital and so I noticed were illiterate nobody knew when you were born they remember that I'm a product remember that all when we had the earthquake I don't forget about the earthquake and me tonight number 20 years but two years old and a few months so a thirty tonight okay take two years to the 7 June June rather said were agitated tonight so two years out to the seven years old a little something so you have a good idea about when you were born the exact dates you wouldn't know no fear Fresno our days of birth so I want to get there school teacher seven then I became dependents a time I was in school it's cool that you see today is a very good school now but yes it was very difficult we didn't have teachers good just came in there the whole five years we had five years of national school before my time exams were held in December in that year 1960 work took over examination from Cambridge but the Sun about the same and the body forward to June so June exam started in 1960 so actually did three and half years okay it's not five years yeah I love what I have yet but that is a matter to me you know and but either way so we're so hot I mean I remember coming to do the exam in Accra we don't have a SAM Center in winnable Wow so I came to live with a cousin at running that's okay run about some nearly the mosque and the example held at McCollough is a big holiday remember very huge hole in the middle of McCullough and yes imagine the noise is amazing that they put out there to do is a mission you couldn't you couldn't hear your next door there was no tolling of bells and lonk me don't call me don't call me back and too much noise and were supposed to think and do mathematics I just couldn't imagine how he survived but we managed and I was the first in that school to come out with good one good one yes and that all those harsh conditions everybody don't believe that it was possible but it everything's possible if I apply or dollars a huge it was huge I mean to get get one was very huge in Beverly huge in those days that you have to pass it subjects with very good grades is and bees and so on you know and it I miss did that miss me but I knew that I was working extremely hard out in Larson we didn't have teachers you have to actually go to book shops come try to mother Goose job by the syllabus by the book and study on once a while you had a teacher to help you I don't have an adult no teacher so we never actually began Chi Chi from ganas kind of school to us girls in my time oh and the reason was very simple in 1959 I was about to fill the school when conditions were so harsh you are certain about the exam new teachers poor nutrition nothing before had so there were three boys I was one of them one mr. foo-foo aware mr. booba we got a man say look let's watch the promise at the time the antenna work not a republic and complain about the school and ask him to come and help but we couldn't take any more she read a letter which are anonymous and then pushing it at the post one night one of us type the letter not me it went to commercial so yourself moments fufufu Oh Boober Booga wouldn't let anonymously to the Prime Minister flux affair to the Jubilee house or flux a brother time a crime we thought were just joking but amazingly within a matter of two or three weeks there was room and it's cool that some still had written a letter to Prime Minister continued by the school kept quiet but we had done nothing yeah criminal we are concerned about our future and don't comment is something which I miss all of us I mean it which amazes me I read two presents after him and I don't get any respond that he billeted received then I was smaller than but smaller but but you know but they were there were several servants who knew what they were about when the letter Clarion depends on chroma the inflammasome chroma soit to be open by his privacy controls at the Prime Minister if that was important so that the Prime Minister for attention then what were happened what happened with me actually what defense the routine my abc not is my email open a letter and it affirmed aside what about the s remarks a anything you see this one which are irrelevant you put them aside so I know the Roma saw this letter which was pushed to him he military on it and within two three weeks one of mrs. gifts a white lady came to the school a little smallish woman but very like like a field dog smart away you know really a tigress and she to the school attacks hadn't to go and attend school upside down and clean it up I don't come on but fought it out this woman came to the school until it began to change it was a good mother teacher I was in a class I remember when when she began to tell his cool upside down you know the teachers rebelled against been threatening your life and I was I was at tough in those days and I had to spend some time in her house sleeping in the living room like here mmm yes you know and something happen I always have faith in God and it begins to grow and grow edema I've saved money to pay my school fees two years on the money had ran out plus I was actually wondering what to get after holidays and I was in the house zipping they're going home the next morning then one morning the lady called me fell in the morning and said you know being such last mom said who pays your school fees out of the blue I said my mother he said your mother what did she do I think she sells food stuffs at the market did you know that Marcus is articulate not far from the school that all she does and she pays her fees she didn't believe me of course he didn't believe me so right but I didn't tell her that you know I was painting and he said where's her mother she's our in the at home you said tomorrow Monday month was already Morris money Bingham added to my house I'm cutting I will take you to again Education Trust and get you a scholarship I'm putting it on couch I wanted to my mother I mean Manolete mobile it'll break by 8 we were there i sat in the passenger side of the car she was driving her very well you know the concern sad for us as if I knew he knew me somewhere there's something which is missing in Ghana today so spending time and in in Winnie by secondary school and coming up with with grade 1 yes which which even in our time it was a big deal yes did you do sit form or at the time if you couldn't pay your school fees good thing about this form however the payoff good how are you gonna pay you couldn't be God for you true education faculty Cossacks think offices for so it wasn't option at the time it was an option but then something happened yes before we left school universities we know where they are at the moment yeah we move from the south campus today suck of the vessel education is about to a new site central campus whenever someone a middle of the time yeah and I know where when the SEC is now the way you're talking about no wait at which I didn't would have coold a we ended up right in the town with a big market in winnable not there were two markers one at the beach one in the middle of town a big one in fact there's a couple there for invested called central campus rock music and not wait away win the pot school of music that's that way I would love to and at that time before we did I was on there was a group from the McDonald's Academy one child I named the riverbeast a libras English man with a team of officers mainly whites will scoot from school to school convincing and people there was a career in the military so as a nurse to apply to go into the military there's an option occurrence I could use infuse our military bug hit with my family a lot of pame my father took us all 14 Burma Majorca who was killed with the judges et to some across I'm aqua some Appa will be up in the same house yet the CE Marking we never saw my father relation so a lot of historical and antecedent dissidents in my family so where did I mean what an option had wasn't wasn't there something that Otto taking words no I get one day and imagine and we did an exam in June thought hadn't actually arrived yet by me we were called to Burma come for examination and test one week of tests came the Bema ha in Bama come and went through mathematics exam and English well she had just come from Matt my husband won in mathematics oh and I was even a little bit over time to come and just brush through it you know an English and I went through that I had one week of practical examination at each paragraph but when you show that you are not only mentally sound but physically able to capable and wherever very well that so at this point you are now being introduced into the military that's right okay so you are watching footprint and I've been speaking with behavior you know Mensa and he's just taking us through his footprints you know some of the footprint has all weekly and of good substance good value that we can't just let them go like that so we still have a lot to learn but now he has entered the military training process would take a short break when we come back he will share his experiences how he became a soldier my name is Samuel Ottoman sir we'll be back welcome back I'm having a good time the program is a footprint and I'm here with Brigadier nanu Meza or general una Mesa I feel a few a lot of punch in the general one under Brigadier W guys you know as general new Mensa so easier with us so general you have now been can I see rooted into the Army almost about okay now let me clear one small point why not comfortable with the idea if you are having controversial or my life and I make people uncomfortable and it doesn't bother me to make you uncomfortable I live by the truth I was super defensive on two occasions the rank then was made a general it became life in general so I've been promoted for my battle emergency I'm not somebody who will cool you know compromise my principles because of rank know I speak my mind I remember that captained the army 1964 and I will take you to pay them comers office to explain something I had done yes imagine will do come off office young man fish and you are going to explain yourself but is this is the kind of person I am I've been taught to speak the truth not to lie and I've got many many projects with a with a command I mean well I can go through many of them tena koe together I was the Unicode okay whoever threw kuma but not many people have the courage to speak yeah but I'm for the gonna hear what do you speak your mind you forget offended for speaking the truth and such on fire say John Walton I was for the TV because it is agree on issues of principle I'm an adviser he tells you something he doesn't it doesn't tell you what you want to hear so you're fine I was fired by the man as cheaper different stuff but I will never cut out my Minister of Defense but thoroughly Putin never ever threw your fire but didn't bother me had a big fund I want my fun we need ghanians to the strong strong-minded bold to speak up and speak what they believe to be right you may be wrong but that what you believe is the right speak up gonna be better off so the rank doesn't bother me actually less a general but it didn't bother it was I will come here I was also I resign from present government no Latrobe property you get it I'm just gonna so why it wasn't the thing you know I left over there it is okay so would have been the idea general Mickey camera Major General before but I saw a political but didn't bother me anyway at all it's better that I live in a liberal foot Mac will be proud to defend my children than to the party for my grandfather was this man but well some people promoted andouille that you in your own estimation yes I mean a lot of promotions were chichi promotions at the time at a time you remember some of them I don't want to mention it but but you remember an event of them all they are plenty then we can guess we are younger so we are free together I would imagine unless the I hear themselves I can defend themselves but I wouldn't do that but don't let the chip in the caja Baku are Champa in his is he I was young but I remember he he promoted himself yes Kouta Chama was a kind of yes when he but will with your 1970 jr. taking my beam I don't forget anything no you don't you know and the military is a wonderful career and I recommend that many of our people go to admin National section spend some tiny military why it should be a requirement should be a requirement Department you go through that before you become even if it's for one month yes for woman and it's ready three months three months three measurements well six my preferably you go through that this was there we have become so yes but veganism as today because of discipline discipline you will not been disciplined never ever if what you give us one month admitted three months three with them true walking from and shake shake them up a little bit so who you met when you were finally yeah on my meter out nobody's every now oh yeah of course of course many of them they are no more receives all of them and that also what 1960 what was taking with the Ministry of Defense the graph the graph the graph Johnson there was general agenda many many many many offices and not aluminum bow that was sudden Smith selected among is a picture might be somewhere by six of us in taken in take two okay two of you were two intakes at the same time one was in March 1960 take wonder what people like getting us some you know some you know him yeah somebody take one yeah he used to be in this just not for me yes Hollywood you know some and who has got a few his he is able many of them they are either disabled not able to have physical problems so he wasn't take one in 1960 March 1960 and then I wasn't think to October 1960 my meter you know Quinnie was my me okay genique we know we know where's my caddie yeah call a few of them but I think I now attend temperature d mmit I D I know the Sun yeah who's also in the military yeah for possibly Mike ID was you not know but I've been up early who hurry a fairy isn't take one you also used to live in this area so that's big enough no no Jennifer Jennifer I mean you know free it's an old Fox but he is much much more of a senior oh no no way not funny oh no one else when I was in the India in the school it was Lincoln letter that he signed definitely made my 100 Retton to me to come for interview and so on he and yellow crane that I remember very well you in school he died not long ago but my children came from your areas all right he came from he come from Bobby Brava Brava or Clara so come on Saku maybe a backhoe is going to add some sue that's right he died months ago so we are Lucien OD but natural cosmas might you group not very many those who are alive they are not public yeah they are too quiet and nothing that they should be able to come up and see where this elective program living your footprints you can't you live in this world I guess passes pass through my mother you tell me if I am a Fe or be easy mmm-hmm simple I'm a nobody isn't a good name a good name you know to tomorrow if you go to any bar if you get an amazing house yeah I will but I have to be there but you have streets named after you to another way I don't know about that of school very successful goes mmm yes well so we'll come to that one so I still here on footprints we are talking to general no no man would take a short break when we come back we'll go through the military academy quickly and then we'll see life after passing out of the Academy stay tuned welcome back had this is footprints my name is Sam mullet Amanda and the City TV and today we've been having a wonderful chat with general new new Mensa general new Mensa and you know when I was a kid I used to come his new demands now with missile whooshes you know because we are all in the AMIA time yeah you are connected to the P and EC somehow in a way okay connected yeah so anyway so this is general new nomensa and it's been it's been an eye-opener talking to him and his experiences struggles and and and and you know he in all these things so far what I have picked up is that he never give up hope he had no background in financial backing nobody to refer to but he never give up so if you are listening to us please don't go anywhere so now you are in the economy in the economy 1960 Oktoberfest 1960 met about 50 or 50 odd other students from France of different policies but then the teachers were mostly British cotton okay mister captain Watson major stones and misogyny remember the names yes fantastic so as part of the drill that's right that we have a shot we shot didn't even come from drinking a petition doing terrible things if the brain is living an organ if you are beauty bin by drinking what kind of stupid says you destroyed it breathe only tell young people today that yeah the bill you can't just do the brain by drinking every cocktail of drink some green blue and they get drink and I get drink what energy destroy the brain but I never drunk didn't see foolishly so the army want the army the first year at birth of life very rough like it was very rough extremely rough but you used to some smaller of a bar Kelly I loved it I loved it then a year later now in September 1961 better selection to choose for best lot to go to Britain I know in the whole I was one of them myself can click on FLE SMI Quincy be I'm coming me free to be free to at me I live I can't even and failure no more we want to Britain 61 but first I never drain in my life that the fisherman's I end up go to the army I'm going to Britain I never had a slatted dream so tell me about it so you were there and then you have been told that some before we are ready yeah there yeah and they have been exactly watching you I mean this is the way the physical minute and they have been compiling Letran you here but my also actually met him in Sonny's so they come up with a special show for people the best of the lot in Ghana here to go to Britain and meet the best of the Lord across the Commonwealth anybody choose the best sylvania King and Nigeria they are best for to go to sign so this is the nonnamous son of a fisherman yes from simple yes super hot Oh awesome Amparo much beautiful and this way I am the way I want to I want to experience there's so much you see I don't want to enjoy the toy you know so how do you relate subcommittee that your parents Parker my parents you know I I get to my my father no I do the about one hour I win about okay so you're allowed to go home I don't know I mean when you're not can you country you can travel and we can work exactly tango okay you're not in prison time you come allowed to go so I told out going away to Britain he was elated September 14th we left I went to Sonya's we went to cumberly not commonly Canterbury Canterbury Canterbury cut back a dead horse made by and in a second say I mean I'm I don't know what's inside my breathe but I remember he said in its a kind of school yeah well as a second time as a backwards I'd be sure to condemn him whoever was sent to would the the country cottage and melodies I'd be shocked anyway from there to east later the world I wonder what army cadets I mean full of myself befitting equal CB and Philly and fairly rude of her beautifully then ever maybe once I made me made me yeah Roy Choi I mean I imagine yeah then there was show me show me show me who later on was connected some cuckoo something you went to the or day I'm sorry nowadays anyway so what science and what an experience but you had read about some tests no I do know anything about books I learned a bit of Google for everything being cool and winter but I never experienced snow so when you actually physically meet it it was an ordeal and explained with several with you know like rely on the snow and train and should rely on the snow and don't be fielded a lady cool I mean you are conditioned see the brain is very powerful you cause a big adrenaline so your first day you you move from if you go by aircraft you know we move then and then the Betania popular you want room to machinery of airport in room the print developed engine problems so that later and had a had breakfast the belt I came without like what you know and if it wasn't cooked at all it's not your raw egg goes we interpret not good to all these relief you to Britain and landed at the airport and then you
