[Music] the year 1971 was a turning point for the united states on many fronts not only was the morale of u.s troops in the vietnam war very low but anti-war sentiment was ramped up when the largest ever anti-war demonstration happened in washington dc technology was also evolving with the introduction of the microprocessor and the very first email was also sent this year change also came to the constitution with ratification of the 26th amendment giving younger americans the right to vote 1971 was a great year for music too with some of the best loved albums of all time being released on january 8th pilot whales beach themselves on san clemente island off the coast of san diego california the school of wales were found perishing but no attempt was made to save the few that were still alive due to past experience towing them back out to sea where they would just swim back toward the beach the television show all in the family debuted on january 12th and it soon became the sitcom to watch starring carol o'connor gene stapleton sally strothers and rob reiner all in the family dared to go where no other sitcom had gone before tackling hot-button topics such as racism politics and feminism in a comical way on february 4th the nasdaq stock exchange was founded the national association of securities dealers automated quotations would be the first all-electronic stock market trading would officially begin on february 8th on february 9th baseball legend satchel page became the first negro league veteran to be nominated for the baseball hall of fame he would be inducted in august with joe dimaggio calling him the best and fastest pitcher he ever faced on february 10th ode records released tapestry the second solo album from singer-songwriter carol king the record was billboard's number one album for 17 weeks and it remained on the bestseller charts for six years on march 8th joe frazier ended muhammad ali's 31 fight win streak the fight was held at madison square garden where frasier retained the heavyweight boxing title by unanimous decision in a 15-round fight called the fight of the century frank sinatra was in attendance and he snapped a famous photo that would go on to be on the cover of life magazine march 28th brought the end of an era when the ed sullivan show aired its final episode prior to being canceled by cbs while sullivan's landmark program ended without a proper finale sullivan would go on to produce one-off specials for cbs until his death in 1974 including an ed sullivan show 25th anniversary special in 1973. on march 30th the very first starbucks coffee shop opened in seattle washington at pike place market the name starbucks came from the first mate character in the novel moby dick april 20th brought us the very first broadcast of national public radio npr went on the air with coverage of the senate committee on foreign relations hearings on the vietnam war the show all things considered followed a couple weeks later [Music] on april 24th 500 000 people demonstrated against the vietnam war in washington dc it was the largest ever demonstration opposing a u.s war simultaneously 150 000 people marched at a rally in san francisco prior to the massive rally vietnam veterans against the war staged a week-long series of demonstrations culminating in a protest at the u.s capitol where veterans threw back their service medals on june 13th the new york times began publishing the pentagon papers the publication of the papers which analyzed how the u.s commitment in southeast asia grew over a period of three decades created outrage with congressional and diplomatic reverberations at all levels of government the release of the papers began the debate about what constituted classified material and how much should be made available to the public [Music] on june 18th a new airline took to the skies over texas southwest airlines a low-cost carrier began their first flights between dallas houston and san antonio southwest airlines finally got off the ground after years of litigation from other texas carriers like braniff and trans texas airways on july 1st the 26th amendment which lowered the voting age from 21 to 18 was ratified by three quarters of the states to become part of the united states constitution nixon would go on to sign it into law on july 5th on august 31st john lennon left england for the final time and moved to new york city the move was brought on by the constant attention over the beatles breakup and the hostility of the london press toward linen and yoko ono [Music] on september 9th prisoners seized control of the maximum security attica state prison near buffalo new york prisoners held 39 prison guards and employees hostage for four days and after negotiations failed state police and prison officers launched a disastrous raid on september 13th in which 10 hostages and 29 inmates were killed as they took back control of the prison the start of october ushered in a new disney park with the walt disney world resort officially opening on october 1st magic kingdom the contemporary resort the polynesian resort and fort wilderness resort and campground were the first to open outside of orlando florida and on that first day in 1971 william windsor jr was the very first guest to enter the park on november 24th the night before thanksgiving a hijacker who called himself db cooper hijacked a northwest orient airlines 727 over washington state his demands included two hundred thousand dollars and four parachutes and once they were met he parachuted into a raging thunderstorm over the skies of washington the fate of cooper and whether or not he survived remains a mystery to this day on november 30th the emmy and peabody award-winning tv movie brian's song aired on abc the movie followed the friendship of chicago bears football teammates brian piccolo and gail sayers and starred james kahn and billy d williams on december 16th don mclean released his eight-minute version of american pie the song was initially inspired by don's 1959 memories as a paperboy when he heard about the plane crash that killed buddy holly richie valens and the big bopper to close out the year on december 19th cbs aired a television movie called the homecoming a christmas story this movie introduced the world to the walton family and it eventually led to the development of the tv series called the waltons a year later you
