well hi there beach friends ready for another beach walk we are gonna see some critters we are gonna find a whole bunch of shells we are gonna see some pretty wild weather some fog rolls in like i have never seen before don't know if you've ever heard that saying if you don't like the weather in florida just wait five minutes and apparently it's really a thing so we are going to talk a little bit about safety we're gonna do a whole bunch of things including learning so let's go to the beach [Music] [Applause] [Music] okay we are back at fort myers beach because it is low tide it's going to be almost zero up to about 10 o'clock in the morning and that is something i wanted to capitalize on and wasn't too cold out nice 68 degrees a little bit of fog and we'll see much more that later here we have a calico scallop of the purple and gray variety it's a fine looking shell check this guy out he is really pretty that is a broad ribbed cardina and i really liked the coloring on that guy so i decided i was going to keep it so you can kind of see a little bit of the fog coming in we drove through it on the way to the beach and then it kind of cleared up but it looks like it's rolling in and i'll show you later on it gets crazy here we have a little coquina i love these guys they're so colorful so pretty managed to hold on to him so that's a little cocina a live guy here's another one of those calico scallops pretty pink little guy oh here we have a snowy egret looking for his breakfast kind of marching along and we have found a ponderous ark one of those ubiquitous they are everywhere so let's definitely learn it that is a ponderous ark and here we have a prickly cockle see all those little kind of like little spikes on it they are to the touch they are a little bit prickly so there we have a prickly cockle and here we have just a wee little turkey wing just a little guy but he had real pretty color not beat up at all so i'll figure out hold on to him and here we have ooh look at that tangerine color that is also a calico scallop as is that one so i get two pretty scallops and right this was funny all right so that's a disc dossinia and that is a quahog and i know when you put them next to each other they they look really really similar but when you hold them they're really really not one is much heavier the quahog is much heavier but that's some of those things that drive me crazy i'm trying to figure out what all these shells are and they look just like everything else that does not look like anything else that is clearly a deceased sand dollar you're definitely going to want to handle these guys with care i have a little plastic container that i put that in in my shell bag so it doesn't get all beat up hopefully that guy will make its way all the way home all right looks like we have ourselves a sunray venus not the best coloring i've ever seen i like it when it's black when the accent color is black looks like we got all sorts of arcs and see a slipper crossbar venus broadcardia all sorts of goodies here and hopefully we'll find a whole bunch of keeper awesome shells here we have a piece of coral i believe this is a thin finger coral we always find little pieces of this stuff sometimes i pick it up sometimes i don't today i decided yes gonna pick it up oh look at this guy isn't that pretty without the little white specks in it thinking that's a base scallop of the pretty kind and here we have a piece of a top snail now i was under the impression that top snails really only came in that particular color but i was wrong and i'll show you in a little bit and here we have another sand dollar looks like the sun peeked out beautiful guy completely safe to take home he is deceased and he'll go in my little little plastic container uh oh and another here is another one he's not quite as spectacular as that first one but he is still in pretty good shape these i love to give away to people who i think are not locals maybe they're here on vacation because i know they're such a treasure of the sand dollar so that is one of my favorite things to give away oh yeah all sorts of goodies on the beach let's check out this florida fighting conch all right he's kind of standard but still a pretty guy a little bit of fighting and this is one of the areas that i always like to show this is on south fort myers beach and just wait till you see this with fog i'm telling you it's crazy here is another florida fighting conch he's kind of got that layer of stuff on him which i haven't quite figured out how to get rid of yet so the ones that have a lot of stuff i sometimes don't um i don't seem to keep that one by my foot that was just rolling that had a lot of stuff on it yeah he's got he's got that layer so does this guy so until i can figure out how to clean that up i figure we'll just leave it for somebody else another florida fighting some ponderous arcs all sorts of good stuff yep tons of beach treasures and look at this pretty little blue gray coquina they come in all different colors i love it love love love it and here we have a sun brain venus that has that black accent color that i like so much alright he's in pretty good shape here let's take a peek at the back there is a sunrise venus oh here we go rose petal talon not pretty always that color well no that's not true sometimes they can't be faded okay so here we are into the learning part of the video this is called naker this is what i usually just call that super shiny pretty stuff and it actually has a name it's called maker it's also called mother of pearl and it is a material produced by some mollusks as an inner shell layer and it is the material pearls are made of so when you see me pick up the pretty fun iridescent looking stuff it does have a name it's called naker and that's what pearls are made out of kind of cool all right here we have another florida fighting conch that now is debating on whether he was repairing himself or he really just got damaged along the way and managed to just kind of do his thing not really sure but that guy definitely has a story to tell i wish i knew what it was and here we have a little lace mirror he is definitely worn down a little bit but at least he's mostly intact not too shabby of a fine but that is a little lace muric's now this guy kind of cracked me up so this is a short spine sea urchin complete with a couple of shells kind of hiding although he's not really fooling anybody but we won't tell him and the water comes and see how he's kind of like moving along and then and look at now he's kind of flipping over but then this big wave came and he managed to kind of keep himself anchored so i'm thinking their tube feet kind of help them stay upright looks like i'm picking up a couple things like this spiny jewel box he's relatively lumpy so i'm not going to quite go with the spiny jewel box and it looks like i also grabbed a cross barred venus and a piece of oyster there's a cross barred venus but this guy is alive yeah that's what they look like alive he's actually kind of on the big side actually they're kind of pretty even though they're really always just like that white and maybe like tan color on the outside but on the inside they have a real pretty like this like purple and yellow colors so that's the inside of a barred venus kind of interesting there these are always all over the place so this is definitely one that we should learn and a calico clam i just like them they're pretty and a little jingle a little black jingle it's so cool all the colors that you find on the beach now we're gonna pick up this bright orange coquina oh man i love those guys all right here we have something squishy i don't think it is a sandy skin tunica maybe it's a sea squirt maybe i can't really tell but it's a little squishy it's covered in shells i'm thinking it's alive i'm not going to give it a good squeeze to find out if it'll squirt anything so fairy i'll just put them back in the water when in doubt put it in the water all right here we have a little tiny florida fighting little itty bitty guy oh and this guy right this is in the moon snail family this is a gory norika also known as a colorful moon snail and i'm going to keep that one because i'm going to make a big old mirror covered in shells so this guy's broken on that one side so he would be perfect for that kind of activity or craft here we have a alphabet cone that has lost all its color for all intent and purposes we're just looking at a tan alphabet cone which i actually kind of think is neat so i'm going to keep that guy too now somebody had asked me what the eggs of a florida fighting conquer look like and i think it looks like spaghetti which this felt like this really felt like cooked spaghetti but i really don't think a tiny little florida fighting conk is gonna create all of that so i really don't know what that is if you know let me know shoot me a comment because it was just i don't know felt like spaghetti and here we have a calico scallop that has that sun ray pattern on it oh they're so pretty right and this guy i don't find these all that often this is a purplish tagulos i'm not sure if i'm saying that right but that is indeed what that is kind of looks like a razor clam it's got like thin it's supposed to be purple though so i happen to find this guy just to show you that other previous one was in really good shape but not really didn't have that great color that is really the color that shell is supposed to be hence its name the purplish tigulus here we have a shark eye piece of it yeah he looks like he'd be great for a mirror right some sort of craft yep thinks that's where he will reside eventually and look at this this was so big that is just a barnacle that is a striped acorn barnacle just all by itself and it was so big that i just found it wasn't even attached to anything i thought that was kind of cool all right and i think what i'm gonna show you here these are baby coquinas now you know i'm going like nuts lately over these coquinas and these were babies i don't know if you can really kind of see but they're just little itty-bitty ones oh cute little guys that was cool i'd never seen like the the the baby coquinas so i thought that was kind of fun i hope you guys can see that that's what those guys are maybe coquinas all right here we have ooh now he's actually quite good shape that is a sunrise venus clam hinged good shape i like that black accent color cool find and we have a a little tiny piece of a lightning whelk here's a shark eye oh now that is an awesome shark eye oh yeah he's not been snacked on no holes fabulous find oh so that is also a shark guy and shark guys are in the moon snail family that would have been a monster i never find anything that big down here but it looks like it's possible maybe one day and we got ourselves a broken olive hmm probably leave that and yeah i suspected but i had to at least give it a try broken lightning milk okay here we have a cut ribbed ark they are actually real pretty this one's a little worn down another one of these ubiquitous shells that are everywhere i think they're actually kind of pretty so that is a cut ribbed arc and here we have a prickly cockle and i was kind of hoping it was albino but i think it's just kind of had all its color washed off that's a florida prickly cockle and the reason i don't think it's albino is because there is a little bit of color on the inside so i'm thinking that the color just kind of got stripped away by the beach i still think that's kind of cool so we can kind of see in the distance still the fog hasn't quite rolled in yet it's a lovely day people are out and about and i'm still surf clam yeah i still think it's awesome you can see through it still all right we got ourselves another moon snail here's a shark eye that somebody looks like somebody put a hole in him possibly another shark eye they are cannibals those now we're on to this segment of where my husband finds all of the gorinorikas that were on the beach so this is the first one nice and colorful here is the second one he's not quite as colorful but still in real nice shape not chipped up or anything this guy again not as colorful as the one previous but it's still in relatively good shape and this guy too so yeah i think he got them all so we're not going to find any well we'll see he got a lot he also managed to find a couple cones some florida cones that first one he's pretty beat up with that second one it's got a little bit of color and this apple murex very sandy apple mirex now this is what i was talking about before here are two top snails that are not anything like that carmel color like the one i found earlier this guy see kind of that caramel color i've always found them to be that color but not these two one is much darker and one is much lighter so i thought that was really weird that we would find these two shells that are just so different from what they normally look like and a handful of olives i cannot speak if they are glossy or pointy and i will tackle that later on and a little rocks now that is a florida rock snail i don't find them often and that tripped me up for a long time and i still kind of hope that's what it is so that's what i'm thinking that guy is and some lightning welks they are very easy to tell oh and here we have a lightning whelk egg casing we found a couple of these in the past it looks like this guy is luckily i think is empty because those little marks there see those marks there there that's where they got it's a little bit thinner and the little shells can uh escape so this guy looks like he's empty so that makes me happy figured we just check it out and keep on moving all right here we got ourselves an olive really sandy olive and all right this is a lady is that lace or an apple i think maybe an apple covered with barnacles and a carrier shell and there's all sorts of beachy stuff going on there but maybe just a little bit too much for me i'll just pick up this little florida fighting conk and call it a day all right so we're marching our way south still i like the south end of the island because that tends to be where i find all the good stuff we're marching along well speaking of good stuff look at this little lace mirrors he's missing his laciness but he's still pretty i'm keeping that and this is the part of the video where the horse conch taunts me and says here have a piece but you're not getting the whole one but that's okay i swear i just find these pieces it's okay i'll find it one day one day so here i'm interested in these people who are just marching past all the shells and i'm wondering do you have great restraint are you insane i i'm not really sure what these people are thinking but they're not even looking at the ground i guess good for them so here's another here's a ponderous arc a hinged one and that black on those shelves is really really black that's kind of cool got a little bit of yellow on the inside it's kind of fun as a ponderous ark and another broad ribbed cardina got some kind of cool coloring he really has those ribs on it doesn't they kind of cool oh little pear whelk yep he's going on my mirror really pretty color it's a nice shell he's got a little chip but just on the one side so that's okay uh oh he's got a hole ah dang it look how pretty he is too that's okay it's only on the one side mirror shell all right here we have a short spined sea urchin that probably birds got to kind of pecked right through it but that piece in the middle i thought was kind of cool because we never get to see that that's called aristotle's lantern and it's the same name of a similar structure that's inside the sand dollar it's also called the aristotle's lantern we never get to see that i thought it was kind of neat poor sam you know poor sorry sea urchin but at least we got to kind of see something cool and we have another alphabet cone he is not the best example of an alphabet cone i've ever seen but i'm gonna keep it anyway and this is a prickly cockle this is another one the color is all wrong that's not the way they're supposed to be looks like it was probably a yellow prickly cockle but i like it because it's all tan not supposed to be and i think it's weird so i like it hello seabirds so here's our our turns and our seagulls i love those skimmers they are just the most awkward looking birds one of these days i'll get a shot of them i'll show you what a skimmer does it actually skims the top of the water and one of these days i'll get that shot here we have a spiny jewel box and he is a little bit spiny so we're not going to call him well he's still kind of lumpy but he's definitely spiny so we're just going to go with that the spiny jewel box and the shark eye and seaweed there we go he looks like he might be yeah he's a little broken but no it's okay a little shark eye and another rose petal talon super easy to tell what those guys are i can't think of any other pink shells i find on the beach so that's kind of neat and there is a sailor's ear kind of reminds me of the angel wing because they're both thin and white kind of neat so we're still marching down straight across the water there is lovers key and i'm telling you the fog is coming soon it's the wildest thing so no fog quite yet we're still just kind of marching down the beach and that was me trying to be quiet so you can enjoy it yeah okay and let's see what else we got another spiny jewel box and he's got that one one spine that is a spine jewel box just that one little piece i think they're neat all right looks like we got ourselves a lightning walk complete with a whole bunch of ivory acorn barnacles those actually those kind of like pop off relatively easy although it does leave a little bit of residue so you might want to if you're going to try to save that and get all that gunk off just kind of just something a little hard you can kind of pick that off look at this guy a spotted slipper snail he's kind of cool and there is all feathers and a piece of urchin and just all sorts of stuff and it looks like i rescued this little shark eye it's compacted with some sand i'll give him a nice home well hey guy what are you doing here we have a blue-eyed hermit crab in a florida fighting conch and he doesn't seem to want to come out come on buddy you want to see how pretty you are let's name him herme so this is herme the hermit crab see if we can convince him to come out come on hermie i'm taking you for a nice walk don't you want to come out want to see the view it's real pretty all right what about some birds hermie there's birds here want to come out now no okay so hermes not feeling like coming out and giving us a show so i'm just going to put hermi back in the water and let him do his hermit crab thing all right so we are going to talk about safety um you it can be treacherous walking along a beach that looks like this because the water is so close to the trees and trees mean that there's going to be stumps because the sand um the sea water rather will kill some of the different trees that are down here and then you're just left with these little pieces of really sharp things pointing out of the sand so i would say you want to maybe shuffle although that probably would encourage you like stubbing your toe which might not be so good and i guess at the end of the day all i would say is don't step where you can't see because if you can see where you're stepping you'll be okay but if you can't man you can really give yourself my husband broke a toe he uh definitely you know it can be treacherous so if you're in conditions like this don't step where you can't see here we have a little apple mirex oh dear somebody somebody drilled a hole in him but that's okay and an angel wing all right cool he'll probably clean up real nice let's put him in some bleach we got ourselves a little angel wing all right we found these earlier today here is another example of a channel the duck clam also known as a sailor's ear i think i'm just going to go with sailor's ear from now on sailor's ear all right we have ourselves something really cool now check this out i know it's a florida finding conch but there's no knobs zero knobs so this is a knobless florida fighting conch how cool is that now look at this guy this guy has the knobs so it's nice that i can we can kind of compare them so this is what a quote unquote regular florida fighting conquer looks like so that's kind of cool that we found a novelist one and this guy he's pretty oh a little baby scallop he's pretty it's a little brown and purplish and a lightning milk a little bitty lightning walk i thought this guy was kind of cool it's an olive completely missing it's top probably not glossy but i'm going to make an exception here because i really like the color and he's kind of been beat up a little bit that's neat oh who doesn't anyone like orange scallops raise your hand yep i'm raising my hand i love them and looks like another florida fighting conch yep but look all right guys i have read that the purple on the inside is like very rare only like one in a thousand shelves but i swear i find them all the time what do you think about the purple inside the florida fighting leave me a comment what do you think about that do you find them i do here we have a nutmeg there's a handsome little hearty shell and this is my favorite when the sun is just right and the water's clear and you can see right through it you can just pick the shelves right out of the water that's my favorite and i tried to conjure shells but it didn't work i ended up back on the beach look at the fog it's really rolling in now the visibility i'm maybe i don't know a couple hundred yards look at that crazy here is a calico scallop he is definitely discolored that uh light color or that gray color probably absorbed from the sand and look at this little guy now that doesn't look like a spider hence the name spider crab i figured we'd take a closer look at oh they're just so handsome like he he was really on the move i don't think he liked it all that much but look at him go yep that is a spider crab and we got ourselves another lightning welcome all right cool he's in real good shape it's got real nice color very cool oh i love those lemon-colored florida fighting conks oh they're awesome love that guy and just wanted to show you the fog again it was crazy it's still warm there was no problem like not like i wanted to leave the beach but the fog rolled in and it was just nuts look at that people are still on the beach i mean it didn't really i guess if you're on vacation it's a little fog but whatever man i'm going to the beach so this was a great variety of shows we found today the distosinias and a couple prickly cockles oh that lemon colored florida fighting and the knobless one which was really cool some more of those fighting conks of pear milk a couple of nutmegs a couple of lightening wax the olives ogres and whatnot some eurex some uh scallops some coral and then we'll circle to the middle where all those fabulous shark eyes moon snails cones just really fun nice variety of shells i'm giving it a big old thumbs up so thank you you guys are the best i love doing this i love bringing you to the beach every week so if you liked it i'm gonna ask you to go ahead and hit the like button and leave me a comment let me know what you thought see you again next sunday
