[Music] church this is what we have come to do this morning this is our instruction from god's word and so we take it seriously out of psalm 66 but we take it joyfully as well i know that we all kind of come through the week and this is such a high point for me personally because we gotta open our mouths and join in the proclamation of god's glory with the rest of creation so listen to this from psalm chapter 66 it says it says shout for joy to god all the earth sing the glory of his name give to him glorious praise say to god how awesome are your deeds so great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you all the earth worships you and sings praises to you they sing praises to your name and i love this fifth verse come and see come and see what god has done he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man certainly this morning god has been awesome in his ways towards us right and we know that from what we know that from the change of heart we've had the fact that you're standing in here the fact that we're about ready to open our mouths and confess christ as lord is a reality that his deeds to us the faith community bible church have been and are and will continue to be good and that's worthy of our worship and our praise amen he is holy he is merciful he is glorious he is our god he is our king so let's worship him together [Music] let's sing this [Music] [Music] our shall rise [Music] a message [Music] holy holy holy the darkness [Applause] [Music] see [Music] [Applause] there is [Music] oh [Music] let's sing this third verse [Music] [Applause] all thy words [Applause] oh the is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] let's see this first verse [Music] lord god almighty our song shall rise [Music] [Music] [Music] well good morning church [Music] good morning church all right uh before we hop into this next song i wanted to share some stuff with you guys um as a worship community ryan's been leading us through some beautiful conversations about what songs we sing and why we sing these songs and the heart behind the songs and and just wanting to be honest as we sing and this morning we're going to do a song that's real familiar it's so come to the altar but the point is like in luke when jesus takes the scroll and he opens up isaiah and he reads it's very familiar to all of us he says the spirit of the lord is upon me because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor he has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind to sit at liberty those who are oppressed and to proclaim the year of the lord's favor so this morning while we're singing this song if you are able to echoes these words saying i'm hurting i'm broken within i'm overwhelmed by the weight of my sin no in this moment you can come to the altar right now in your seats because this is the work that christ came to do so if that's you this morning know that you can boldly enter into his throne room to receive the grace that you so desperately need let's not just sing words that are familiar but let's cry out with our hearts no god we are desperate for you we desperately need you and it's you that sets us free we thank you we love you lord [Music] so why are you hurting and broken within overwhelmed by the weight of your sin jesus is calling [Music] and have you come to the end of yourself and do your thirst for a train from the well jesus is calling [Music] the father's arms was born with the precious blood of jesus christ come to me there's no reason to wait jesus is the precious blood of jesus christ jesus christ [Music] [Music] [Music] what a singer [Applause] [Music] hallelujah christ is [Applause] [Applause] lord [Applause] [Music] christ is [Music] is [Applause] for [Applause] hallelujah [Music] [Music] the precious blood of jesus christ the was [Music] as you wait for the crown and tell the world of the treasure you found lord it is so good for us to come together and to remember what what we just proclaimed from your word oh what a savior isn't he wonderful seeing hallelujah christ has risen but that's why we've come we've come to give you praise and glory and honor and pray that you would continue to be glorified in our worship service we love you and we thank you for your love towards us let me pray this in the name of jesus amen guys can you see all right good morning church family my name is uh trent i am the youth and family pastor here at faith community bible church and just want to warmly welcome you with with the love of christ and just say that we are at the welcome desk in the back or in the foyer we'd love to just greet you and get to know you if you're visiting with us this morning we hope you feel warmly uh welcome this morning i was reading psalms 62 68 that says he only is my rock and my salvation my fortress i shall not be shaken on god rest my salvation in my glory my mighty rock my refuge is god trust in him at all times o people o church pour out your heart before him god is a refuge for us and we we hope that you feel welcome to pour out your heart before the lord knowing that he alone can save we can't save ourselves our spouses can't save us our kids can't save us our futures our careers can't save us only god can save us amen so a couple of announcements for us this morning uh this next week on saturday may 15th 9 a.m we'll be cleaning up our local church there's a bunch of things you might not notice this but the longer you live here and especially around spring clean up day you start to notice like there are weeds and cracks and paint and cobwebs and things around do you notice that ever as you come to this local church well hey if you do notice come help us on saturday morning at 9 a.m until about lunch time we would love for you to to come and serve together it's a great way to get to know people at this local church to see what their skills are we would love for you to rsvp for this event we're not going to punish you if you don't rsvp but please do so we can know what skills you're bringing to the table and how many people we have to to feed at the table um on saturday may 15 at 9 00 a.m so be here the other announcement is uh one that kind of calls for a lament so just a change in mood here a little bit um so we're thinking about uh india this morning so you might be aware that our that our church has a a missions team and that uh we give 11 of our budget to missions both globally and then and then locally and we have a emergency kind of response fund that we respond out of at some point so james 2 14 to 17 says what good is it my brothers if someone says he has faith and doesn't have works can that faith save him if a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food and one of you says to them go in peace be warmed and filled without giving them the things needed for the body what good is that so also faith by itself if it does not have works is dead and so this past week uh india has been in the news and recognizing that the poorest of the poor are most affected both by the relief efforts or the the measures that are taken to prevent kovid and covet itself and so we're going to pray for uh 7 500 dollars that we sent to our missions partners in india this morning and pray that the lord brings about a great work out of that we recognize it in the grand scheme of things this doesn't seem like a lot of money to give and it can only accomplish this much but god can do all things with the things that we give to him so let's pray along those lines and i'm going to pray for our kids as we dismiss him as well let's pray father we come before you again recognizing that you are the god of all comfort that without you the minor comforts of finances of of worldly comforts wouldn't provide anything for us ultimately and so god we come before you on behalf of our indian brothers and sisters who in all likelihood suffer great loss who are facing afflictions that we can only know in part god we ask that you would do a great work as this money goes forward of bringing about salvation for many that you would encourage and build up our brothers and sisters in india lord that you would do a great work of supplying the the real needs that people have lord thank you for the ability to partner with local churches i pray you glorify yourself through this god and as our kids go to their classes as they come face to face with the living god in his word we pray that they would see jesus and his gospel declaration that it is finished and that our kids would lay down their fights against us as parents or that they would surrender their hearts to you jesus and give themselves to you out of a heart of receptivity to your spirit and what you are doing in the world or you know how to speak to kids you know how to speak to our hearts and so we pray that you would do these things for your glory in jesus name we pray amen so if you sat with us please greet with one another with the love of christ and if you have kids to dismiss go ahead and dismiss them to their classes that's mice yeah you know what [Music] all right we're going to continue with our time of singing so encourage you to find your seat let's stand together [Music] as we continue through the book of john we are in john chapter 7 this morning and so there's a song um will be probably a newer song for us called living waters that really kind of um sums up that idea that christ is our living water that he is the source of our strength he is our rock he is our refuge we drink of him and we are satisfied that's where we're going this morning in the text and so we're going to sing about that to prepare our hearts for it [Music] you thirsty come and drink [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Applause] rise up in these living waters and there's a river there's a river that flows [Applause] is children love bringing joy to the city of our god where our hope [Music] a load is living water on the last day of the feast the great day jesus stood up and cried out if anyone thirsts let him come to me and drink are you thirsty [Music] [Music] there's [Music] bringing joy to the city of our god there's a river that flows with mercy and love bringing joy to the city of the heart of god where our hope is secure to do not fear anymore praise [Music] is amen good morning our scripture reading for today is john 7 36-52 what does he mean by saying you will seek me and you will not find me and where i am you cannot come on the last day of the feast the great day jesus stood up and cried out if anyone thirsts let him come to me and drink whoever believes in me as the scripture is said out of his heart will flow rivers of living water now this he said about the spirit whom those who believed in him were to receive for as yet the spirit had not been given because jesus was not yet glorified when they heard these words some of the people said this really is the prophet others said this is the christ but some said is the christ to come from galilee has not the scripture said that christ comes from the offspring of david and comes from bethlehem the village where david was so there was a division among the people over him some of them wanted to arrest him but no one laid hands on him the officers then came to the chief priests and pharisees who said to them why did you not bring him the officers answered no one ever spoke like this man the pharisees answered them have you also been deceived have any of the authorities or the pharisees believed in him but this crowd that does not know the law is accursed nicodemus who had gone to him before and who was one of them said to them does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does they replied are you from galilee also search and see no prophet arises from galilee [Music] well good morning if you have been with us so far in our study of the book of john you will know that chapters one through six jesus has been ministering uh in and around and throughout galilee and judea for the better part of two years he's been healing he's been preaching he's been casting out demons doing miracles and all this activity has kind of thrust jesus into the public eye his ministry is well known his controversial claims are kind of percolating and simmering and circulating in the minds of the masses in john chapter 7 kind of paints this swirling portrait of all this confusion about who jesus is we get snapshots of of suspicion jealousy adoration and even indifference and today in the text jesus adds fuel to that controversial fire by making this kind of wild suggestive dramatic even breathtaking claim now we just read the text and perhaps you're thinking that's kind of an overstatement i didn't i wasn't my breath wasn't taken away um let me let me add to begin a little bit of historical context here to help us understand just how radical jesus's words would have been and how they would have felt uh we mentioned several times now that there were three uh pilgrimage feasts there was a passover there was a feast of weeks and the feast of tabernacles or a feast of booze so the idea was if you could you should travel to jerusalem to celebrate these feasts but but why why was that necessary i mean this is especially confusing to us as 21st century uh christians living in america we think well why do you need to go anywhere i mean you know you can just pray to god anywhere anywhere you need to why why is church any different than a temple kind of a thing but that's not how the old testament saint thought and to be clear this was not an error in their thinking god himself told david to build a house in which he could dwell in their thinking god had a place on earth where his physical presence was manifest i mean there's a kind of glory you could see it at times worship was connected with a geographical location the temple in jerusalem now i don't know if everyone gets this uh this um the same screenshots that i do on my windows 10 thing that randomly pops up but this week this one came up uh this is the city of delphi uh according to the greeks this was the center of the world you this was where the world started this was the very beginning of the world in fact there was a special stone that fell here according to greek mythology uh what you're looking at here is the navel of the earth okay so um the jewish people of course rejected this idea this is not the center of the world do you want to know where the center of the world is it's the temple mount and you know and the and the stone on which the altar sits is the center of the world that's where that's where it's all about that's what it's all about so why do you travel to jerusalem answer because that's where the presence of god is right god's blessing flows from a particular place a geographical location and this place has obvious old testament significance this is in the old testament mount moriah what happened on mount moriah this is the place where abraham was told to go sacrifice his son isaac and the ram caught the thicket sacrifice in this place a thousand years later king david built an altar here uh to check a plague that had started this dramatic scene with an angel and a sword drawn and fire coming down from heaven to to approve the offering and all this kind of stuff um david solomon david's son solomon built the temple here it was destroyed rebuilt again by herod so by the time you get to jesus you have this incredible structure built upon mount moriah upon this rock i mean this was the place this was the geographical location of god and it's not just the place where blessing happened historically it's not even the place where blessing just happens presently it's the place where blessing is going to come from in the future i mean one of the most thoroughly messianic psalm passages in the bible is zechariah 14 you have this uh this passage that says this on that day speaking of this future day of restoration living waters shall flow out of dr out from jerusalem half them to the eastern sea half to the west it shall continue in summer as in winter and the lord will be king over all the earth okay so there's this so the minds of the jews blessing flows from jerusalem from the temple okay so three times a year this was reinforced in the minds of jews living throughout the roman empire so as was mentioned john 7 opens up by telling us it's the feast of booths just so just to be clear uh it has lots of other names a feast of tabernacles sukkot uh so but i want to paint a picture of what it would have been like whatever what it would have been a like to attend this feast hey first of all it was a long feast it was seven days long and i had kind of a bonus eighth day at the end and all those days were filled with activity that helped to remind people of what it was like when god provided for the nation of israel while they were wandering around in the wilderness right so they had all these things that you did filled with these days filled with activity to help you remember what it was like when god provided so for example the reason it's called feast of booths is because you were commanded to go out and dwell in these little tents and these tabernacles and these booze outside of your home so you put together this little twit this little twig hut or something like this and you go outside and you live in it for seven days and it reminded the people of what it was like to to live under the pure provision of god when you didn't have a house right you were out in the middle of the wilderness and this is commanded in leviticus chapter 23. giving the regulations for this feast you shall dwell in booths for seven days all native is right shall dwell in booze that your generation may know that i made the people of israel dwell in booze when i brought them out of the land of egypt i the lord i am the lord your god. and so even to this day when you go to jerusalem or israel or even new york for that matter um you can find jewish communities living in booze outside of their house um so maybe this year uh this fall you guys can try this out you know go in the backyard set up a tent live out there for seven days right what would that be like you'd learn some things right you're like your kids are trying to put your kids to bed they're bouncing all over the place or did i steal my covers you know and all this kind of stuff and uh and then dad i gotta go to the bathroom and then dad i'm thirsty but what if you didn't have water like what if your kids were actually thirsting to death and you're listening to all these moaning children around you and complaining i mean that would that would say something right it reminds you all of a sudden things start snapping into focus the grumbling in the wilderness seems a little bit more understandable god really did have to be their provision for their every single need no question now i'm painting a little bit of a negative picture here but the mood was totally pleasant this is a feast it's a festival it happened in the fall after the harvest and so it was it was a lot like our thanksgiving so there was this booth ritual but there's another ritual that features centrally in our text today um one of the on the part of the seven day ritual uh the priests would fill up this golden pitcher with water uh from the pool of siloam and it was carried in uh in procession led by the high priest back to the temple so try to uh envision this this right here on the in the slide this is the this is the pool of salome right here and um and this is if you've been to israel's where hezekiah's tunnel exits and so they fill up this golden pitcher and they approach the temple and they're supposed to be the the trumpet was sounded the shofar now this is a total side note here but it's kind of interesting i want you to focus on this little corner right here and particularly up on top right here if you i'll zoom in here when the temple was destroyed in 70 a.d this entire area was was pushed over and this is several hundred feet tall so this is a giant structure and the blocks are kind of pushed over the edge and if you go there today you can they've left some of these stones right there so you can envision it you know like these giant stones being pushed off the top um when you clear it away you can see the pavement below just crushed by these giant boulders falling down and one of the stones they found was this one and you know what it says it's a description it says to the place of the trumpeting and so this was actually part of the railing on the very top of that ledge up there and you can see a little cutout right there what's that cut out for well that cutout is for the trumpeter so he stands up there with his shofar and he blows and uh and trumpets and celebrate so yes whatever they do either blue horn i don't know um so we're just trying to envision the scene right we're envisioning the scene there the the priests are grabbing the the picture of water and uh and they're walking up to the temple ascending the staircase the shofar is being sounded you know it the pilgrims are coming from all over the roman empire all from galilee from the decapolis they're they're coming to jerusalem and another thing that's happening is that the temple choir is singing the hallel songs the psalms 1 113 to 118 halal means praise it means it's where we get our word hallelujah and so these psalms are sung as a unit they're sung during all three pilgrimage feasts and then they get to psalm 114 which says this tremble o earth at the presence of the lord at the presence of the god of jacob who turns the rock into a pool of water the flint into a spring of water so they're at the feast of booze they're remembering god's provision they're remembering water from the rock another thing they do here when they get to psalm 118. the tradition was you you took this special branch called the lulav um and it's kind of an application of this passage here where you're supposed to remember the fruits of the land right take a citrus fruit in this hand and some willow and in this hand you shake it together okay and so they're saying praise the lord give thanks to the lord they're doing these rituals to remind god or to remind themselves of all god's blessing so the priests continue with the path they ascend the grand staircase they enter into the temple and they they put at the time of the morning offering the wine and the water into two silver bowls and they pour it out okay now at some point in the feast and maybe even at that exact moment jesus interrupts and i think we can say that he interrupts based on the language used it was the last you know he stands up and it says he he stands up and he cries out it's definitely the language of something dramatic he stands up and he cries out and he says in verse 38 or sorry verse 37 if anyone thirsts let him come to me and drink whoever believes in me as the scriptures has said out of his heart will flow rivers of living water now that adds some context doesn't it you got all these vectors of meaning coming together and converging in a moment you have the first of all the vector of geography you know here here they're coming to this special place of jerusalem to the temple mount to mount moriah the very rock where abraham was to sacrifice his only son they came here three times a year they've been doing it for hundreds of years you've got the vector of need they came to the temple because they needed god you have the vector of redemptive history they're remembering back to moses all these elaborate rituals and traditions extend clear back to leviticus 23. they're remembering the manna from heaven there they just finished singing psalm 114 they're remembering the rock that moses struck and then water came out from the side they're envisioning god's provision and then not only that you have the vector of prophetic hope they aren't just looking backward they're looking forward and every is a super super common theme that in the old testament when you're looking forward to this future day of restoration it's envisioned as water poured out or water used to cleanse the land and interestingly it's almost always connected with the spirit look at isaiah 44 verse 3 for i will pour out sorry for i will pour water on the thirsty land and streams on the dry ground and i will pour my spirit upon your offspring and my blessing on your descendants ezekiel 36 25 i will sprinkle clean water on you and you shall be clean from all your uncleanliness and from all your idols i will cleanse you and i will give you a new heart and a new spirit i will put within you and i will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh and i will put my spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey all my rules and also joel 2 28 it shall come to pass after that i will pour out my spirit on all the flesh and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy your old men shall dream dreams and your young men shall see visions so do you see the connection between water poured out and the spirit of god and so they're looking forward to this day when is this day going to come when the spirit of god is going to be poured out like water so you have the vector of geography the vector of need the vector of redemptive history the vector of prophecy and it's all converging in this moment and jesus is watching this read depiction of water from the rock he's watching people looking forward to this redemptive day of history as they're under you know the yoke of rome and he stands up and he and it's like this fire that's burning within him and he's like ah i gotta say it you guys don't you see i am the rock i am the one the foundation stone beneath the altar that you think is like the center of the world like i'm that stone the water in the golden pitcher represents water from the rock right you you know who the rock in the wilderness was that rock was me destroy this temple in three days i will rebuild it i am the temple i am the chief cornerstone that is shattered and out of my side flows rivers of living water see this isn't a random statement jesus isn't walking around going you don't have water i'm a good analogy i'll use that i mean this is like the point of the bible and jesus stands up and says i am it now we get an editorial statement here offered by john and i want to focus on that for just just a moment it says this he said about the spirit whom those who believed in him were to receive for as yet the spirit had not yet been given because jesus was not yet glorified it was interesting you know come to jesus come to me and i'll give you the spirit and that moment had not yet come okay so now do you remember how last week ended i think this is really interesting the pharisees wanted to arrest jesus but somehow they were thwarted in that and then jesus said to them this he says listen i'll be with you a little longer and then i'm going to him who sent me you will seek me and you will not find me where i am you cannot come okay where i am you cannot come the jews said to one another where where does this man intend to go that we will not find him does he intend to go to the dispersion among the greeks and teach the greeks what does he mean by saying you will seek me and you will not find me where i am you cannot come so let me ask you this specifically where is the place that you cannot come and you might think to yourself like i did like oh but he's probably talking about heaven you can't he's gonna die he's gonna be resurrected to the father and then they can't get him there and of course that's true but i don't think that's what the context is teaching because the very next verse is this come to me and out of you will flow rivers of living water so the place where they cannot go is where it's inside the believer right it's inside of us because there's this realm this sphere of reality inside of us it's a location that a spear can't reach and get into it can't kill that it's inside of us it's like saying you know don't don't think something i'm gonna i'm gonna get that thought out of you with a spear like you can't you can't reach that realm i want to spend a minute on this because while it was not true for jesus's disciples and followers and listeners it is true for us right the spirit is in us as if you are a believer of jesus christ the spirit is in you so i want to spend just a few minutes on this point here maybe seven minutes try to apply this what is the thirst he says if anyone thirsts come to me what is the thirst how do i drink and what's the result okay so here's the first point what is the thirst now i don't i don't know a lot of you in this room very well but i don't have to know you to know that there is some area of your life that is like extremely broken i mean there is some deep hurt in your life somewhere you've been wounded by somebody you've been abused you've been you've been highly disappointed let down by someone and you might not be able to point to scars on your back or bruises on your arm but there are scars and bruises in your heart your life just honestly isn't turning out the way you hoped you would never in a million years i've ever said this is how i want my life to be so yeah you can pull it together you can make it to church you know you can put a happy face on and somehow put yourself together enough to get out and do your job at work but it's like there's a blinking light on your dash in your car and you hear this noise that's like really deep into the engine and you're like oh man that is not good like something is happening down there and if i don't fix that really soon this whole thing's going to blow up that's how it feels right there's a heaviness that surrounds you and it's almost like you're swimming with a 10 pound weight and you're like i can do this for a few minutes but it's not going to happen much longer i'm going to drown it's the feeling of getting let down by life that's the feeling i'm talking about it starts in your teens your teens this feeling happens when you get dumped by the girl or when you bomb a test or when your parents are highly disappointed in you for some reason when you're in your 20s you experience this let down when your sports career comes to an end you know when all of a sudden you finish college now you start to have to grind out the the real working world life and you're like man i don't get summer vacation anymore you know when you're in 30s the letdown happens when you realize how hard it is to parent kids and just how uncooperative they are and how little control you have over their development and the marriage gets harder and the pressures get added the financial stresses are applied and the patterns of arguing seem to become irreversible in your 40s you experience that when the number of broken relationships multiply and there's also these estranged people in your life and your friends are getting divorced maybe you get divorced maybe you your kids begin to resent you and the perfect marriage seems like kind of like a joke and the career definitely won't make you happy and then in your 50s you experience a letdown when your parents die and your your grown kids begin to make choices that you would never ever approve of and maybe even walk away from the faith and then in your 60s you experienced the let down when you retire and everything you've been working for so you can have time and money doesn't even remotely satisfy like you thought it would and then in your 70s you experience the letdown when your body begins to fail you and your friends begin to die and the you become increasingly invisible in a society that is racing ahead of you at a rate you can hardly comprehend and it feels like the only thing left for me is you know you feel like there's vultures hovering around you waiting for you to die so they can swoop down and pick up all your money right it's not supposed to be that funny all right i mean that's the letdown right it's the life does not satisfy and jesus says if anyone thirsts that's what thirst is thirst is the acknowledgement and the realization and the experience that this world does not satisfy and jesus if anyone thirsts all of us let us come to me and drink and i will give you the spirit of god well how do you drink then what is the process of drinking and it's so simple it's right in the text and you might miss it a thousand times if you just read too quickly all it is whoever believes whoever believes in me as the scripture has said out of his heart will flow rivers of living water that's how you drink you drink by believing everything jesus claimed about himself and all the promises that he made that's simply it you drink by believing the claims and the promises of jesus so let's walk this out maybe you are a college age and you are like the only one on campus who is maintaining your sexual purity you're like i i am like working so hard to honor the lord and i feel like i'm just missing out on everything like what in the world is going on here lord what is the answer well believe what jesus tells you there's a promise as you can apply to that moment like matthew 5 8 blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see god your reward for obedience for believing the promises of jesus is god himself you will experience god in a way no one else will because you prize him and in his commands or maybe you're you're feeling um like just the sense of there's an injustice in the world there's an injustice in my life maybe you see no hope in your life you've been so broken by the things that are that have surrounded you there's so there's so much injustice in your experience and you have come to grips with the fact that this will never be rectified there is no actual solution to this problem in this life what do i do then we'll believe what jesus tells you revelation 22 12 here's an example you could you could apply this first behold i am coming soon what is he coming to do to make all things right behold i am coming soon bringing my recompense with me to repay everyone for what he has done i am the alpha mega the first and last the beginning in the end the living water is the spirit of god who will take the truth the promises of his word and apply it beautifully in your heart so that all of a sudden you are satisfied you are satisfied now one uh thing really important thing here to note we keep talking about drinking it's the metaphor that's being used but obviously jesus isn't an actual drink right you don't you don't you know get more gallons of him to help you out in your life it's a mistake to think i think a lot of us do this we think that the spirit is some kind of magic like it's a force out there that will help me in my life somehow it's a it's a spirit it's a force right but the spirit is a person right the holy spirit is a person and being filled with the spirit allowing the spirit to work truth into your heart is fundamentally working on a relationship with a person i remember when i first saw my wife i thought to myself well i would really want that girl to want to marry me but she doesn't even know me yet so what do i do about that right well i started to spend time with her right that's the first thing i just started spending time with her i found out what she liked and then i tried to please her i started opening myself up and sharing pieces about myself that i wouldn't share with a normal person i made commitments to her i studied her i wrote notes to her and that's how i got close to my wife and it worked right so to be filled with the spirit is simply to develop a relationship with god you develop a relationship with god with the spirit of god in you and what's the result of this what happens when the spirit becomes part of your life and fills you um a person who has the spirit of god becomes then a a rock themselves out of which flows living water so that people around you now are blessed by the water that comes out of you you've been filled so much so that it's overflowing out of you and you're no longer a drain to people like you are a source of life to people people love being around you because they're just drinking drinking drinking from from the spirit of god whose fruits are coming out if the spirit of god is working in your life this will be the result you will be a fountain to them one of my favorite verses to share with people in suffering in second corinthians chapter one it just says this blessed be the god and father of our lord jesus christ the father of mercies and god of all comfort who comforts us in our affliction why so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by god this is not a magic charm you develop a relationship with god and when you have a relationship with someone you trust you believe what they say and that brings comfort to your own life that's that's the very simple way in which this works there's no magic charm jesus says come come to me and do personal dealings with me get to know me and believe what i tell you is true and that will become for you a source of living waters okay now there's lots of ways we can apply this today is mother's day happy mother's day okay i want to apply this straight to mom's this morning mother's day is a day to appreciate mothers it's a day where um where we kind of reverse the cultural idea that mothering is an obstacle to achieving your full potential right um we want to reverse that we want to we want to say hey what is god's view what is god's like pinnacle for for you as a woman you know god says hey apple ceo of apple forget that like mothering right that's what it's all about mothering now we know for some of you this is a difficult day right you may have recently lost your mother or maybe you're estranged from your mother or maybe you want to be a mother and you cannot and we just want to acknowledge hey the god of all comfort will comfort you in that right but that doesn't negate or just detract from the beauty of god's design from others so let me just explain to you the beauty of how god has designed things some things in this world can scale very easily for example i'm here preaching i can preach to 20 200 2 000. it makes very little difference right it scales very quickly and easily but other things don't scale at all for example diapers like one that one mom for one diaper like you can't scale that any further than that i mean just it just is that um you can't scale childbirth labor right just one at a time like very slowly and painfully you can't correct and discipline behavior quickly right this this process is labor-intensive customized to the individual you can't give hugs and kisses and tuck little kids into bed at scale right god has designed this to be a process that is one on one a beautiful one-on-one relationship this is the work that has to be done so i want to pray for you mother so if you're a mom in the room would you stand uh we want to we want to honor you and just um and just yeah go ahead let's honor the mothers and let's uh let's pray for you moms father in heaven we do just thank you for the moms in the room um lord we thank you for this this uh this job that is impossible in so many ways it is it asks everything and gets so little respect in our culture today lord but i want to just remind every mom here right now that they are loved that all their labor is seen by you and that it is eternal in its reward father i thank you for these moms and their flexibility they're willing to adapt to give up so many things in their life for you and for their children i thank you for their their their tirelessness their perseverance their devotion and just the selflessness of the late nights and rocking the infants and nursing and the just the the long days of washing and wiping and cleaning and all those tasks around the house i just pray that you would help her to see that there is eternal significance in the mundane or seemingly mundane that lord help them to to understand this the radical way in which being faithful to you in this way will change the world and lord i just pray that you would bless them lord give them encouragement help them to believe your promises in your name we pray amen let's stand together all of us sorry [Music] join our moms we are so thankful for you i'm so thankful for christ to work in us as a church and just again as we are looking back over what jason just preached on in john 7 knowing that christ is our source of hope our strength our rock our firm foundation he is our fountain he was our fountain he will be our fountain that we drink from forever we're gonna respond with this song [Music] there's a fountain [Music] [Music] lose [Music] their guilt is [Music] [Music] sit here dying shall never lose [Music] [Music] peace [Applause] [Music] the church of god [Music] [Music] do [Music] [Music] [Music] your songs [Applause] [Music] like juice [Music] i [Music] to save [Music] i can't think of a sweeter thing lord to end on than that hope and we trust that hope lord because we know that you will see it through god that you are you are working in us you're you're changing us you're making us like yourself lord and you're bringing us home so we'll have you for eternity worshiping you we're loving you living in relationship with you as you've created us to do so god forgive us for so many times that we find ourselves distracted [Music] forgetting just how much you satisfy would help us to fight the idols in our hearts may we get rid of those as we look you square in your face lord as we look towards heaven and say you're enough because of what you're doing in our hearts so lord we love you we thank you we give you the glory and the honor and the praise in its new name we pray amen amen if you have prayer needs um we will have a prayer team that will be up here to my left your right that would love to pray with you again would just commend that to you it doesn't even have to be a need if you just want to come and talk with them about the gospel rejoice in the work of christ in your own heart and your family's heart and what god is doing in your life we'd love to hear about that as well we just invite you encourage you to come the rest of you guys treat your moms really well today lavish them in love they deserve it we love you guys go in the grace of christ you were dismissed [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] an orphan forever you
