[Music] are you a beginner pianist who wants to play fly me to the moon but you don't want to read a bunch of complicated sheet music or learn a ton of complex chords well if this describes you then in today's lesson i'm going to teach you how to play fly me to the moon in three simple steps starting with a basic lead sheet we're then going to add some simple chords and then i'm going to teach you the most important technique that you should know as a beginner pianist to develop a solid groove so let's go ahead and dive in all right we're gonna start with the lead sheet for flying me to the moon i'm gonna teach you the melody then i'm gonna show you the basic left hand chords and then i'm gonna show you the most important technique to establish your solid groove okay so fly me to the moon really cool melody and the first thing that you should do as a beginner pianist is to simply learn this melody and it is a very simple melody okay so we're going to be starting on this c here we're on the c above middle c and basically i'm going to be walking kind of around all of the notes of the c major scale so most of the melody notes from this tune use notes from the c scale okay so first little phrase really simple okay so i'm basically starting on a high c and i'm just walking down to my f and then i'm walking up i'm gonna skip the b and then i'm gonna walk down to my e okay that's kind of the first phrase of the sheet music okay second phrase of the sheet music really simple basically i'm starting on the a i'm just walking down [Music] and i'm walking up i'm going to skip the g play the a and then we're gonna have a quick little g sharp here and then we skip down to f and then walk this down to the c okay really simple melody okay now for phrase number three it's gonna go like this okay so basically that's a little c sharp here you can use your index finger i like to cross to my thumb there there's the a twice and then we go c b g really simple and then to end the phrase we go b c f f okay and then we're going to go up to the a a g f and down to e okay really really simple now we're basically going to repeat this a second time so you're going to play everything that you just played so here's a quick review [Music] phrase number two now we're going to go to that c sharp here you can use the third finger now it's going to change here in a second we go c b g and then we're going to end the tune now the way that you end the tune you're going to go g-sharp and then a c c and then c d c okay that is the entire melody of the tune all right before i teach you the chords if you're enjoying this lesson please hit the like button and subscribe for more videos just like this okay congratulations on learning your melody the next step is to add your basic chords and the amazing thing about flying me to the moon is that most of the chords use white notes meaning they are all chords that come from the c major scale okay and as a quick review if you took all of your notes from the c major scale and you built chords on them okay and specifically these are called seventh chords they're four note chords where you're skipping every other note from the scale and if you do this all the way up the piano okay basically most of the chords in this tune will use one of these seventh chords that come from the c major scale okay so check this out first chord a minor seven okay it's gonna be there okay really simple right again you're just stacking thirds from the c major scale we have our first chord and there's our melody fly me to the and then d minor seven is our next chord it's gonna be right there okay super simple again just playing the melody on the top next chord is a g7 see that again just stacking thirds on the g and now we're on the c okay we're just stacking thirds and we land on our melody note there okay let's continue along here next chord f major seven is right there okay super simple [Music] next chord b minor seven flat five it sounds like a scary chord it's just that okay it's all white notes stacking thirds from the c major scale and then our next chord is a little bit different it uses all notes from the c scale except for this raised g sharp okay this is called an e7 chord but don't worry too much about the theory it will make sense as you get exposed to these chords and then on the a it's gonna be down there okay so simple that's the beautiful thing about jazz is you actually don't oftentimes have to think too much about the chords because often times the chords come from one scale okay c sharp pick up note there there's our d minor okay next chord g seven now two and e minor seven again all white notes now we do have a slightly new chord here called an a7 again it's using mostly notes from the c scale but we're raising that c to a c sharp this is called a secondary dominant technique if you want to learn more about that next phrase there's a d minor seven there okay and then we're gonna go to a g7 very simple and then a c chord again and then we're gonna have two chords here b and then e7 is going to get us back to the a minor chord which is the first chord of the tune okay so we're going to repeat this section we go back to the beginning i'm going to put my a chord up here so quick little review we're going to play the same thing that we just played super simple f major and then our e7 and now it's gonna change a little bit here okay c sharp d now to our g7 chord and here's where it changes we're going to go to an e minor 7 and then an a7 a dominant 7 chord okay pretty simple and then we have g sharp and then there's our d chord and then our g chord and then our c chord real simple and then our b chord back to our e chord and this takes us back to the beginning of the tune all right before we get to step three and i teach you how to groove on this we're gonna play the melody and chords with the included backing track and by the way this lesson comes with three downloadable backing tracks that you can practice at different tempos so i'll put a link to those below alright let's go ahead and play this with the backing track at the middle tempo here we go here it is [Music] you can change the rhythm on your melody okay here we go [Music] have fun with the rhythms okay next phrase [Music] and kind of pop your cords a little bit [Music] we're going to take this back to the top here it is [Music] 2 3 now our f chord next phrase our d chord our g7 here's our e pop your chords here d g7 here's our c and then b back to e all right before we move on to step three the most important step if you're enjoying this lesson and you want to do a deep dive on flying me to the moon including how to walk bass lines how to add really beautiful colors to your chords and how to fill in your right hand check out our fly me to the moon courses i'll put a link to those below all right we are now to step number three and step number three is the most exciting part of this lesson because this is where it starts to really groove check out what the tune's gonna sound like once you learn the section it sounds amazing but it is so simple to play okay so here's what i'm doing in the left hand instead of just playing these very simple chords i'm actually jumping up from the root of the chord to only two notes from the chord and these are called guide tones okay now here's how guide tones work if you take your chord like an a minor seven and you take the third note and the seventh note from the chord one two three four five six seven these are called guide tones and they're the most important notes on all of the chords so if i jump from the root a up to my guide tones and by the way i'm gonna take my g from my guide tone i'm gonna put it down here so let's jump a up to my guide tones you get a really cool sound and so you can do this on all of your chords if you go to your d minor seven chord it's gonna be right there i'm gonna go to my guide tones on this chord remember i said the guide tones are the third and the seventh of the chord okay so there's the guide tones and then on my g7 chord that's my next chord i'm gonna go to my guide tones right here okay and i'm gonna invert to the guide tones so that i'm staying in kind of the same range of the piano okay does this make sense and so we're going to do this on all the chords so let's go over all the guide tones for this tune and then we're going to groove on them okay so a minor starts on the bottom melody is going to be on the top so we're going to go fly and then we're going to jump to our guide tone right there okay does that make sense and then on the d minor 7 we're going to grab the d on the bottom and then let's grab the guy tone pretty simple right and then our g7 chord it's gonna be there and let's grab the guide tone here [Music] and then our c major seven chord it's gonna be here and grab the guide tones it's so simple okay now we're gonna change the rhythm just a little bit here in a second but before we do this you gotta make sure you can play these chords accurately okay f major seven it's gonna be down here there's the guide tones right e and a okay b minor seven flat five there's the guide tones okay super simple e7 on the bottom that's gonna be there there's the guide to it okay and then a minor seven we're gonna hop back up to our guide tones let go of the melody there next phrase d minor seven chord we already played these guide tones before should be pretty simple g on the bottom there's our guide tones e minor seven it's gonna be here and then our a7 guide tones g and c sharp okay we're almost to the end of the first phrase you're doing a great job there's the guide tones now the g7 that comes together and then our c major seven there's the guide tones and then on these two chords b minor seven flat five we're just going to grab two notes on this chord these are called chord shells it's kind of a more efficient way of playing your chords now we're going to repeat this entire phrase so we're going to go back to the top so here's a quick review d minor 7 g7 c major seven doing a great job f major seven b minor seven [Music] e seven a minor seven doing a great job now to our d minor seven g seven it's gonna change a little bit here now we're to our second ending here e minor seven it's gonna be there and then our a7 super simple okay melody note there here's the d minor seven chord we're actually sharing a note there so you could take your left hand thumb away g7 a little cluster there that's okay and then we have our final chord c major seven and then our two chords b minor seven flat 5 to our e7 alright the final step to all this is to groove on your chords and right now you're going fly me to the but it's way cooler to go see how we're adding a little bit of groove to our left hand and we're basically doing one thing the entire time we're going one and two and three and four and this is called the charleston groove one and two and three and four basically you're putting your chord on the and of beat two and so you can do this with all of your chords on the d minor seven one and two and three and four and it will make your playing so much more interesting all right so we're gonna play the full tune one more time but this time we're going to apply that charleston groove to the entire tune and here we go with the backing track this is at the slowest tempo here we go here it is one two three [Music] two and four [Music] back to the top [Music] two [Music] and then [Music] hey thanks for watching and if you
