First day of van life

good morning everybody as you saw from our last video we rented Jolene from our friends and over the next few weeks we're going to take her around pretty much the southwestern western side of the US um why I want this stay open we are completely new to Van life we have no idea what we're doing but today is the first day that we are heading out and my job this morning is to figure out how to put water in the water tank yeah okay need this and this I think that's the water filter and the hose goes in that end and this goes ah I think goes in here I crawl in here you can kind of see right here that's our water tank and I stopped the water when it gets to around here so it doesn't spray everywhere CH has to change or do something with brake fluid so I definitely got the easier job of the two of us oh lot of space down here [Music] here and done all right that was easy hey hey well done wait that's it I just had to top it off when you said changing the brake fluid I thought changing I said topping off the brake FL I gave you I gave you the option which one you wanted do how' the water thing go yeah it was it was fine way more complicated than whatever you just did I just topped it off like packed everything back let just have it we're getting off to a much lighter start than I thought we would all these little Tails it's time to say goodbye bye see you [Music] guys all right ready the road again hey hey again we forget anything probably did but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it how's it going only in the US does a gas Punk play an advertisement to you the entire time you're filling up there's no way to mute it stand the advertising there man the worst part about this country sorry that sounded really that sound super netive I just don't like advertising Dr cruso just rewiring yourself and getting some sun all right that wasn't too bad as $26 for a little bit more than a quarter of a tank so it looks like we can fill this thing up for about $100 and we go you can go like 300 miles 350 Mi probably it actually gets almost 20 m a gallon on the highway so that definitely beats paying for a motel room mhm onwards I don't think we've talked about where we're going today you should do it this time since I stole your Thunder yeah my goodness so we decided this morning that we're heading to Joshua Tree it is 5 just under 5 hours away yeah I think we're going to get there after dark just because we got such a late start today it's 2:00 p.m. we were super ambitious I thought we'd be out out and about by like 10: but we ended up having to do way more than we thought I think first day's always Rocky until we get the hang of everything I think yeah for sure n [Music] heyo all right how you feeling you're driving the tank I know this feels intimidating to be fair I Learned to Drive in my dad's truck I think I'm good I think I'm good if I can ride in Vietnam I can do this just as long as you watch your feed okay that that was was funny is that we asked that a few Vlogs ago if which one of us is the speeder and it was like almost unanimous everyone said it was me were they right yes but like I still don't want people to assume it's me TI is actually a great driver I just like to give her a hard time you do speak more than I do though it's cuz I'm efficient all right guys this drive has been pretty uneventful I think we're just going to try to get to Joshua Tree and make this day more about the destination than the long boring journey I guess yeah driving into the [Music] sunset walk empty I can't see anything we made it it's what 9 it's just after 9 oh my gosh this A rock you okay it's a rock look at how beautiful this view is we are in a campground and $25 a night but it has running water M we figured until we really explore the cap Phillies we want to have you know at least at least for hygiene and stuff yeah anyways it's like it just turned 9 we're not going to see anything tonight but we're in Joshua Tree do you want to make dinner yeah I'm so hungry okay you have to really slam it about to wake everybody up okay so Tia is making dinner and I I've been given the task of figuring out how to cover all these windows cuz it's a little weird right now everyone can see us moving around this is a pretty crowded Campground I'm pretty sure everyone's staring at the two people slamming their door ah no one cares it's fine okay oh wow is that it no that's for yeah that's for the I don't think that's right for the windshield it seems promising I didn't really think about what a big thing privacy would be oh my gosh don't remind me how cute is that oh man oh my God I'm too tired for this then I think what's for dinner love um tuna sandwiches and Asian salad nice is it pretty good yeah not okay this toaster is heating up the entire space very nicely and for additional context it wasn't cold in here it's still pretty cold it was got a toaster in our little van it's tossed salad oh my God it's kind of hard to get used to using such a limited amount of space I feel like when I cook I usually spread everything out I didn't even use the stove top by the end of this trip though I'm going to be making steaks on there is that your goal maybe Cheers Cheers that's lovely that was a crunchy bite I can't wait for tomorrow [Music] good morning everybody good morning I actually slept pretty well last night I did too it was very quiet it got a little cold but we have another blanket I'm just too lazy to get it up there that we just didn't honestly what it looks like outside hey there's mountains oh yeah oh they have those famous rocks too uh oh yeah so [Music] bright it looks a bit like an alien planet no I expect to see like Giant GI bugs crawling over the peak or something I love the way these cacti and different plants look pretty sure none of these are Joshua trees but still look at that isn't that so cool it just looks neat I don't know man I believe the plan is to go for a short hike it's going to be really hot today we're going to try and go for a hike as soon as we figure out how to make coffee in this van one of us or both of us or just a certain number of people are kind of kind of cranky excuse me I love you I love you apparently there is a trapo hatch on the right hand side of the bed oh wow there's a full size protane tank in here okay it should be on now you check it yeah oh yeah yeah [Music] cheers my darling cheers first coffee in the van yeah that went off without a hitch it only took me a very long time no that's beautiful it's perfect oh that's so good okay I promise I'm going to be nicer no no you've been perfect you've been perfect so T has decided the best hike I don't think that's closed oh my gosh you have to the button I pushing the button and then push locked go the best hike is up the road a little ways first can we go see the the choya cactus garden thing yeah of [Music] course shio says I have to wait until the end of the trip to say this but I could totally do van life like full time this is so much fun it is fun but I'm just saying there are down sides that I don't think we're going to be aware of until the end of the trip or until we get further into it like the toilet situation I think that bothers you more than bothers me I've already volunteered to take care of it so [Music] it's so cute these are called teddy bear choya I believe and that alone is why we stopped but but look how cute they are they're just like Yay High T go and they're like in a huge patch of them and it just like concentrated in this one area and they're just like the fuzziest looking Cactus I've ever seen I just want to like no that's not a you want to hug it yeah probably shouldn't touch it look pretty Pokey just a Grove of Troya cacti out here in the middle of the desert and this time of year I think is like when everything is blooming cuz we walked uh we drove by what are this called aaos and they were blooming and there's some little tiny cactus that are blooming and it's just there's nothing prettier than desert flowers blooming cuz like it's Against All Odds that they're even here and for them to be that pretty you know and one of the cooler parts of these Cactus cacti um it's actually it's skeleton it looks like this and a lot of people including my parents make uh jewelry out of that which is really neat oh look at it there it is oh so pretty [Music] wow looks like the parking lot's full oh look at all the people crawling all over oh really oh yeah huh I think oh skull right do look like a skull cool that's actually pretty impressive do you want to stop uh I think I got it okay sorry you guys after almost 3 years of traveling we've learned that we would rather go to somewhere that is 90% as pretty with no people than a really famous place like that that are covered in people or I guess crawling with people technically sorry I also think we just reached the Joshua Tree section of the park these are all Joshua trees [Music] how's it going love that's our first van mishap guess we have to throw this away when we drive it could be way worse yes true so these are X bars we've been eating these I'm trying to be a little healthier we used to be really healthy people and it's just not happened when we've been traveling three egg whites 14 peanuts two dates and no BS those are the ingredients they're actually pretty good 14 gr of uh protein lunch we're at the place where we're hiking mhm we're just yeah [Music] have you ever seen a josa tree before no I had no idea that there are like actual like trees it's kind of like a cross between a cactus and a tree huh I've seen pictures of this part but I never knew it had like actual like a tree trunk and they get they get massive I had no idea you would never know it just driving through the desert looks kind of lifeless but you get out of the car and you start walking through it and it's teaming with life there's all these plants there's birds everywhere making a ton of noise there's lizards scurrying off the trail there's bugs everywhere that's cool I love that I there's something very fascinating to me about life existing in places where it [Music] shouldn't whenever I'm hiking with Chio I know at some point on the hike he's going to make me climb up something look at him what are you doing come on this is where the good stuff is I love him this is what eight years gets you up a rock through a little cave oh my gosh where'd you go it's me I'm trivio oh my God over here good yeah very strong oh my God all right you got it do you want me to take the you want me to take the camera how am I get the camera over to you excellent point back up very nice now that is a million dooll view definitely worth a clam no one out here so there's a couple campers down there but besides that no one I love how in that direction The Boulders are big and bulky and then over there like little tiny Boulders stacked on top of each other so cool this is this is so freaking pretty never seen anything like it [Music] no oh he's really still yeah he is [Music] [Music] all right here is our dinner situation we're having egg burritos with avocado and salsa pretty basic pretty basic yeah anyways also got one of these this is cherry almond Gorgonzola salad so it just keep getting better and better but we wanted to show you guys the place that we parked up for the night this place is so cool can you are you at a stopping point yeah all right check this out it just it simply does not get better oh my gosh we're just in the middle of uh BLM land BLM land so for those who aren't familiar you can park for free on BLM land and of Land Land Management yeah not all of it but a lot of it anyways we're just we're totally alone this place is awesome the temperature is perfect right now the Sun is setting you can see the light hitting the mountains over here the snow on them which is insane oh my gosh this is beautiful and it's free amazing our total expenses today was a half a tank of diesels $50 so not too bad not bad at all before we go we did forget in the last Vlog to do our postcard giveaway it just a very chaotic day I'm
