Fly an Airplane on Skis | Antarctica 360 VR Video | Discovery TRVLR

my name is Brian Richardson I'm a pilot in Antarctica I've been flying in Antarctica for ten years now and I love flying here because it's you feel free here this is a dc-3 that was built in 1943 the dc-3 is one of the few airplanes that is certified on skis which makes it great in Antarctica we're one of two tourist operations which basically is an NGO and we get limited support from the the science bases but it's great to have people come down here and see the beauty of Antarctica flying Antarctica is mostly all visual we have GPS but your main flying is done visually which is difficult because of the everything's white so it's hard to actually see the surface so the will Fang camp that you can see basically is a tent camp we've got a few containers here now there's a workshop container we have a comms room so we get emails but only data not very we can't get images so communication can be difficult we have a dining room / lounge where we mostly stay in because it's got a heater we've got lots of food lots of dehydrated food but for dinner we always try to do something special and Derek the copilot he makes some pretty good burritos so that they've been a change from our dehydrated meals and the main tent is of course the the washroom in the middle it's basically just a bucket and showering we just do a very limited shower we're getting ready for an upcoming storm that's gonna be here with us for the next day and a half or so we're expected winds of up to 60 knots so we've got the airplane tied down and we're getting the tents prepared for that as well the flight crew for the dc-3 consists of two pilots and an engineer and the engineer also doubles as a flight attendant when we have passengers and we become quite close we do everything together we eat together fuel together and obviously do all the flying together so there's a strong bond after you know the end of a few months of working together it takes a special breed to be a pilot here in Antarctica so after the weather cleared at wolfing runway we proceeded here to debate which is basically a ice runway this is one of the more beautiful places of Antarctica because you can see the ocean you've got the icebergs and of course the Penguins and we even have some blue sky today you know one day I hope my son and daughter can make it down here as well because there are pilots as well [Music] life here is very non stressful in a way because you're away from all the media and everything happening at home but at the same time you miss home [Music] very remote and it's like flying in the last frontier you you
