in this video we are fixing up the 800 ford ranger on a budget getting it to reliably start run drive do all the things and make it a whole heck of a lot nicer on a budget [Music] all right headed out back to the glorious little range next day a day later and i guess we got these birds extracting some revenge on this truck i guess lesson learned don't park under this tree anyway um we're gonna see if it starts if it has battery i'd wager that it does but maybe it doesn't charge enough oh yeah no problem so i don't know if you can hear that something seems wrong with the power steering in this thing so i don't know exactly what it's not diagnosed yet but something's rotten in denmark and it doesn't feel quite safe so i'm going to explore that and explore the thermostat as well right now and then from there we can start doing everything else but i want to address the two big drivability concerns before we tackle much else so i never checked this yesterday i don't know what the level is but it's very foamy i don't know if you can see in there it's definitely quite foamed up so i'm assuming there's just a little leak somewhere and that's what's causing it to be all weird but i'm not sure and then next up we got the 4-0 in here and the thermostat is right under here from what i was looking at and also from the uh the leak and the spray that we were experiencing yesterday uh when it was overheating um it looked to be coming out of down here as well so that's what's giving me hope that it's the thermostat because it's been sitting and stuff so we shall take this off crack this open and try to get this thing fixed so it was certainly low on power steering fluid i got it topped off [Music] and filled back up so hopefully we're like right at the max level so we'll see give it a quick start and i don't know maybe that fixes the steering problem i doubt it i really highly doubt it but who knows nope still weird i think there's just air so we just got the old thermostat out there's the new one just plop that in here still have to get the bolts on and the hose on um but we also realized it has slim coolant levels minimal and that's not what you want so we're doing a first fill with water and non-diluted coolant that's why we're doing straight water right now but you can hear that thing is thirsty all right the 10 mil do not leave me do not leave jumping out 10 mil is most important so we just got the thermostat in uh everything is put back together so now time to start it bleed the coolant and then give it a rip in the yard we'll see if it overheats in the safety of the yard we got the whole crew here and we're going on the first test drive since the new thermostat and it's pinned right in the middle not at the top which is good news so we're gonna keep taking it out just a little bit longer i hate this bird crab but uh you might be able to see the front end's actually not that bad it's just when you turn it's a little wonky yeah it's not good but it's if it didn't overheat i could have driven it home so i don't think i ever showed you what all came with the truck and didn't show you the interior either but we have a new rack and pinion for it uh already purchased right here a premium remanufactured one for the truck this was mine those were mine and then some old spring shocks something i don't know why these were included if they were just the old ones and need to go back on same with this old brake pad i think yeah there's the second one but the cool part the thing that i like the most is this headache rack um so we have the headache rack uh i got it off i'm gonna clean it and then spray it back to black so it's nice fresh looking jet black instead of well crusty and old so gonna clean it up and then spray it with something so we just swept out all of the crap that was in the bed tons of natural stuff and tons of trash as well um lots of rusty parts little brake pads looks like a mower blade but we have a moderately clean bed now much better than it was anyway just took off all the tires and i'm going to spray them uh got some cheap masking materials some primer and some metallic paint as you can see here and i'm sure we will be transforming these in a major major way because of all the the fading and then this one being painted black to have them all congruent and all the same color i mean you can see all the crap that's on this one versus how they'll look after which you'll get to see right now just got the prime coat on looking way way way way better and congruent most importantly they're all the same now i got the mask on as you can see we got the paint right here the half folder for masking so i don't over spray on the tire anyway pretty simple so we just got the wheels on and i'm very happy with the turnout um and i decided let's try to throw on this headache rack this bar thing and i'm gonna go around to the other side actually i think it looks good but it it doesn't fit really so i might take it back out because i like how this looks minus the the headache rack i think it looks a little bit more adult a little professional more professional anyway so i think this can be included on the side um but it does look better or it could be sold separately so now we are tackling the interior we got the vacuum right here and i've started um i took out a very old crusty horrible floor mat and got this side the previous owners definitely had their fair share of cigarettes in here and i believe based on this they even rolled their own so there's quite a bit of both ash and pre-burnt tobacco and maybe some other stuff not to uh throw the previous owner under the bus here in the midwest where uh a certain green substance is illegal anyway we gotta clean that up totally fine not a big deal there's just gunk it's dirty it's gross this is a bummer this is a big time bummer because there's going to be tape residue all over the seat regardless of how it looks i wish it could be super glued as always anyway moving up we have a sagging falling headliner which is what the pins are for and then this that needs to be replaced i think it's just going to be taken off entirely and thrown in the trash unless we could find a new one i don't know that they're saving this but here's a shot of up top as i got it i guess i didn't really tour the interior and then here's all the grit the low light grit sorry about being in the barn in the shop right now but there's all the [Music] there's all the junk and debris and trash it definitely wasn't cleaned out prior to sale as you could tell by how the paint looked um anyway gonna finish this up and then move on to the next so now we've moved outside you can see a little bit better what it looks like again i already did this side with a quick preliminary vacuum and also started pinning up the headliner definitely have a lot more to do but here's the progress thus far so i got a nice little preliminary vac done and the headliner pinned up um i untaped the seat and you could see there's a tiny rip well moderate sized rip i'm not going to be able to do anything about these but i'm hoping praying that i can get this adhesive out of cloth which i think will be a tough job i've never tackled it before um hopefully get all of this and then reupholster the seat so that you don't have the big tape situation or any of this sticky gross adhesive so we are working on the range it's a beautiful day and i just wanted to update you with the progress report i didn't have my phone my camera set up uh on too much of the bodywork but man does this thing look better i'll uh step out oh that looks so good especially like from back here with the sun with the rays man it looks like a completely different truck than we bought because well kind of turned it into one down here i did some amateur body work that you can't see um too well on camera up close it's not perfect and then uh really rough bodywork on the back of the bed just to eliminate some of the visible rust if someone cared enough care deeply to fix this thing and make it nice they would just replace the whole bed given what it looks like over here all the dents all the crap so i didn't mind hacking and hobbling together uh this section of the lower bed it's not perfect got some overspray on some places but man does this look better than it did um so i'm happy with the result i'm happy with the yield it didn't cost really anything other than a little bit of paint on the tip of my finger so this looks so good so good um what else can update you on the interior as well uh and then give a little tease a little spoiler to what is coming next i got the um tape off super glued the seat and you can see it looks gross i dyed this back to black because i didn't know how to get the adhesive up but now it's not sticky as maybe you can see but this isn't good we got stains there i mean the interior's not not perfect but it's better than it was which is a plus so anyway now if you remember there were no running boards on this side and then we had the running board on the other side that was a team effort by myself mike and parker to drop the phone to jump on um and we got the we got the running board off so we got it off the passenger side we got it purchased it off of the driver's side but i want to get those little legs those attachment points out of here so i was thinking about cutting them i was thinking about cutting them with this and if it comes down to it that we'll have to do but we have this right here and hopefully we can blast them off with the impact because seeing this is not a good look i would much rather be clean like they were never there but worst case we will cut it back to there and then hit it with some truck bed coating uh some undercoating that way it blends in more with the underside regardless so they're not as visible they don't come out far enough to cut you which is good but there's definitely progress to make so i'm going to try to do a better job of setting up the camera and see if i can get the right socket size first off and then blast it with the impact maybe some pb blaster first um to penetrate the rust and go from there hope for the best fingers crossed there's one so i was able to get the fronts off on both sides with the uh impact super easily power tools for the wind but we're going back old school uh to be able to access access the one that's back here oh got him driver's side is done moving over to the passenger a little bit of sweaty mess but it's worth it well worth it check it out that looks so much cleaner oh my goodness let's go over to the passenger side compare this to how it looked when we got it we'll get that sun out of here it's insane huge unreal transformation so so so much better anyway i think that's really that's really it for the cosmetics we just have to uh drop it off at the shop to get this installed the uh the new part i can't even think of what it's called rack and pinion there we go so that'll wrap up this video part one of fixing up the 800 danger range hopefully you liked it if you did be sure to like hit the subscribe button down below you
