[Music] [Music] [Applause] Jerry's re-watch it [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] well we all sang fools rush in where angels fear to tread it's pretty true in the timber business it's a dangerous business so let's have another look at this particular operation to see what can be done to make it safer in the bush it's essential to know what the other bloke is doing before starting the faller and the skitter drivers should get together and work out what they want to do it's a team effort once the skidder driver starts his engine it's pretty hard for him to hear the chainsaw or for that matter of falling tree [Music] our Bushmen here unfortunately is only concerned with falling trees as fast as possible he reckons the skidder driver has to keep out of his way and he is double danger firstly the scooter drivers too close secondly hungry Harry has forgotten about that projecting limb just waiting for something to knock it down and of course our scooter driver is not wearing a hard hat Jerry's re-watch that's a bit class I thought you lunch so I go for Johnny med and those boots don't look all that good steel toed boots with non-skid soles are essential in this business you'd reckon this black would know better there's trouble all around him first up he's got too long a lead on that long he should bring the butt up to the rear of the skin and the chances of that log rolling on that slope are pretty high if it does it could pull the skidder over [Music] have a look at this landing site it's just plain bloody dangerous there's not enough room here to work safely [Music] that mere accident was certainly the skidder drivers fault but if he'd had a bit more room to turn in then perhaps it might have happened of course this bloke could still be in trouble cutting on the same side as his standing is deadly and that type of rough treatment doesn't do the truck much good carrying a log high up like that is not doing your loader any good either and with a high load it only needs a bit of a bump to tip it all over [Music] this is a common problem the truck driver wants to direct the loading but standing alongside or jumping up onto the truck itself puts him in a dangerous situation [Music] it's difficult to get a fully loaded truck with these sorts of logs making an unstable load like this is certainly asking for trouble and he could be breaking the law on load height regulations [Music] and you don't need to use a pipe on the binder it's dangerous so forget it waltz there was a sort of load at least three chains are a minimal requirement [Music] a little bit of bouncing up and down and it's only natural that this loaders came to settle trouble is he doesn't look like stopping to check it [Music] they've all been lucky after now perhaps this bloke might make it around to spend - anyway let's leave them and have a look at another outfit over the hill [Music] I'll show you down under here for you to clean up for me under here for your for while you get them I'm going to move up onto the hill up here not long why don't you come up there before you know it means a bit of a girl between my place welcome to anyway will you get these through the only and I'll move up there anyway so we'll be safe for now that's what it's all about communication talk it out before you start it's the best way and the safest way [Music] this blokes okay straight up the slope although if it was much deeper he'd have to use his winch but judging by the way he operates he'd know them [Music] and this landing is very good chances of an accident happening here are greatly reduced it's well laid out and gives everybody plenty of room to work in the quicker race torrents fitted to this track have some advantages over the fixed drop-in type they require less maintenance and when necessary they can be released from the opposite and safe side when unloading [Music] and this is good the loader driver puts the logs on easy and the truck driver standing in the correct place up front beside his cab always carry at least four binder chains on the truck apart from any legal requirements it's just plain common sense to use a third or fourth chain when you've got a few short blogs on the top and that's the best and safest place for the binder it's also a good idea to tie up the surplus chain that way there's no risk of the title of the chain dragging along and catching on something [Music] regulations on load height in relation to the staunch ins very but as a general principle don't have more than half the log above the stalks [Music] if you don't want to risk losing your load then it's only natural that you stop at least a couple of times to check and tighten your chains [Music] this is a good example of a safe practice in operation everybody knows exactly what is going on so chances of an accident happening here are pretty remote safety in this business really boils down to adopting a systematic approach to every job it might take an extra few minutes during the day but the blokes who take this time are always the ones who come out on top I suppose you could say they're the professionals [Music] of course you always come across some fools in this game good lord on Mike where's risky lies I lost a couple loads up there and I tried and that's if in bin you know why the bloke loads amount the voice is no wonder is bloody hopeless I found the usual story blame the other bloke I wish I had a dollar for every time I've heard somebody say something like that [Music] [Music]
