hi everyone here is my latest project let me let me tell you a little something about this about a week ago I was online I have no idea what I was doing when I when I saw this furniture it must have been an ad or something I saw a three drawer turquoise chest and looked at it and saw it was made by Hooker Furniture hooker is one of the higher-end manufacturers and so the price tag on this thing was like $900 I was like holy smokes I could do something like that maybe no maybe not exact but something similar I even I even told my wife and you know keep an eye out for something this size it was like 32 inches wide 18 inches deep in 32 inches tall so this past Sunday about five days later I woke up and looked at Facebook marketplace and this was available for $10 and I didn't realize it was as big as it is until until I got to it to top it all off the hooker dresser is you know $900 turns out this dresser is made by American drew the Bob Mackie home was a collection I looked this piece up online and it's out of production now but whenever it was in production it was $900 also so I think everything just kind of fell into my lap and so I'm ready to get started on this and see I'm not gonna make it exactly like it first of all this the hooker one says it has gold leaf I'm not gonna mess with gold leaf right now I can use gold wax and we'll just see how that turns out and I'll try my best to make it look like a $900 piece of furniture just like the hooker nightstand that I saw I can't say that a say that in a hooker hooker furniture hooker hooker hooker so I'm ready to get started obviously this thing is in bad condition it's got tons of damage on the top there's a lot of scratches in the wood and right here the veneers peel it up so I'm gonna take I think what I want to do with mine is I kind of want to stay in the top I kind of just want to have a stained top and I don't know that I want to have a turquoise top even even if I don't like it I could paint over it the drawers obviously they're missing two handles there's no way I'm gonna be able to find those exact handles but I have some handles laying around and I'll find out a solution normally I'd start off with the with the prep work get it cleaned in clean and saying since I'm planning on stripping the top I'm gonna do that first just in case anything gets down on the body and I can just clean it up along with the prep process later for the top I'm just gonna go ahead and strip it off pair the stripper I'm using clean strips quick strip I've been using this stripper for quite a while now you always want to get the one that says 15 minutes not the 30 minute one this works a lot faster then then I'll be applying it with this chip brush here whenever I'm stripping always like to put I guess you would call it a liberal amount on there so that it doesn't dry it out it's already starting to bubble up just after about 30 seconds so this will take about five or ten minutes and then I'll be able to strip it off so you can see the texture it's all bubbled up from the stripper you can see some of the spots where it might not come off as well places places like this I usually have to do like two applications a stripper show that's that's pretty normal you now that's it for the for the strip come back with mineral spirits and steel wool that'll get all the rest of this stuff off here all right I got some mineral spirits this is this is like the odorless kind it's like white you can use either kind of one I don't know why they call it odorless it has plenty of motor that's probably too much and then I've just got some coarse steel wool I'm not going to scrub real hard just clean it off with some rags so I've just got to let this dry for a little bit don't want to sand whenever it's wet if you were to sand it right now just kind of like shred up the wood while I'm waiting on the top to dry I'm going to look in here here I know I have some hardware like this I think look good put these on there oh there we go three these came off of a 1960s Bassett Provincial dresser these will work well but the problem is is the handles before we're drop handles so they hung down about right here so the holes are higher so if I was to put this on right here it would it would be kind of high if I want to put it where I want it then then the holes show or at least at least one hole shows so I'm going to do some measuring and probably drill some new holes probably about like right here you use some wood filler here the top on the dresser is dry now I'm going to do my wood filler over here on this little chipped area one of the most important parts of prep is cleaning you want to get all of the dirt and grime off you can see all the stuff that's on the bottom we're gonna use some trisodium phosphate TSP just comes in a powdered form I have some dixiebell white lightening cleaner but this is the same as as tsp comes in a powder form you just put a couple tablespoons per gallon I use warm water I got about gallon of water in there it's like two tablespoons about paint stir action you you did this ender this time because it doesn't make scratches as easy as the other one does this is 120 and then I'm going to come back with 220 [Music] you that's that sanding on the whole body is done all I have left to do is sand the drawers now I'm still waiting for the wood filler to dry on the drawers but this is done you again for the stain I'm using Minwax dark walnut' you can see the color there this is one of the main colors that I use for staining and glazing you so it's been about ten minutes and everything is kind of starting to dry up a little bit so I'm gonna take it off right now now that I've got the stain on and dry I'm gonna spray some water based polyurethane with this Wagner this is the Wagner flexi oh sprayer and I've been kind of learning it lately so I'm gonna spray about three or four coats of polyurethane on the top of this dresser right I've got three coats down and I'm about to spray my final coat of polyurethane on the top all right now the poly is dried looks really sick looks kind of good I don't know I don't know if I want to paint over it I think what I'm gonna do is just tape tape over the whole top and do the bottom the tape I'm using is scotch blue you next thing I'm going to do is spray primary so that all of this wood here that's exposed doesn't cause bleeds in the paint and what that is the oils in the woods will come up through the water-based paint so one way to stop that is to use spray paint and I tend to use what whatever spray paint doesn't matter right now I'm using rust-oleum cheap at Walmart works really good so I'll use two coats of this I'll let it dry 15 minutes in between each Kota at whatever ninety hundred degrees whatever the hell it is in here right now I tend to do this on everything just to make sure I don't have to go back and worry about anything later [Music] all right everything is dry and ready for paint now for the paint I've got Val sparse exotic see now I got it all loaded up in my Wagner flex EU 5000 that's a sprayer I'm using on this one today [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] look at that God is really freaking blue yeah I think it's still gonna look cool I actually probably put it on a little thick but it's it's not dripping at anything it's too hot in here looks pretty good but yes something was on the other side of that that wrapping paper and came off his little looks what looks like it's point so I'm gonna use some mineral spirits and a clean rag see if I can't get it off you got messed up with some paint spirits rubbed it with elbow grease and it still came off got the drawers out of the way so I can start glazing I'm gonna be using the same wood stain that I used in the top Minwax dark walnut same brush you all right I've got the glazing done and I'm going to add a few coats of polyurethane to finish it off and then I'll start adding some gold to the details there I'm going to be using the parks pro semi gloss polyurethane but this is the one I've been using on the past few projects I've got about like a third of a gallon in there still $40 and I've done three or four projects with it I'm gonna put it doesn't really matter it's gonna put I put 20 because I don't want it to I don't want to run out and they try to spit just screw it onto my gun here then it's got this this hose here the gun attaches just like that [Music] [Applause] almost didn't do it this video I happened to miss myself recording the the last coat here and you can see see that texture see how it is a lot of people get worried when they see that you just need to leave it alone don't turn a fan on it or anything what'll happen is it'll flatten out some good good paint and good poly urethanes will flatten out this is one of the reasons why they say not to use it above a certain temperature because it'll dry too fast so even though it's though 97 degrees in here I I keep my fans off that way I know that it's not going to do that now that everything's dried I'm ready to put some gold wax on the edges I'm gonna be using Dixie Bills warm gold gilding wax this is this is just a metallic wax and I usually just rub my finger on it and put it right on the piece but what you do is you can just rub your finger in it some could have good amount on your finger like that you here it is 99.9% complete all I have now to do is paint the hardware all right so I must I must have redone these handles about 10 times trying out different colors and combinations and I think I think I like this kind of goes with the top kind of goes with the gold good contrast for the turquoise this is what they look like up close I've got that same gold wax on him so what I did is after I cleaned the Hardware off I painted it with some oil rubbed bronze resto Liam came out looking like this this color just really didn't go with the dresser so I added some of the dixiebell warm gold gilding wax you I had everyone here it is finally completed I hope y'all liked this video you know I tried to take something and draw some inspiration from it and while mines not exactly like the hookers dresser I'm really happy with how it turned out I got to do a bunch of stuff that I don't do very often with the gold and turquoise haven't done turquoise and quite a quite a long time I hope you all like this video comment down below let me know what you think about this piece what should I have done different y'all love telling me that also subscribe I appreciate everyone that comments on my videos I tried to reply to all of them it might take me a day or so to get around to it but I usually reply to all of them even if you mean to me so thanks again for watching hopefully I can get another video out by next week and I'll see you all again soon
