[Music] welcome to another episode of chopstick travel I'm Luke and today is day two of our series here in Manila the Philippines so if you didn't check out the last episode hit the link down in the description box we sample some authentic Filipino street foods so we just left the lumpia restaurant and as soon as we walked inside there was a man Hawking something and I didn't know what it was this is called peanut taupe it's almost like a sweet cream form and then with a little hint of sort of like tropical flavor from that coconut it is quite sweet so the Philippines is made up of over 7,000 different islands they're certain to be some really good seafood right we're gonna start our day off in the fish market we're gonna look around see what they have to offer and then bring it to a restaurant and get it cooked up Filipino sauce yes let's go [Music] so we're at key again key helped to say yesterday booty mama pH you can check her out on Instagram and we're at the the fish market right yep gonna pick up some live seafood [Music] funny [Music] first impressions in the market as soon as we walked in and you're just surrounded by all kinds of different seafoods colorful fish colorful lobsters all kinds of friendly vendors this man here was telling us that all these fish are from palawan palawan right I want that doesn't exist that yeah Wow [Music] [Music] so they've got a bucket full of these gooey ducks here look at them they're all squirting like crazy and these are actually like really small ones and nursey want so small before usually they're really really large sort of like a clam but then it sort of hangs it to the side here they're all fresh yeah really fresh everything here is so fresh this market is really cool it's actually quite clean and they have a lot of variety and it looks like the prices are pretty decent so the market definitely isn't very big it's only this one little narrow street but there's a lot of stalls packed in here I think we've decided it on the different seafoods we're going to get so we're gonna walk back to the beginning and then get three different kinds of seafood from three different vendors a Buddha Chris yeah the fountain so we just got our fish here from this guy friendly pretty good price a big 500 I don't know looks like a good fish though I think we're gonna get it cooked two ways all from follow on they really want our business you know we're just kind of like observing yeah so we just bought these little spiral I think they're like sea snails or maybe a type of clam I think they're sea snails we're gonna have to double check everything before we eat it they're tied up in there so I can't pull them out but these are them right here and only 45 so I think it's pretty cute it's definitely starting to get a lot busier in here since we arrived there's a lot more people we're almost done shopping I think we're gonna get one more thing squid I think so but a lot of good-looking seafood here so what are we getting now Sarina so we're getting squid to make Noble yeah yeah so we're just trying to pick out like a medium-sized one right now and yeah we've got a lot of seafood so I don't think too much forgetting for some squid okay Katie got our squid only 80 pesos I think you can see all like the black squid ink actually I think we only got maybe three or four we've already got a lot of seed boots so now what are we going to do we're gonna take it all to the restaurant and get them to cook it up yeah DVDs choosing off the dance I know a good deal yeah seriously so we just trialed a couple different places we were asking around so we could hopefully see them in the kitchen cooking and found a place that let us so we're here I think this place is called Papa dance we're sitting down now all one two three four five of our dishes has arrived so let's introduce everything here would equal is handicapped sitting on and this is a tamarind soup so a little bit sour I'm guessing we got all kinds of different ingredients but the main thing this was made with the fish's head right yeah yeah the fish's head we've got like some turnips water spinach all kinds of goodies back here the filipino classic adobo right CC okay yeah with squid and then just check this out it's so dark from all of that squid ink and super thick looking too I just cook in vinegar cooked in vinegar soy garlic yep back here we've got I haven't checked actually with an English name is for these but there's some sort of like a spiral snail and this one with coconut spicy coconut so you can see all that coconut milk or coconut cream at the bottom again chili and looks like maybe those are beans or here we've got the man this one it just looks so so good this is the chilli garlic crab so two crabs they're all kinds of claws and different pieces going on there and then a super thick creamy looking sauce and guys that smells so so doesn't it and then the last one here is this is the this fish has been deep-fried I think yeah yeah deep fry in sweet and sour sweet and sour sauce and this is the body of our fish so let's start with the sinigang and this is a pretty famous Filipino dish right yeah this is our like a Filipino favorite sour sour soup so I'm just gonna start with the broth oh wow yeah it's good it's really sour yeah that tamarind really cuts through and then there's a little slight flavor of the fish with rice yeah it is very sour a little bit salty yeah next up the adobo gonna get a nice piece of squid here is some of the scraping [Music] don't smile yeah you know friend smile because all that blacks quitting I've never had adobo before yeah does cook really tender the vinegar yeah is it like a kind of acidity but then you can taste that natural squid flavour too and it's also spicy from there green chilli yep wow that's really good it looks like it might be overpowered because of the color of the like a blackness but you really can't taste that squid ink too much okay so we're gonna try the snails necks with coconut chili sauce and key tells me that it's best to suck these guys out of their shell yeah [Music] yeah you could definitely use lots of coconut there I love the coconut it's very creamy and it's a little bit spicy everything's got like that a slight spice to it but not overpowering what do you think good all right next up is the fried fish that lapu-lapu and oh yeah look at all that meat underneath there we get a good piece and this is in this sour sweet and sour sauce it looks like it's going to be crispy but it's not really that crispy it's sort of saturated with the sauce it's a little bit sweet it's really tender really tender yeah it's definitely not spicy you like the other dishes we just tried final dish that we haven't tried yet yes the resistance the crab look at that wow I've got a serious claw going on there and that's going to take some disassembling work so I think I can just pull it right out oh yeah look at that oh man okay [Music] I'm getting it all over my face a little spicy a little spicy a little bit sweet to definitely taste the garlic in there you got to get in and get your D with this so we are getting totally down and dirty with this chilli crab here I mean my hands are just covered in garlic chilli sauce but this is seriously good what do you think your favorite dishes heat my favorite is this crab crab yeah this crab probably my favorite too but a close second would be the what does it cost in a guy that is so good it's just such a strong sourness and a little bit of the spiciness it kind of just like punches you in the back of the throat what's your favorite Sabrina no no these snails are really good they're just covered in this coconut cream and it's delicious never had anything like it before so I think that might be my favorite today yeah really good everything's good yeah everything is good so Sabrina what do you think with our first volcano sea food experience I'm really blown away I'm really surprised this is delicious there's like flavors we've never had before him there's tons of sauce on everything which is different yeah it's awesome he's gonna order another copper riot and awesome thank you bye wow that was really really good I mean there's a ton of restaurants in this damn fast seaside area you can pretty much pick any of them a lot of them are Chinese style and a lot of them are Filipino style of course but pretty much I think they're all going to give you a pretty reasonable price and it's pretty hard to cook fresh seafood poorly unless they overcook it so this place I would recommend I mean they did a fine job it was really good the people that are really friendly so now we're gonna get some durian Mosab ego means it don't like they know you can hear yeah it's ready it's not gonna because the sound is but what's going on with this one why this one blue sounds good yeah so a little bit hollow it's not sticking to the side play the drums they have a ton of durian here I'm not exactly sure what the type of it is but the price is pretty cheap it's only two hundred fifty pesos for a kilo so I think we're gonna get fairly small one cuz we're pretty full after that meal but it smells so good ha ha yeah we got our durian from Davao City which is in the south of the Philippines and they're famous for their dairy and so smells really good looks really good so we're actually directly inside of the fruit market here so we've got our durian from Davao City as I mentioned I would recommend you go for this piece the small pieces tend to be a little bit more sweet so this is the small piece right here I would recommend this what yeah and then give it a big smell first it's actually not too fragrant there's definitely a bit of a durian smell let's try juice mm-hmm you like it I like that oh it's so creamy yeah it's sweet this one's sweep not as much like a fermented flavor oh man check that out that is seriously creamy durian so lots of first for Sabrina tonight and a first for you too yeah that first for Filipino food firstly Darian good right one so that is a really good durian but I think we're all pretty stuffed are we so stuff pretty heavy isn't it we're starting to fall asleep a little bit but they have so many cool fruits here that I think I want to try something else there's something I spotted that I didn't recognize so I'm gonna grab one try to but I thought it's really really sour it's really really sour what is it cotton for it oh I've never heard of that what about these here what are those I think these not saying agree with us so we're gonna get some mangosteen you know it's tradition to eat mango scene after durian really yeah because it's the durian heats you up and then the mangosteen cools you down okay yeah it's good hello sour squeezy juicy so we've got some fresh mango scenes here go perfectly with the durian cools your body down these they look super juicy chef sweet and sour so we've got this year I didn't know it was in Tagalog is called Sinan coelus and then in English is called the Spanish plum so just bite that outside [Music] well that's doozy which is exploded everywhere it's almost like halfway between a plum and a mango good so this is the what do you call it in tagalog senthil and then it's called cotton fruit in english and it supposed to be really sour yeah yeah Wow so we started off with some exotic seafood and now we're having some exotic fruits so just just eat this part right yeah whoa it look at the texture of it it is almost like cotton [Music] it's a two-hour it's sort of sticking to the pit so you need to keep chewing as a flower like floral a little bit sweet sour a little bit tastes like what summer smells like to me it flowers like flowers and fresh-cut grass this is like fresh freshness it's a little citrusy actually yeah that's really interesting cotton fruit let me know down the comment box if you've ever tried this before so our next exotic fruit here they just keep bringing out things because they can tell that we're interested in trying all these crazy different ones and they call this star Apple it almost looks like a like a head of the red cabbage and it feels really soft on the outside almost like a plum [Music] hmm it's not very strong it's a really light flavor like jelly it's like jelly that's almost like jello and it doesn't have much of a flavor almost a little bit of a sweetness so this one is the same thing but just that green color instead of the red that is so creamy Wow it's almost like the same texture as the mangosteen but with sourness it has more texture than the purple mm-hmm Wow I mean it's like gelatin or like fat almost you think of this one it's good yes not too flavorful but it's got a lot of like meat or flesh to it so it's like a heavy fruit yeah what was your favorite one other than durian ki yeah I'd have to agree the mangosteen was really really good wow that was a really cool experience so many tropical fruits that I've never heard of I think you could stay here all day tasting all these crazy different fruits they've got here okay guys that's it for today's episode what an incredible day of eating once again thank you to ki foodie momma pH you can check her out on Instagram and YouTube it'll all be down in the description box and what an
