[Music] all right here we got a 96 Cummins not a not a Dodge we got a Cummins as we all love the engine but the truck had a few issues one of the biggest issues was suspension on these trucks we got a massive heavy engine and if you've ever heard of death wobble every little piece of steering wears a little bit and your tires are chasing each other going down the road and you will need to change your underwear but Jaron from comments yep you fixed it I did I did - we'll drive 96 2500 14 years I think we've had transmissions been rebuilt surprise had a head gasket for a coolant leak a lot of failure the engine just wear out over time before at inner outer tie rods on both sides and then it had center link joints and then it had the wear point at the bottom of the box and the wear point at the end of the pitman arm steering box dates back to mid 60's sometimes yeah so the frames and everything is basically the same right yep now it's all rack and pinion okay you don't use any of the factory mounting for the box well in some sleeves into the front crossmember to mount the rack so now all we have were inner and outer tire outs on both sides and there's no actual wear joints out here other than those new joints but that'll last 200,000 miles yeah here's the new rack so you had to cut a hole in here yep I think we use the hole saw on this side on the back side there's not enough room okay so plasma cutter okay you gain access to it you have to bend the brake lines out of the way a little bit bend it out weld it in not a huge problem there other than that it's either factory second gen stuff or factory third gen stuff other than one hose adapter okay take take us through what you did so source the rack the rack is from an o-5 208 35 25 or 1500 they're all identical for the tool drives so we got that tie rods haven't had the same taper same size everything for these knuckles so bolts right up so you can hang the rack find the tie rods on this you have to mount the rack to the frame so we got some heavy wall pipe or tubing so I said pipe for the frame its steering it's very critical we've got to make sure it's structurally sounds so I think it was inch and a half diameter ID or OD and then 5/8 ID okay so nice heavy wall yeah so what you guys gotta understand too is a gerund is the safety inspector at covering around sized it for the bolts and hardware that we wanted and then sized it to position the rack forward and backwards as needed it's too far forward when you go over bumps you're gonna have bump steer okay so you'll have some geometry issues with that so measured everything up and actually got it on the forum all the rough measurements and stuff that I had done but then that will get the rack mounted to the frame okay so there's there's the bolt with coming through on the other end with the hole that was plasma cut and the pipe that went through and then the brake line that's around it and then the same thing that's you see the bolt sticking through the brake line and that's all there is to it that's actually pretty so now the racks mounted you have to have now worried about the steering shaft so factory steering column in the truck nothing modified one of my things I like is keeping things to where they go back to original got the steering box and the barn in the back this ever fails I can go back to stock but we were lucky enough because we got the rack from the salvage yard from the third gen and they needed shortened so cut some of the splines off compress it a little bit still have some compression for erect and then had to use a carbide bit to grind out some of the coupler because they call it a BB fitting but it's these on either side and flat on top and bottom on the half or the second gen trucks it's more rounded on top so we had the machine that aluminium so her bite bit few hours we actually had a test cab sitting there so I could test it on a cab without having to scratch anything here test fit everything I think we had to bend the motor mount ear a little bit to make room for the rack steering shaft adapter deal yeah but unfortunately it only works for two-way currently I'd say yeah the axle the way the four-wheel drive axle moves you would have to have the rack mounts to the axle and then make the steering shaft go to that the only real problem with this setup is it's very tight to the frame before drive the suspensions already lower and once you have the axle drop or articulation it's not gonna work the way I have it set up okay so when you're talking four-wheel drive to take to the frame like you're you're talking up top here the input from the steering shaft from the top of the rack yep you see the motor mount up there yeah took your oh yeah yeah yeah so the shaft is very tight to it we actually had to bend the motor mount a little bit to make it fit okay so if you have the axle and axles gonna be about the same centerline of these of this axle yep it's gonna be lower so you have to get everything down lower to meet that axle and then your steering this but now you're steering yeah you got to make that it's almost a 90 degree Bend yeah so if you could get bass another servo another source of the problem if you could come up with slip joints you joints can add more of those where points but as far as the rack itself goes it's far superior to anything Ram has put on a second Jim once we got that in the hoses for the high pressure side on the factory second gen stuff bolts into the rack factory hose unhook it it's actually got the original one that's been there since 96 so thread it on I think we use the new o-ring but the big deal if I would spend eight okay it came with everything but then the outlet so I don't know why they did it on the box but the inlet and outlet are the same size right we've all watched a ve online now your inlet is always smaller than your outlet anything new so we have this huge outlet coming out of the rack and a smaller one that goes into the pump reservoir from the original return so five six dollar Amazon barbed adapter a short section of hose that fit it and then an adapter to go into the factory return for this that looks really really clean really good yeah there's some excess hose here I couldn't get the fittings off of the power steering pump okay how to replace the wine I actually did purchase new one four hundred thousand miles seems like a smart thing yeah but I couldn't get the fitting out without starting the term stuff that wasn't supposed to turn okay so that's in the works hopefully once it's warm out again yeah get everything finished there if you had all the parts sitting there you could pull this in at eight o'clock and by five o'clock drive out with everything put in right so your whole budget on that with three hundred and fifty us it was if you went with a new rack which this racks been out of the wrecked truck for quite a while I think it's got one or two little tight spots okay so my next upgrade or update on it probably a new Iraq one that's not got hopefully a little wear and one sticky spot other than that I mean 350 bucks took a lot of time on like Rock Auto they've got all their measurements I spent days planning everything out but it's been well worth it a truck I mean you literally have this much play in the steering wheel before the tire turns got to give it a little throttle so the first bit once it's in gear okay so your dad bought this truck with you or thirteen thirteen eighth grade okay and he bought it with the intentions of me eventually driving outdoors yeah it's tight but work a few times I drove it if you're going fast enough but you turn it fast it feels like yeah I'm sure that's just the truck what does shmita finally gooseneck you would drive down the road crosswind drive through a section that's feel the winds pushing on you you gotta compensate so you turned into the wind yeah you come up on trees now you gotta uncompensated you're going towards the ditch as you're driving along it's Indiana they work fields everywhere with tree lines so you're doing this two times my pitches hits new pain yeah let's drive two hours with the trailer never going back that's it pulls a little concert yeah but you have different angles on the road for water yeah that's right yeah there's no wobble a little shake and this thing's got 400,000 for 67 or 67 so that is 6 under than it's getting up there more yeah million cool ok yeah it's it's been a good truck it's a little vibration at speed I don't know if it's driving four tires - you're saying one less turn a lot yep so I think it was just three and a half turns for the box - thanks so where we going now this is airplane thing yeah so this is the Cummins corporate aviation hangar Cummins has facilities all over the country and for us it's yeah corporate jets inside all come inspired yes six seven turns yeah yeah just yeah you sell this for my asking price for this if anybody is so inclined 15 to 20 you know so the kit you saw the track oh the truck no no the kit I wouldn't sell me it so you can do it yourself a 300 or I could do it for over fifteen thousand fifteen hundred do away with all that steering nonsense cause you're gonna have that in a good box and tie rods plus alignment all that this was a tape measure alignment I put three thousand miles on it you're just really it's your toe in and Toho's all your charge yeah everything there will be a small commission thank you very much for touring if you guys have any projects that you guys want to have on the channel fill out the submission form down below or that whatever the form down below and even as simple as taking parts from another generation putting it on older generation to make it better we love these ninety-six is the peat pumps it's about the perfect track other than work on that but we love seeing it so definitely get out there work on your projects make them better we all know that all the manufactures get it wrong from the start so fix it yourself and make it your own remember if you're not filthy you're not rich here we go [Music]
