[Music] new cars [Music] classic cars crashed cars supercars it's time for an all gear [Music] chops away [Music] hello and welcome to fifth gear behind me are two grand tourers like no other together they cost over four hundred thousand pounds and produce over one thousand three hundred horsepower but which is best well together with carrying chandok we're going to spend the day finding out it's a tough job but someone's got to do it [Applause] also on the show johnny tries out the ultimate getaway car of the 1960s the mark ii jag the team test renault's new city car the twingo how about donuts i look at some bargain 4x4s and vicky drives alpha's lightweight sports car the 4c oh the turbo kicks you in the back and says hello i'm here right then down to business these two gts have been designed to get across continents at warp speed so we're going to assess them both on a trip down to monte carlo the sort of posh destination these cars were built for but we have heard the weather's a bit iffy down there so instead we're going to create our own monte carlo trip right here at rockingham speedway by definition cars like the f-12 and vanquish must be ballistically fast but when one costs 239 000 pounds and the other 193 000 you'd expect more for your money than pure speed test one will discover if they're exciting to listen to and are agile around some beds yes we're heading into the mountains on route to our monte carlo vacation first up comes an alpine tunnel the perfect place to test which car makes the most noise let's face it with cars like these you want to be noticed we'll both head through the tunnel with our cars wound up to 6 000 revs i'll be driving the aston karoon the ferrari and an app on a phone will record the decibel level coming from our mighty pipes this might have the best of british engineering but let's be honest you're not going to beat an italian car for sound especially a v12 ferrari have actually fitted special sound pipes from the inlet to the front of the bulkhead so we could really appreciate it right first gear away we go 6 000 rpm let's listen to that oh yeah that's just beautiful music sounds impressive but i've got a v12 as well i've also got some little vowels that open in my exhaust system to make it sound a little bit better come on britain [Applause] [Music] that should sort of italian stallion out it did because while the f12 recorded a shrill 77.6 decibels the vanquish outshouted it with 78.6 so in the first of our two mini tests the aston is one up next we'll hit some monte carlo style mounted bends to determine agility the ferrari is 70 kilograms lighter than the 599 it's replaced it also has a lower center of gravity it's shorter lower and narrower as well so ferrari have made every effort to make this big gt nimble [Music] but aston haven't been idle either this vanquish is 60 kilograms lighter than its predecessor so we're here at tiff's alpine course that he's designed at rocky rim um the rules are we have to have all the toys on so the ferrari we've got a wet setting which is quite appropriate for today in which we've got stability and traction control on a maximum setting so let's see how we get on have you got your launch control engaged yep launch control engaged i'm i'm ready to go three two one go under the car starts to slide all the toys kicking in it's just maximum attack in terms of the electronics just working overtime to keep the car stable come on come on come on go go go i'm in control lots of revs even though it's got its traction on flat on the power and it's not going anywhere oh holding me back come on i know i've got grip go let me go come on go on i'm still straight line into the final chicane now coming towards his flying finish oh understeer 50.69 seconds you do feel in control i have to say like if i was attacking on an alpine road if you were a rookie driver you'd feel pretty safe i'm not sure if you turned it all off what it'd be like my turn all the electronics on and 50.69 seconds to beat three two one go [Music] [Music] nearly stopped go no go all breaks lots of abs ticking go oh that looks quite quick through that right hand he's actually accelerating a bit more than mine was the more it kills you his car has a bit more faith than him than mine had in mind these cars are getting very clever these days it's amazing how good these traction systems are though you know he's coming up the last couple of corners now i can see him cover that little final right loop it's realizing he wanted to correct the slime player thruster finish line you did a 50.1 it's close you were slower 50.6 dollars wasn't it wow well there you go electronics for the british wins over the entire too complicated that's your travel crew and it's too complicated so as the aston was noisier through the tunnel and quicker around the hairpin bends it wins part one of our monte carlo challenge join us later in the show for the resumption of our monster gt battle no no no we spun it still to come careful the team test renault's little twingo and johnny pulls off a bank job oh hold up what's the score with this it's the same color [Music] welcome back next we're off to our high tech track at rockingham for a fifth gear team test today the team tested the new renault twingo renault claim their new city car is fun to drive and easy to live with just two engine sizes are available there's a 999 cc petrol or a higher powered 898 cc turbo petrol as fitted to our test car crucially this is the new rear wheel drive rear engine tweak rear-wheel drive yeah honestly it's a minor revolution this thing hurrah for being different i think it's so cute it's a bit like a fiat 500 but it's a little bit fresher i think it's got sweet proportions and it almost makes you want to run up and hug it so the boot is in the front well unfortunately it's not quite like a 911. there's no boot in there no there's no storage that's where you store anything there's the engines in the back in the back well there's no room the engines in the back well the boot is in the back it's a radical platform that should be uh applauded i could open it or i could watch you try and find the button to open it was it hard to wear we just open it you just know what's going on with boots now okay i love that little leg swing it's under under there and then the glass bit comes up can we see the engine let's have a look just gonna get this little carpet out hello there's a picture of it brilliant it's cute looking all the twingos till now have been three-door come let's go in i'm using the rear doors they're climbing inside it was a bit weird it's got a very high floor in fact it's quite a high car when you look at it compared to others this seat dominates my view it abso it's almost like you are in a different car it's lovely in the front there vic you can't see it's lovely anodized looking yeah yeah it does feel really airy a lot or i feel a bit land of the giants like i'm so much bigger than the rest of the car which i'm sure i'm not i really like this two-tone yeah i will say leather but i'm sure it's not how about steam with adjustment can i get it one inch that's better it's taking off my knees yeah that's a good driving position hey look at this the car don't start pulling it apart oh johnny don't break things it comes with tupperware is it a french lunchbox i don't really know what it is so what we needed to do was to compare the twingo with a current favorite and luckily we had a volkswagen up here so johnny remind us what was the twingo's basic boot let's open the glass tailgate and voila 188 litres of boot space beautiful i have got 251 with a little panel that goes to the floor okay so that's basic boot now what about if you fold the seats down they both obviously go what capacities we got there the twin goes capacity is now 980 liters where is this 959. well the twingo has one more trick johnny had a little master plan up his sleeve because the twingo you can put that front passenger seat flat and then lie for the whole length of the car watch look i could go camping and sleep on my own and it's really comfortable so we'll call that one all for load space oh hello johnny just hold on tight would you just go for the ram okay what about maneuverability oh dear vic you've been stuck you see engine in the back better turning circle at the front vicky proved that the ups turning circle is not as good as the twin goes bye we also wanted to know how did it handle is this rear wheel drive thrills was gonna be power oversteer we needed to know so we decided to do uh like a little tiff esque auto test yeah [Music] oh my oh oh i don't think johnny enjoyed that so the twingo turns onto sixpence and can carry tall people lying down but is disappointing dynamically what will it score the new renault twingo promised to be very different but in the end it wasn't really so it gets a rather sad six i like the twingo inside and out and i'm going to give it a very respectable 7 out of 10. the twingo is not only a very well executed car but it's different and it's fun and it's attractive and i think all of that should be well applauded i think it's a car that's fit for purpose and that's why i'm going to give it an 8. and that gives the twingo a team test total of 21 out of 30. this is the mark ii jaguar a true blue british motoring icon do i like it because it marries luxury agility and devastating performance in a four-door shell or do i love it because it was the first saloon to have a disc break in every corner not really i love this jag for the blag and the swag because the mark ii was the getaway car of the era [Music] this is jolly or johnny quick fingers as he's known for his mates he likes to keep his money in a bank but doesn't like waiting to make a withdrawal this is johnny's wheel man ian they call him growler he also likes mark twos he says they help him pay the bills but johnny rexella drives them because they're classy motors that pack a big engine under the snow [Music] the jag might be the best car to cover miles quickly but quick fingers and growling over to outwit the rozzers eventually you've got to switch to something different right let's change motors quick and quick oh hold up what's the score with this it's the same mark ii in the same color don't worry not quite what it seems they'll never catch us on this it's a beautiful mark two it's mine he's not lying neither in fact when it comes to jacks this fella's got form [Music] growler aka ian callum is the design director at jaguar and the brains behind some of the world's coolest cars including the jaguar f-type and aston martin db7 sometimes though he likes to create cars just for himself he revealed more under interrogation so how long has this been in the making how long have you had this in your notebook well this has been my notebook since i was probably about 15 years old that's amazing yeah this was really very indulgent in my part i designed this and created it with cmc to just create the car that i wanted this has taken 18 months to do has it really i loved mark twos while i was growing up but i always felt just a little bit too much chrome in them so the first thing you notice about it the bumpers have gone yeah much more aerodynamic the chrome is off the sides of the car yeah the side strips have gone and the chrome's off the middle of the bonnet as well so it's just pare it down and simplify it and that's really what the exterior is all about and uh 17-inch wheels slightly bigger tires the front wheel arch comes out almost an inch 25 millimeters in width to accommodate the wider wheels so you've fled the art so these these fronts this front wing is completely handmade to fit this car yeah so it's uh quite a bespoke car really so his thing we clearly haven't done a 60s bank robbery because we're not crims but i do want to commit some daylight robbery right now you do i really want to drive your car i mean there you go all right you be careful just hang around here it's really nice it's lovely bye see ya look after it when the mark ii jag came out in 59 it invented the genre of sports saloon before then he didn't have a saloon car with true sports car pedigree now fast forward half a century as soon as you get in the caller mark ii feels light years away from its old brother for a start this five-speed gearbox has much closer ratios much more forgiving much quicker to shift the brakes are even better than the original the steering's now power assisted rack and pinion it's got some mod cons but ian's decided to not go for a modern engine this is still a straight six a classic double overhead cam straight six in the front but it's not a 3.8 like the original mark twos came in they've used a slightly later 4.2 and boarded up to 4.3 the result 260 horsepower 280 pounds feet that's normally aspirated still running on twin su carbs which sound like this you get that proper straight six bellow [Music] it really feels tailored altered but done so sympathetically throughout for example the dash it's still the same architecture as the original mark ii but it's now crafted out of such lovely thick modern wood the dials are all in the same positions but they're more modern so with the toggle switches this beautiful motorlita steering wheel that's got an ever slightly padded rim it just feels even more of a driver's car while ian's jag is a one-off at the moment there are plans to produce 12 of them to special order the price while more than most banks keep in their vaults you're going to need the best part of 300 grand if you want a callum mark ii this car does not come cheap but this car is not a normal mark two at this point i should really be uh going back to picking up but you know what i think i might just let the cops pick him up instead next up some second-hand heroes interesting buys for people on a budget this time we've scoured the classifieds for posh and lofty four by fours these are the cars for when size matters large engines a huge on-road presence and the ability to go pretty much anywhere the only thing not big here are the prices because you can pick up one of our ultimate off-roaders for just 1 000 pounds my entry-level choice is the car that coined the term chelsea tractor and brought four by fours from the country into the city the 1994 second generation range rover range rover with its beefy squared off styling and its leather clad interior it transformed the image of the off-road driver not of course that many range rovers actually went off-road but just the knowing that it could made it such a wonderful car to be in so what does it drive like well air suspension with a couple of weaves it reminds you how much they rolled in the old days which was a bit disconcerting when going into a cord and now you've got two tons underneath you but that's what they all did that's what you have to live with unfortunately these old range rovers didn't have the best of reputations for reliability which means it's even more important you spend a little bit of extra time taking a closer look before you buy check that there isn't any dampness in the driver's foot well this could indicate a leaking heater matrix behind the dashboard and water can then seep into the car's main computer which will cost 500 pounds to fix ask if the car has had a modern central locking unit fitted because this car was designed before the days of wi-fi and the remote can be triggered by all the modern day signals bouncing around apart from unlocking the car unexpectedly this will eventually drain the main battery and a new unit costs 180 pounds the range rover offers incredible presence at a bargain price but up the budget and you could own a bmw x5 now available from just 3 000 pounds the x5 came at a time when bmw owned rover by so doing they acquired some of the off-road technology from the range rover but in many ways whilst this x5 was very capable off-road it was this on-road performance that put it apart from the range rover now there was an off-roader that felt like a sports car on-road it was the handling that really marked this out the world of four by fours had suddenly moved up a gear it's one of the sharpest looking suvs money can buy but make sure you carry out some vital checks when out on a test drive make sure the gearbox is changing gear smoothly and not holding gears for too high in the rev range it's common for the auto box to fail at around 120 000 miles and a replacement will set you back three grand on a diesel model like this one look out for excessive smoke or a whining sound this can mean the turbo is on the way out and you'll have to budget 1500 pounds to fix finally on acceleration listen out for any knocking from the rear this could indicate a problem with the rear subframe bushes and a 500 pound problem with your bank balance my next choice has a porsche badge and unbelievably can be yours for just six 000 pounds the kn [Music] the km was a controversial car when it was launched i mean the idea of a porsche suv seemed outrageous and then there it's questionable looks but luckily for us porsche concentrated from what they really wanted to do was to create the most sporty suv on the market [Music] the whole range of engines were offered during the production of this model towards the end of the run there was even a turbo diesel but you don't really want that you don't really want the v6 petrol either so what you really want is one of their v8s this car's got the entry-level 4.5 liter normally aspirated that produces 340 horsepower but towards the end of the run you could have had a 4.8 liter turbo s with 542 horsepower now that's more like it owning a porsche will never be cheap so it's crucial to ensure you don't start off with a poorly poor car [Music] when accelerating hard listen for any thumping under the center of the car this could be a sign the prop shaft is on its way out and replacing that will cost you 900 quid also check if the car has upgraded aluminium coolant pipes because the kn originally came with plastic ones which have been known to crack coolant loss could result in catastrophic engine damage and the aluminium upgrade costs one and a half grand finally thanks to a combination of weight and performance the kn can eat tyres in under 9000 miles new rubber will cost 200 pounds per corner so make sure there's decent tread on those rims so if you're looking for a super off-road machine on a budget then look no further than our selection of second-hand heroes join us after the break for the resumption of our gt supercar test i'll give you seven seven and vicky's in wales trying out a fast alpha welcome back to our battle of the continental barnstormers so far the vanquish is one up on the f12 as we replicate a gt trip to monte carlo as the aston made a bigger noise in our alpine tunnel and proved a touch more nimble through some mountain bends for our next test we'll be examining how entertaining these cars are to drive because if you get to park with around 200 000 pounds to buy one of these machines you expect to have some fun time to switch off that traction control get the tails out and have a drifting competition we'll each get three attempts and to score well the cars must be as sideways as possible through the whole course and maintain a decent speed karim will go first and with a tarmac melting 740 hp at his disposal he won't be short of power okay let's see what you can do with the ferrari it's time to go unusually for a front engine car 54 to the f12's weight is at the back thanks to moving heavy bits of equipment like the gearbox to the rear not what you want when trying to deliberately break traction good well now he's straightened it out oh nice ending nice ending karen all right that was my first attempt let's see the score let's see the score let's see the score seventy seven seven you straightened up too much coming up the hill tried to knock your points all right croon your second attempt remember one more sideways up that hill from the left-hander before you flick it right let's see it over there it's a spin oh that didn't go well not only does the f12 have massive power but massive torque as well and with no traction control to calm things down it was clearly proving a handful uh too much power too soon it's no no just go back to base now i'm not even going to score you on that effort the pressure's on now current pressure's on so third and final attempt [Music] good good good good good [Music] it was better it was better you just didn't quite get that flick early just understand right where you are now didn't it so an age for that one yeah unfortunately my hand flicked the paddles it went to first gear and went into an understeer driver's excuses excuses oh your turn your turn i'm gonna back it up and give you a shot let me show you carrow how it's done so a score of eight to beat now although that ferrari on paper is so much quicker more torque more power when it comes to a slippery surface too much torque it can be embarrassing but it gets the slide going too snappily so i'm hoping this aston's in for another win here we go wish me luck this car's suspension is 15 stiffer at the front and 35 percent stiffer at the rear compared to the old vanquish which should improve stability in the bends like the best start snapping oh [Music] well i don't know what to say tiff i mean i could give you a three because you got three quarters of the way around a three i did three quarters of the course perfectly and it gives me a three i don't over compensate not as aggressive off the line punch straddle catch slide oh bit slow he's quite slow in our first car it wasn't very convincing keep the power in lots of stuff flick it catch it into turn one this is a safe one oh he's looking that's good got it god's it got it nailed it nailed it nailed it did look good oh if he marks me down now i'm gonna punch him in the face i'm gonna knock some points off because the first one you were really you're crawling into the first left-hander but the right was really good seven i'll give you seven because the right was really good but the first one was a bit weak weak weak i had one last chance to prove the aston could outdo the ferrari [Music] oh he's going for it now that's much better oh he's across the glass that was good that was good i bet he'll mark me down for cutting the grass next i'll have to take away a little bit for his grass cuttings i'm gonna i'll give you an eight for that one there was grass cutting you modern formula one drivers you're never on the track well at least we're gonna be equal now we can't let it draw eight all you know draw i hate draws [Music] okay maybe it was a fair result although the ferrari has power and abundance sometimes you can have too much of a good thing allowing the more modest aston to match it in this test and that means the vanquish is still ahead overall join us later in the show to find out whether the mighty f-12 catches up or suffers a humiliating defeat a race around the rockingham track will decide all right here we go sunshine it comes to building fast sports cars there are generally two schools of thought there's the pamper route where you sacrifice a few cattle for the most luxurious of interiors install a cinema spec surround sound system and every gadget and driver aid known to man basically you create an executive jet for the road the only trouble is you end up with a car that weighs just as much the mercedes sl 63 amg it oozes luxury but is only a driver and some luggage short of two tons so to give it the performance it deserves merck installed a thumping 5.5 liter v8 but there is another way to go fast the pawpa root this is the alfa romeo 4c it costs 45 000 pounds it's beautiful and it's quick nauta 62 comes up in 4.5 seconds and left alone it'll reach 160. and yet the motor that powers it is a modest four-cylinder turbo providing an equally modest 240 horsepower the alpha secret weight or rather lack of it because every effort has been made to make the car as light as possible the central carbon fiber tub weighs just 65 kilograms then there are the body panels which are made of a composite material that's 20 percent lighter than steel lighter in fact than aluminium and the engine's been on a diet too it is 22 kilograms lighter than the donor motor that's the equivalent weight of a child the glass is 15 thinner as well the result is a car that weighs just 925 kilograms and lightness means less inertia so this car should go around ben's well i like going around burns well let's see how we get on i'm staggered at how much grip this car has got particularly on a wet and very winding and slippery world road that's partly because the car is so ridiculous it just sort of plants itself down on the ground the alpha delivers its biggest punch when it comes to power to weight with an awe-inspiring 256 great horsepower per ton that is mightily impressive oh the turbo definitely kicks you in the back and says hello i'm here make no mistake the 4c demands your constant and undivided attention there's no power steering and it is so in tune with what's going on on the tarmac that you can tell what sex of roadkill you've just run over i am having a mental workout all my senses in my head are just alive and jumping and if my eyes weren't on stalks before they most certainly are now you cannot take your eyes off the road for one second it's just as well there's not a manual gearbox because i haven't got the time to take my left hand off the wheel there is no point even turning the stereo on because the engine bombards your ears it's either whistling or sucking or doing something there is a racing pack that you can buy for this car which costs about three and a half thousand pounds don't bother save your money for some ear defenders and a chiropractor and just in case you're some kind of masochist the 4c comes with a more extreme driver setting hold this button down for eight full seconds and race mode pops up which turns off the electronic driving aids that have been helping to keep me on the road shall we give it a go yep there goes the rear this is not a car that you are going to pop to the shops in this car will drag you down to your nearest fastest road and demand a good thrashing i feel i've been on like a manic cycle in a tumble dryer i've only been in the car 20 minutes and that perhaps is the alpha's biggest problem it wears you out like a hyperactive child it's noisy constantly demanding and it won't let you relax for a millisecond so for most people their preferred choice will be rivals like the porsche cayman it's more refined and cheaper but for a few the 4c will be the most perfect toy they have ever dreamed of join us after the break for the climax of our monte carlo gt challenge fighting for group fighting for grim i can hear how much power it's gone welcome back it's time for the grand finale of our money no object grand tourer trip to monte carlo okay we're at rockingham speedway in corby not the cote d'azur but we've done our best to replicate a millionaire's drive to the south of france and so far the aston has its nose in front having won the first round and drawn with the ferrari in round two now it's race time because let's face it you can't visit monaco without going head-to-head around its famous grand prix now i've got launch control and i can get to 62 in just 3.8 seconds he's got launch control as well he can get to 62 and 3.1 if i can hold him out just enough the first corner i might have a chance two laps of the track will decide which is the faster car we've had our playground games now it's the real thing if the f12 wins it will salvage a draw overall but can the less powerful aston humiliate the mighty ferrari and cause a bit of an upset he's going to go the outside though he can't go around that outside it's slippery is green with a top speed of 201 miles an hour this is the fastest mass-produced aston ever i'm gonna squeeze you out previous fast models have often been let down by slow gearboxes but this vanquish has the all-new 8-speed zf system more gears and quicker changes mean you can get the most from that glorious v12 oh into the first airplane cliff's got the inside line there's so much power we got the lead the all-important lead it's such a struggle to put all downs the performance stats for the f-12 are simply mind-blowing the engine red lines are 8 700 revs not 224 comes up in just 8.5 seconds and there's a top speed of 211 miles an hour fighting for group fighting heading towards the chicago he's still got the inside line i love the feel of this car i don't care it has got as much power i love this car all right here we go sunshine no no you're not coming through there son oh oh oh oh he's alongside bye bye nidal but i've got the inside for the next he's still going to get by oh not quite not quite enough and onto the straight now the straight's so wide i don't know how i'm gonna block him oh this thing has just so much grant it's unbelievable yes into the lead oh no i can hear how much power it's got oh don't bite me please don't bite me please don't bite me [Music] the more impatient i get the more i spit wheels and lose ground he's trying to come back i mean [Music] all right find a couple of corners into the last you came no he's so fast that little squirt of power on the straights i can't get close enough when it really matters i'll tell you what this athlete's got so much closer to that ferrari i believe [Music] i don't know what this is thrilling terrifying exciting oh let's just say this guy oh stop hit the wall don't put the wall it's like a drunk i do feel like one of those texans wild cowboy [Music] the ferrari's gonna win but the aston gave it a really good run for its money [Music] [Applause] did you have a moment or two karen that's the most exhausting two laps of my life but uh yep power wins [Music] however when you take the other rounds of our monte carlo challenge into account the result is a draw so after a day with these cars which one would we ultimately choose well i can assure you that if the conditions were the same and i had the choice of the keys i would drive home in the aston martin you i have to say it's the first time i've had to stay so wide awake in a straight line because it was just all over the place you know i could wheel spin even in fourth gear yeah i think i'd feel safer driving home the aston i think i'd be pretty brave to drive home in the ferrari but um i think it'd be safe when yesterday well anyway thank you for your time here thank you are we going to monaco next time of course it was just all the tunnel the ferries were all fully booked next time [Music] foreign you
