Fighting Ducks vs Mighty Oregon, 2021 Oregon Football Spring Game Highlights

day in the emerald valley as we get a chance to take our first look at the two-time defending pac-12 champion oregon ducks mario cristobal breaking in a new defensive coordinator and a new quarterback it's pac-12 spring football and it starts now football and the oregon ducks taking the field will have the fighting ducks in the yellow facing off against the defense mighty oregon in the open was very efficient in his two appearances in in the in the championship in the bowl game so i'm interested to see how much he's progressed today henry cattleman with the kick chris hudson will return quickly wrapped up right around the 26 yard line so first and ten for the fighting ducks brown a strike across the middle that is caught by mikhail wright nice little rpo some blockers so those linebackers can flow and make plays because they have a lot of talent at linebacker third and five for the fighting ducks travis die into the game trying to get a push from brown and the rest of the line let's see where they rule him down at and this is going to be awfully close to the first down they do secondary they got it straightened out now they're playing man third and two here's brown pocket collapses able to get it to die die scampers down the sideline die they're going to rule him touchdown fighting ducks so on third and two dye gets loose out of the back field tippy toes the sidelines happens when you have man-to-band coverage you cannot take your eyes off of the man that you're covering the quarterback's not going to look at you and say hey i'm going to throw the ball to you you better hard focus on your coverage and obviously the offense able to go out there convert on third down and move the chains and look very fluid very efficient for their first third down and justin herbert kid was pretty good a couple years ago yeah i would say so jordan no question and he did pretty good last level due to the kova 19 pandemics and no fans allowed and how about this the screen to the big offensive line farm and that is kingsley sama tua seven mighty oregon trying to get a stop for the oregon defense be the first one of this spring game butterfield scampers out of the pocket loads it up top and a touchdown in the back of the end zone there's hudson once again getting open he scrambled a little bit to his right and hudson converted his route for the easy score and it's live looks like this play that we absolutely and that wasn't what you would call your your big time scramble drill but that's the start of a scramble drill the quarterback breaks the pocket morgan has an opponent in the big 10. we'll reveal that here in a moment that is most likely watching this game and trying to get longest third down deficit they faced here in the first quarter two receivers to the right for brown unloads one down the left sideline that's going to sail out of bounds though williams able to make the catch but three quarterbacks battling for that number two position second and seven thompson a dart across the middle and that is caught terence ferguson making the catch in traffic again four-man rush thompson escapes to his right crossed his body catch is made and that's a yard short jordan and in a spring game they just might go for it and i'll bet they do jackson off the edge wow the catch is good first down for brown and company brown fix the handoff here's verdel out on the flat breaks the tackle more than just a game manager they want somebody that can go out there and make plays but you trust with brown and his experience that he can make those right reads and here is dye bouncing it outside a little stutter step as he's finally knocked easy yards up the middle on that play before he bounced it out two carries for 30 yards for die and passes incomplete micah he's a he's a shorter guy he's not like you six five that can see over those guys second and ten and even if it was caught it was going to be fighting dexter offense i think we're going to try to get three guys out to that tight end side up there try to get that back out right away there he goes here's dye out of the back field but passes batted down at the line of scrimmage so mighty organ for the third consecutive drive we're very confident of their chances for another conference title this year coach yeah oregon's got to be one of the favorites coming into the 2021 season i would say in the north you're always looking at oregon and washington and in the south and i know it's early sc wide-eyed and bushy-tailed and sold beyond hopes but well when you have speed and athleticism like you have army one for the fighting ducks ashford the handoff smith another way for another gain of about six another split zone and that's absolutely my favorite offensive formation in the game of football a parrot first and ten for ashford home fakes he's got him unloads one to the sideline and a beautiful catch dante thornton like this first and ten again for ashford dumps it off to webb and at this moment let's welcome in and the challenge that every single one of them had to face last year of just getting through the season and so many of the things that they were accustomed to with student athletes as far as the fans just embraced all the change uh and just adapt with it day-to-day and then when you talk about the fans obviously they can't physically be here today but you get the sense that fans supporting your part in helping everything get back to normal what can you tell us about the vaccination program that you're partaking in yeah well obviously uh all the sports across the spectrum obviously you see what women's basketball has done men's basketball football here but so many of the other sports have maintained their level of success here at oregon despite the challenges of last year yeah thank you so much for joining us i know it's been a very challenging year for you and your team but you guys have done a terrific job of run that one in on the road in columbus you set yourself up very well prior to the start of conference for that college football playoff conversation here is brown quick screen to die he is knocking people with certain you know that guy had an outstanding career young man you know and he was a young player i mean he's going out after three years and and penny sewell uh i i couldn't agree with keepings there's a lot of players there that you could plug and play on all your specialties first and ten so mighty organ getting some more points on the board here's brown flipping it outside johnny and as a whole averaged 2.29 turnovers per game there's a lot of opportunities you're giving the other team as pittman unfortunately his second dropout it's kettleman henry cattleman come on you want your field goal kicker to make these even if you're on defense behind his back the kick is up and it is good so from 52 yards out henry cattleman first of all then you want to say can i buy o-line are they blocking well are we communicating well defensively communication tackling in space making plays downfield like that play just we witnessed right there but you're looking at a lot of things vince but great concentration that was the first flag i believe we've seen this half and so that's another thing you're looking for butterfield can't handle the snap has to keep on us giddy up and take it to the left sideline low and a lot of quarterbacks will tell you they'd rather have that snap a little bit higher than lower butterfield steps up into the pocket and nearly intercepted building i don't even know if you see the same thing too he's found the open man a few times but doesn't necessarily have the zipper the velocity of his ball that we saw the quarterback's guru uh but oh okay they wanted to clock it uh you know butterfield relatively even with all their snaps this spring butterfield dancing around the pocket a little too tall as to implement everything you want to in that new offense when you don't have a full year of practice butterfield getting some time dumps it off to smith who was quickly brought down on the outside and that play was covered good players for him and so guys like apple had to step up and jerome mckinley who i think is one of the leaders played very well for the ducks also final play of the half butterfield tries to thread the needle incomplete on fourth and seventh so another stop snap is good and three more points for the fighting ducks so i think we're three for three kicking the ball kickers are doing 2005 to have four defensive backs selected in the draft as we see a beautiful completion to pittman who gets his first reception production so after a brief halftime of about five minutes it will be a running clock here in the second half and another connection from brown this time it's johnny johnson the third and they're gonna let him keep running us johnson runs it all the way into the end zone but let's see if they're gonna rule him down there's a little bit of contact and obviously you're not trying to take the head off your own teammate during the spring game but what do you see here coach that play to me was interesting i don't know they're going to roll them down they're going to roll down they realize that could have been it give brown some options here at seven here's brown dropping back trying to go over the top and another catch is made for the touchdown this time troy franklin they're gonna rule him out actually at the three-yard line and that young receiver true freshman has two catches for about close to 80 yards i would think seeing guys now we got a lot of young guys and we really got to jail together as a team now kayvon i remember we sat down before your freshman year you said you never squatted before you came to school here at oregon physically where are you at now because it seems like you've filled out even more since that first year seven every time they score does the defense get enough help with the way that the scoring is i mean being a defender i've never really cared about points just honestly about the work that we put in so i have oh it was a take away uh-oh exactly that's that's why we never speak too soon they go to points but um yeah we never really focus on it we just out here trying to get better well kayvon keep up the great one so pittman throwing the pick that'll lead to a possession change we'll step aside here at the oregon spring game thompson dumps it off right across the middle that is terence ferguson with the catch and already with thompson football action that thing's unbelievable look at that size of it here's the carry for smith and you can just watch that screen if you need to he needs the monitor at this point battle for that number two quarterback position all these quarterbacks coming in today playing well thompson finds crocker a great read by thompson to drop that in there on the sideline you figure most likely would be the starter and will get a chance to start for three years potentially after brown yeah absolutely him and butterfield or in my opinion are battling for their second position and they've been thin at running back this spring jordan i i think that's you know they're probably trying to not give c.j virdell that many carries and travis die and nine ball on the nine mighty organ in the green what has turned into a very competitive spring game good jump on the outside thompson holds on to the rock scoots to his left recalibrates fires it in broken up and going to your left and trying to throw back across your body nine and this is a tough area to convert from everything happens faster here just nine yards to work with then looks like we have a botched snap potentially see what happened here just a cluster of players and this might be a takeaway for the oregon defense which would give them three points let's see what happens here and it is the left hand of number 61 logan silgapaloo that hits the snap as he's trying to give him an easy read been their go-to play third and three it's jumped in just a step too late micah pittman getting the catch but jordan happel what can you say about your other linebackers many people circle your unit as the strength of the defense okay yeah what else can you shorten our turnovers this year we've talked about the step back that oregon took when it came to the turnover margin in 2020. what are you guys doing to focus on trying to take away the ball more next season and practices uh me and isaac just we really try to focus on taking taking away the ball like punching and stripping it or even fix all right no i think the opportunity to share this field with your brothers um a lot of different things went into it i definitely wanted to end in a bang though i definitely wanted to come back and win big time robbie ashford back in at quarterback takes the snap steps up in the pocket delivers a strike another nice catch on the outside isaiah crocker go for a two-point conversion here is ashford again up top connects with a man and that is dante thornton getting behind the defense and now the fighting ducks a chance to tie up this spring game with a minute 43 left well it's obviously a busted coverage that that's uh again i keep going back this another teachable moment i mean you know they need a touchdown 143 or a little bit more than that before that play keep it in front of you i guarantee you somebody's going into the flat ashford back to pass has a man in the middle escapes to the right ashford they can't use his legs diving for the pylon so what do they call there it is ruled a two-point conversion is good and robbie ashford the baseball player rounds the bases and brings it home for the two-point conversion they're going to rule that the final play of the spring game so the fighting ducks in yellow get the win 35-34 over mighty oregon one more looking this just turns into a foot race ashford but you figure in the second half where the coaches were trying to limit the tackling might have seen a little bit more aggression here on the edge as brian addison could have taken one decent look at ashford but you love the hustle and really i think the takeaway from this game is that we saw some impressive plays from all three potential second string quarterbacks butterfield ashford ty thompson all in their own right looking very impressive and
