recently we switched over to D Vinci resolve for our video editing workflow and that just completely opened the door to a New World of Color grading I was contacted by the team at uh de Hano and yeah they asked me do I want to play around with the Plugin Review it you know see how it works and give my feedback on it so I've been messing around with it for about a month or two now and I just can't believe how easy it is to Chuck your footage in and just get a cool look within a couple clicks so yeah what I want to do is basically just show you how I use the hanser how I found it's easy you know to take my SL log 3 footage and and get a cool look out of it cool so if we jump into resolve you'll see on the color tab under the effects window the enhancer is right at the bottom so all we need to do is just drag it and drop it onto our node so essentially you can feed deaner a Rec 709 so you can do your whole color transform um and all of that workflow but what I like to do and what they've got in here is you can choose your camera and uh we shoot on Sony A7 fors uh there they are and S log 3 S gamma 3 cine so straight off the bat essentially this is uh what Deans spits out and Yeah essentially we can now go and tweak the image how we want on Mac if you hold down option um on these little tabs and click and then on Windows I think it'll be alt you just uh yeah all in option and click and it will collapse all the different tabs that you can use in deaner and yeah this just shows you uh quite a cool overview of what you're actually getting in Deans um and yeah to have all of these tools in one plugin and you could literally you literally just having this on one node I think is yeah pretty awesome so we've imported our camera settings now we can go to the film and and the hanser has loaded 63 film stocks um which might be a bit overwhelming to begin with but it essentially yeah you can mess around and you know some of these I've never heard of so essentially you can uh see what it will do to the footage and then essentially go and Google that film stock and learn about it and you know its history and all of that on this first clip um I thought it would be quite cool to test out cuz it would seem as if like film would do really well on this um it's quite a brightly lit scene um and I think it would be nice to see the uh film compression on her white outfit um so yeah let's go ahead and have a look on this I think I was messing around with uh the conica impressor uh okay that's Kodak now this kuk impressor 50 gives it a bit of a green tint which is quite cool I'm just going to open up these so that I can actually this pull the tint to a bit more magenta and then I want to just warm it up slightly and then we can go down and get our film print the Kodak 2383 that we all love and that starts to bring in the contrast and you know really gets that like finished image and then from this on the print we can actually you know adjust our exposure um our color density and all of that so now that it's gone a little bit blue I'll want to just pull that a bit warmer again about there I think is cool and then under our film developer tab there's a a slider for color boost which I I really enjoy it's it helps bring back a bit of saturation into the image and I mean essentially to go from a flat log to that in a couple Clicks in my mind is pretty crazy the grain might be a bit a bit much so we just scroll down FM grain and they have 8 mil 16 3565 um the higher the number the finer the grain will be so your 65 M grain will be nice and super fine and then your eight Ms will be the super chunky gritty grain so the 35 is quite a sweet spot 35 250 and then you can just bring it down half you know as you as you see fit to your liking and this is looking pretty cool then they've got um Bloom which just adds a bit of a a pop on the Highlight like as if you were running a diffusion filter um that as well you can you know play with the intensity you don't want to go too strong I mean sometimes you do and then create like that dreamy look so it all depends on you know what what you're going for inhalation to just give a nice this one that's going a bit cuz it's all in the details of the dress but you just get a nice Fringe of the red which is quite cool and here on her shoulders you see it quite I see it's quite a cool characteristic of film but essentially you know that's looking pretty cool I think it can come down a bit on the exposure I think looks pretty cool and then film compression is basically just you know pulling your highlights and helping it uh achieve that more filmic rollof as you can see there in an address it shows it off quite nicely so it just brings it down and just rolls off quite smooth on the r which is quite nice I think something we we uh all try and Achieve is a nice highlight rolloff and theoretically I mean from log to that I mean yeah I'm super stoked with that I think that's pretty cool so yeah essentially if we move on um onto this next clip I want to just copy what I did on that one over I now feel you know that this can come down a bit in exposure and then her skin and then I think it's you know I can just want to adjust this tint a bit to sorry not the uh temp The Tint back down just to bring the um her skin tones back to a sort of you know orangey quite a nice warm look and then I want to bring that actually back onto that one and I think there is a look that I'm super super happy with from log to our deaner grade and uh if we go to the next clip you know it looks really really really good you can see the halation super nicely on the details of this dress let's go to the next clip as well where we get a bit of her face as she comes and Peaks out a bit and that's super soft I really like the color some you know you could maybe if you feel it's a bit harsh bring the color boost just a tad down on her face so that it's not too saturated um but yeah to go from log to aans grade like that in a couple clicks and then you can copy and paste over your your selected clips and then just make you know minor tweaks I think it's it's super super awesome and for the turnaround time that you know some people are after they want to be super fast get the edits out as quick as possible and it just it looks good I think Deans have nailed it I think this is this is definitely a way to go onto this clip this was another favorite of mine from the same shoot we just uh dropped Deans on choose our camera Sony a74 pick our color and I mean kind of off the bat that looks cool but we want to just tweak that a bit more I mean if I just go like randomly through these that was actually one that I was playing with a couple days ago not eastn ilford I mean even black black and white PHS is quite cool uh what happens if we put that on to a 2383 see this is where you know you've got linear that still I mean looks good you can pull that and essentially you know we've got a cool black and white look with a bit of grain you know for a bit of dynamic shots could be quite cool um I mean this is just it's nuts and like this just makes me super stoked on my a74 it just opens so many possibilities F we go like Fuji color bring that down and I mean I would actually want to again um a bit of color boost let me enable that sorry just to you know get some nice colors that were coming through there the skin tones the oranges on the couch um you know and I think I'd want to go for a bit of a finer grain or just minimalize the 35 mil grain just so it's not too heavy and then what's really nice on um a clip like this is if we add the halation you see it there just on the um specular highlights on the earrings it just gives it that slight little pop which is quite cool and I mean and I think this looks flipping amazing yeah moving on to this clip it's awesome uh restored Defender from another client of mine Stone tribe uh based out here in Cape toown they do these amazing builds um so yeah I've just got a Vision 3 250d and a 2383 print on it uh I think what would be cool is definitely halation cuz we've got uh little headlights and and with the sun I think it'll pop super nicely on all these edges uh where is it tan there it is and there immediately you can see on the um little LED headlight bars and all that is that super like nostalgic film Vibe and that's super super cool and again film developer I love this color boost slider to just bring back the pop of color and then I would just slightly warm this and I mean essentially I'm pretty happy with that from log to that I think that's awesome and again super nice with the grain but you could actually drop halation and drop fil grain and you are left with a super clean image from your you know slog 3 log to this super nice contrasty you've got your hints of orange in these flowers and yeah I think it's just great that you can have looks available so quickly using deaner if you don't go for this you know sort of filmic look you can and use the tools like film compression to you know impact those those highlights on a dress just to give us some detail if we look at this clip I've just put de honer on the Node and already you know the image that it's spat out is really cool I mean to go from your log to that you could be done you could be happy with that I mean it looks really good you You' achieved your your film emulation you've got your grain it looks really good but I want to just try a sort of maybe portra kind of look would be cool oh yes this kuk manala I actually found was quite cool with a slight greenish tint again now using the developer to get a bit of contrast and slight bit of color boost and yeah I mean essentially I'm happy with that I don't want to I mean a 2383 gives you a bit of that you know well if I could there just Target the whes a bit warmer exposure up a bit and you know log Dean log Dean you know it looks really good well we could go back to linear and I mean this is quite cool this looks like a you know a printed a printed film photo and I'd be super happy with that I mean it looks awesome another really awesome feature that's uh just recently been added is the over scan tab which is your your actual film gate sprockets um you know all of that cool stuff and it's not a static PNG it actually is animated and moves with your with your footage um and they've got all different types you know you've got your classic 8 16s these are super super cool so now you don't have to go and um search for free pngs and you know here it is Bolton straight in you know and they've got like cool animations on them they look cool I think that was a really cool feature that they've added in the Dehan team was o uh has given us a 10% discount code so if you use foreign Studio to purchase the hanser you'll get 10% off thank you de answer another great thing is another thing that we've actually been using before the um deiny resolve plugin is the plug-in for iOS for the phone for iPhones um it's such a cool way asle on the go when traveling um just to you know soften up your digital cuz I mean your phone as well super sharp Digital Image um you want to just give it a little bit of a softer look uh add a bit of grain you know everyone loves a bit of grain uh halation you know all those cool little tools you have in your hand I think yeah the guys at De Hano have really done a great job with the plug-in it's solid uh I've no yeah no had no issues with it and I definitely will be using it going forward so yeah if you liked any of the looks that we created uh in resolve let us know um tell us what you think about uh deaner if if you using it we'll hopefully see you in the next one and uh yeah don't forget to like And
