Fluidmaster Toilet Seal - Install and Review

hey this is rich from house burns calm my brother Dave and I renovate houses along with Dave's son Caleb and today we want to talk to you about an interesting product made by Fluidmaster and it's their universal toilet seal if you're new to our channel consider subscribing because we want to show you how to do a job yourself so you can save a ton of money so Dave and I have replaced the number of toilets in our time and that's not very pleasant task but I was just over at the hardware store and they were charging 130 dollars for an install so I'm like hey you know unless you're making more than 130 an hour this is worth doing on your own it's a great DIY project so we have other videos where we'll show you exactly how to remove an old one and install a new one and we'll put links to those videos right up there this video however is just about one specific part of the install which is dealing with the toilet seal this is the traditional toilet seal used for a long time and it's basically this kind of disgusting wax ring and what is it good about it is once you place this and then you put your toilet on it you can't move it because if you do you're gonna break the seal so this new product is super cool because you just basically place it down in there and you can actually move it around to reposition the toilet if you need to put it in a new spot and it won't break the seal so because it's got a compression fit and its really awesome so anyway I've got to now I've got a pretty grim task ahead of me this toilets been here a long time and it is not pleasant but let me get rid of that then I'll show you the details about this fluid master toilet seal I put on my husband gloves because this is pretty grim in here so this is the old wax ring I'm gonna have to get in there and pry all that up this is the new toilet seal that we'll be using and you can just see you know how neat and clean it is it's definitely a much better deal than using Y this is how a new wax ring looks and it basically sits over the flange and then when you put the toilet on top of it it squishes that wax out and it flattens it to look like that mess right there and so now in order to proceed with the new seal that I have I've got to scrape every bit of this old nasty wax off of here so it's super messy job it could have been so easy if they just used this product here okay so what we're trying to do here is to get all of the wax off of this which is called the flange the flange is what secures your toilet to the floor and we'll be using two bolts to secure the toilet to the flange so anyway this is what the flange looks like this black ring and what you have to do is get all of the wax off of it and well first off i've always wondered why the manufacturers of the wax make it brown let's say any other color would be a better choice like give me a lime green so i know what i'm scraping here is actually wax so anyway something else to note is you want to put a rag or a big roll of big wad of paper towels into your drain pipe so that nothing falls down in there which could later get clogged get all the wax off that you can remove and we're especially interested in making it so that it's all off the top here and we want to be able to get our bolts in here in here so just make sure that's all nice and clean to remove the wax a flathead screwdriver does a really good job so you just have to work at it awhile because the wax adheres to the flange pretty tightly so when it looks something like that we're ready to proceed here's what our new product looks like of what comes in the package there's basically three different possibilities when you go to install your new toilet this is the flange and if there's only three things that can happen it's either going to be above the floor like this is so you can see there's the floor and this is above the floor the flange could also be even with the floor or the flange could be slightly below the floor they've got every scenario covered so all you have to do is you know follow the instructions and figure out which of the three to do for your install so as luck would have it we have the easiest one here because our flange happens to be above the floor so basically it all has to do with this spacer here and if it's above the floor you don't need the spacer so we're gonna we'll put that to the side all right so they give you this nice little package of hardware here it's got everything we need and these bolts you just insert them and then spin it so that it fits in easily and then you just turn it so it will lock underneath the flange and the toilet will be able to just pull up okay so now we're gonna remove the item that was covering up the drain and if you've got any more wax to get out go ahead and do that alright so they give you these little plastic washers and after you've got your bolts inserted you will just slide that over there slip that on top push it down and that's just gonna make it easier once we have the toilet it'll keep these bolts upright otherwise they move all around and it becomes kind of challenging when you're holding a heavy toilet [Music] okay see how that has them standing straight up now we're gonna take this guy put it over there okay now that our seals in place we're gonna go get the toilet and we'll put it over the bolts the toilet we're installing in there is called the Kohler Cimarron that's how it's gonna look and it's got a round ball and the reason for that is that that's a tight area there so you want to use a shorter Bowl but I installed another toilet yesterday here this one's also a Kohler toilet it's the Highline and it's really awesome because it has this elongated Bowl and both of them nice and high so that you can sit on them get up and down easily we'll just tighten the bolts it'll be good one very cool thing to talk about this fluid master toilet seal is at this point if you used the old-time wax ring you'd be stuck right now if you didn't like how that was positioned but because this is a compression fit you can move that toilet around as many times as you want and get it exactly how you want which is a very which is very awesome there's nothing more frustrating than if there's something that went wrong at this point and now you have to take it off and scrape the wax ring that you just put on there and then go to the hardware store and get yet another one so anyway just get this the fluid master kit they give you these nuts and washers so you just put them on there tighten them up it's good alternate sides so tighten one side down so it's just about tight and then alternate to the other side and everything in plumbing is tricky because you can't over or under tighten something so you know you got to make it secure but if you crank down on that nut it will crack the toilet so basically you just want to get it so it's secured all right you just want to tighten that enough so it isn't wobbly anymore and then you're good and you can proceed with the rest of the toilet install and as I said we made other videos about that so we'll put a link to those videos right there so you
