play like a jet once that was a punch line now it's the command of a coach determined to change his team's identity all right hey tonight's message real simple right there's a lot of guys in this room that won't be here next time we play that's a fact okay that's an unfortunate fact but that's national football league there's a lot of spots up for grabs more than i can ever remember on a team there's eight practice squad spots as well eight of them it's there for you it's there for you if you want to do what if you want to pay the price if you want to be physical and play with that passion that it takes to be a new york jet that's what we want that's what the new york jets are all about and that's what we've been saying from day one when you got that decal on on the side of your helmet you're special play like a new york jet and you got a hell of an opportunity to be here four weeks of camp have taken their toll the jets have decided to rest nearly all their starters for their final preseason game [Music] you know many guys are going to play in this game we told them today ben and i went through the whole roster including three kickers 36 guys are playing this football game one roster spot has been harder to fill than the rest so you and i are up we're going right now to reuse this house all right you got your big boy pants on yeah these guys are you scared for what i think the whole thing is you guys should speak from your heart we need you no question about it team knows we need you but if you're not here then we're going to find a way anyway no we went over to his house today me and dt but nobody was there you know you guys have such stamina i don't know how many hours have we gotten through this we've got hundreds they remain convinced that we will either fold after week two or we'll train next year no matter what that kind of know me very well i've been at this for 11 years now so i've been through a lot of a lot of players this has gone on longer than most their their response is next year you'll be fed up with it you'll get a one of them why would it be any more fed up next year and you'll want to cut your losses you're going to have any losses i have no losses it's all good so if i'm if you think i'm stressed i can assure you i'm not stressed at all you know every deal's a new deal every player has to be handled kind of in a little bit individually and this one has gone in a way that i didn't predict it would go and we'll see the way it ends it's time to move on to football go go with what we got we're in new york you know you can't hustle us he's not in this room and that's how we have to treat it we're not going to sit and wait and say we'll be good when he gets back both we're perfectly capable of being a great defense now camp is winding down for the vets this week is the last respite before the riggers of the regular season that's way right what's over there i got stronger during training camp where are my princess my kids for my princess for bart scott's backups it's sink or swim not a time to coast so you take those backup linebackers and enter them in the tour de france huh good lord every time you turn around one of those guys over there how are you ever going to put them in the game you're going to play them on defense the bicycle group they stink rookie linebacker brashton satellite has spent much of camp spinning his wheels with an injury and injuries can distort a coach's view satellite has just one week to prove he can play [Music] he's got a chance nice job tough times don't last tough people do that's just what i keep on believing and i'm gonna become what i believe so i believe i'm healed i believe i'm gonna be here so that's what i gotta keep on saying to myself now is not the time to be standing on the sidelines number 43 jason davis and number 32 chauncey washington are fighting for reps in the jet's crowded backfield washington has been on three different teams in three years and spent the first part of training camp near the bottom of the depth chart that's it that's it so chauncey's got no chance you're telling me how yeah i hear you're stacked at tailbone you have three guys ahead of you so he's got to be impressive in the jet's second preseason game he was and he gets away a beautiful kick on the back pedal it's fielded and loose at about the 50-yard line fumbling the football oh what a hit what a pitch yeah oh was that a hit holy was that a hit jonathan washington a reserve running back down there on that coverage somebody wants to make this team that's what happens you get a guy that's got no chance and look what the hell happens plays himself on the damn roster i'm going to make sure we give a game ball to chauncey washington outstanding one game isn't going to do the job to be on this roster you can you can't make mistakes you know everything has got to be perfect because the next guy is good you only get so many snaps a day chauncey i like johnson he's a bigger back i think you can do more things with chauncey but the volume of our offense he struggles with and he's working at it though i give him credit we meet before practice we meet after practice between practice but right now i just think he's struggling with the system a little bit he's working awful hard i mean he's doing whatever it takes if he doesn't make this team he's got nothing to feel ashamed about because he's putting it all out there jason davis is the third fullback on a team which only has room for two hat placement inside number baby inside number jason davis a little surprised because he's pressing a little bit i think the pressure of the competition and being in camp competing for the job i don't see the same confident guy that i saw in otas and the guy saw him minicap clearly it's you know tony richardson and john connor and then i think jason davis a good football player but he's yet to distinguish himself like those two have t rich came back fine you know john kind of got drafted fine so i'm the other guy so what so what i can care less you know i don't get frustrated with them this is a business you better go all right i don't care that i i haven't took any rest with the ones i don't care i haven't took any rest with the twos because i don't give where i'm at on the depth chart i care about what i can control i'm out here every day i feel myself getting better the limited reps i have i watched the film he only got two reps in last week's game they were two hard ass reps and i did my job everyone has a breaking point today jason davis reaches his davis desperately in need of reps turns them down 22 jd you rolling no no three twenty two four two let's go you're tripping jack don't give up now man it's too close you said if you were gonna quit then you should have quit a while ago don't quit on your boy now you know we ain't promising you i'm a starting fullback in this league regardless of whether they see it or not it's all about the opportunity and the timing and so all that man you don't worry about all that you know number 10 santonio holmes is the only jet starter who'll play in the final preseason game then he'll serve his four-game suspension number 87 david clowney number 15 larry taylor and number 27 danny woodhead are all vying for the chance to replace holmes during his absence each one is a little bit different you know we're looking at apples oranges and a banana larry frankly i was i was a little disappointed come on show us some balls run that thing out of there i thought if he could be our punt returner emergency receiver emergency running back wow he's tough to beat danny does it all does it all pretty well the question is will it be quite well enough clowney he should be the guy that can do it he's got the most talent it it we just haven't seen it those guys all know they're all aware that this is you know it's getting to the point where they have to do something they have to perform at five six larry taylor is a little man in a big man's world peter received a bit receiving bigger stephen yeah well you got to be special if you're back there near that size you better be special i mean you're going to throw this guy in a slide there's no way you can't find them danny woodhead a running back will have to play some wide receiver to make the team who's got that little wood head again there you go david whoa killing it i see you out there white chocolate wait around a lot of guys are they're going to look into numbers how many are at this position how many are at that position you can't do that otherwise your your mind's going to go crazy all you can do is do what you can every single play to make the team and when it comes to the the cut day or whatever things things are going to work themselves out knowing that we don't have a fourth receiver for the first four games you know just would have become part of that discussion is he a better football player than clowney right now danny woodhead because he's played two teams he does do 5000 different things clowney i keep getting the same thing we know what he can do but you can't get on a kickoff team he's not good enough to play with those guys and i'm wasting him on a punt team right now it ends up being more utilitarian because he doesn't clown he doesn't make a difference for us west off expects a lot out of me you know i've known that for a while now go ahead west all cussing out everybody over here i asked for first point versus eagle punt return and i know rex ryan you know he expects a lot out of me too and it's my job to make sure i go out there and you know handle that responsibility i mean i wanted to have that you know give us anything close to what you gave us last preseason that's what i'm waiting to see i'm not going to see any have any doubt that i'm not going to be here my mind is that i'm going to be here and i'm going to be a jet right there who's got david i need one for david there it is right there again i'm going to continue to think that way until that time come i don't think that time will come anytime soon hey if you need any pointers seth to do the story on the outback and he went to this ranch he said what's your most important tool and he said the dog the sheepdogs and he said well where do you get them and he said what we do we go to the breeder then we pick the smallest one of the litter sort of the runt and we mark them with a like a yarn and we identify them then we come back in a couple months if that dog that we identified is alive if he survived that's the one we want he started off not at the top of the heap but we know he had to be one of the toughest he had to be the hardest working he had the most wherewithal and he had to be a cunning and he had to figure it out or he wouldn't have survived then they take the one that they picked and this is what's interesting to me they bring him back to the ranch and now they put him in with the other dogs they give him one day one day to see how he does if he makes it then that's what they want if he doesn't he's destroyed they kill him they drown them now we're not talking about tying any of you up in a sack although we we have discussed it we're not talking about that [Music] some guys are drafted and i mean that's fine but you tell me the difference between someone who starts out at the bottom of the pile and makes it because they have those very qualities this is football you want to be a jet beat this you want to find a way on the team that's how you over to get two yards outside the emo last thing and you got him if there ain't anything there run it if not we might go four down territory so just throw that away it's definitely a touchdown second out ball fakes or anything else because we can't hold on to the football what if get in there play tail back no you won't fumble all right let's do it here we go run the ball down their throat let's go yes sir [Music] they love danny woodhead but where does he fit in danny woodhead makes it about as hard as possible to cut a 5-9 flight you want to go back to mcknight or keep let danny roll him it's up to you i keep danny going and a player desperately trying to prove his worth and make this team once again is danny woodhead back to throw up a play action fake looks right throws one deep over the middle caught by santonio holmes across the middle of the field to 15. it's loose and the jets recover we got it back we got it back who was that chauncey how about the hustle by chauncey washington he just made the team right there bob that second effort that's a guy that wants to play in the nfl that's way to hustle and get that ball all right let's run it up there again danny woodhead is the eye back running left cuts it back slightly to the right and he gets inside the tent inside touchdowns eagle killer hey nice job danny hell of a player man this makes plays he's got nothing look at that look at that that way one head and running right behind another guy trying to make the team is a full back jason davis [Music] with open roster spots down to a precious few every snap matters the snap drops back steps up in the pocket pumps once throws the default down the left side run run intended for taylor who got hung up along the sideline i could have taken him early i got greedy to larry i don't know where he's at he's not running we just fumbled again guys another jets fumble here in the preseason ball well at least at least at least they didn't score on it the new rule after the first half is that if you fumble you have to come out sure enough again i wasn't trying to trying to throw a touchdown and be a hero so mark brunell has to come back in for more simple thing it's one of the most important things there is in football though in there all right now hey i appreciate every one of you unfortunately we can't keep everybody you guys know that we can't keep everybody that's the nature of this business but we appreciate what you did for the new york jets and you're all jets all right it's going to be some tough decisions to make but i'm proud start phantom players the first 19 we could go get so uh you got to help there cole get all these guys don't here they should be here good workouts this morning the only good news today is no news at all if any member of the staff approaches a player the end is near larry and come with me man did a lot of good things pre-season and uh you know offering special teams i mean there's i mean there's a lot to be proud of um you know right now you're not gonna be part of the 53. and i mean we're not shutting the door on practice squad but right now we're just we don't have the spot all right you got looking for that guy and there's no reason why it can't be you you got to work out every day like you're still a professional athlete like you're not in college anymore and the worst thing you can do looking bleak for a while after multiple conversations between rex woody myself just didn't look like a deal was made i said you know what let's look at one other idea so we called them sometime after midnight they wanted to get something done we wanted to get something done believe me you know i'm not trying to keep everybody up till uh you know 1 30 in the morning we're we're on the field agreement that is reported to be a four-year deal for 46 million dollars with 32 million guaranteed all right he's late enough let's go it's going cover good job great good job we got it done how happy it's like you're a happy guy that was three days of hell about three hours sleep each day but we got it done here we go baby i can't wait i can't wait i can't just wait to practice he'll be pulling in about five minutes knock out the paperwork and he's all yours baby yes yes yes the 2010 jets are finally complete their long climb toward a lombardi trophy begins and with it a chance to
